MONITORING SYSTEMS
A well-designed IPM program is dependent on an effective warning system. Trap
monitoring is an ideal method for detecting and even measuring the extent of an
infestation. Sticky traps are commonly used for detecting cockroaches, ants and
other crawling insects; light traps for flying insects; and pheromones for stored
product pests. Traps provide round-the-clock surveillance and help pinpoint
areas of infestation. Pest activity should be recorded on a floor plan or diagram.
An interpretation of these results will be helpful to the overall pest management
program and assist in solving persistent pest problems.
INSPECTIONS
Traps should be inspected at least once a week, more often if an infestation is
suspected. Pheromone traps and even sticky boards are excellent devices for
discovering even low levels of insect activity. One or several insects (i.e., Indian
meal moths, cigarette beetles, warehouse beetles) may indicate a relatively small
population; most likely the source of infestation will not be found. However, traps
with an increase of 5-10 cigarette beetles or IMM’s maybe a sign of a serious
problem and immediate action is needed. Use whatever resources are available
to find the infestation. This may include visual inspections, random sampling of
suspected materials or sifting through product spillage.
PHEROMONES
Pheromones are chemical scents that insects produce to communicate with each
other. Insect monitoring systems include sex attractants and aggregation
pheromones.
Sex pheromones are produced by adult females to attract male insects. Stored
product pests such as Indian meal moths, cigarette beetles and warehouse
beetles are attracted to this lure.
Aggregation pheromones are produced by adult insects to attract both males
and females. Examples include flour beetles, rice weevils and German
cockroaches.

