visit us on the web at www.AAA.com e e e e July/August 2010 Experience the passion of Gettysburg Travel with AAA North Jersey to Gettysburg, PA and spend Veteran's Day with us. Enjoy this special holiday to commemorate the hard-won freedoms we enjoy as a nation today! On Day 1, November 10th, upon arrival in Gettysburg we will have lunch on our own at area eateries. After lunch, we’ll explore the Gettysburg Nation Military Park Museum & Visitor Center, including viewing of the "Cyclorama," a 400 ft. painting in the form of an ever changing film of the battles at Gettysburg. We will view “The Film” narrated by Morgan Freeman, which introduces you to the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg–placing those monumental events into the larger context of American history and helping you understand that what happened in the past is very relevant in the present day. Then we’ll enjoy free time in the Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War, featuring 12 exhibit galleries featuring artifacts, interactive exhibits and hands-on-displays that will engage visitors of all ages with content that places the Battle of Gettysburg into the larger context of American history, helping visitors understand its magnitude and relevance. Multiple film experiences throughout the museum tell the story of the causes of the Civil War. Following is a visit to the nearby Eisenhower Farm. We will check in to the Eisenhower Inn and later enjoy dinner at the historic 1776 Dobbin House Tavern. Four score and seven years before the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, in 1776, Reverend Alexander Dobbin built a house to begin a new life in America for himself and his family. Today his home, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a colonial restaurant where candlelit elegance, superior food in abundance, and gracious service bring back the sights, sounds and tastes of two centuries ago. We’ll dine in Gettysburg's oldest, most historic home....beautifully and authentically restored. On Day 2, November 11th, we'll enjoy breakfast at our hotel, followed by a step-on guided tour of Gettysburg National Military Park, discovering Gettysburg and the journey through hallowed ground. We will enjoy free time with lunch on our own and a visit to Cabela's Outfitters in Hamburg, PA - a unique shopping experience on our way home. Gettysburg will provide you with a vacation experience that is filled with as much passion and inspiration as it is with fun and relaxation. Relive the history, experience the passion in Gettysburg, where our nation was saved. See our ad on page 17. Extended warranties protect against costly repairs "I t was one of the most pleasant experiences I've ever had…almost incredible in this day and age to meet a salesperson who actually cared about my needs more than making a sale," stated a AAA North Jersey member who recently joined the AAA MemberCare Extended Warranty Family to protect her vehicle. Not only did her MemberCare counselor tailor a plan specifically to meet her individual driving habits, but he also provided her with a plan that was hundreds of dollars less than the manufacturer's comparable plan! The MemberCare Family of Extended Warranties has been protecting members against costly repair bills for years. And, as vehicles become more and more hi-tech those repair bills become more and more expensive! Only a MemberCare plan will offer you the luxury of enjoying all those new hi-tech options without the worry of paying for that "computer chip failure" or the potential $150 per hour labor rate your mechanic will charge you to diagnose and repair your vehicle. Imagine worry free motoring for up to 7 years or 100,000 miles! Call a MemberCare counselor today at 800-257-1AAA (1222) who will offer you gracious customer service, reflective of times gone by. They'll gladly work with you to tailor a plan that best meets your needs and will potentially save you thousands. Counselors are available Monday thru Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 800-257-1AAA (1222). As long as your vehicle is less than 17 years old and has less than 150,000 miles there's a MemberCare plan for you! Call today at 800-2571AAA (1222) to enjoy worry free motoring. Staten Island Yankees Thwack! It's going, going gone! That's the traditional sound of summer. And the best place to see the American pastime played as it should be played is at a minor league game. There, the hopes and dreams of future major leaguers are spread out on a carpet of lush green grass, a field of dreams. Every pitch counts for these young hopefuls, as the pitchers look to put one by the hitter, and the batters keep an eye on the outfield wall. On Sunday, July 11, Air Brook will take AAA North Jersey members to spend an afternoon with the Staten Island Yankees as they play the Batavia farm team of the St. Louis Cardinals. This trip will include a free limited edition Staten Island Yankees cap, a free program, and a complimentary meal coupon for future use at Wendy's. Children under 12 can even run the bases after the game! Air Brook brings this exciting, funfilled package to AAA North Jersey members on Sunday, July 11 for only $29.95 per person including transportation aboard one of Air Brook's luxury motor