Our boys in blue - the very heart of the
Dubai College Community
All of us within the College
community are no doubt aware
of a group of men, dressed
in blue, who seem to appear
whenever there is a need.
What may not be so apparent
is that each of them often goes
beyond the call of duty in his
commitment to the life of the
College. The spring term is
notoriously busy and every
member of the ancillary staff
has made a major contribution
ensuring that everything on the
ever growing list of activities
and events is a success. We
are a much richer community
as a result. For this we extend
a sincere thank you to ‘our
boys in blue’ who are indeed
at the very heart of the College
community!
Medical Alert!
In order to maintain up to date
health profiles for all students
could parents please respond to
the following requests:
1.
Please update the School
Nurse on all new medical
conditions eg. asthma, allergies
etc. This should include
information about any medical
procedure or operation your
child has undergone since
joining the school.
2.
Please provide all
information regarding any
vaccinations that your child has
received during the year.
In addition the ‘flat ballet,
pump style shoes’ (a popular
choice for many girls) are
becoming a cause of concern
both medically and in the way
they are being worn. May we
remind students and parents
that such shoes together with
sandals are not acceptable as
school uniform.
Reminder to
parents
May we respectfully remind
parents that it remains a
requirement to give a term’s
notice regarding your son/
daughter’s withdrawal from
school.
Communication Notices
Please remember to add Dubai
College to your acceptable email
recipients list as we have had
quite a few reports that parents
are finding our letters/notices
in their junk folder quite by
accident. Even if you have done
it before, it would be better if
you could regularly check your
junk folders for any notices from
the College and add our name
please on your list of acceptable
senders.

Music, Charity, Love – an evening to
remember
The Music, Charity, Love
concert organized by the
Charities’ committee was
certainly an evening to
remember. The concert, part
of the ongoing fundraising for
the Haiti appeal was set in the
gardens adjacent to the Sixth
Form centre. Singers and
musicians from Year 9 through
to Year 13, put together a
wonderful programme of songs,
providing superb entertainment
to an enthusiastic audience
of around two hundred. In
addition to raising a splendid
sum of over 8,000 dirhams
the evening proved to be
a most enjoyable occasion
where once again DC students
demonstrated just how talented
they are. Hopefully the concert
will become a permanent fixture
of the DC calendar.
Dubai Literature Festival
Haiti Appeal
tops the fifty
thousand
mark!
Isobel Fonseca visits the
College
Mr. Marc Sauvagnac Executive
Director of MSF visited the
College recently to meet the
Headmaster and members
of the Charities’ Committee.
During the meeting Mr.
Sauvagnac thanked the Dubai
College community for their
wonderful support of the
Haiti Appeal. Mr Sauvagnac
was presented with a cheque
for AED 7,312, bringing the
total donated by the College
community to AED 51,517.
A group of Dubai College students did more than just pay a visit to
this year’s Dubai Literature Festival; under the guidance of Miss
Carberry some of our Year 7 students took part in the opening
parade, whilst members of Year 11 impressed at the fringe festival
with their inspired dramatizations of poems from the GCSE
Anthology.
During the recent Dubai Literature Festival the College was delighted to host the distinguished author and journalist Isobel Fonseca.
Ms Fonseca entertained an audience of English students with tales
from her past, from her experiences living with the Roma gypsies of
Eastern Europe through to her personal tastes in literature. After a
revealing question and answer session Ms. Fonseca signed copies of
her novel ‘Bury me Standing’.
Pictured with Mr. Sauvagnac is

the Committee.
FDC Table Top Sale
Last weekend’s FDC Table Top Sale attracted a host of visitors. With tombola, bouncy castles and over
a hundred tables offering a wide array of items for purchase the school was a hive of activity. The initial
estimate of funds raised is in the region of 12, 000 dirhams.
Congratulations go to the FDC committee and in particular to Mrs. Mona Irfan for her energy and
commitment. Much of the student participation was the result of Mr. Bernaz’s drive and enthusiasm.
Mr. Bernaz and his team worked very hard to raise funds for the Santa Clara Community Centre in
Mauritius.
Former student offers summer internship
Former student Sami Khalaf ,
known for his enjoyment of the
outdoor life, is doing what for
many of us remains but a dream
– he is hoping to make his living
from what he loves most. Sami,
together with two friends, has set
up Star Surf Camps. The camps
are situated in France and on
the beautiful Indonesian island
of Bali. Sami visited College this
week looking to find potential
camp assistants for this summer.
He gave a detailed presentation
to a group of sixth form students
before joining some of his
‘old’ teachers for lunch in the
staffroom.
Anyone interested in finding out
more should access
www.starsurfcamps.com
Sami is pictured with some

presentation.