Sawtoothed Grain Beetle (sticky traps - close proximity)
Psocids (sticky traps - close proximity)
5
SITE SELECTION
In heated buildings or in warm climates, a year-round monitoring program may
be needed for early detection of stored product insects.
It is important to take care in selecting sites for trap placement. In doing so,
consider insect feeding habits and place traps in areas of suspected sources of
contamination such as long-term storage, on top of floor seams, next to beams
and vertical supports and where dust and product residue may accumulate.
TRAPPING
A grid pattern at intervals of 50 to 60 feet is recommended for attracting Indian
meal moths, cigarette beetles and warehouse beetles. Tighten the grid as
needed in order to help pinpoint the source of activity.
When monitoring for stored product pests such as saw-toothed grain beetles or
flour beetles use floor-mounted traps or flat sticky boards. Food lures are often
used to provide greater attraction for both adults and larvae. X-Lure and Dome
floor traps may also be selected. Place traps within close range of suspected
infestation.
Do not place traps next to open windows and doors where pheromone lures may
attract insects such as warehouse beetles, cigarette beetles and Indian meal
moths from outdoor locations. In warmer climates, Indian meal moths and
cigarette beetles are sometimes found outside.. When monitoring exterior
locations, be sure to keep traps away from entrances to avoid drawing insects
into the building.
IDENTIFY THE PEST
“The use of pheromones and trapping procedures are not difficult. However, the
timing and placement of traps as well as interpretation of the results require a
good understanding of insect biology and behavior.”
Wendell Burkholder, 1984
6
Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella)
The IMM is one of the primary stored product pests found in North
America. They are found in food processing plants, storage facilities,
supermarkets, pet food stores and they are frequent visitors inside the
home. IMM’s feeds on a wide range of foods including cereals, nuts, dried
fruits, bird seed, and pet foods.
LIFE CYCLE: Under warmer conditions, the cycle is completed within 4-6
weeks; up to 12 weeks in cooler temperatures.
EGGS: Deposits 100-300 eggs on or near food supply.
LARVAE: Produce silken webbing as they feed and move about; leaves
food supply to pupate (i.e., cracks/crevices, pegboards, under racks,
behind shelving, etc.); larvae have the ability to penetrate packaging.
ADULTS: Non-feeding; short lived; most active during early evening hours;
can be found outside in warmer climates.
MONITORING: A sex pheromone covers a range of approximately 1,500
sq. ft. Add traps to help pinpoint source of activity.
CIGARETTE BEETLE (Lasioderma serricorne)
A member of the anobiid or wood boring family of insects - Cigarette beetles
are serious pests of tobacco and a frequent visitor to the food industry.
They attack a wide variety of foods including spices, grains, pet foods,
seeds, dried plants, etc.
LIFE CYCLE: The complete life cycle takes 21-26 days at 37 °C and 120
days at 20 ° “C They cannot tolerate the cold; adults die within 6 days at
4 °C, and eggs survive 5 days at 0–5 °C.
Cigarette Beetle
EGGS: from 50-100 per female.
LARVAE: 4-6 larval instars; developmental period is effected by food
source.
ADULTS: Non-feeding; life span about two to four weeks. Adults are
excellent fliers, attracted to light and can be active outdoors in warmer Drugstore Beetle
climates; will actively penetrate packaging materials. The drugstore or
biscuit beetle is similar in habits and appearance. Distinguishing
characteristics are clubbed antennae and striated markings on wing cover.
MONITORING: Sex pheromones are highly effective in a range of 10001500 sq. ft. Inspect areas where product spillage and food residues are
likely to collect such as long-term storage, drop ceilings and confined
spaces.
7
Sawtoothed Grain Beetle (STGB) (Oryzaephilus surinamensis)
One of the most common stored product insects in the United States. It
can be recognized by its projections on either side of its prothorax. It feeds
on a wide range of foods – especially cereal, dried fruit, candy bars, nuts,
pasta, cookies and many other products. The STGB can be found in
processing plants, food warehouses, and supermarkets.
LIFE CYCLE: 20-25 days under ideal conditions; average about 4 weeks;
as many as 6-7 generations per year.
EGGS: up to 300 eggs laid loosely in food spillage
LARVAE: Develops in and around food supply
ADULTS: Live from 6-10 months, up to three years; Its flat body permits
access into tiny cracks and defects in packaging. Adults migrate from food
supply and infest adjoining products. Cooler temperatures (below 68F) will
help suppress reproduction. A closely related insect is the merchant grain
beetle.
MONITORING: Sticky traps or Dome traps (with liquid food attractant)
should be placed in close proximity to suspected infestation.
Red & Confused Flour Beetle (CFB, RFB) (Tribolium
castaneum and T. confusum)
Both the red and confused flour beetle will attach a wide range of grain,
cereals, milk chocolate, dried fruits and other food products, but their
preference is to milled grain. They are commonly found in bakeries, grain
mills, pet foods, grocery warehouses, supermarkets and the home.
LIFE CYCLE: about 30 days under optimal conditions; in heated facilities
4-5 generations annually; can live up to 18 months
Red
EGGS: up to 450 eggs; female lays 2-3 eggs per day.
LARVAE: go through an average 7-8 instars prior to maturity.
ADULTS: Red flour beetles can fly, confused cannot; The antennae of the
CFB gradually expands, the RFB is elongated; generally stays near food
supply.
Confused
MONITORING: The aggregation lure will attract within a close range of 3
to 4 feet. Place traps in areas after cleaning to monitor the effectiveness of
a sanitation program.
8
Warehouse Beetle (Trogoderma variable)
No doubt this beetle gets it name because it is common to food
warehouses. It feeds on a variety of plant and animal products including
pet foods, egg noodles, oats, potato chipsE days
LARVAE: require about 4-5 weeks to develop; fully grown larvae may
enter diapause and remain so for 2 years; light and dark distinctive
segments; hairs of larvae when ingested can cause intestinal irritation.
Larvae prefer animal protein and can be found in secluded undisturbed
areas.
ADULTS: can live inside or outdoors; adults can fly; Trogoderma can be
found feeding in bird nests and wasps nests.
MONITORING: Be sure not to place pheromone traps near doorways or
open windows so as not to attract from outside. Inspect light traps, longterm product storage, drop ceilings and old equipment for signs of
activity.
Black Carpet Beetle (Attagenus megatoma)
One of the most destructive of the five important species of carpet
beetles in the United States. Adults are scavengers feeding on bird
droppings, cereals, grains, nuts; outdoors they will feed on pollen and
flower nectar. Dried insect specimens in museums are also a favorite of
this beetle.
MINIMAL LIFE CYLE: a wide variance from 60 days to 2 years,
depending on food and temperature.
EGGS: about 50 eggs deposited in cracks & crevices and around food
source.
LARVAE: damaging stage of insect; found in cracks where foodstuffs
accumulate; cigar-shaped larva with short hairs on a dark brown or
blackish body; larval stage may range from 3 months to 2 years; cast
skins may accumulate near food supply.
ADULTS: emerge in spring and early summer to lay eggs; can live from
9 months to 3 years depending on food and environmental factors.
MONITORING:
A sex pheromone is useful for early detection.
Successful control is dependent on locating the source of infestation.
Look for conditions that may contribute to pest activity.
9
PSOCIDS (Liposcelis spp.)
MINIMUM LIFE CYCLE - 21 days.
DISTRIBUTION - North America and Europe. Not
injurious to stored grain.
BIOLOGY - These small insects (about 1/25”) develop
from egg to adult in about 65 days. Reproduction
occurs throughout the year, the adults live about 3
months.
EGGS - Up to 100 eggs per female laid on various
commodities and bags.
LARVA - No larval stage; young resemble adults, but
smaller in size and paler in color.
ADULTS - Some species are winged and other
wingless. Psocids feed on microscopic fungi and mold
and a wide variety of organic matter, both of animal
and plant origin. They are often found in areas of damp
and stagnated conditions (e.g., pallets, packaging,
floor seams, silos, drains, floor/wall perimeters).
Careful inspections and good sanitation practices are
needed for effective control. Most psocids do not
survive when humidity falls below 50%.
Foreign Grain Beetle
MONITORING – Place sticky traps in close proximity
of suspect locations; adding a starchy material may
enhance attraction.
FUNGUS BEETLES is a general term covering
several different beetles associated with damp, humid
conditions where fungi, molds and mildew occur.
These small beetles can crawl or fly through open
doors or roof vents, and then wander aimlessly. They
are often attracted in collection trays of light traps.
Hairy Fungus Beetle
Many of these beetles are similar in appearance (even
to cigarette beetles and drugstore beetles). A good
hand lens or microscope is important for proper
identification.
10
FOREIGN GRAIN BEETLE (Ahasverus advena)
AVERAGE LIFE CYCLE – 215 TO 250 days.
DISTRIBUTION – The foreign grain beetle is distributed worldwide an is
know to infest grain and cereal products, cocoa, peanuts, dried fruit, herbs,
spices and roots.
BIOLOGY – The female lays eggs singly or in small clusters. The larvae
emerge in 4 to 5 days and complete their development through 4-5 larval
instars in about 15 days
ADULTS – are small, reddish-brown with characteristic projections at the
anterior corners of the prothorax. It is a strong flyer and is attracted to high
moisture and moldy food products.
Foreign grain beetles resemble the rusty grain beetle, the distinguishing
factor being the club-shaped antennae. Also, when placed in a glass jar,
foreign grain beetles will climb up the sides, while rusty grain beetles
cannot.
HAIRY FUNGUS BEETLE (Typhaea stercorea)
AVERAGE LIFE CYCLE – 215 TO 250 days.
DISTRIBUTION – The foreign grain beetle is distributed worldwide an is
known to infest grain and cereal products, cocoa, peanuts, dried fruit, herbs,
spices and roots.
11
RUSTY GRAIN BEETLE (Cryptolestes ferrugineus)
DISTRIBUTION – Six species of the genus Cryptolestes are known
to infest stored products. Of these the rusty grain beetle is one of two
species that is cosmopolitan. Mainly to all types of grain and grain
products, but also to rice, dried fruit, groundnut seeds, herbs and
oilseed cake, is found both as a secondary pest, i.e., together with
