Commencement Traditions
THE SEAL
The West Virginia University Board of Regents adopted the seal on June 15, 1869. The Regents’ original, handwritten
resolution is located in the University Archives at the Wise Library. The Greek motto inscribed in the inner circle translates
to: “Add to your faith virtue and to virtue knowledge.” The Latin verse inscribed on the outer circle translates to: “Seal
of the West Virginia University. Established 7 February, 1867.” The hills depicted behind Woodburn Circle reflect the
institution’s stability, and a rising sun indicates its prosperity.
THE MACE
The mace is a symbolic tradition that originated during the Middle Ages. The University Marshal brings this ornamental
staff of authority to the platform and taps it three times to signify the beginning of the ceremony. It represents the official
authority of the University president and precedes him or her during Commencement and inauguration. Smaller batons
are used to signify the designation of authority when the president is not in attendance.
THE REGALIA
The history of academic regalia worn today dates to the Middle Ages. The oldest universities of northern Europe evolved
from ecclesiastical institutions where both faculty and students were regarded as part of the clergy and dressed in clerical
garb. The head covering of modern academic costume was developed from the skullcap worn by the clergy in cold
weather to protect their tonsured heads. At universities, this skullcap acquired a point on top, which gradually evolved
into a tassel. The bonnet with tassel is still worn by some, but the mortarboard is more common.
The gown worn today evolved from the habit worn by Benedictine monks. No trimming is found on bachelor’s or master’s
gowns, but for those holding doctoral degrees, the gown is faced down the front and trimmed on the sleeves with velvet.
Today’s hood is colored according to the scholarly field of the individual and bears the official colors of the institution
that conferred the degree.
THE ACADEMIC PROCESSIONAL
The sequence of the processional is as follows: members of the platform party, deans, faculty, degree candidates, honored
guests, and the University president.
THE MARSHALS
The tradition of academic marshals comes from storied English universities. The Grand Marshal is the chief protocol officer
who coordinates the ceremonial traditions of Commencement, including the processional and recessional. The Grand
Marshal is also responsible for the school’s relics, including the mace and batons. Marshals are typically members of the
faculty. Student marshals may be selected to help facilitate individual ceremonies.

Congratulations from President Gee
Dear Graduates,
Congratulations on reaching this important milestone in your life’s journey.
Since you arrived at West Virginia University, you have taken on and conquered every challenge
that came your way. You navigated through requirements and electives, early morning English
classes, and late-night calculus study marathons. You have worked tirelessly for years with this
day in mind.
You came here in need of something we possess. You leave here possessing something for which
there is a desperate need.
You possess not only facts and figures, but the faith and freedom to seek new answers and to
ask new questions. Your task will not be easy, but my confidence in you is full and complete.
In my short time on campus, I have already witnessed your remarkable passion and curiosity,
your devotion to ideas, and willingness to take action. With those qualities, and your education,
you will go far.
Wherever life takes you, always remember your alma mater.
We will not forget you.
E. Gordon Gee
President

Virginia, the University of Richmond Trustee Board as a member of the executive committee and chair of
the investment committee, the Virginia Museum Board of Trustees, and the WVU Foundation Board of
Directors, where he serves as a member of the executive committee and chairs the investment committee.

on impacting young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing
values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Tattersall serves as a National Trustee and
was the founder of the local Richmond chapter, where he has served as president since 1998. He was
recently appointed to the national organization’s board of directors.