coaches. These motor coaches will depart from Woodcliff Lake at 1:45 p.m. and from Ridgewood at 2 p.m. Balloon Festival In response to the many requests of AAA North Jersey members, Air Brook again this year offers the special magic of hot air ballooning at the New Jersey Festival of Ballooning. This is the largest summertime hot air ballooning and music festival in the United States, attracting more than 175,000 spectators each year. AAA North Jersey members will be filled with awe and wonder at the mass ascension of more than 125 bright colorful hot air balloons in the sky at dusk, with special shapes including the Easter Bunny and Darth Vader. There will be headliner concerts, great food, one-of-a-kind arts and crafts, aerial acrobatic groups, magic shows, children's interactive exhibits, amusement rides, dog shows, comedy, jugglers, musical performances and great food vendors. Air Brook's luxury coaches will leave from the Woodcliff Lake at 9:15 a.m. and from the Ridgewood Park 'n' Ride at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday July 25, and return from the festival at 8 p.m. Tickets for this event, which includes both admission and transportation to the event, are $44.95 for adults and $34.95 for children. Wind Gap Bluegrass Festival Bluegrass is part of America's roots, a mixture of Irish/Scottish blues, traditional music, gospel and country. It is our own kind of sound - in a word, America. It is music born out of the vibrant old time southern fiddle bands, as well as the lonesome moans of backwoods mountain blues. Now AAA North Jersey members can enjoy a wonderful day of real, genuine bluegrass music at the 22nd Annual AFBA Bluegrass Festival, set in spectacularly scenic Mountain View Park in Wind Gap in the Pocono Mountains. Members will mingle with friendly crowds, with a unique camaraderie that exists among true bluegrass fans. The quality of the showcased music is superb. Wind Gap has become a destination for bluegrass lovers, rich in the Appalachian heritage of the genre and hosting three bluegrass festivals a year, attended by 10,000 fans. Band after band of the best known bluegrass artists perform non-stop, evoking the fun and spirit of a different time in America. Many attendees also play bluegrass music. As a result, there is a "jam tent" for impromptu groups to play in. There is also a "Bluegrass Academy" for young people with an interest in bluegrass music. So bring your guitar, banjo or fiddle, and join in. You can also enjoy a broad range of food, snacks, ice cream and hot dogs. You will also find one-of-a-kind country arts and crafts, including unique hand made jewelry designs. In true bluegrass tradition, AAA members should bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. There are café picnic tables overlooking the stage as well. The single ticket price for entry to the festival is $35. However, on Sunday August 8, Air Brook offers AAA North Jersey member transportation to the festival in our luxury motor coaches and admission for only $39.95. Coaches will leave at 9:30 a.m. from Woodcliff Lake and at 9:45 a.m. from Ridgewood. San Gennaro Festival Zeppole's! Cannoli's! Air Brook is delighted to take AAA North Jersey members to the 83rd Annual Feast of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples, the longest-running, biggest and most revered outdoor festival in the United States. Fun for the entire family, the Feast of San Gennaro offers a taste of old Italy in the lower Manhattan neighborhood of Little Italy, which served as the first home in America for hundreds of thousands of Italian immigrants who came here more than a hundred years ago to give their future generations a better life. The feast keeps alive the spirit and faith of these early Italian immigrants, attracting more than one million people a year. The feast is a celebration of Italian-American culture and heritage, known the world over for its festive atmosphere, featuring religious processions and colorful parades, free musical entertainment including Italian folk songs, rock bands and pop singers, arcade games and rides for the children, and, as the great attraction for most visitors, a wide variety of Italian food del- icacies, eaten from pushcarts just like your grand parents did, or in charming restaurants and cafes. What a way to end the summer! On Saturday, September 25, Air Brook will take members to see the world-famous Grand Procession on Mulberry Street, a colorful parade with Honorary Grand Marshals, floats, marching bands, musical entertainers and the Statue of San Gennaro. Our coaches will depart from Woodcliff Lake at 9:45 a.m. and from Ridgewood at 10 a.m. They will leave the festival at 6 p.m. The cost is only $19.95 per person. 