other grain pests, and as a primary pest in grain, as the larvae and
beetles damage the whole kernels. Rapid mass reproduction leads to
great heat generation in the grain. Severe damage can be done to
seeds and brewing barley, as this pest feeds also on the germs.
BIOLOGY - The female deposits some 100-400 eggs loosely in the
infested goods. The development period from egg to beetle is 5-12
weeks, depending on temperature.
Rusty Grain Beetle
ADULTS – The adults is reddish-brown and about 1/16” long, with the
antennae not more than 1/2’” the length of the body. The beetles
develop either inside or outside of grain kernels. They can withstand
relatively low and high temperatures.
FLAT GRAIN BEETLE (Cryptolestes pusillus)
MINIMUM LIFE CYCLE – egg to adult in about 5 weeks
DISTRIBUTION - The flat grain beetle is commonly found in stored
grain, often attacking grain and meal that is in poor condition.
BIOLOGY – This tiny insect is about 1/16 inch long. It has a greatly
flattened body with antennae about 2/3 as long as the body. Both
larvae and adults have chewing mouthparts. Fully grown larvae form
cocoons of a gelatinous substance to which food particles adhere. The
average development time in summer is about 9 weeks
ADULTS - Often a scavenger in moist, mold-damaged grain. Adults
can live for a year and fly readily to infest new food sources. Can be
found in flour silos. Careful inspection of sifter tailings is important to
determine presence of this beetle. Closely related in appearance, with
the antennae reaching about ½ its body, is the rusty grain beetle.
Flat Grain Beetle
12
GRAIN MITE, Cheese or Flour Mite (Acarus silo)
MINIMUM LIFE CYCLE - 17 days.
DISTRIBUTION - Worldwide; attacks many types
particularly if moisture is high or after fungal attack.
of produce
BIOLOGY - A female deposits about 20 eggs. The white, six-footed
larva is 0.15 mm long. Within a period of two weeks, it passes
through two eight-legged nymphal stages before becoming an
adult. Occasionally the mite passes through a long very resistant
stage of development between the two nymphal stages, the socalled hypopus stage.
EGGS - At least 100 per female; egg stage can tolerate several
months at temperatures of 0°C.
ADULTS - The body of the grain mite is a white oval with reddish
brown mouth parts and legs. Immature stages and adults - attack
cereal embryos, dormant stage resists starvation, desiccation, and
chemical treatments. It is widely distributed and endures low
temperatures. The grain mite will live in fields, and grain elevators, as
well as in grain, flour, or other food products that contain suitable
moisture. Prevention is the best strategy. Proper sanitation involves
the removal of old grain and food borne dust that settles in and
around grain bins, storage areas, overhead structures, perimeters,
floor seams and other potential harborage locations.
RICE WEEVIL (Sitophilus oryzae)
MINIMUM LIFE CYCLE – as short as 32 days in warmer climates.
DISTRIBUTION - The rice weevil is found all over the world,
especially in warm climates. In the U.S. it is found in fields and can be
found in storage of pasta products and other stored grain.
BIOLOGY - The female bores a hole in a kernel of grain, lays an egg,
then seals the hole with a gelatinous material. She lays 300-400 eggs
in a lifetime, but seldom in winter. The cooler the temperature, the
less egg-laying there is. Larvae go through 3-4 stages (instars) in
about 18 days, and pupate for about 6 days. The adult rice weevil
stays in the grain kernel for 3-4 days until it is hardened and mature.
Adults fly in warmer temperatures (85F).
MONITORING – An aggregation pheromone is available. Traps
should be placed in close proximity to suspect area.
13
FRUIT FLY (Drosophila) Vinegar Fly
•
Fruit flies can reproduce anywhere there is fermenting organic matter that stays
consistently wet or moist. Under ideal conditions, the entire life cycle (from egg to adult)
can be with in 6-7 days. Breeding sites can be found in areas such as garbage
containers, discarded bottles and cans, drains, broken grouting, torn insulation and any
place where there is fermenting and decaying matter.
•
Fruit flies are best controlled by locating and eliminating the source of the infestation.
Persistent presence of fruit fly adults indicates the larvae are developing nearby. One
method of inspection is to cover the drain with a fine mesh screen. Placing a glue board
or sticky trap under the screen will help determine the presence of activity.
•
The number one method of control is through good housekeeping practices Eliminate
potential breeding sites such as garbage, debris and stagnated conditions. No pesticides
are required. Bacterial gels will help reduce organic matter from building up in drains.
Apply with a foaming agent for best results.
DRAIN FLY (Diptera: Psychodidae)
Drain, Filter, Sewage Fly
•
Drain flies (or moth flies) are small, dark, fuzzy, moth-like insects. They are weak fliers,
typically flying only a few feet at a time. During the day, adult flies rest on walls or on the
sides of tubs and shower stalls. They become more active at night, hovering over drains,
sinks and other breeding areas. Drain flies breed in stagnated water or the scum that
collects inside broken grouting, floor drains and trench drains
•
Drain flies lay their eggs in the gelatinous material which accumulates on the sides of
drains and overflow pipes, and the larvae feed on the decaying organic matter and
microscopic plants and animals that occur there. Adults usually emerge in a week or two,
although during the colder months of the year development may take longer.
•
The most effective control method is to clean the drain pipes with a stiff brush, removing all
the slime in which the flies breed. Sometimes it may be necessary to remove the trap to
thoroughly eliminate the breeding media. Pouring hot water down the drain provides shortterm control. Use bacterial gels in drains on a regular basis to remove silt and scum. Drain
flies are perhaps the most common insect inhabitant of sewage treatment plants.
14
PHORID FLY (Phoridae )
Humpbacked or Scuttle Fly)
•
Phorid flies are very small - usually 1/8" or less and are easily distinguished from
other small flies by the characteristic "hump back" shape of their abdomen. Also
known as the "humpbacked" fly, phorid flies are usually tan to dark brown in color
and have dark eyes. Easily confused with fruit flies which have red or orange eyes,
phorid flies are a serious pest of food manufacturing facilities around the world. The
phorid fly will often feed and breed in moist decaying matter. Like other flies, the
phorid fly is a frequent visitor to unsanitary areas and often transmits disease
causing germs.
•
Phorid flies are also a pest of mortuaries and funeral homes and are often referred to
as "coffin flies". In fact phorid fly larvae have been found in open wounds of patients
in hospitals. Phorid flies go through a complete life cycle - egg, larvae, pupae and
adult. The female phorid fly lays about 20 eggs at a time and will lay about 40 - 100
eggs. Larvae emerge in 24 hours and feed for 8 to 16 days. The Phorid fly larvae
then crawl to a drier spot to pupate. The life cycle can be completed within 14-37
days.
•
The basics for phorid fly control are not unlike that for any of the other major fly
species. Control only comes from finding and eliminating all sources of potential
infestation. Finding the breeding areas is the difficult part, and is the most important
part of a total elimination effort. Pesticides and traps only provide remedial
control. The regular cleaning of floor drains is crucial in phorid fly control. Bleach
and hot water will not eliminate larvae or eggs breeding in a drain. The use of
bacterial gels will help dissolve the organic matter where phorid flies live. For best
results apply gel with a foaming agent.
15
HOUSE FLIES (Musca domestica)
Identification
The adult housefly is less than 3/8 inch in length.
They have four dark stripes down the back of their
thorax It is dull gray in color, the sides of its
abdomen are pale, and it has four narrow, black
longitudinal stripes running down its thorax.
Biology and Habits
Larvae of the house fly are cream colored, eyeless
and legless, and have a blunt posterior end and
taper to a point at the head. Mature larvae will grow
to 3/8 to 1/2 inch in length. Young larvae respond
negatively to light and will burrow into the organic
material in which they are developing. Older larvae
respond positively to light and will emerge from their
organic habitat to seek drier and cool areas to
transform into pupae.
Houseflies undergo complete metamorphosis. The female lay eggs singly in
batches of 75 to 150 on any moist medium with sufficient food or larval
development. A female fly will lay 350 to 900 eggs in her lifetime. Eggs
develop into first instar larvae in less than one day, and the larvae go through
three instars in as little as seven days. The larvae then seek out a drier habitat
for pupation, which can last from three days to four weeks. As many as 10 to
12 generations can occur during the summer. Adult houseflies generally live
for 15 to 25 days.
Adults are general feeders and are attracted to nearly anything moist and
decaying, from food products to garbage to excrement. They feed by
regurgitating on the food source and then ingesting the liquefied material with
their sponging mouth parts. During this process they ingest many diseasecausing organisms or pick them up on their bodies.
Adults can migrate more than 5 miles from breeding sites. During the day
adults tend to rest less than five feet from the ground on walls, floors, and other
objects. At night they rest more than five feet above the floor, often on ceilings,
wires, lights and plants.
16
HOUSE FLIES (Musca domestica)
The house fly belongs to a group of flies known as filth flies, named for their habit of laying
their eggs in moist, decaying organic matter - particularly manure and garbage. Each female
lays batches of 100-150 eggs over a 3-4 day period. If temperatures are high, eggs may
hatch within 7.5 hours, otherwise it may take 1-2 days for them to hatch. The eggs hatch
into maggots and feed on the organic material in which they find themselves. The larvae go
through three moults before they stop feeding and burrow for protection in dry surrounding
areas, where they pupate.
Adults mate within one or two days following emergence from their pupal cases. The entire
life cycle can be completed in as little as a week, though more commonly the life cycle takes
up to three weeks for completion.
During the warmer months the life span of the house fly is 2 1/2 weeks but during the cooler
months they overwinter in protected locations in the larval or pupal stage.