Netball
victories!
Earlier this year former student
Tom Jones received rave reviews
for his performance in J.B.
Priestley’s comedy ‘The Good
Companions’ at the Bristol Old
Vic Theatre. Tom has recently
followed up on his success
with an equally impressive
performance in William
Wycherley’s bawdy Restoration
comedy The Country Wife.
Following last month’s Year
7 netball triumph the girls of
the Year 8 netball squad were
not to be outdone. Playing in
the Dubai Schools’ tournament
organized at JESS Ranches
the team battled through to
the final where they met a
very determined and skilful
Wellington International team.
However some great play from
everyone led to DC snatching
victory in a nail biting climax by
a score of 5-4.
Recently Jumeirah College
held a Dubai Schools’ Under 15
netball tournament. Player of
the tournament, Anna Louise
Williams was in sparkling form
leading the DC ‘A’ team to
victory in the final. The DC ‘B’
team finished ninth.
Pictured with the team is coach, Mrs. Fran Cameron. Also pictured is Lidia Replinska receiving the
trophy from one of the tournament organizers Mrs. Sudderby.
DC Hong Kong Rugby and Netball Tour
sponsored by HSBC
Both the girls netball and boys
rugby teams excelled in their recent Hong Kong tour sponsored
by HSBC.
Resplendent in their tour kit
generously sponsored by HSBC,
both squads enjoyed great success in the sporting arena. The
girls played matches against
South Island School and went
unbeaten throughout the week.
With past DC teams reaching five finals out of seven in
the pre-sevens international
schools’ tournament the boys
had a reputation to maintain.
However, they did not let anyone
down going unbeaten in their
Memorial cricket match
A large crowd of parents,
students and friends turned out
to support last month’s twenty
over cricket match in memory
of Jumeirah College student,
Mohammed Kassim.
In
addition to raising money for
charity everyone was treated
to some swashbuckling batting
from both sides. Having been
set a mammoth target of 182 by
JC the DC boys made a valiant
effort but fell short by twenty
runs. After the game a trophy
was presented to the JC team
in memory of Mohammed and
it was decided that the match
would become an annual
fundraising event in memory of
Mohammed
group games and semi final they
went through to meet the reigning champions from the Hong
Kong club. A slow start saw the
DC lads go behind by two tries
early on and despite a wonderful
effort to get back into the match
they had to settle for the runners
up position.
JPS
victorious
Dubai College once again
played host to the annual
Primary Schools’ Athletics
Championships with several
hundred children and adults
enjoying a glorious afternoon of
track and field events. As usual
the JESS Jumeirah team was
prominent at all levels. However,
throughout the afternoon
the boys and girls from JPS
proved to be a match for their
‘Jumeirah rivals’. With the relays
races counting double points
everything pointed towards
a really close finish. Despite
some hotly contested races
the team from JPS came home
victorious to win their first ever
championship.
World Maths Day Challenge
Between the 2nd and 4th of March Dubai College pupils took part in
the World Maths Day Challenge which involved answering mental
arithmetic problems in a game situation against pupils from all over
the globe. Over the 48 hour period our pupils answered a total of
124, 834 questions correctly. Special mention goes to the following
students who were the highest scorers in their respective year
groups:
Y7 Oliver Fleming 2627
Y8 Bianca Perreira 1667
Y9 Ziyan Kassam 12195
Y10 Leeona Pour Mirza 1244
Congratulations to Ziyan for being the school’s highest points scorer.
At the begininng of May there will be another challenge which
focuses on schools in the Middle East. Pupils will receive login
information from their Maths teachers during the month of April.