5 cool websites for kids and teens Online safety for parents and The Internet can be a great teen3. girls resource-if you know where to look. There are a number of excellent (and safe) sites that can give your kids a leg up on learning. With younger children, always be sure to work with them as they explore online. Here are some of our favorites: 1. For young children www.clickmagkids.com Recommended by the American Library Association, this is a great site for young children. The site is brought to you by Click Magazine, a magazine targeted at "Opening windows for young minds." It has lots of interactive components, including matching games, "identify the animal" quizzes, sequence puzzles, exploration games, what's that sound, coloring printouts and much more. 2. Math for all ages www.coolmath4kids.com This site is a bit trickier to navigate for younger kids, so be sure to be on hand to help. There are some great sections to this site; in addition to math help for children entering kindergarten, you'll find high school (and above) levels of fun support such as trigonometry tips and a math dictionary. Quick games teach math fundamentals. www.letmeknow.girlscouts.org Let Me Know (LMK) was created by the Girl Scouts of the USA and Windows to provide parents with tips, tools and resources to help keep their families safer online. Using insight from teen girls, you'll learn about current issues that teens face online, and how to utilize technology in a safe way. 4. Geography and more www.kids.nationalgeographic.com Super kid-friendly and colorfully designed, the site is brimming with great information from geography to animals, the solar system and more, all presented in the form of games and interactive content. This robust site is great for all ages. 5. For middle school and early teens (plus parents) www.scholastic.com/kids/stacks Brought to you by the Scholastic learning folks, this site has a number of great sections, including book recommendations, puzzles, educational video games, fun writing exercises and even a "Community Page." The Community Page is designed to be age-appropriate for children. There are also helpful sections with tips and information for parents, teachers, librarians and administrators. 3 Member Services Think safety first Helmets You should wear a helmet on every bike ride, no matter how short or how close to home. Even though this age group represents less than seven percent of the U.S. population, these drivers are involved in more than 14 percent of all fatal crashes. Not every crash is deadly, of course. But they are costly. The annual economic impact of car crashes involving teens adds up to billions. As a parent, there are some protections you can put in place. You can be a good role model, you can insist on effective driver education, and you can be a source of information to other parents. They share your concerns. In fact, a study commissioned by the Chrysler Group found that six out of 10 parents of teens ranked driving safety as a top concern - over suicide, pregnancy and substance abuse. Some families feel their teens are the exceptions to the statistics. Here are five common preconceptions you might have, or you may be able to help other parents re-examine. I have a daughter - girls are naturally cautious drivers. Girls do drink and drive. They do speed. They do drive aggressively. They also smoke while driving and skip the safety belts. Between 1992 and 2002, the fatality rate for female drivers age 16 - 20 rose a whopping 42 percent. My child always wears a safety belt. Teenagers generally are less likely to use safety belts than adults and when passengers are other teens, buckling up decreases. In 2003, 63 percent of 16- to 20-year-old passenger vehicle occupants were unrestrained in fatal crashes. I won't let my teen drive with passengers in the car -- just younger brothers and sisters. Teen passengers are a major distraction, but any passenger can shift an inexperienced driver's attention from the road. In fact, the odds of a crash rise with the addition of every passenger. In crashes involving teen drivers, nearly two of every three people killed are people other than the teen driver - including siblings. It's safer to rely on teens as chauffeurs only after they have been driving at least a year. My son is hardworking and responsible. He's a good student with an after-school job. I don't have to worry. Driving drowsy can impair a driver as much as driving under the influence. On average, teens need about nine hours of sleep but typically sleep just six hours a night. A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that people who sleep six to seven hours a night are twice as likely to be involved in such a crash as those sleeping 8 hours or more, while people sleeping less than 5 hours increased their risk four to five times. We eliminated distractions because our teen is not allowed to use a cell phone in the car. Surprisingly, cell phone use is not the top distraction. According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more common distractions involve adjusting the radio, conversations with passengers, eating, drinking and reaching for items in the vehicle. Distractions are unavoidable while driving. Work with your teen to manage them. By William J. Purpura I looked intently at Capt. Mike Fleming looking intently right back at me, wondering why he wasn’t responding to my question. I had traveled to one of the wildest places on earth to hunt down the answer to what I had thought was a simple inquiry. The captain’s long silence, however, was putting the mission of my journey in jeopardy. He looked to be in a faraway place when he finally knotted up his face, looked at me square on with ink-black eyes and said quite flatly, “Give me three days to show you.” My question: What makes Cruise West a