MISCELLANEOUS BEETLES
•
Adults up to ¼” long with shinny blue body, reddish legs and
antennae with large club at end. Adults and larvae usually infest
meats such as meal bone, cured meats and animal bones. Found in
museums, taxidermy shops and mausoleums, Up to 2000 eggs are
laid with life cycle complete in about one month.
Red Legged Ham Beetle
•
•
Adults up to ¾”, with a dull black color; larva shinny yellow, long
and cylindrical; up to two years to complete life cycle. Mealworms
are considered scavengers and are among the largest insects that
infest stored products. Most prefer to feed on decaying grain or
milled cereals in damp, poor conditions. These insects are usually
found in places not frequently disturbed such as dark corners, under
sacks, in bins and where feed is stored.
Adults are dark gray with a powdery white underside. Larva are up
to ¾” long, black, very hairy and very active. May infest stored
meats and pet foods, but prefers old skins and hides. Both adults and
larva may feed. Female will deposit up to 800 eggs and life cycle
completed in as little as 60 days
Hide Beetle
.
•
•
Mealworm
(Yellow and Lesser)
A very large beetle, black in color and up to 2” in length. Other
members of family vary in color and size, but usually black and
shinny and fast running. Common under rocks and wood piles, may
enter structures looking for shelter during daylight hours. Most
ground beetles are predators on other insects. Some will give off
foul-smelling odors when disturbed, giving the name of stinkbug.
Clean up of exterior locations is the best method of control.
Ground Beetle
Also called “picnic beetle”, adults vary in color from orange to black.
The sap beetle has very short wings exposing abdomen on top. May
be found in fruits and vegetables, stored foods such as grain, dried
fruits and especially where moldy conditions are presents
Sap Beetle
19
GERMAN COCKROACH (Blattella germanica)
The German Cockroach is one of the most common cockroach species found in food
processing plants, supermarkets, restaurants, institutions and homes. They are found
throughout structures with a preference for warm and humid places. Any crack or
crevice or confined space located near a source of food and/or water is a prime
harborage. German cockroaches are general feeders, but are particularly attracted to
fermented foods.
LIFE CYCLE: Developmental time (egg to adult) can occur in about three months.
Eggs cases are carried by the female roach until maturity. Adult females produce from
4-8 capsules during their lifetime, with each capsule containing 30-40 eggs. Nymphs
hatch within a month and go through a series of instars before reaching the adult stage.
MONITORING: To determine location and even the extent of activity, place sticky traps
or glue boards at intervals of 10-15 feet. Adding a food lure or aggregation pheromone
will enhance attraction. Pyrethrin aerosols provide excellent flushing action and help
determine points of infestation.
CONTROL: The first step in cockroach management is to eliminate the source of food.
Good sanitation is essential. Baits are particularly effective. For best results, apply
multiple bait placements along crack and crevices, near harborages and along
runways. Supplemental application of insect growth regulators (IGR’s) will help with
long-term control.
20
AMERICAN COCKROACH (Periplaneta americana)
American cockroaches are found in commercial establishments such as food processing
plants, restaurants, bakeries and hospitals. Also known as the waterbug or palmetto bug,
its growth can be 1½ inches in length or more. They prefer dark, moist environments
where they will infest drainage systems, basements, boiler rooms, steam tunnels and food
preparation areas. In warmer climates they often will be found living and breeding
outdoors. While they will feed on a variety of foods, decaying organic matter and
fermented foods seems to be preferred.
LIFE CYCLE: Developmental time (egg to adult) will vary according to temperature;
estimates range from 5 months to over a year. The female deposits the egg capsule
(ootheca) usually near a source of food by either simply dropping it or gluing it to a
surface. Adult females usually produce one egg case per month for a period of ten
months, with each capsule containing 14-16 eggs. Nymphs hatch within about two
months and go through a series of (10-13) instars before reaching the adult stage.
MONITORING: To determine location and even the extent of activity, place sticky traps or
glue boards around suspected locations. Adding a food lure will enhance attraction.
CONTROL: Good sanitation is essential. Structural barriers such as screening drains will
help prevent entry and migration. Baits are particularly effective; apply baits around
drains and near harborages. Supplemental applications of insect growth regulators
(IGR’s) will help with long-term control.
21
HOUSE MOUSE (Mus musculus Linnaeus)
The house mouse is the most commonly
encountered and economically important of
the commensal rodents, the Norway and roof
rats being the other two. Mice damage and
destroy materials by gnawing, and eat and
contaminate stored food (i.e., droppings,
urine, disease vectors.).
BIOLOGY: The house mouse is a prolific breeder. They reach sexual maturity
in 35 days and mate when 6-10 weeks old. Pregnancy last about 18-21 days.
There are 6-8 litters per year. A female can have a new litter once every 40-50
days.
Mice have keen senses, except for sight because they cannot see beyond 6
inches and are color blind. They are excellent climbers and can run up
roughened walls, along horizontal pipes and wires. Mice can jump down from an
8 foot height without injury. They can adapt and thrive in cold storage. A mouse
consumes only small amounts of food at each feeding. Required moisture is
normally obtained from food. Mice will produce about 50 droppings per day.
HABITS: Mice are inquisitive. They will explore anything new or changed, and
establish new travel routes, if needed. Their preferred nesting sites are dark,
secluded places where there is abundant nesting material nearby and little
chance of disturbance. They seek shelter as the weather cools and food sources
disappear.
CONTROL: The key to control is through a program of sanitation, structural
repairs and inspection. Some important things to remember:
• Inspect along perimeters and interior locations on a regular frequency, more
often if conditions warrant . Look for signs of activity (i.e., droppings, gnaw
marks, nesting material, etc.
• Mice defecate where they travel, but mostly where they feed.
• Territories are relatively small, and usually will not exceed a 20 ft diameter.
• Snap traps/glue boards must be placed within close proximity to suspect area.
• Glue boards tend to capture juveniles and maybe an occasional adult.
22
NORWAY RAT (Rattus norvegicus
The Norway rat is the largest of the commensal
rodent and the most common in the temperate
regions of the world.
BIOLOGY: Norway rats reach sexual maturity in 2-5 months. Pregnancy
lasts an average of 21-25 days. They are weaned at about 3-4 weeks and
reach sexual maturity at 8-12 weeks. The number of litters can vary from 3-6
per year, each litter averaging about 7-8 young.
Norway rats have poor vision and they are color blind, Their senses of hearing,
smell and taste are keenly developed. Their vibrissae or long whiskers are
acute to feel and touch. They are good runners, climbers and jumpers. Tracks
and footprints - front foot is 4-toed and hind print is 5 toes.
HABITS: Rats are primarily nocturnal and they are very cautious. Although
they constantly explore their surroundings, they will shy away from new objects
and changes. Outdoors, they prefer to nest in burrows in the soil, piles of
rubbish, under concrete slabs, etc. Burrows will have an entrance and an
emergency exit, often hidden under grass or debris.
CONTROL:
Methods of control include pest identification, sanitation,
structural repairs and harborage elimination. Special areas to be addressed:
• Rats defecate somewhat indiscriminately within their territory, but mostly
where they feed..
• Travel distances will range from 100-150 feet for food and water. Look for rub
marks, droppings and clean runways
• Rats are cautious. Pre-baiting with unset snap traps is advisable..
• Glue usually will trap juveniles.
• Outdoors, rats usually live in ground burrows.
23
ROOF RAT (Rattus rattus Linnaeus
The roof rat is smaller than the Norway rat. It is
more comon in the subtropical and tropical regions
of the world.
BIOLOGY: The roof rat reaches sexual maturity in 2-5 months. Pregnancy
usually average 22 days. Young pups are blind and naked at birth, with hair
appearing in about 7 days and eyes opening in 12-14 days. The average
number of litters is 4-6 per year, each containing 6-8 young. Adults live 9-12
months.
Roof rats have poor vision and they are color blind, Their senses of hearing,
smell and taste are keenly developed. Vibrissae or long whiskers are used for
feel and touch. They are good runners, climbers, jumpers and swimmers.
Tracks and footprints - front foot is 4-toed and hind print is 5 toes.
HABITS: Although they constantly explore their surroundings, they shy away
from new objects and changes. They are nocturnal and prefer to nest in the
upper parts of structures, Runways along vertical surfaces will usually include
dark rub or swing marks. Outdoors, they prefer to nest to trees. Several nests
may be located within a given area.
Roof rats typically feed at dusk and again at dawn. They forage in family
groups of up to 10 rats. They prefer to feed in situations that give them
protective cover. Although they eat practically anything, they prefer naturally
occurring seeds, nuts, fruits and berries.
CONTROL is based on detailed inspections and knowing the
behavioral habits. Special areas to be addressed include:
• Roof rats commonly travel up to 300 ft. along established runways.
• Place snap traps along runways, on ledges, drop ceilings and in close
proximity to suspect locations.
• Glue boards are effective for juvenile rodents.

