President`s Message - Minuteman Model A Ford Club
The Oil Leak
President’s
Message
Spring has
sprung - The tour season is in full swing. Aside from our touring, Martha
and I plan to have a nice garden his year. Last year was the first time we did not have
one for a very long time. The veggies and flowers and our tours make for a wonderful
spring season.
Our calendar is all marked out with the club tours. So many choices, we can't make
them all but we can try. So much ice cream and so little time.
Autos and spring go hand in and in my mind. It was in the spring of 1956 when my
father told me he found a nice car - a '53 Ford. It would be the perfect car for me. It
seemed like forever before I got my license and got my car on the road. Never did I
lose my love for the automobile. I did not do any hot rod or custom changes. Stock
right from the factory was my style. Hanging around repair shops as a teen, I learned
some repair and maintenance techniques. Various mechanics had different approaches to auto repair. Some practiced the diagnostic approach. Find the problem, what
caused it, make necessary repairs; while others practiced the basket of parts to repair.
Take the make and model of car to be repaired the parts depot store. Fill the basket
with parts, head back to the shop, and start plugging in parts until the car ran fine.
Both methods are a far cry from today's shops. Where the service tech plugs his computer into the automobile's computer. And after a chat between the two
computers, the tech gets a print out of all parts and work to be done.
The winter was so cold, that even the statues were frozen to the bone. I love the
spring, see you all out and about loving that fine weather.
John

The Program Chairperson provides an item of
interest, after most
monthly meeting. One
way this is accomplished
is to invite various services to come to our
meeting with the products and or services. The
presentations are often
followed up with a feature in this newsletter,
The Oil Leak.. Another
example, could be soliciting club members additional hobbies they enjoy and would like to share
with the club.

Please Support our
Boston Marathon
Minuteman Runner,
Thomas Zappala
I will proudly be wearing the colors of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge and raising money for basic innovative cancer
research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I am returning to
the starting line after a two-year "retirement" - once again in
memory of my mom and dad, both of who lost their lives to
cancer. I hope to be in great shape when April 21st rolls
around, and while long ago I stopped visualizing that I'd be
leading the pack down Boylston Street, I do hope to reach the
starting line in great shape and prepared to enjoy a great day in
the Boston community.
When I haven't been running Boston, I have been volunteering,
and last year was no different. I was in Hopkinton at daybreak, in Wellesley at noon, at 3:00 PM, I was running
with my friend Clare on Beacon Street, trying to make sense of what had happened in Copley Square. It still
doesn't make sense, but I will be joining thousands of others in remembering and the tragic events of that day when
Patriot's Day rolls around this April.
The truth is, I had decided to run Boston in 2014 the night before last year's marathon - after Delores Weaver,
founder of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge, asked me to consider running again for the 25th anniversary of
the DFMC. This has been a program that has been close to the hearts of my family and I, as has been supporting
research to find cures and treatments for cancer. I have lost too many loved ones to cancer, and seen the debilitating effect cancer has had on individuals and families.
I had a unique opportunity to personally see, and benefit from, new developments in cancer research while I was
being treated at Dana-Farber those many years ago. These developments, now considered standard protocols, included new drugs (including Zofran, which helps minimize nausea, thus making chemotherapy palatable, and
Neupogen or G-CSF, a white blood cell growth stimulant, which enables patients to sustain higher levels of chemotherapy and rebuild their immune system) and the autologous stem cell transplant (which also enables patients to
sustain higher, hopefully curative, levels of chemotherapy). These advances, in concert with the caring team at
Dana-Farber, enabled me to survive a cancer that had proved resilient to conventional therapies available at that
time. In other, simpler words, these innovations gave me the opportunity to watch my children grow up.
Unfortunately, there are miles to go in the search for cures and therapies for cancer, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help fund research to continue the search at Dana-Farber. I hope that you will consider joining me by
sponsoring me in the 2014 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge as we, you and I, help support Dana-Farber in the
search for a cure for cancer.
If you would like to support me in this effort, please go to http://www.runDFMC.org/2014/thomaszappala and
sponsor me - and then please come out and cheer for me on April 21st - letting me know where you'll be along the
course so I can look out for you and take strength from your presence.
Many thanks for all your support,
Tom

“You who!” be a
Question:
What is the OILLEAK mailing list?
Answer:
A mailing list is a collection of names and addresses used by an individual or an organization to send material to multiple recipients.
Question:
Why would I want to subscribe to such a list?
Answer:
Because the members of your Model A car club use the list to forward timely and interesting (we hope) information about meetings, tours, other members and other information about our Model A hobby.
Question:
Do I just receive emails from "the list" or what?
Answer:
No. You can also post messages to the list and your message will be sent to all of the subscribers.
Question:
How do I get on the list?
Answer:
The easiest way to get subscribed is to send me an email ( [email protected] ) and I will have
YahooGroups (the mailing list host) send you an "invite."
Question: What happens then?
Answer:
Then you will get an email (usually within an hour) from Yahoo inviting you to join the group. From there
you just push the "Join This Group" button and you're good to go.
Question:
Well I tried all of that but I never got the email from Yahoo..?
Answer:
Maybe the email is in your JUNK folder or Yahoo doesn't like your internet service provider.
Question:
Can I post off-topic stuff and all of those funning jokes my friends send to me?
Answer:
No.