2014 Order of Augusta
The Order of Augusta is awarded to a select group of each year’s Outstanding Seniors who have shown superior scholarship, leadership,
and service as an undergraduate. This award, the highest given to a student by the University, is named for its historical significance in
the state. Augusta was among the original names considered by the Legislature when the state seceded from Virginia in 1863.
Brooke Bertus, from Parkersburg, West Virginia, will graduate with degrees in biology and math. She is the vice president of
Mortar Board National Senior Honorary, co-president of the WVU Dance Marathon executive board, vice president of fund-raising

IRES internship to perform research, which she is passionate about. Following graduation, she will enroll in a master’s of public
health program in epidemiology, and later, WVU’s School of Medicine. She would like to apply her epidemiology and medicine in
rural, international situations.
Zachary Claudio, from Charleston, West Virginia, will graduate with a degree in chemistry. He is a member of the WVU men’s soccer
team, the representative for his team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and member of Phi Lambda Upsilon Honorary
Chemical Society. Last summer, he held a research internship under Jessica Hoover, assistant professor of chemistry, where he
learned proper etiquette and how to better communicate his research results to others. In 2012, he spent time job-shadowing at
the Charleston Area Medical Center Trauma and Intensive Care Unit. He wants to stay within the state upon graduation and plans
to become a reconstructive plastic surgeon.
Jessica Harlee, from Bel Air, Maryland, will graduate with a degree in industrial engineering. She is best known for her success with
the women’s basketball team, winning the program’s first Big 12 regular season championship earlier this year. She is the women’s
basketball representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In addition, she’s a member of the Institute of Industrial
Engineers and Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial Engineering Honorary Society. She has earned a lot of professional experience, including
time as an administrative intern at Mon General Hospital and in manufacturing administration at Mylan Pharmaceuticals. After
graduation, she will join a consulting group in Pittsburgh.
Priyanka Jagannath, from Charleston, West Virginia, will graduate with a degree in chemistry. She is the president and four-year
member of Emergency USA, the fund-raising chair of Alpha Epsilon Delta, the premedical honor society, and an active member of
the American Chemical Society Student Affiliates. Previously, she was the president of the Global Medical and Dental Brigades. She
has had various research opportunities in her time as a student, including at the Eye Institute and at the Summer Undergraduate
Research Institute for Neuroscience. As part of the Global Medicine and Dental Brigades, she took two trips to Honduras. She will
enroll in the WVU School of Medicine in the fall and hopes to become a retinal surgeon.
Rachel James, from Crawford, West Virginia, will graduate with a degree in civil engineering. She is the recipient of a 2013 Goldwater
Scholarship. In addition, she has been a member of the Society of Women Engineers for the past four years and currently serves
as the professional development chair. She is also a four-year member of American Society of Civil Engineers. Since September
2011, she has been an undergraduate research assistant for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where she
also served as a teaching assistant during the past semester. She hopes to one day become a civil engineering professor with an
emphasis in transportation and infrastructure management.
Rachel Manning, from Huntingtown, Maryland, will graduate with degrees in agriculture and extension education and agribusiness
management and rural development. She is active within the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design as a
member of student council, Welcome Back to School BBQ, and Spring Formal. She is the historian of the Dairy Science Club and
served as president of the Block and Bridle Club, among many other activities and organizations. She has also visited Austria,
Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands on study abroad trips. She has also worked as a student teacher at Graton High
School and will continue her studies upon graduation to pursue a doctoral degree in the hope of one day becoming a high school
agricultural education teacher.
Caroline Miskovsky, from Hedgesville, West Virginia, will graduate with degrees in English literature and Slavic and East European
studies. She has been a student assistant for the Summer Study Abroad WVU at Oxford, a teacher’s assistant for a Polish film class,
and a member of the WVU women’s club ultimate Frisbee team. She spent the fall 2012 semester in the Czech Republic studying
as an exchange student at Masaryk University. She also worked two part-time jobs to pay her way through college. She plans to
stay at WVU and pursue a master’s degree in curriculum and education with a certification in secondary English.
Benjamin Seebaugh, from Parkersburg, West Virginia, will graduate with degrees in international studies, political science, and
women’s and gender studies. He was WVU’s 2013-14 Student Government Association vice president. He was also a two-term
vice president of the Young Democrats and a student representative on the Council for Women’s Concerns, the Student Conduct
Board, and the OneWVU Social Justice Committee. He has studied abroad twice, first in Santander, Spain, and, a year later, in
England at the University of Manchester. He was named a Truman Scholar in 2012. His goal is to fight against international human
rights violations. To do so, he is pursuing more experience in the nonprofit and governmental sectors of human rights advocacy.