ALLURE MD
- works by interfering with the male Indian meal moth’s
ability to locate female moths and successfully mate with them. Allure MD
dispensers release a high concentration of a synthetic moth sex pheromone,
which mimics the natural pheromone of females and results in a disruption of
the mating process. Males become disorientated and are unable to locate and
mate with females. If male moths cannot find females and mate, the females
cannot lay fertile eggs, causing the moth population to decline.
In addition to Indian meal moths, Allure MD is labeled for Mediterranean flour
moths, tropical warehouse moths, almond moths, tobacco moths and raisin
moths. Each dispenser lasts 90 days, and the dispenser technology reduces
clean-up and shutdown costs associated with other treatment methods. Its low
mammalian toxicity makes Allure MD ideal for sensitive areas such as food
processing plants, warehouses and retail stores.
Mating Disruption
is a way of suppressing
insect populations without the use of pesticides.
 Dispersion - of the concentrated pheromone
 Saturation - of the area to be treated
 Confusion - disruption of the mating process

BUG-CHEKS
Monitor the effectiveness of any fumigation. The BugChek card is a sealed, non-metallic, disposable unit
containing active live confused flour beetles
(Tribolium confusum). Each BUG-CHEK card
contains approximately 10 adults or larva carefully
sealed against escape of eggs, larvae or adults.
Place Bug-Cheks in areas to be fumigated. Choose
typical milling, processing and warehouse locations
that are hard to fumigate effectively - drafty window
areas, dead air/low air exchange spaces, and even
inside of closed pieces of equipment.
FOG-CHEKS
Monitor the effectiveness of a fogging. The window
(screen) permits aerosol droplets from a ULV range of
5 to 30 microns in diameter to pass through into and
conduct the adult or larva.
FOG-CHEK cards are easy to use. Simply bend the
legs down at the score lines on each end and place
the units under pallets, on overhead beams, in aisles,
behind equipment or anywhere there is potential insect
activity. Check the insects that are live, dead or
moribund and the number of insects that are able to
revive after the fogging.
Please place order (by telephone or fax) at least 5-7 days prior to shipping
date. All packages containing live insects will be shipped via overnight
courier.

