These decanters originated in the collection of the Honorable Hugh J. Grant
(1858-1910) and Julia Murphy Grant (d. 1944), later passed onto their son,
Hugh Grant and his wife, Lucie Mackey Grant. The Hon. Grant was the
Mayor of New York from 1889-1892, the youngest in the city’s history at age
31. He made several contributions to the city’s history, including the
appointment of the first rapid Transit commission to develop a subway
system. Grant became a successful real estate entrepreneur and married
Julia Murphy, daughter of U.S. Senator Edward Murphy, Jr. The couple’s son,
Hugh J. Grant (1904-1981) served in World War II and was an accompanied
attorney and philanthropist.

William Alton Jones (1891-1962) was a philanthropist, businessman, and
personal friend to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Jones was president of
Cities Service Company, now called CITGO, from 1940 to 1953. He was
influential during World War II, responsible for producing dynamite
production plants and aviation fuel refineries, among other fundamental
contributions. Jones was killed tragically in an airplane crash while on his
way to join President Eisenhower on a fishing trip in 1962. Following his
death, his family gave his private hunting and fishing retreat to the
University of Rhode Island, eventually forming the W. Alton Jones Campus.
Jones also started a charitable foundation, the W. Alton Jones Foundation,
which funded environmental causes and supported the arts until its
dissolution in 2001.

distinctly shaped the craft of
silversmithing in the United States,
as one of the most accomplished
and inventive designers of the
second half of the 20th century.
Christensen trained under the
reknowned Georg Jensen, and
became the lead silversmith and
head of the prototype department.
His career took off in 1952 when
Christensen was sent to New York
to represent the Georg Jensen firm
at the Museum of Modern Art.
Christensen’s designs made up the
majority of the show and thus he
was introduced to the American
Craft movement.

After moving to the United States in
1954, Hans Christensen began
teaching at the School for American
Craftsman at Rochester Institute of
Technology, where he taught two
generations of silversmiths. As a
craftsman, he emphasized the
importance of making objects for
people that specifically defined their
personality and individuality. His
pieces are held in collections all over
the world including numerous
churches, the Vatican and in the
collections of Royal families, past
United States Presidents and
Congressmen.
Hans Christensen held many
prestigious awards throughout his
career, including two medallions
from King Frederick of Denmark, the
Eisenhart Award for Outstanding
Teaching by RIT, and was named to
lifelong status as a Fellow of the
American Crafts Council in 1979.
Christensen was the only endowed
chair in the crafts for the Charlotte
F. Mowris Professorship in
Contemporary Crafts, as engraved
on the compote at hand.