Dianne D. Anderson
Dianne Dubetz Anderson is the first executive director of the Great Lakes Energy Institute at Case Western Reserve
University. Since 2008, Anderson has been inspiring faculty to aim their research toward the world’s most pressing energy
problems, having herself spent 30 years working in energy. Case Western has quadrupled its level of energy-related
research since the launch of the institute.
Anderson previously worked for BP for 25 years and was appointed president, U.S. West of Rockies Fuels, in 2006.
Having joined BP in 1983, she progressed through roles in upstream exploration and downstream transportation fuels,
natural gas, and electricity. Anderson held several global leadership positions over her career, across the United States
and internationally in London and Krakow, Poland. In a variety of strategic and operating roles, Anderson brought clean
fuels to market with the enactment of the Clean Air Act and managed natural gas and electric-power regulatory affairs
for Canada and the United States.
Anderson graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia University in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
She completed senior-executive development programs at Harvard, Cambridge University, and Northwestern University,
and was a visiting faculty member in Stanford University’s program on Customer Focused Innovation. Anderson currently
serves as a member of the Statler College’s Engineering and Computer Science Enterprise Visiting Committee. She and
her husband, Jim, who is also a WVU graduate, live in Cleveland, Ohio.
RALPH M. BARNES SENIOR SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Established by the family of Ralph M. Barnes, an alumnus of the College of Engineering, to encourage, recognize, and
reward superior academic performance, this award goes to the graduate(s) with the highest grade point average during
their junior and senior years while enrolled as a full-time student. Recipients will be announced during the ceremony.
WVU FOUNDATION OUTSTANDING SENIORS