Flexible Tip
VersaFoamer and Case
Versafoamer is a complete foam application system enclosed in a secure and
portable carry case. The system includes a quiet-running air compressor, 1gallon stainless steel tank, and a 7 ft. hose for application away for the tank.
The 30-L application gun is standard, but the B&G XR valve is an economical
option. The system includes an 8 inch, curved application tip that will serve
most application needs. Optional tips include a flexible plastic tube that can be
used to apply biological cleaners and IGR’s deep into clogged drains.
The complete system fits into the carry case, and the lid can be closed and
locked during application. The compressor (110V and 220V available) cycles
on and off to maintain 35-40 psi in the tank. The tank can be detached (quick
connect) from the compressor and removed from the case for application in
confined spaces.
• To operate the unit, just put 2-3 oz (per gallon of mix) of a foaming agent
along with water and chemical and you are ready to go.

New Protecta EVO CIRCUIT Bait Station
Designed to look like an
electrical/utility box right down to
its
simulated
connectors,
Protecta EVO CIRCUIT is a
specialized bait station to
minimize visibility - restaurants,
corporate offices, and other
sensitive locations.
.
"Like Bell's LANDSCAPE which looks like a rock to the casual observer, the
EVO CIRCUIT, especially when used with the connectors, looks so much like an
electrical box, no one will know it's pest control at work.“
This versatile bait station can be positioned horizontally or vertically to hold
traps or bait, and comes with bait securing rods in two sizes, depending on how
the station is used. Mounted vertically on walls, Protecta EVO CIRCUIT holds
eight 1-oz. (28g) bait BLOX on four long rods. Placed horizontally on the ground
or floor, the station holds either four 1-oz. (28g) bait BLOX on the shorter rods,
the T-REX Rat Snap Trap or the mouse-sized MINI-REX. The bait rods lock into
the station and won't fall out during servicing.
The PROTECTA Landscape is a ratsize bait station designed to blend in
with environment. Its realistic colors
- sandstone and granite - and
naturally textured surface give this
bait station the authentic look of a
rock.
Four vertical bait securing rods hold bait blox securely in the station. It also
holds a TRAPPER T-Rex Rat Snap Trap. This station is made of heavy-duty,
injection-molded plastic with a durable hinge built to withstand frequent
servicing..

Powerful magnetic base locks
snap-traps to metal surfaces
Snap-Trap Magnetic Base that securely holds commonly used traps to any
metal surface (not stainless steel). The plastic base features two powerful
magnets molded into the bottom, while the top has two snap-tabs that hold the
trap in place.
The powerful base securely holds
these five traps:
• Kness Big Snap
• Trapper T-Rex
• Catchmaster Model 621PEZ
• Motomco Tomcat
• Victor Power Kill
The two magnets generate almost 40
lbs. of pull force (pulling straight away
from the surface). In a test they held
7.5 lbs. of exercise weights hanging
straight down (the trap did not slide
down a vertical metal surface).
That’s substantially more than the
average rat weighs.

Live Animal Traps
Built of heavy-gauge, tempered, galvanized steel wire. Trap is preassembled
with spring-loaded doors. Locking system makes trap perform when placed at
almost any angel. Adjustable trigger release pressure mechanism makes trap
easy to bait and set.
#1082 is 5” wide x 5”high x 18” long with heavy duty
high tensile half inch wire mesh. It uses the patented
Easy Set mechanism that allows you to quickly and
easily set the trap or release the animal with only one
hand. This is ideal when placing traps on roofs, in
attics or other difficult locations. For chipmunks and
squirrels.

