Film Documentary: “Ancient Cities of Rome”
Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 pm
Admission $10 - at the Italian Center, Carmichael
The Roman Empire was the largest and most enduring of the classical world. In a time of frequent invasions and competition among warring tribes, the ancient cities of the Roman Empire stood as pillars of
strength, beauty and sophistication. Across the empire, these cities provided ground for a flourish of
cultural activity among the diverse civilizations brought together under Roman law.
Discover why the Romans endured over other preceding cultures, such as the Greeks and Etruscans,
how the Roman architecture and art was influenced by these preceding societies, and what features of
our own modern cities we owe to the ingenuity of the Romans! REFRESHMENTS INCLUDED
Capito! Italians and the Development of Martinez”
Lecture by Author Kristin Hendersen
Sunday, October 25 at 2:00 pm
Admission $10 - at the Italian Center, Carmichael
Italians, mainly Sicilians, played an important role in the development of the east
bay town of Martinez, and Kristin Henderson noticed this rich history could easily
slip away. In 2009 local political forces, for reasons of financing a HUD complex,
falsely asserted that the old Italian neighborhood had no historic value. After five
years of research and writing, CAPITO!: Italians and the Development of Martinez
was published to support having the Italian neighborhood listed in the National
Register of Historic Places. The settlement of Martinez by Italian fishermen from
Italy is an important part of the California Italian experience. From an immigrant
past to a vibrant and rich community, the Italian American experience in this
small San Francisco Bay town deserves to be preserved. Martinez was also the
birthplace of Joe DiMaggio, the son of a Sicilian immigrant fisherman. The city is
currently working on a statue of their local hero.
Take a timeless journey with us through the old Little Italy via its current architecture and photographs and memories of the past as Kristin shares a visual presentation that truly captures the topography and history so richly inuenced by
Italian immigrants, their memories, photographs and love of their upbringing in and around the shorelines of Downtown
Martinez. REFRESHMENTS INCLUDED
Meet the Author: Diane Hales
“Mona Lisa, A Life Discovered”
Sunday, November 8 at 2:00 pm
Admission $10 - at the Italian Center, Carmichael
No face is more famous; no work of art, more acclaimed. But who was the Florentine woman who rose to
extraordinary fame as Leonardo da Vinci’s model? How did she live? What became of her? And why does her
smile enchant us still? Intrigued by recent research confirming the identity of Mona (Madame) Lisa Gherardini
del Giocondo, best-selling author Dianne Hales devoted years to a personal quest for the flesh-and-blood
woman in the world’s most praised and parodied painting. The result is MONA LISA: A Life Discovered, acclaimed as “cultural history that reads like a detective novel.” This blend of biography, history and memoir was
chosen as a Best Book of 2014 by amazon.com as well as a top pick of CNN, the BBC, USA TODAY and other
major news outlets.
Prize wining author Diane Hales returns to the Italian Center with her new book about the life of Mona Lisa.
Diane has been honored by the Italian government for her popular biography of the Italian language, La
Bella Lingua, previously presented at the Italian Center. Her books will be available for signing and purchase.

COLUMBUS DAY OLIVE OIL CELEBRATION
Sunday, October 11 • 1:30pm
(Presentation at 2:15)
Admission $25 - at the Italian Center, Carmichael
Join your friends and family at the Italian Center on Columbus Day
weekend to celebrate Italian heritage and culture!
Olive oil, always part of the Italian diet, is today one of the essential parts of any
healthy diet. The health benefits of extra virgin olive oil are one of the few things
nutritionists agree on! Along with its delicious taste, olive oil has been found to
be effective against cancer, heart diseases, diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis,
osteoporosis and brain disease. With benefits like these, it’s easy to see why olive
oil is often called a “SUPER FOOD”.
This event invites you to taste several award winning olive oils and olive oil
products from our special selection of local California growers. Our special guest,
Jim Mayer of Frate Sole in Woodland, explains how a small family operation can
consistently make award-winning olive oils in today’s market, while exercising
conservation practices that have become increasingly important in the Central
Valley. While you enjoy the presentation, you’ll also taste Frate’s Sole’s Tuscan
blend, which won “Best of Show” at the Yolo County Fair this year, and Frate Sole’s
Coratina varietal oil, the dominant variety in the southern Italian region of Puglia.
during the presentation.
Frate Sole and a special selection of other olive oil vendors will be on site for you to visit, taste and purchase their products,
such as Sciabica Olive Oil, another small family operation (from the Central Valley) consistently producing award-winning olive
oils, Royal Olive (olive oil soaps and products), Tehama Blend Olive Oil and Sal Manna, whose book “Olives in California’s Gold
Country,” featuring a collection of rare vintage images and history from the Gold Rush to present, will be available for purchase.
just to name a few of the wonderful vendors that will be on hand.
Mark your calendar today and be a part of this special celebration of olive oil and Italian heritage! Reservations may be made
