Across New York State – A Family Concert by The Hill Brothers:
This interactive family concert program focuses on music and
folklore from New York State’s history with a special emphasis
on the Erie Canal. The Hill Brothers use humor and great songs
from the period and lots of audience participation in this fun-filled
musical trip across the state. Perfect for children and families,
wide appeal for multi-generational audiences from toddlers
to seniors.
The African American Cultural Center: The AACC and Buffalo
City Ballet team up to present “From Senegal to Ellington”, two
back-to-back dance performances exploring the journey of classical
African Dance performed by 14 members of the African American
Cultural Center’s Dancers and Drummers and its relationship to
modern dance performed by 6 members of Buffalo City Ballet.
This performance highlights how two major Buffalo cultural
institutions keep dance alive with its African and African
American roots, providing Buffalo with the rich cultural diversity
of dance choreography available in Western New York. These
performances are suitable for all age groups and a must see for
dance enthusiasts.
Arena Painting: Join Charles Clough – the internationally
acclaimed, Buffalo born-and-bred artist in this large-scale
community art project. The public will be invited to make huge
paintings with Mr. Clough’s uniquely designed “Big Fingers”
painting tools. The large-scale community artworks will be created
in a manner related to the abstract-expressionist works that are
central to Buffalo’s Albright-Knox Art Gallery collection. Arena
Painting will provide the public with an opportunity to create their
own art “arena,” with ample space at Canalside for spectators to
view the process.
Babik: Part of the Music at the Ruins Concert Series - award
winning Gypsy Jazz group Babik will perform in the Historic Ruins
at Canalside. Babik (pronounced bah-beek) is a gypsy jazz quartet
that plays original music with gypsy flares as well as 1930’s era
swing created by Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli – this
music reaches across stylistic, cultural and generational boundaries
to engage every listener. This performance will serve as a rare
area appearance for the group. Although the group’s fan base is
strongest in Western New York, they only perform a few area
shows per year. Voted “Best Jazz Band in Buffalo” five times –
they have received standing ovations at two separate concerts
with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and have had multiple
“sold out” shows at The Tralf Music Hall – don’t miss this show!
Blanche Dubois in the Ruins: Part of Performance at the Ruins join Torn Space Theater as Blanche Dubois, the tarnished Southern
belle from Williams’ “A Streetcar Named Desire,” accompanies
guests through the Ruins at Canalside. In the process audiences
will gain access into the deteriorating psyche of one of the most
arresting characters in American drama. Groups of 10-15 people
will accompany “Blanche” through The Ruins as she performs
selected monologues from the play. The Historic Ruins provide
an appropriate visual motif for the faded past Blanche attempts to
recreate and a fascinating environment for the video projections
which will accompany the performance. The running time for each
“performance” is approximately fifteen (15) minutes so that between
7pm and 8:30pm, six performances will take place.
Boppin’ at the Ruins with The Buffalo Bop Sextet: Part of the
Music at the Ruins Concert Series – there’s no hotter, more exciting
jazz ensemble in WNY – featuring internationally known sax player
Bobby Militello, George Caldwell, lead pianist for the Ellington and
the Basie Bands, Lou Marino, veteran bop drum maestro, Sabu
Adeola, formerly sideman for Amad Jamal with Richie Merlo,
trumpet and Phil DiRe, trumpet. The group will play two sets of
extraordinary jazz music, creating an evening at The Ruins that
few will forget.