“ORGANIC” PEST MANAGEMENT
Terad3 BLOX with Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol 0.075%) kills anticoagulantresistant rats and mice yet substantially reduces the risk of secondary
poisoning. It also poses low toxicity to birds. With BLOX, bait translocation is
also reduced.
Terad3 BLOX has a broad label which makes it an excellent choice for
controlling rodents at agricultural and animal production facilities, warehousing
and food processing plants, as well as for commercial and residential accounts.
This 1-oz. extruded block bait is mold and moisture resistant. Its high melting
point keeps the bait stable in temperatures as high as 200 degrees F.

BLACK LIGHT INSPECTIONS
It is important for incoming materials to be carefully inspected for evidence of rodent
infestation prior to being placed in storage. Signs of infestation include fecal
droppings, gnawing marks and nesting materials (i.e., shredded paper, cardboard,
cotton). Another indication of activity are rodent urine stains. Although urine is usually
not visible, it will readily fluoresce under ultra-violet light. A black light is used to
determine the presence of rodent urine on packages of food and non-food items.
Inspection Procedures
• The model B-260, B150, 3C-UV and other models perform best when used under
dimly lit conditions.
• For best results, hold the black light within a close range (6”) of product or pallets to
be inspected.
• Scan the top layer of packages and other potential harborage sites for evidence of
rodent urine stains. Rodent urine fluoresces blue-white to yellow-white in color.
Since rodents usually urinate when in motion, they make a characteristic droplet
pattern that is distinguishable from other fluorescent materials.
• It is important to remember a certain degree of skill is required when using a black
light because other items such as starches, cleaning agents, greases and oils will
also fluoresce. Always check for other physical evidence of activity such as
droppings, nesting materials and gnawing marks.
• Be sure the black light is always properly charged and in good
working order.

BIRD BUFFER Q2 Bird Repellent System
IT REALLY WORKS! - The Bird Buffer Q2
controls flying birds in open spaces, indoors and
outdoors, with a nearly invisible haze of safe,
invisible vapor. The vapor (Rejex-it Bird
Repellent) irritates their eyes and mucous
membranes without risk to their health. Birds that
fly through the haze soon associate the location
with the repellent’s effect and leave the area for
good. Bird Buffers are quiet, safe and extremely
efficient, using very little repellent to cover huge
open areas. Included timers allow for unattended
operation at times of peak bird activity.
Effective against grackles, pigeons, sparrows,
geese, blackbirds, crows and other birds.







The Bird Buffer is designed to control flying birds in large open spaces.
It works equally well indoors and outdoors.
The haze produced is nearly invisible and has a slight “grape” aroma.
Bird Buffers are programmable, allowing for unattended operation.
The 24 hour timer allows for operation during times of peak bird activity.
Guaranteed to reduce bird traffic by 96% in treated areas.
The Bird Buffer Q2 is quiet, compact and easy to mount.

BIRD MANAGEMENT
Super BirdXPeller Pro
- Programmable
species-specific – The new sonic repeller utilizes
intermittent distress calls to create a “danger zone” to
help frighten birds away from infested sites. Each
unit is equipped with four speakers.
BirdXPeller PRO – A series of distress calls are
programmed on to a microchip. Birds perceive danger
when they hear these sounds. They become agitated
and disoriented and they flee the immediate area.
Ideally suited for loading docks, around compactors,
receiving doors and other exterior locations.
QB-4 Repeller
- An ultrasound device with 360
degree coverage to move birds away from roosting
or nesting within a structure; designed for
warehouses, depots and enclosed locations such
as railroad siding and semi-enclosed structures.
Frequencies are above human hearing range, so
most people will not be aware of them.
The great horned owl is a natural predator of many
of many species of birds. Use the Terror Eye
and Predator Owl in conjunction with sound
devices to rid birds from their roosting sites.
69
Geese are stubborn, territorial and aggressive.
Goose Chase
is a non-toxic aversion agent,
made from a bitter tasting part of concord grapes
(methyl antranilate). It renders food sources
unpalatable and inedible to geese.
 PKG: ONE GALLON
Birds instinctively fly to "landing strips" such as
roof ledges, windowsills, building projections,
signs, statues, trusses and beams. Keep them

The most dependable, durable and brightest series of flashlights available.
Streamlight warrants its products to be free of defect for a lifetime of use
(bulb, battery and recharger not included).
“A COMPLETE I NVENTORY OF FLASHLIGHTS AND ACCESSORIES”
84
CHOOSING THE RIGHT FLASHLIGHT
BATTERY TYPE - Over the life of a light, traditional batteries are more costly
than rechargeables, if a light gets frequent use. If a rechargeable light is kept in
its charger when not in use, it’s always ready and fully-charged when needed.
SAFETY RATING - It’s important to know if you’ll be working in a hazardous
environment and exactly what type of hazards may be present. Some flashlights
can be very dangerous in certain environments. The information on the following
page will help you choose a light that’s both safe and effective for your needs.
DISPOSABLE OR RECHARGEABLE - Disposable batteries, either alkaline
orlithium, have excellent storage life, 7 and 10 years respectively. They generally
offer longer run times for a given bulb power and are typically lower in initial
purchase price and easier to keep spares on hand. Their operating costs are
considerably higher than rechargeable batteries and they are seldom as bright.
Lithium cells have high energy density, but are even more costly than alkaline.
LIGHT MEASUREMENT – One should consider light measurement factors when
choosing a portable light:
•
Total Light Output - "Lumens" is a measure of how much light a lamp
produces in all directions. This is a function of the light of a bulb or LED.
•
Peak Beam Intensity - "Candlepower" is the intensity of light at the center
of a spotlight beam when measured in one direction. The brightest spot of a
focused beam is expressed in Candela. It is a function of the bulb and the
effectiveness of the reflector in producing a focused beam. It yields a
tightness of focus and the apparent brightness of light on target at distance.
“Lumens” is the
total light output
“Candela” is the
brightest spot in a
focused beam.
85
FLASHLIGHT SAFETY RATINGS
Any flashlight that will be used in a hazardous environment or confined space
should be properly tested to meet or exceed all applicable safety standards for
those locations. When selecting a flashlight, make sure it carries the proper
approval ratings. Choosing the correct light for your application requires a
thorough understanding of your working environment, and a realistic expectation
of how a properly selected flashlight will operate in those conditions.
Hazardous locations, or potentially explosive atmospheres, are areas where fire
or explosion hazards may exist due to the presence of ignitable concentrations
of flammable gases, liquids, vapors, dusts or ignitable fibers or flyings. These
locations are classified or “grouped’ according to the properties of the flammable
materials that may be present and the likelihood of flammable concentrations.
Under the National Electric Code (NED), there are three classes characterized
by the type of material present:
• Class I - hazardous by the presence of flammable gases, liquids or vapors.
• Class II - hazardous because of the presence of combustible dusts.
• Class III - locations contain easily ignitable fibers or flyings.
The definition of “Division” refers to the likelihood ignitable concentrations of
flammable materials.
Division 1 - designates an environment where ignitable concentrations of
flammable gases, liquids, vapors or dusts can exist some of the time or all of the
time under normal operating conditions or where easily ignitable fibers and
flyings are manufactured, handled or used.
Division 2 - locations are areas where ignitable concentrations are NOT likely
to exist under normal operating conditions or where Class III materials are
stored or handled.

