Or buy a house? Join us in the P.A.L.M. home project. CDBIA has stepped forward in a big way to help with training of the future of the construction industry in Charlotte County in a cooperative effort supported by Director Barney Duffy of the Charlotte Technical Center (CTC). We are facing a huge labor shortage in the construction industry. We need to start working now to help offset that issue. The CDBIA is currently involved with the CTC construction and drafting students through the Future Builders of America program created by the Florida Home Builders Association. The program provides students with funding for field trips, speakers, leadership camp scholarships, and cash scholarships for continuing education as well as tools and equipment for their trades. P.A.L.M is an acronym that stands for Professionals Actively Leading and Mentoring. Construction industry owners, professionals, associates and affiliate members as well as other private business owners and county government are all involved with this project. The creator of this project is Beth Cantin, CDBIA President, and co-owner of Cantin Homes. The contractor of record is Don Cantin, President of Cantin Homes, and Beth’s father. Credit really goes to the past leadership of the Charlotte-DeSoto Building Industry Association. Beth and Don combined the ideas from past CDBIA home projects and their own ideas to assist in answering the current issues of the labor shortage in our industry. Director Barney Duffy, who has been with the CTC for just over a year and newly hired Assistant Director DeeLynn Bennett met with CDBIA leaders to discuss the P.A.L.M. Home project and gave full support for the industry involvement. Duffy said “This is music to my ears.” Our goal is to train students by building a home from the ground up. We are looking to increase enrollment in the tech center with this project by expanding the current classes offered to possibly include the major trades; Air Conditioning, Electrical and Plumbing. By offering these courses it will give students the opportunity to network with professionals and assist them in developing relationships that will result in business owners hiring them upon graduating from these programs. CODE ENFORCEMENT UPDATE This past June in celebration of Homeownership Month, NAHB launched a new consumer imprint, MyHome Press. Products with the MyHome Press imprint are designed to help current and future home owners make sound decisions when building, buying, maintaining, and remodeling their homes. BuilderBooks wants to showcase the homes you build and remodel by pinning them on the MyHome Press Pinterest boards. Your customers are already on Pinterest so you should be there too. If NAHB posts your project, they will include your company name and a link to your website. Pinterest users will be able to repin their photos for others to see giving them even more visibility—hence creating free advertising. Plus, for each photo you provide you will receive 1 entry into the drawing to win a $350 Home Depot gift card. The winner will be drawn on August 30, 2013. We also had Licensing Investigator Aaron Schulze do a public outreach at the local Lowes Home Improvement store that went over very well. She is going to put our handouts regarding unlicensed contractors and what to look out for at the millwork desk and also at the Pro Services and Install desks. Lowes has also invited him back to do another outreach in the future. We want to welcome our newest Investigator, Terri Barnett, who comes to us via the Code Compliance Department. Terri is Certified in Levels, 1, 2 and 3 through the Florida Association of Code Enforcement Officials and is a Certified Code Enforcement Professional who has approximately 28 years in Code Enforcement working in various disciples including but not limited to Illegal Dumping, Code Enforcement and now Licensing.