Evita
Outstanding! Terrific! Engaging! Five Stars!
This was the verdict of local
media personality John Deykin
following the second night
performance of the College’s
production of the musical
Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber
and Tim Rice. Mr. Deykin’s
comments undoubtedly echo
the feelings of the majority of
those who packed the auditorium
during the three night run.
The auditorium was the perfect
venue with Nick Jones’ exciting
set and lighting designs providing
the perfect visual backdrop to
enable the story of Eva Peron to
unfold.
At the very heart of the show’s
success was a wonderful
ensemble cast. Clearly evident
was Mrs. Jones’ choreography,
bringing energy and vibrancy
to the story of the iconic Eva
Peron. Astonishing performances
from Erik Brinkhorst (Che
Guevarra) and Lucie Turner
(Eva Peron) were wonderfully
supported by stage debutantes
Kyal Mapara (Peron) and Karim
Amr (Magaldi), whilst Sophie
McAdam Clark’s (Peron’s
mistress), startlingly intuitive
interpretation of Another
Suitcase in Another Hall was
greeted with rapturous applause
every evening.
The band under the creative
musical direction of Mr.
Zambonini, worked tirelessly to
ensure the very demanding score
was both technically accurate and
supportive of those on stage.
The production, the first of its
kind in the College auditorium,
showcased the venue wonderfully
well.
The backstage crew led by Stage
Manager Harry Midwood,
enabled each performance to
move effortlessly from scene to
scene. In addition the make-up
team under the guidance of Mrs.
Bailey and Mrs. McClaren added
yet another touch to a production
that can rightfully claim to be
professional in every way.
The contributions made both
on and off stage combined to
make a truly sparkling theatrical
experience. No contribution was
more important than that given
by Emirates Precast who erected
the set. Their ongoing support of
DC productions is invaluable. In
addition the generous support
offered by Marina Exotic Homes
and The Friends of Dubai College
is very much appreciated.

Space Camp Turkey 2010
Thirty five Year Eight students traveled to Izmir , Turkey for a space
camp experience not to forget. At space camp they tried out the
simulators used to train astronauts, learned about living in space,
had hands on experience in robotics, built and tested rockets and
performed missions bringing the full size space shuttle back to
Earth.
After a full three days of enjoying science in action they had a ‘bit of
culture’ by visiting the ancient ruins of Ephesus – a truly amazing
experience, followed by a sightseeing and shopping tour of Izmir.
World Challenge
On the 1st July this year, 15
students and 2 teachers will be
flying to Malaysia for a 16 day
World Challenge expedition.
World Challenge provides young
people with the opportunity to
plan and organize their own
travels in a foreign country while
all the time being in the very safe
hands of an experienced and
well qualified World Challenge
Leader.
While in Malaysia, the team will
complete a short acclimatisation
trek followed by a project phase
in the area of Tasik Chini. The
project will be based in a rural
village where the challengers will
help with building boardwalks
and have the chance to teach
some of the local children.
After the project, the team
will set off on a 5 day trek in
the Kenong Rimba National
Park, one of the planet’s oldest,
undisturbed and biologically
diverse tropical rainforest
systems.
The last few days will be spent
enjoying some well earned R&R
time, most probably on one of
the Perhentian Islands.
On the weekend of 25th27th March, the challengers
successfully completed their
training expedition and are
now very excited about the real
expedition in July. The cost
of the expedition includes a
donation to the charities with
which the challengers will be
working. The challengers are
currently involved in raising
funds through bake sales
and other events and greatly
appreciate any support and
donations that they receive.
Thank you!
Help for the Santa Clara Community
Centre continues
For over a decade Dubai College
students have been visiting
Mauritius annually, as part of
their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Expedition.
Although the main purpose
of their trip is to undertake
a tough three day expedition
through challenging terrain.
In addition the students spend
time on a charity project and
this has become an integral part
of the expedition often leading
to students returning to Dubai
with fond memories of how they
made a real difference in helping
others less fortunate than
themselves.
Over the years, DC students have
helped to decorate and renovate
schools in Mauritius and have
donated much-needed money to
help the schools keep operating.
Most recently, over fifty DC
students visited the Santa Clara
Community Centre and designed
games and activities to help
develop the confidence and
social skills of children from an
orphanage near to Grand Baie.
Unsurprisingly, these students
are keen to continue to support
the schools that they visited in
Mauritius, and this year some
have, with the help of others
throughout the school, decided
to take part in the FDC Fun
Day to raise more desperatelyneeded money to help pay for
Santa Clara Community Centre
improvements. They have raised
around AED 4000 as well as
collecting a number of soft toys,
educational games and books
that year 10 students will take
with them on their next visit.
Sixth Form hear from former Head Girl
Former Head Girl Amal Akbar
gave the sixth form something
to ponder on when she spoke
of her ‘journey’ since leaving
Dubai College thirteen years
ago. In a thought provoking and
entertaining address during
a sixth form assembly, Amal
described some of the moments
and people she has encountered
in her life thus far.
Amal has just set up her own
PR company in Dubai having
worked with Emirates Airlines
management team for the last
two years.
Dubai Football Sevens
Dubai College was undoubtedly
the leading school in the inaugural
Dubai International Football
7s, held recently at the Emirates
Sevens Stadium. The tournament
had a mix of school, club and
academy teams battling it out in
different age groups and DC sides
often found themselves up against
teams drawn from a number of
schools and clubs. Attracting
international stars from around
the world the two day tournament
saw the three College sides that
were entered make the final in
their respective age group.
The under 13 boys’ team went
straight from their semi final
where they defeated Repton
2-0 to meet a Jebel Ali Football
Academy team in the final. A
score line of 0-0 led to penalties