Nylon brush seals are recommended for food handling establishments and
wherever gap protection is needed. They are U.L. Rated as "Gasketing Material
for Fire Doors" (viable from -100ºF to =350ºF).
Type 6 nylon is known for its extremely long life, toughness and ability to regain
its shape (memory) when pressure is removed. This material will not wear
out. Thousands of nylon filaments per foot (up to 4" in length) are locked into a
steel channel which is in turn held in an aluminum extrusion designed to fit
specific size brushes and applications.
Brush seals remain flexible at a wide range of temperatures. Quality brushes are
one of the best choices for pest proofing a door.

BAITS
- Baits are effective at controlling both cockroaches and ants
because both insects serve as carriers spreading the bait toxicant throughout
the entire colony, and eventually destroying it. For effective results apply baits
near harborages and runways.
Maxforce
– uses hydramethylnon as the active ingredient; also available
with fipronil quick action formula; both toxicants are effective against roaches
and ants with a single feeding. Gel baits to be used in and around food
handling establishments.

TRANSPORT ™ Insecticide Roach Bait
Transport (Acetamiprid) kills through several modes of transfer:
• Saliva Exchange
• Cannibalism
• Necrophagy (feeding on corpses)
• Coprophagy (feeding on feces)
Transport offers a unique method of killing cockroaches – including
the nymphs. The superior formulation is highly palatable to
cockroaches. Transport features a unique mode of
and novel bait matrix, which makes it more effective against
control of cockroaches.
•
This data shows that within 24 hours, cockroaches that did not
eat the acetamiprid bait directly, but instead came in contact
with lethal fecal deposits from cockroaches that ate the
acetamiprid bait, were exposed to the active ingredient and
perished.
•
This unique effect caused nearly 100% mortality rate to
cockroaches that didn’t even touch the bait, as well as 100%
mortality to those that did.
 PKG - 4 x 1 oz. Cartridge

Advion® Fire Ant Bait
This unique formulation, containing 0.045% Indoxacarb, uses a natural plant oil
and other ingredients to coat the Indoxacarb around a corn grit granule. These
granules are particularly attractive to foraging workersthat take this bait back to
nest. This quick metabolic action (effecting the nervous system) is distributed
to the larvae and other members of the colony.
Advion® fire ant bait may be applied as a broadcast application or individual
mount treatment. For control of imported fire ants on lawns, recreational areas,
golf courses and other noncrop/nongrazed areas.
PKG: 2 lb container

Advion® Cockroach Bait Gel
A cockroach gel bait that is designed to control pest species of cockroaches
including German, American, Australian, Smoky-Brown, Brown, Asian, and
Brown-Banded. The slight delay in mortality caused by the active ingredient,
indoxacarb, allows cockroaches consume the bait and return to the
harborage site to contaminate other cockroaches resulting in significant
reduction in infestation levels.

HEAT TREATMENT
With the scheduled phase out of methyl bromide and continuing restrictions placed on
pesticides, there is a need to find an alternative resource for controlling insects and
other pests. One such non-chemical approach is the use of heat. First introduced more
then 75 years ago, treating building structures and confined spaces such as empty silos
and bins with elevated temperatures (130-140F) is a viable and effective method for
eliminating pest populations. Let us assist you with your special needs.
Heat treatments offer a variety of benefits
• Controls the insect life cycle, from egg to adult.
• Heat does not leave damaging residues.
• During treatment other sections of the facility can continue operations.

INSECT HEAT TREATMENT EQUIPMENT
Very soon, it will no longer be possible to use methyl bromide to control insect
infestation. Managers of food facilities looking for an effective substitute can
now rely on insect heat treatment equipment .
As an alternative to pesticide applications, spot insect heat treatment with steam
heaters is a cost-effective method of controlling insect outbreaks without having
to shut down the entire plant.
Portable and permanent heaters use plant steam to provide quick, on-demand
heat treatments even during production hours. Typically, heat treatment costs
are less, per application, than chemical treatment.
Choose from the selections on this page to learn how insect heat treatment
solutions from Armstrong can eliminate pests in your food facility.
BAQ Series Hot Bin (steam) Heater
Heavy-duty, portable Armstrong Hot Bin Heaters provide an effective way to
heat bins, silos and other hard-to-access areas within a food facility. These
cost-effective heaters are ideal for heat treatment for insect control, temporary
comfort heat and freeze protection. And because they’re portable, Hot Bin
Heaters heat multiple areas with a single heat source.
