Bach, Piazzolla, and more by organist Hector Olivera at Segerstrom
The spectacular William J. Gillespie
Concert Organ meets its match with this
year’s soloist, Hector Olivera, who returns for
his second recital with Pacific Symphony’s
Pedals and Pipes series.
Known for his passionate musicianship
and interpretations of both classical and
popular music, Olivera opens the program
with his own arrangements of Bach’s vigorous
Sinfonia from Cantata No. 29, and Piazzolla’s
somber Oblivion. Guilmant’s Sonata No. 8
shows the vast range of the organ and
Mozart’s Fantasia in F Minor reveals the
organ’s terrifying power and sublime beauty.
In addition, Lefébure-Wély’s March in C Major
is spirited in French style, and as a finale,
Olivera brings his virtuosic improvisation skills
to the stage, creating a new piece based on
themes suggested by the audience.
This organ recital takes place on Sunday,
March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Segerstrom Concert
Hall. For more information or to purchase
tickets call 714-755-5799 or visit
www.PacificSymphony.org.

Woman’s Club of Cypress
Spring Victorian Tea
The Woman’s Club of Cypress (WCC) will
hold their popular annual Spring Victorian
Fundraising Tea on Saturday, March 28. 2015
beginning at noon at the Cypress
Community Center (5700 Orange Ave.
between Walker and Valley View).
The Rose Garden Tea is the main source
of income to fund many of the Club’s
philanthropic projects. Some of the
beneficiaries include:
• American Cancer Society
• American Heart Association
• Acacia Adult Day Care Services
• Cypress College Foundation
• HOPE (Helping Other People Everyday)
• Seal Beach Animal Shelter
It’s a scrumptious affair with traditional
English brewed teas, delicious baked scones
served with jam and clotted cream, and
finger sandwiches. The festive day will also
feature entertainment.
Each table has its own hostess who
adorns the setting with her family tea set.
One of the event highlights is touring the
majesty of 20+ tables, each one regally set
with unique decorative dishes.
With imagination, members and guests,
many wearing hats and gloves for the royal
occasion, can envision themselves enjoying
high tea at Buckingham Palace.
Along with opportunity baskets (provided
by members), door prizes (collected by
members) and an opportunity drawing, local
vendors will offer a wide selection of jewelry,
clothes and other gift items that would make
any woman feel like a queen.
Tickets are $30 per person and go fast for
one of the Club’s most popular events. For
more information or to order tickets, call:

Grammy-winner Ramsey Lewis and
acclaimed guitarist John Pizzarelli team up to
honor Jazz titan Nat King Cole in an evening
filled with the legend’s timeless songs at the
Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts (CCPA)
on Friday, March 20, 8 p.m. Tickets are
available at the CCPA Ticket Office, by
calling 562-467-8818 or at cerritoscenter.com.
The late Jazz-Swing singer and musician
extraordinaire Cole remains Unforgettable to
fans worldwide. The Grammy winner and
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee made
television history in 1956 when he became
the first African American to host a variety
television series.
In Straighten up & Fly Right, music icons
Lewis and Pizzarelli present the late legend’s
ageless hits, which include Straighten Up and
Fly Right, Route 66, I Love You for Sentimental
Reasons, and It’s Only a Paper Moon.
With three Grammys and more than
eighty albums throughout his career, Lewis is
known for infusing Gospel and Classical
sounds into his Jazz-Blues-R&B repertoire.
The Chicago Tribune called him “electric,”
saying he “clearly is capable of writing fresh,
aria-like melodies steeped in blue.”
Pizzarelli has cultivated an award-winning
international career as a contemporary
interpreter of classic American standards and
ballads. Called “madly creative” by the Los
Angeles Times, the host of nationallysyndicated Radio Deluxe With John Pizzarelli
has won the 2007 Nightlife Award, which
honors the best in New York cabaret, comedy,
and Jazz.

From the late 50s until the mid 60s, The
Rat Pack was “showbiz’s unrivaled kings of
swing, quick-with-a-quip cats who could
swagger into any joint…and make it the
most,” hailed Life magazine. Wherever the
group’s members performed, sellout crowds
followed. Revisit that golden era of Las Vegas
with impeccable impressionists of Frank
Sinatra, Joey Bishop, Dean Martin, and
Sammy Davis, Jr.