Trophy tournament the DC/JC
cricket team took a notable scalp

and once again the DC ‘curse’
meant the team ended as runners
up. The Under 13 boys’ team will
participate in the inaugural VW
Junior Master’s Tournament on
April 3rd at Jebel Ali Centre of
Excellence.
The senior girls’ team played some
excellent football throughout and
deservedly went through to the
final where they met a side made
up of some of the best players
from the Dubai Ladies’ League.
Unperturbed they set about their
task with great determination,
creating a couple of very good
chances to score. The difference
in the teams however proved to
be the outstanding individual
performance from a young lady
who recently been offered a
football scholarship in the US. The
DC girls finished as runners up.
Despite the earlier
disappointments of the day the
senior boys’ team once again
demonstrated why they have
been the dominant team in the
region this year. Playing against
some very good overseas and
local teams the boys swept all
opposition aside to go through
to the final where they beat ‘Abu
Dhabi Kickers’, a very strong
Nigerian side, 1-0. The senior
team has had an outstanding
season completing the Dubai
Schools’ league and cup double
and winning both the Onion Bag
and Gulf Unity Trophies.
Congratulations to all the team
members and the coaches for such
a successful weekend.
The Crowne Plaza Dubai College Rugby 10s
This year’s Dubai College rugby
10s sponsored by Crowne Plaza,
will be remembered for some
excellent support from the
AGRFU referees and a group
of boys from Zimbabwe. The
success of the second day of the
tournament was, in no small
way, due to the efforts of the
volunteer referees who worked
throughout the day to ensure
the games were played in the
right way. The international
flavour of the competition was
enhanced by the presence of the
Heritage School from Zimbabwe
who impressed everyone with
their pre-match ‘haka’ and the
manner in which they conducted
themselves throughout.
Day one was an action packed
non-stop rugby feast with games
going on in the Under 11, 12,
and 13 age groups. Competition
was fierce and some surprises
were sprung. At primary level
the traditionally strong JESS
Jumeirah side was once again in
the mix reaching the final where
they triumphed over DESS.
In the Under 12 age group an
under strength Dubai College
squad went out in the semi final
stages to the eventual winners
Jumeirah College who beat
Wellington 15-5 in the final.
At Under 13 the DC team (who
have gone unbeaten this year)
and was without several first
choice players, still made it
through to the final where they
lost to Repton.
The Under 14 team, having
convincingly won through to the
semi finals met a strong English
College team who scored two
tries in quick succession. Despite
a spirited performance in the
second half their opponents
deservedly won to go through to
the final where they lost to JESS
Ranches.
The Under 15 competition
produced some outstanding
matches with good performances
from several sides. Despite a
few hiccups in the early stages
the DC team battled their way
through to the final where they
met the ‘old enemy’, the English
College. Some superb rugby
from the DC boys saw them
dominate early on and despite
a spirited display from the
opposition DC won in style.
At Under 16 the wonderful skills
of Repton’s ‘islanders’ attracted
a great deal of attention as they
demonstrated strength and flair
is an unbeatable combination.
Repton comfortably made
their way through the group
and semi-final stages where
they met DC. Despite a really
spirited performance from the
hosts some wonderful running
from the Repton backs led to a
comfortable victory.
In the Under 18 final the DC
team who had played superb
rugby throughout the group
games made slightly heavy
weather of their win over
a ‘never say die’ EC team.
However, some equally resolute
play by the DC boys meant they
retained their title for another
year.
The success of the weekend was
again the result of a mammoth
effort from staff and students at
DC, in particular Mr. Jones, Mr
Sell and Mr Woolley. Thanks go
to the AGRFU referees for their
sterling work on the Saturday.
Our gratitude also goes to
Crowne Plaza, Abu Dhabi and
Crowne Plaza, Dubai for their
continued support of the event.
House Update
Sports Day
Expertly organised by Mr A.
Jones and his splendid PE team
resulted, for the first time in
living memory with a tie between
Barbarossa and Cousteau (293
points each) followed closely by
Chichester (290) and Heyerdahl
(273). When the scores were
broken down to the six sections
(Junior, Intermediate and Senior
Girls and Boys) and the Houses
allocated points according to
positions within these sections
the results were as follows:
Cousteau 17 points
Chichester 15½