standout among the many cruise lines that rip through the summer waters of Alaska? Fleming’s hesitation soon became understandable as we maneuvered our way through Alaska’s famed Inside Passage during our weeklong voyage aboard the 51-cabin Spirit of Endeavour. The funny thing is, Fleming didn’t need three days to prove his point. He made me a believer on the evening of day one when he and his crew maneuvered the agile ship among a pod of orcas. All hands were on deck to embrace this moment, to feel like a part of this killer-whale clan. To a Different Drummer The vast majority of Alaska’s cruisers come by way of one of the many 12 mega-luxury liners that steam up and down the Inside Passage from late May through the end of September. And while the captains of these vessels keep busy making speed, time and distance calculations as they cruise from port to port, Cruise West’s captains take a markedly different approach. It almost appears they forgo such mathematical calculations to bring the line’s passengers face-to-face with a view of Alaska they won’t ever forget. The larger ships steam from port to port to port because that’s what they were designed and built to do. Cruise West’s relatively tiny and maneuverable ships, on the other hand, are designed and built to slip easily into pods of humpback whales and into backwater bays where mighty grizzlies forage out of sight of most Alaska visitors. The luxury liners move with purpose, while smaller ships explore the world exactly the way a 5-year-old boy would. It feels as if there is no rhythm or rhyme to the journey–just pure exploration and interaction. Explained Fleming: “I think that when they say, ‘Up close, casual and personal’ the motto for the company–it really rings true. We just go where the big ships just can’t go.” Put another way, the mega-liners offer their own brand of shipboard luxury experience. But Alaska, in my mind, deserves so much more. When it comes to exploring the Last Frontier, I don’t want a merry-goround ride. I want to strap myself into a roller coaster. That is what Cruise West offers and why I found it to be so much to my liking. An Itinerary Unto Itself Fleming, for example, “swam” his ship alongside hunting humpback whales to let us feel their spray as they moved back and forth across our bow, then he bullied his way through ice packs to get us seemingly close enough to touch the Sawyer and South Sawyer glaciers. He also silently glided the Spirit of Endeavour to observe a mother griz- zly and her rambunctious young cubs as they began their summer-seasonlong food frenzy in anticipation of another cold, hard winter. At one point, we circled a glacialblue iceberg so that every one of the ship’s 100 or so guests could get an award-winning photograph. As a larger ship went by in the background, I knew for sure my recollections of Alaska would be far different from its passengers. If we’re not looking at an attraction,” said Fleming, “we are running at full speed. If we didn’t have that mentality or flexibility, maybe we wouldn’t have had the opportunity to spend time with the eagles, sea lions and that large pod of whales. So instead of looking at it as a scheduled run, we are truly exploring.” You’re getting the real thing. That’s what I’m most proud about. It’s just an accurate picture of what Alaska is about. A Cruise West experience in Alaska doesn’t come cheap, a fact that Fleming, an Alaska native, doesn’t take for granted. “I understand that people spend a lot of money to come on these cruises, he said. They save a lifetime for it. I look at this job as being able to ful- fill people’s dreams. I want to make it the trip of a lifetime because it really is.” And that’s no exaggeration. Points to Ponder Cruisers should pack to dress in layers and bring rain gear, no matter what season. For those who don’t own a long camera lens, rent one. And no matter what the onboard activity, cruisers should carry a camera at all times. Kodak moments appear and disappear in an instant. For chefs who want to put together a meal their guests will never forget, do it the way Taku Glacier Lodge in Juneau does: Scrounge up some king salmon caught fresh from the Taku River and baste it in white wine, brown sugar, lemon juice and butter, then grill it over a fire of alderwood. Serve it with baked beans, reindeer sausage, baked apples and homemade biscuits in a spectacular setting and you can’t go wrong. Oh, and by the way, make sure every cold drink is chilled by crystal-clear chunks of glacial ice. For anglers who make a catch: Bless your fish and clean it as its head points upstream. Native Alaskans believe doing so enables the fish’s soul to continue upstream to spawn again. And that, to me, is the true spirit of Alaska. Travel With Someone You Trust®. www.AAA.com 13 Worldwide Travel 14 worldwide Travel Perks beyond the parks The other half of the Walt Disney World Resort by Stephen M. Wheeler We've abandoned the idea of the four-day/four-park Disney vacation. True, we used to rise early, race through the crowds to gather Fast Passes, strategically plan our entire day to be able to ride every ride and, after four days of Disney thrills, return home completely exhausted. This was no way to vacation. But several years ago, when visiting friends