An exhibition to celebrate almost 150 years
of netsuke collecting in Europe, from the
eponymous The Hare with Amber Eyes
(featured in this display) of Edmund de
Waal’s family memoir, to contemporary
netsuke by three British carvers. The show
offers a unique opportunity to enjoy and
learn about these small carvings that have
captivated the Europeans, to such an extent
that netsuke are better known outside
Japan than in the land of their creation.
The exhibition coincides with the
International Netsuke Society’s convention
in London (10th – 14th May). This is
the first major convention in Europe
for over 20 years, recognising the
enduring enthusiasm for this art form.