Bread and Onions: The Life and Times of Buffalo’s Italian
Waterfront Community – part of Performance at the Ruins - this
original play written by Joe Giambra is set in the Italian Waterfront
community in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Some of it takes place in
“The Hooks” and around what used to be known as Canal Street
or Dante Place. Some of it takes place on the lower West Side, just
north of the Canal terminus. All of it deals with the men, women
and children who called this area home for so many years. The
play evokes real places: the streets, the playgrounds and the
sidewalks where so many Italian-Americans in Buffalo have their
roots. It is sad and poignant, colorful, touching and amusing.
Infused with random musical references, this play is a must see
for anybody who cares about the history of the people of Buffalo’s
Italian-American community.
Buffalo Ballroom Theater: Part of Performance at the Ruins
- join Buffalo Ballroom Theater for a variety of Ballroom, Latin
and theatrical dance pieces such as: Argentine Tango, Waltz, Jive,
ChaCha and Salsa. Performers will be comprised of eight (8)
professional company members, as well as the youth student
company. In addition to providing exciting dance demonstrations,
the company will engage the audience in free dance classes from
a broad spectrum of style. Buffalo Ballroom Theater is a unique
dance company that presents ballroom and Latin dance as
a performance art, combining it with a mix of Ballet, Jazz and
Modern Dance.
Buffalo & Beyond Black History: Carmen Swans aka “Eboni
Ancesta” performs this one woman show showcasing African
American history and the role it played in shaping American
history. Appearing in period clothing and presenting actual
narratives of great heroes such as Harriet Ross Tubman Davis,
Sojourna Truth, Mary Reynolds and O. Equino along with Ole
Gospel songs and information on the Historic Michigan Street
Baptist Church. The performance also mixes in nuggets of
pertinent information for children and adults of all ages.
Buffalo Creek Native Festival: This two-day festival produced by
the Seneca Nation of Indians, is a family-oriented celebration
focusing on an important but often overlooked portion of Buffalo’s
cultural history, that of the Seneca and other Haudenosaunee
people who inhabited the Buffalo Creek Reservation prior to the
1840s. This free event provides an authentic, hands-on experience
for visitors to become immersed in the unique cultural heritage
and traditions that Native people still practice today. Enjoy craft
demonstrations, historical re-enactments, theatrical storytelling,
dance demonstrations, traditional food and games.
Buffalo Irish Festival: This festival celebrates its thirty-first year
with the historic 2012 move to Canalside. Festivities include three
stages of continuous Irish entertainment – music, dance and
theatrical performances from the US, Canada and Ireland. Enjoy
25-30 national touring shops of exclusively Irish goods and crafts,
traditional Irish food and drink, book signings and storytelling. As
the Buffalo Irish Festival moves to Canalside we celebrate the role
of the Irish in the building of the Erie Canal and the prominent
role the Irish community in the building of our great city, Buffalo –
Queen City of the Great Lakes. This is a ticketed event – for ticket
and Festival information visit www.buffaloirish.com.
Buffalo Harbor Oktoberfest at Canalside: Join the German
American Musicians Association for this celebration of all things
German. This festival promotes the traditional music and cultures
of German speaking lands, while celebrating the concepts of
Gemotlichkeit – “A love of being in the right place, at the right
time, with the right people, doing the right things!” Music will be
provided by the 30-piece German American Musicians – Buffalo’s
BIG German Band along with Bavarian dancers. Authentic German
gift shopping, food and German and domestic beers. This is a
ticketed event for ticket and Festival information call 716-864-2965.

Architecture: Join visionary artist Franklin LaVoie for a 90-minute

Ellicott’s Radial Street Grid to the brilliance of our Frederick Law
Olmsted designed integrated park system. Techniques include
astrology, astronomy and giant landscape figures hidden in
plain sight, which correlate with figures on the celestial sphere.
Franklin’s presentation has been evolving for twenty years. It is
rooted in research and investigation – the program illuminates
Buffalo Niagara in the best light possible – high art of an ancient
noble tradition.

Buffalo’s Canal District. The Canal Street String Band regales with
good time music – sea shanties, fiddle tunes, cowboy songs, canal
ditties, western swing, honky tonk and more – an entertaining array
of music!

Canalside Comedy with Eclectic Improv: Part of Performance at
the Ruins - Canalside Comedy is a live, improvisational experience

songs, and characters basing the entire content of the performance
on audience suggestions.
Canalside Comes to Life with MusicalFare Theatre: Join actors
from MusicalFare Theatre as they tell the story of the building of
the Erie Canal – hear from DeWitt Clinton and an Irish immigrant
working as a mule handler driving barges down the Canal as they
share their stories. The Erie Canal was an engineering marvel – 40