in Orlando, our definition of visiting Disney was forever changed when those friends suggested we go to Disney for lunch. Lunch? I thought. It costs enough just to get into Disney. How can we afford to go just for lunch? Get a bird’s-eye view of Walt Disney World Resort. Of course, we never entered the parks. As locals, my friends had stumbled on a great secret: the Imagineers of Disney have crafted an entire world surrounding the parks. Every hotel and restaurant is themed with the same touches of Disney magic that make the parks so memorable. And so we munched on burgers and fries and enormous ice cream sundaes at Beaches & Cream, a small 1950s soda shop nestled between the Beach Club and Yacht Club resorts. Now when we stay at Disney we try to budget as much time away from the parks as we do within them. We haven't stayed at every Disney hotel (yet), but we have encountered a few magical perks worth sharing. For example, the best swimming pool (short of Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon) is undoubtedly Stormalong Bay at the Beach Club and Yacht Club resorts. With a white sand bottom, lifeguards at every turn, a lazy river, and one of the largest water slides of all the hotel pools, Stormalong Bay worthily demands a full day (or two) of your vacation time. While you can hop between most Disney hotel pools, Stormalong Bay is only for guests of the Beach Club and Yacht Club. Just a short boat ride across Crescent Lake is Disney's Boardwalk Resort. Modeled after 1940s Atlantic City, the Boardwalk is a quarter mile of sidewalk fun. A guest favorite is to sit on park benches or rocking chairs along the Boardwalk and watch the evening fireworks from nearby Epcot park. Ever consider "roughing it"? Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort is themed after the early frontier. For a song and dance extravaganza, see the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review; or join Chip and Dale for a campfire (with s'mores) and movie under the stars. Never consider roughing it? Opt for the iconic Wilderness Lodge, inspired by National Park lodges of the Northwest. Behind the Lodge is Fire Rock Geyser (think Old Faithful), which dutifully gushes skyward every hour. During the evenings from both Fort Wilderness and the Wilderness Lodge, you can take in the floating Electrical Water Pageant on Bay Lake. Old Key West, Saratoga Springs and Port Orleans resorts are just a short boat ride away from Downtown Disney. Primarily a shopping, dining and entertainment district, numerous activities abound. DisneyQuest is a five-story mega arcade, but our kids always enjoy creating sculptures outside the LEGO Imagination Center (conveniently located near the Ghirardelli Chocolate Shop). Can't get it all in? Try a bird's eye view from the tethered hot air balloon Characters In Flight. There are still five or six Disney resorts left on our list to explore. On the next trip, we'll definitely make sure to spend a day or two taking in the imagination and magic of the other half of the Walt Disney World Resort. an exclusive private evening featuring Savannah's Madeira traditions, and visits to plantations, gardens, a Civil War fort, and an island tycoon retreat. The warm hospitality of the locals and the astonishing beauty of the lush Emerald Isle draw one in from the moment you step on its soil. It is the land of my ancestors, a country of castles, mountain heather, stirring literature scholars and saints. We journey north toward Galway. The drive takes us past stonewalllined roads and farms, two of the signature sites of the typical Irish countryside. The beautiful fieldstone fences are a testament to the residents' resourceful nature. Stoneladen fields were cleared by hand to make way for farms and pastures. The heavy stones were then carefully stacked, creating the miles of picturesque stone fences. Galway lies at the mouth of the Corrib River. Once a medieval center of narrow stone streets, Galway is now a lively city with cathedrals, uni- 16 versities, shopping districts and fine dining. One of the most popular tourist destinations is the Galway Irish Crystal Centre. Here, you can watch artisans cutting glass with skilled precision. Years of rigorous training are required to create worldrenowned stemware. Although Waterford Crystal is better known, Galway Crystal has its own distinct charm and beauty. After a visit to the showroom and gift shop, most visitors are unable to resist bringing home the hand-cut crystal treasures. Our travels take us from manmade beauty to the mythical splendor of the Irish landscape, which has inspired countless poets, musicians and artists over the centuries, and continues to captivate visitors year after year. Along the coastline, you'll discover boulders as large as houses and stone cliffs hundreds of feet high. The most famous of these are the Cliffs of Moher, about an hour south of Galway, which plummet 700 hundred feet into the raging Atlantic below. The cliffs extend for some five miles and form one of the grandest and most breathtaking coastlines in Europe. The ocean air fuels the appetite. Fresh salmon, mussels, Atlantic lobster, and oysters (of course) are common fare at restaurants and pubs up and down the coast. People from all over the world descend