The Justitia Officium Award
The WVU College of Law Justitia Officium Award recognizes outstanding contributions and service to the legal profession and is the highest honor the
WVU College of Law bestows. Established in 1978, in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the WVU College of Law, the Justitia
Officium Award is presented annually. A bronze plaque bearing the recipient’s name and year awarded is mounted in the lobby of the WVU College of Law.
Forest “Jack” Bowman
Forest “Jack” Bowman is the Jackson & Kelly Professor of Law Emeritus at the West Virginia University College of Law. He taught at WVU Law
for 23 years, retiring in 2002. During his tenure, he was named Professor of the Year by seven graduating classes and University Professor of the
Year in 1998. In 1988, he was named Professor of the Year for all of higher education in the state by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia.
Professor Bowman is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation, an honor bestowed upon only one-third of one percent of all America’s lawyers. He
is a member of the first class of fellows inducted in 1999. He is the only three-time recipient of the Certificate of Merit, the highest award the West
Virginia State Bar can bestow on one of its members. While on the faculty of the College of Law, he developed a continuing legal education seminar
business which took him to 31 states and two Canadian provinces, lecturing lawyers on legal ethics, lawyer malpractice, time management, stress
management and professionalism. In 1995, the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute awarded him the Harrison Tweed Award
for outstanding contributions to continuing legal education in America.
In 2003, Professor Bowman was inducted into WVU’s Order of Vandalia and, in 2011, he was named the University’s Outstanding Alumnus. He is
also a former president of the West Virginia Bar Association and is a past chair of the Board of Visitors of the Salvation Army’s Evangeline Booth
College in Atlanta, Georgia. Professor Bowman is a former captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps. After leaving the Army, he
served a four-year term as Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for West Virginia. In 1970, he was named the first full-time executive director
of the West Virginia State Bar and, in 1975, he was appointed the first administrative director of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.
A native West Virginian, Professor Bowman was the first person in his family to attend college. He is a 1960 graduate of West Virginia University,
where he served as student body president in 1959-60 and as Summit of Mountain (then the ranking WVU men’s honorary) in 1960-61. He earned
his J.D. from the WVU College of Law in 1963 and in 1977 was named a graduate fellow of the Institute for Court Management.
Professor Bowman lives in Morgantown where he continues his work with the law, serving as special ethics counsel to the Pittsburgh-based law firm
of Burns White. He is married to the former Myla Woodford of Belington, West Virginia. They have two sons and three grandchildren.
The Honorable O.C. Spaulding
The Honorable O.C. “Hobby” Spaulding was Judge for the 29th Judicial Circuit serving Putnam and Mason counties for 19 years. He retired at the
end of 2011 due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
Judge Spaulding was born in Fairmont and raised in Huntington. He graduated in 1967 from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in
business. He earned his J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1973. Before attending WVU Law, Judge Spaulding was a systems
engineer at IBM in Baltimore, Maryland. He credits Willard Lorensen, former dean of the College of Law, for setting him on a path in criminal law.
In his second semester at WVU Law, at the request of Dean Lorensen, Judge Spaulding worked undercover in organized gambling in Morgantown.
Following graduation, Judge Spaulding established a practice in Hurricane and served as general counsel to the Putnam General Hospital. From
1977 to 1987, he was the full-time prosecuting attorney for Putnam County. He began serving as circuit judge for Putnam and Mason Counties in
1993. Over the course of his career, Judge Spaulding was appointed 14 times to fill in as a justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia.
A past president of the West Virginia Judicial Association, he served during the year when Governor Manchin appointed a commission to study
the selection of state judges.
Judge Spaulding has long valued his role as a mentor to others and was a frequent continuing legal education teacher. He began teaching criminal
law to his fellow prosecutors and his activities as a mentor accelerated upon becoming a judge, especially when it came to explaining Supreme
Court decisions on criminal cases. Judge Spaulding is also a longtime advocate of recording the entire police interrogation process as a means of
minimizing false confessions, ensuring that suspect rights are observed, and using these detailed recordings to aid judges during pre-trial suppression
hearings. Judge Spaulding has been generously assisting WVU Law students in the West Virginia Innocence Project to draft legislation to mandate
recording of the interrogation process. He sees his work with law students as the capstone to his distinguished legal career.
In January 2014, Judge Spaulding was named the recipient of the Mayo Lester Community Service Award, which recognizes an individual who has
demonstrated outstanding community leadership in Putnam County. In 2013, the Putnam County Youth Reporting Center was renamed the O.C.
Spaulding Training Center in his honor.
Judge Spaulding is married to Cabell County Circuit Judge Jane Hustead.