it was not ‘unlucky 13’ when some fine field event performances led
to a convincing victory with WIS second and JESS Ranches third.
A week later the boys traveled to Rashid School for Boys hoping for
a return to winning ways. Having won the title for the first ten years
of competition the boys team have for the last two years, had to
settle for second place. Rayhaan Lone’s inspiring form, plus a great
team effort saw the boys reclaim the trophy beating EIS Jumeirah
into second place followed by JESS Ranches in third.
Well done to all the athletes and to the PE department for their
expert coaching.

DC/JC defend ARCH Trophy
During the first week of the holiday a combined DC/JC team will
be defending their crown when they participate in this year’s ARCH
Trophy. The boys will face some stiff opposition from UK schools
Abingdon, Winchester College, Uppingham and St. Georges and
Saint Kentigern College from New Zealand. Anyone interested in
the games should go to www.archtrophy.com for further details.
There will also be a practice game against Saint Kenigern on
Saturday 3rd April – 10.00am start.
Water Polo
Following on from their
successes earlier in the
season the Senior Boys’
Water Polo team recently
played a tournament at Kings’
School, organised by Dubai
Camels’ Water Polo Club. The
College played three games
of two quarters lasting seven
minutes. In the first game DC
resoundingly beat JC 6-1 with
Frank Ryan in inspired form,
scoring four. The second game
against a strong Camels ‘A’ side
was a much tougher test with
DC losing 5-1 to their more
experienced opponents. The
score line might have been even
wider had it not been for the
outstanding performance of
Phelim Dunleavy.
In the final game Mr Case used
his bench to blood new talent.
Not to be outdone our less
experienced players performed
really well against JC to win
comfortably by a margin of
4-0. A prominent feature of the
morning was Sam Adamson’s
captaincy.
Mr. Case would like to thank the
Camels’ club for their wonderful
hospitality.
The club meets on Monday
evenings from 8.00 till 9.30pm
and they would welcome
any keen water polo players
regardless of ability.
BSME Games success
The Under 15 girls’ netball and football squads
recently represented the College at the BSME Games
in Bahrain. In the netball competition the ‘A’ team
played 10 games, winning them all to reach the final
where they defeated St. Christophers’ School 9-6 in
the final. An equally impressive performance from
the ‘B’ team saw them finish third overall.
In the football competition the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams
finished fifth and sixth respectively.
Congratulations go to all the girls involved and
to Mrs. Adamson for her support and coaching
expertise.
Music Concert
An appreciative audience of
parents and friends of the
College were given a musical
treat this week as over two
hundred musicians and singers
performed in the Spring Concert.
A varied and entertaining
programme of orchestral, choral
and ensemble pieces provided
something for everyone.
Delightfully compered by Year
12 student Lily Schuck, the
evening began with two pieces
from the Beginner Band. The
first half included performances
from the guitar group and flute
choir with vocal contributions
from Young Musician of the Gulf
Y12 Fieldwork
in Cyprus
Forty-three Year 12 Geography
and Biology students took part
in a four day fieldwork trip
to Cyprus from the 7th to the
12th March 2010. Based at the
Environmental Studies Centre
at Kritou Terra, the students
engaged in a wide range of outof-the-classroom activities and in
the process learned much about
the subjects they are studying.
The weather varied from really
quite chilly to very pleasantly
warm. The geography students
studied coastal erosion and
coastal management together
with inequalities in Paphos and
in the surrounding villages.
