BANGKOK - idea holidays
GENERAL INFORMATION
Thailand is a southeast Asian, predominantly Buddhist kingdom almost equidistant between India and China.
For centuries known by outsiders as Siam, Thailand has been something of a southeast Asian migratory,
cultural and religious cross- roads. With an area of some 510,000 square kilometers. Thailand shares borders
with Myanmar to the west and north, Laos to the north-east, Cambodia to the west, and Malaysia to the south.
Geographically speaking , Thailand is divided into six major regions : the mountainous north where elephants
work forests and winter temperatures are sufficiently cool to permit cultivation of temperate fruits such as
strawberries and peaches; the sprawling north-east plateau, largely bordered by the Mekong River, where the
world’s oldest Bronze Age civilization flourished some 5,000 years ago; the central plain , one of the world’s
most fertile rice and fruit growing areas; the eastern coastal plain , where fine sandy beaches support the growth
of summer resorts; western mountains and valleys, suitable for the development of hydro-electric power; and
the peninsular south where arresting scenic beauty complements economically vital tin mining, rubber
cultivation and fishing.
HEALTH: No vaccinations are required to enter Thailand.
CLIMATE: Tropical with three distinct seasons: Summer (Mar - May), Rain (May), Rain with plenty of
sunshine (Jun - Sep), and Cool (Oct-Feb). Average temperatures range from21'C (53'F) to 30'C (86'F)
AT THE AIRPORT: Check-in times / 2 hours for international flights and 1 hour for domestic flights.
CREDIT CARDS AND TIPPING: Credit cards are widely accepted in Thailand. Tipping is not expected, but
appreciated where service charge not included in bill.
BANGKOK
Bangkok can be all things to all people. Essentially a paradox in its
blend of old and new, of traditional Oriental splendour overlaid with a
modern Western façade, the Thai capital defies easy definition. Yet the
inescapable fact is that the city is ultimately totally enchanting. It is
undoubtedly one of Asia's most exciting cities, and one of the world's
largest, promising to reveal to each traveller the wild and untamed
mysteries of the east.
During the past two decades, the Thai capital has undergone more
change than probably at any other period during its history. Yet, amid
all the new development, Bangkok is still a city of temples and palaces,
of golden spires and orange tiered roofs, of saffron-robed monks and serene Buddha images. Amazingly, in the
midst of dynamic growth, the city Bangkok manages to preserve its cultural heritage to a marked degree.
Of the 30 or so temples in Bangkok, the largest is the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, which houses an
impressive statue of the deity. The famous Floating Market is a delight to visitors and well worth a visit. As the
sun lurches towards the horizon in the west and the sweat cools, this city of royalty and religion comes alive
with a palpable decadence. Music and dazzling neon advertise a miasma of trendy bars and nightclubs, as well
as the notorious 'girlie joints' that have ensured the Pat Pong district its reputation for hedonism.