Chris Sarandon
Chris Sarandon is an American actor who is best known for playing Prince Humperdinck in Rob Reiner’s film, The Princess Bride, as well
as the vampire Jerry Dandridge in Fright Night and Detective Mike Norris in the first entry of the Child’s Play series. He provided the
speaking voice of Jack Skellington in Tim Burton’s animated Disney film, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and was nominated for an
Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Leon in Dog Day Afternoon.
Sarandon was born and raised in Beckley, West Virginia, the son of restaurateur Chris Sarandon, Sr. and Cliffie. His mother’s parents
were Greek immigrants, and his father, whose surname was originally Sarandonethes, was a Greek immigrant as well. He graduated
from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley and went on to West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor of fine arts degree
in speech and drama, graduating magna cum laude. He earned his master’s degree in theater from the Catholic University of America
in Washington, D.C.
After graduation, Sarandon toured with Catholic University’s National Players, playing Shakespeare and Moliere and acting as a lighting
designer and truck driver. He worked at an improv company in Washington, D.C., before becoming involved in regional theatre, making
his professional debut in The Rose Tattoo in 1965. In 1968, Sarandon moved to New York, where he landed his first television role as
Dr. Tom Halverson on The Guiding Light, a role he played until 1973. He then appeared in the primetime television movies The Satan
Murders and Thursday’s Game, before landing the role of AI Pacino’s transsexual wife in Dog Day Afternoon, a performance that earned
him nominations for Best New Male Star of the Year at the Golden Globes and Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards.
Sarandon appeared in The Rothschilds and The Two Gentlemen of Verona on Broadway, as well making regular appearances at
Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw festivals in the United States and Canada. He also appeared in a series of television roles that
mirrored his affinity for the classics and took roles in films opposite the late Margaux Hemingway, both in the 1976 thriller, Lipstick, and
as an attorney-turned-demon in the 1977 shocker, The Sentinel.
In the 1980s, Sarandon took on a wide range of roles, including the title role in the madefor-television movie, The Day Christ Died, and
as Thomas Wolfe in You Can’t Go Home Again. He received accolades for his dual portrayals of Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay in a
made-for-television version of A Tale of Two Cities. He then co-starred with Dennis Hopper in The Osterman Weekend, which was based
on the Robert Ludlum novel of the same name, and with Goldie Hawn in Protocol. These films were followed by another mainstream
success playing the vampire-next-door in the teen horror film, Fright Night.
In 1992, he played the dual roles of Joseph Curwen and Charles Dexter Ward in The Resurrected. He then reprised his role as Jack
Skellington in the Capcom sequel to the original film, Oogie’s Revenge, in the Disney/Square video games, Kingdom of Hearts and Kingdom
of Hearts II, and in Halloween Screams and the Haunted Mansion Holiday, a three-month overlay of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
Sarandon went on to work in television again with a recurring role as Dr. Burke on NBC’s long-running medical drama, ER, and as a
recurring character on The Practice. In the 2000’s, he made guest appearances on many television series, notably as the necromancer
demon, Armand, in Charmed and as the superior court judge, Barry Krumble, in six episodes of Judging Amy. More recently, he has
appeared as a guest star on Law and Order SVU and The Good Wife.
He returned to Broadway in 2006 playing Signor Naccarelli in the six-time Tony award-winning musical, The Light in the Piazza at Lincoln
Center. He has recently appeared in Cyrano de Bergerac as Antoine de Guiche, alongside Kevin Kline, Jennifer Garner, and Daniel Sunjata.
He is currently directing a play about sexual assault on women that has had a series of readings in New York.
Sarandon met his wife, Joanna Gleason, daughter of Monty Hall, while performing on Broadway in 1991 in the short-lived musical, Nick
& Nora. The two married in 1994 and, between them, have four grown children and two grandchildren. They have appeared in a number
of films together, including Edie & Pen, American Perfokt, and Let the Devil Wear Black.
He currently sits on the advisory board for the Greenbrier Valley Theatre in Lewisburg, West Virginia.

Bill Sheedy
Bill Sheedy leads Visa’s corporate strategy and mergers and acquisitions efforts, global policy and government relations,
and oversees strategic initiatives for the company, including Visa’s relationships and interests in Europe. In this role, he
is responsible for charting the company’s strategic direction and driving growth, expanding the company’s relationships
with governments and regulators globally, and leading critical initiatives and transactions with clients and partners around
the world.
More recently, Sheedy was Group President, Americas, and oversaw Visa’s business across nearly 50 countries in North
America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. In this role, Sheedy was responsible for issuer, merchant,
acquirer, and third-party processor relationships and led efforts to expand card issuance, merchant acceptance, and
usage of Visa-branded products and services across the Americas. He also had responsibility for Visa’s core credit, debit,
prepaid, commercial, small business, and co-brand businesses.
Previously, Sheedy served as president of the company’s North America region. Sheedy also played a leadership role
in managing Visa’s corporate restructuring that merged multiple regional Visa entities into a single global company,
culminating in Visa’s successful initial public offering in 2008. Earlier in his career, Sheedy managed Visa’s U.S. pricing
and economics strategies. He joined the company in 1993 as an executive in Visa’s strategy and pricing division.
Sheedy holds a bachelor of science from West Virginia University and an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame.

Keith Bowers
For nearly three decades, Keith Bowers has been at the forefront of applied ecology, land conservation, and sustainable
design. As the founder and president of Biohabitats, Keith has built a multidisciplinary organization focused on conservation
planning, ecological restoration, and regenerative design. Using a living-systems approach as the basis for all of its
work, Biohabitats employs whole-systems thinking through applied ecology to address a variety of projects at multiple

Gale Catlett
Gale Catlett was a West Virginia University Mountaineer basketball player from 1959-63, helping the
Mountaineers to records of 24-4, 26-6 and 23-8, as well as attaining two NCAA tournament berths. After
graduating from the School of Physical Education in 1963, he started a career in college coaching that took
him to Richmond, Davidson, Kansas and Kentucky as an assistant coach. In 1972, he was named head coach
at the University of Cincinnati, posting a 126-44 record and three NCAA tournament appearances in his six
seasons. During the 1976-77 season, his Cincinnati team was ranked as high as second in the nation. Catlett
returned to his alma mater as head coach in 1978 and went on to post a record of 439-276 in his 24 year tenure
-- the longest in WVU basketball history.
Taking 20 teams to postseason play (eleven to the NCAA, nine to the NIT) he coached two Metro Conference
champions, five Atlantic 10 regular season and two A-10 tournament champions and shepherded WVU’s move
into Big East competition, where his 1998 club advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Catlett retired in 2002 with
an overall coaching mark of 565-320, making him the 45th Division I coach to win 500 career games.
Catlett was inducted into the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences Hall of Fame in 1992 and was
recognized as the CPASS Outstanding Alumnus in 1999. Catlett served as honorary chair in celebration of the
College’s 75th Anniversary and served as moderator for the keynote event, the sports legends symposium.
The sports legends panel featured Catlett, Jerry West, Rod Hundley, Rod Thorn, Sam Huff, Chuck Howley and
Kristin Quackenbush-DiBartolomeo.
Catlett is married to the former Anise Vandervort, a Morgantown native and former WVU cheerleader who
earned a master’s degree from the WVU School of Physical Education. They have two daughters, Krista, married
to Ed Neumann, and Kara, married to Thomas Brown. When in West Virginia, Catlett and his wife are usually
at their home in Morgantown or on the farm in his hometown of Hedgesville. In winter, they enjoy Florida and
Hawaii’s warmer temperatures.
Kelyn Earley
Kelyn Earley completed her bachelor’s degree in physical education teacher education in December 2013. She
is dual-certified to teach physical education and health education to pre-K-12th grade students. While at West
Virginia University, she was actively engaged in the PETE majors club, worked in the Kaleidoscope program,
and was a lifeguard and swim instructor.

Congratulations from the WVU Alumni Association
Dear Graduates,
As president of the WVU Alumni Association, it is my honor to officially welcome you to our alumni family!
You are part of a growing, passionate group of more than 190,000 Mountaineers living all over the world.
The WVU Alumni Association is here to keep you connected to your alma mater. Just because you aren’t here
on campus, doesn’t mean you can’t stay connected. Help recruit students. Join one of our more than 100 alumni
chapters/groups located all over the world. Volunteer your time. It’s easy. Don’t leave WVU behind. Visit our
new grad page (alumni.wvu.edu/new-grad) for helpful tips and other important info on staying connected to
your alma mater.
And, as a new grad, we are pleased to offer your first-year membership in the WVU Alumni Association at no
cost to you, so take advantage of our programs and services geared toward keeping you connected to and
engaged in the life of WVU. Visit alumni.wvu.edu for more information.
As you begin the next leg of your journey, we offer these tips:
•Stop by one of your favorite spots on campus one last time.
•Grab your smartphone and capture these special moments with friends and family.
•Hug your friends.
•Take a few pepperoni rolls home with you – they freeze well!
•Follow us on social media – we’re on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
•Make sure your new contact information is up-to-date by signing up for the Mountaineer Connection:
www.mountaineerconnection.com.
•Last, but not least, visit often – The Erickson Alumni Center is a home for all Mountaineers!
Again, congratulations on this wonderful achievement. We are glad to have you as part of our Mountaineer
family. We hope to see you soon!
In Mountaineer Spirit,
Stephen L. Douglas
President, WVU Alumni Association