The biologists conducted fresh
water ecology research, studied
the local flora and fauna and
put together some interesting
presentations based on a gorge
walk they completed on the last
day.
winner Emily Collinson and the
Junior Choir. The Intermediate
Band received a warm response
with their rousing interpretation
of the Batman Theme and
Eye of the Tiger. Following
refreshments the second half
began with the Senior Orchestra,
playing selections from
Superman Returns, followed
by a wonderfully eclectic mix
from flute, saxophone and
clarinet ensembles. The senior
choir, swelled by the cast
members of Evita, performed
a medley of songs from the
musical Jekyll and Hyde.
Dr Ferrario made a short
speech in which he thanked
all involved in producing such
a wonderful evening of music
and entertainment. The Jazz
Band, under the direction of
Mr Zambonini, they gave us
all a perfect end to the concert
with superb renditions of Duke
Ellington’s Caravan, followed by
a version of the Michael Jackson
classic, Thriller.
Congratulations go to everyone
involved including Mr. Nick
Jones for the lighting.
Particular thanks go to Mr.
Zambonini and the staff of the
music department.
Model UN
Wonderful reviews for Mrs
trip a success Bailey’ first exhibition
After weeks of research and
preparation, 14 students from
Dubai College’s sixth form
travelled to take part in the
largest model UN conference
held in Turkey. Stepping into
the shoes of Ambassadors from
the UN states, the students
debated issues ranging from
establishing nuclear free zones,
protection of religious rights
to the political situation in
Cyprus. For five days, over 600
hundred students from Colleges
and universities gave speeches,
prepared draft resolutions,
negotiated with allies and
adversaries to resolve conflicts,
all whilst navigating the rules
of procedure, to resolve the
problems that affect countries
all over the world. Dubai College
delegates represented South
Korea, Lebanon and Italy.
Earlier this month our Head of Art, Mrs. Jane Bailey was invited to
participate in the prestigious Al Bastakiya Art Fair. Exhibiting her
work ‘white scapes’, under her maiden name of Jane Beveridge, she
enjoyed some wonderful reviews. Having worked on the exhibits
for the last six years, Mrs. Bailey thoroughly enjoyed the experience
of being one of the selected individual participants in the week long
exhibition.
We are all very proud of her!
Year 7 castles
exhibition
As part of their history studies
Year 7 students have been busy
producing their own versions of
a medieval castle. A wide range
of designs from motte and bailey through to concentric models were on show at the rear of
‘A’Block and in the foyer of the
auditorium.

Expedition to Nepal
On 1st July, 15 students from the
senior school will be departing
on an Expedition to Nepal where
they will trek to remote Nepalese
villages in the foothills (2,500
metres high) of the Himalayas.
After a 3 day journey through
rainforests and steep mountain
slopes, following the same trail
that Hillary and Tensing took
on their way to Mount Everest,
back in 1953, the school party
will arrive at the Villages of
Bupsa and Bumburi. There
they will take part in restoring
and rebuilding a local school
and monastery, and will donate
school books and pens as well
take part in some English to the
Nepalese children.
To prepare for this trip, they
have each been set a challenge
to raise One Thousand Dirhams,
which will then be donated to
the school in Nepal and will be
used to pay for the materials
that are necessary to make it
habitable. So far the students
have thought up some novel
ideas of fund-raising, including
sponsored walks, sponsored
silence, and pizza parties. If you
wish to find out more about the
charity that they are supporting,
or would like to get involved
with the fund raising, then more
information can be found at:
