Teen Bible Quizzing
2013-2014
Challenge Accepted? What does that mean?
Hey you awesome person you ! Holding this book signifies that in some capacity, you are
participating in Teen Bible Quizzing this year! (Yay!) We can't wait to see what God is going to
do in our lives this year.
Now, before you start getting overwhelmed, we are going to go through this together! We are
team. You, your fellow quiz teammates, you coach(es), and most of all Godl
a
It's going to be some hard work: learning how to quiz, how to study, how to jump, how to do
everything for quizzing. Even for our returning quizzers (and coaches) it's going to take a little
bit of time to get back into the swing of things! Everyone has to get ready for this whole
experience.
When a tough task comes in front of our way, we have the choice between one of two options:
we could either say "This is too hard! Nope, l'll go and run away now!" or we can rise to the
occasion, take the task head on and do our very best that God can do for us. We are definitely
tempted to do the first one.
ln James L, James (the writer of James) is addressing the twelve tribes around the nations. He
says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trails of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." (James t:2-3)
Wait a minute, Jimmy. You say consider it purelby when l'm faced with many trials? The only
thing that we are thinking of when we are tempted is the amount of work, effort, time, energy
that we might have to put through to make something work! Why should we consider it pure
jov?
He continues in verse 4, that we let perseverance finish its work so that we may be mature and
complete not lacking anything. I don't know about you, but I don't want to lack anything in my
life. We have to press on. lf every time that we are faced with a difficult task that we hide under
the covers and don't do what is asked of us, would we ever grow up?
This makes me think of diamonds. Diamonds are really pretty and beautiful, but they didn't
start off as diamonds allthe time! For a diamond to become a diamond, it's got to be pressed
down, burned, shaped, carved and a bunch of other hard things.
stuff on your plate. Maybe you're worried about stuff. Maybe
you're worried that God might have left you. (L't off, He hasn't!) lt's time that you (and me)
stepped up to the plate and not give in to temptation.
So maybe you've got a lot of
I
wonder how that will look during the quizzing season...
What Are We Studving Anvwav?
This year, we are studying two books, Romans and James. Both are letters to churches.
The book of Romans was written to the church in Rome in about 56 or 57 A.D. The theme of the letter is
righteousness. He says that no human being is righteous, that Jesus alone is righteous, that we are freed
from the power of sin if we have faith in Jesus and we should live lives that are holy and pleasing to God,
Our second book this year is James. The book of James could be the earliest of the New Testament
letters which was written about 48 A.D. This letter was written by a brother of Jesus and addressed to a
bunch Christians everywhere. He wrote in order to teach Christians how to live a practical Christian life.
Here We Go!
Here's your handbook to the super, crazy, fun time world of Teen Bible Quizzing! ln this magical
handbook of awesome are some of the rules, tips, fficks and some encouraging words for Bible Quizzing.
This is your "Guide to Teen Bible Quizzing for Extra Super Awesome Fun People and Such".
What ln the World is this'Teen Bible Quizzine" Anvway?
Bible quizzing ministry is a unique and exciting ministry for youth that combines Bible study, mentoring,
competition, fellowship, discipleship, and mission. The ability to take each of these elements and mold
them into a program attractive to teenagers is what makes quizzing such a successful, worthwhile, and
worldwide ministry. (Taken from youthquiz.nazarene.org)
ln other words, Teen Bible Quizzing is a great way to do three things: Be challenged by the Word of God
through study, quiz practices and quiz meets, meet new teens who are passionate about God (and start
lasting relationships with them), and HAVE FUN learning the Word!
What Do We Do During the Season?
Every month, we as a church will travel and quiz on a portion of the books of Romans and James. We'll
go through about 5 or so rounds, depending on how many people are at a specific quiz. ln between each
meet, we as a church will have about 3 practices, once a week on Monday evenings. lt's going to be a
fun, thought provoking, spiritualjourney through the books of Romans and James!
ls There a Post-Season or Somethins?
Yupl lf some of our quizzers do really well on the district level, we can qualify for a church or All-Star
Team at Regionals, a quizzing bash in April/May where we take on quiz teams from across the Eastern
Region! After that, if we are reolly, really good, we could go to Nationals at General Assembly in
lndianapolis in July!
the Rules?
Ok, so there are a lot of rules in Bible quizzing, so many that
So What Are
it has its own rule book. lf you wanna see

them all, check out
Generally, there are two teams of about 4 or 5 quizzers. For our example, let's say there are 5 on each.
Each quizzer has a jump seat (so cooll), it's a buzzer for your tush! There's a quizmaster (QM) and
scorekeeper, those are the judges. QM's ask the questions. There are 20 questions for every round. On a
toss-up , the QM asks a question and the first to jump of the buzzer, gets 30 seconds to answer the
question. lf the quizzer is right, he/she gets 20 for the team ! lf one quizzer gets 4 questions right at any
point in the quiz, they "quiz out" which means they are now out of the quiz. lf a quizzer gets a question
wrong, they get an error and on member from the other team get a chance for a L0 point bonus. lf the
person on seat 3 got it wrong, then person 3 on the other team will have a chance for bonus. Three
wrong for any one quizzer and just like in baseball, they're out, lt's called an error out. Starting with the
L6th question of a quiz, it's the error zone (dun-dun-dun). Ever wrong answer is -10 from the team score.
The team with the most points at the end of 20 questions win that quiz. lf there is a tie after 20, then a
make or break tie breaker question will be asked. First to jump gets to answer. Correct is a win and
incorrect is a loss. Those are the rules in a nutshelll (Again, there are more rules and specialstuff that
happens, but we'll go over all of that in practice step by step!)
What kind of Questions Will Be Asked?
There are 7 kinds of questions that will be asked in a quiz round. The QM (quizmaster) will announce
what kind of question before asking it.
General Questions
There are eleven of these per quiz round. A general question is a question about a passage in
the Scripture,
Ex: Question #1- is a general question. Question #1...question (this is how QM's talk!):

o

i;$;*T[.iT::::::H #]1?1,,
Accordins to Questions
r
There are 4 of these per round. An according to is kind of like a general question, but it's
pertaining to a specific part of a verse. Sometimes key words might appear in more than one
verse or chapter, so an according to question narrows it down to a specific passage. You need to
be a little more specific for an according to, than a general question. Here are two examples
from last season (20121:
o o"".'.o' y#::ff::
x ;",

o o*".'o'
y":l?,ri?Lli
i-r,.::,Y,.l'ffi

different passages. Sometimes these could be tricky.
Context Questions (Pastor Matt's Favorite!)
There's only one context question in every quiz round, but they're fun! A context question could
be about anything in the Scripturel lt could reference a specific word only mentioned once, a
special footnote on the bottom of the page in the Scripture portion, it could be a two part, three
part answer (in some books, a 9 part answer!)
Context question: 7. Complete in essence (meaning close enough) the following verse:
"All who sin
::ilt"ti:J-iil arso perish apart from the raw, and au who sin under the raw
will be judged by the law." (Romans 2:12)
c o n t ext qu;;:

ll,"#":'il 1,,
They're fun because you really get to dive into the Word to understand what the writer says!
ln What Book and Chapter
o
There is only one ln What Book and Chapter in every quiz. The QM will read a passage of
Scripture and will ask for the book and chapter. At the beginning of the quiz year, it will be
easy. (There's only one book for about 4 monthsl) The More chapters we learn, the more
choices you'll have to pick from. Note; Quizzers from lost year will recognize thot the Situation
Questions are gone. Before you jump for joy, understond this, ln Whot Book and Chapter
questions oppear in quiz seosons where more thon one book is quizzed on. lt'll be bock next yeor
when we quiz on Acts (Actually, we might hove both Situation AND IWB's)
ln What Book and Chapter is the following: What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if
ro*."oni...|:n:t;*ffifaith but has no deeds? can such faith save them?
o
These questions sound hard to tackle, but
with practice, we'll get 'em !!
Memorv Verses
There are three different kinds of memory verses that are asked each quiz, each with a novelty trick to
'em: Verse, Reference and Quote. We'll use our team verse to let you know what we mean.
Verse
The QM will start you off with first 3-5 words of a memory verse and you have to finish it.
"Finish this verse: Consider it pure joy...
A: my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because you know
that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. (James 1:2-3)
Reference
The QM will start off with the first words again, but this time, you have to give the reference at the end.
"Finish this verse and give the reference: "Consider it pure joy...
my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trails of many kinds, because you know that
the testing of your faith produces perseverance." James 1:2-3
For these, if you give the right verse but wrong reference, your answer is wrong.
o
o
o
o
**Note: lf for the Verse Question, you give the reference (when it was not required) and is incorrect, but
you quoted the verse correctly, you are wrong for the entire question.**
Quote
Just like it sounds. The QM will say where the passage is from and you'll have to give the verse or verses
in its entirety.
"Quote James chapter 1 verses 2 and 3"
"Consider it pure joy brothers and sisters, whenever you face trails of many kinds,
because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." James 1:2-3
o
o
And for all memory verses, they've gotta be word for word. No close enough herel lt must be spot on.
