Nikki Giovanni's outspokenness, in her writing and in person, has brought the eyes of the

A prolific writer, Sonia Sanchez is serious and original. Her poems depict the struggles
between black people and white people, between men and women, and between cultures.
Her brilliant sense of history and vision of her people helps her to create expressive poetry
with themes and underlying tones to which millions can relate. Sanchez deals with the
characterization of women in her work, making it clear to audiences the stereotypes that
Black women endured in the 1960s and 1970s. Deemed "a lion in literature's forest" by poet
Maya Angelou, Sanchez explores women's lives, the struggles and triumphs of people of
color, and global and humanist themes through her writings. She is the author of 14 books
including Shake Loose My Skin: New and Selected Poems.

First Woman Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma; Spokesperson for the
Native Americans
In 1985, Wilma Mankiller became the first woman chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma,
winning the election with 56 percent of the vote. She was the first female in modern history to
lead a major Native American tribe. Through her commitment to rural community
development, she persistently pursued proposals for various housing, education, and
healthcare projects. During Mankiller's tenure as Principal Chief, tribal membership tripled in
size, the annual budget doubled, and the number of tribal members increased dramatically.
Health services and children services were greatly expanded. Mankiller, who left office in 1995
due to poor health, co-authored Mankiller: A Chief and Her People, which tells the story of the
Cherokee Nation.

Emmy Award-Winning Co-Anchor of "Primetime"
John Quiñones is co-anchor of "Primetime" and was most recently a correspondent for
"Primetime Thursday" and "20/20”. Previously, he worked as a correspondent for "PrimeTime
Live" since November 1991. Quiñones has also served as a co-anchor of "Downtown,"
covering unique stories for the newsmagazine that premiered in October 1999. Quiñones'
recent work includes a "Primetime" hidden camera report in which he went undercover to
reveal how clinics were performing unnecessary surgical procedures as part of a major nationwide insurance scam. He reported on a religious sect in Northern Arizona that forces its young
female members to take part in polygamous marriages. He also reported on such diverse
topics as the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case, the plight of conjoined twins, and the ongoing
search for the notorious Zodiac killer.

World Re-Known Olympic Track Champion
Olympian Yolanda Gail Devers health began to deteriorate while training for the 1988 Olympic
Games in Seoul, South Korea. She suffered from migraine headaches, sleeplessness, and
fainting spells, and in 1990 her condition was diagnosed as Graves' disease, a thyroid
disorder. After months of painful radiation treatment, with brutal side effects, Devers resumed
training and won the Athletics Congress championship and finished second at the world
championships in Tokyo. In 1992, less than 17 months after doctors had considered
amputating her feet, Gail Devers won a gold medal in the 100 meter dash at the Olympic
Games in Barcelona, Spain. Gail Devers had a tremendous season in 2003, winning the USA
and World indoor 60-meter hurdles titles, and breaking her own American record in the
semifinals at USA Indoors. She was awarded the USATF's 1999 Visa Humanitarian Athlete of
the Year.

A.C. Green has played in more consecutive games than anyone in the history of the NBA:
1,192 games. Over the course of his 16-year career that included three Championship teams
with the Los Angeles Lakers. Green established the A.C. Green Youth Foundation in 1989
with the main focus on sexual abstinence education. Through his “I’ve Got The Power” and
“Game Plan” abstinence curriculums, Green made it his mission to help young people build
self-esteem and character, and learn moral and ethical principles that can help them make

recognized in the House of Representatives’ Congressional Record of October 26, 1999. In

Newspaper columnist William Raspberry is a highly-regarded journalist for the Washington

Rita Dove served as Poet Laureate of the United States and Consultant to the Library of
Congress from 1993 to 1995, making her the youngest person and the first African-American
to receive this highest official honor in American letters and is currently Poet Laureate of the
Commonwealth of Virginia. She has received numerous literary and academic honors, among
them the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1987 for Thomas and Beulah, a collection of
interrelated poems loosely based on her grandparents' life. Rita Dove is currently
Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

On November 14, 1960, Ruby Nell Bridges became the first African-American child to
desegregate an elementary school. On that day, federal marshals escorted Ruby into William
Frantz Public School in New Orleans, Louisiana, and into history. Her brave march into school
attracted attention locally and nationwide. Through My Eyes, written by Bridges, is a true
account of what she experienced as integration unfolded around her in 1960. According to
Bridges, fate led her to the job of improving the quality of education for all black children.

As a nationally renowned orator, Bernice A. King has inspired thousands from all walks of life.

convictions. A successful businessman when he accepted the head basketball coach position

Growing up poor in Wilmington, Delaware, Dr. Bertice Berry was told by a high school teacher
that she was "not college material." Dr. Berry not only graduated Magna Cum Laude from

earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Kent State. Dr. Berry taught sociology and statistics at Kent

Learning from the example of her parents, Marian Wright Edelman has never stopped her
battle for equality, freedom, and civil rights. Growing up in the segregated town of
Bennetsville, South Carolina, Edelman saw the terrible effects of racial segregation. She
graduated from Yale Law School in 1963 and moved to Mississippi, becoming the first AfricanAmerican woman admitted to the state bar. It was in Mississippi that she experienced first
hand institutionalized illiteracy, poverty, hunger, lack of health care, and lack of hope. Edelman
assisted in restoring federal Head Start funds, expanded food stamp eligibility, and served as
council to the Child Development Group. In 1973, Marian Wright Edelman established the
Children’s Defense Fund. She has authored several books.