upon Galway to sample the world-famous oysters of Galway Bay and the legendary craic (fun) of the West of Ireland. The west also is the land of castles. There are more than 900 castles in the counties of Clare, Limerick and Galway. Some have been turned into luxury hotels; others sit quietly in ruin along the roadside. Bunratty, near Shannon Airport, is one of the most famous castles in Ireland. Built in 1425 by the MacNamara Clan, the history of Bunratty stretches over 500 years of turbulence. The stone fortress was in shambles until it was bought in 1954. This walk through time is a must for all castle lovers. Bunratty houses one of the finest collections of medieval furniture in the country. On the castle grounds, Bunratty Folk Park re-creates 19th-century Ireland. This historical village includes a riverdriven flourmill, a hardware store, blacksmith's forge, printer's workshop and many elaborate thatched farmhouses. A few miles west of Galway is Connemara, a wild and beautiful region of patient mountains, expansive lakes, turbulent rivers and rushing streams. One of the three Gaelicspeaking areas in Ireland, Connemara has many summer schools where students come to improve their Irish language skills. In the heart of Connemara rests Kylemore Abbey. This neo-Gothic castle was built in 1860 of Dalkey granite. Mitchell Henry and his wife Margaret entertained on a grand scale until her death in 1874. The lavish mansion now houses a community of Irish Benedictine nuns and one of the most prestigious girls' schools in Europe. Hovering on what feels like the edge of the world, Ireland's Atlantic coastline is studded with the fabled Aran Islands of Inis Mor, Inis Meain and Inis Oirr. Accessible by ferry, the islands are ideal for day trips. Gaelic is the everyday language of the islanders, and much of Ireland's folklore and culture are enshrined in their songs and stories. Aran is known for its hand-knit sweaters, stone-lined fields, horses and buggies, and four Celtic forts that sit defiantly on towering cliff tops. Nearby Galway is County Mayo, most notable for Croagh Patrick, a perfectly cone-shaped mountain. Legend has it that St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, chased all the snakes away as he was converting the country to Christianity. Another holy site is the Knock Shrine, where local residents reportedly saw a vision of the Virgin Mary in 1879. Today, the mountain and Knock Shrine are important pilgrimage destinations. One Sunday every summer, thousands of people flock to the area to climb the mountain. As you travel through Ireland, your choice of accommodations are as varied as the country itself. Fancy staying in a haunted lighthouse? How about a medieval castle or a quaint bed and breakfast where you're treated to piping hot tea and a traditional Irish breakfast? Top-of-the-line luxury accommodations are also plentiful throughout the countryside and in the larger cities. We continued on toward Dublin, which James Joyce, Oscar Wilde and William Butler Yeats called home. Along the way, we stopped at a local pub for lunch. The Irish pub is a center for music, mesmerizing meals and great conversation. Irish pubs are also the source for the national drink, Guinness, the world's most celebrated pint. The brew house in Dublin produces two million pints a day. And there is no shortage of warm, friendly establishments happy to serve a glass of "the dark stuff" and toast your health. The toasts are as Irish as the beer. "May the roof above us never fall in and the friends beneath it never fall out." The city of Dublin combines OldWorld charm and cosmopolitan chic, high-tech commerce and unpretentious magnetism. Visitors will have no challenges finding affordable, guided or private tours to learn its fascinating history. More than a thousand years ago, Viking invaders founded Dublin. Later, the Normans enlarged and strengthened the city. In 1191, they started work on St. Patrick's Cathedral, whose most famous dean was Jonathan Swift. Dublin's first university was founded in 1320 and lasted until 1539, when it was abolished due to lack of funds. Trinity College replaced it in 1592. The university houses some of the country's most precious historic treasures, including the seventh-century Book of Kells, a spectacular group of brilliantly colored manuscripts depicting the four gospels. In the same library, visitors can view handwritten works that were created prior to the invention of the Gutenberg press. Like many European cities, summertime is an especially pleasant time, when cafes set up sidewalk tables and the warm, gentle sun guides your path. But any time of the year, you'll find the warmth of the Irish people most charming. Walk in the footsteps of our nation's founding fathers along Boston's Freedom Trail. Explore a Providence site interpreting the life of Roger Williams, who created a community based on the principle of religious freedom. Stroll through Mystic's re-created 19th-century coastal village and witness the seafaring traditions of days past. Finally, relish Gilded Age remnants as you tour Newport's summer "cottages," grand palaces for society's elite. Fast Facts: 2 legs - 216 Miles Leg 1: From Boston, take I-93 s. to I-95, I-95 s. to Mystic (99 mi./approximately 1hr., 40 min.) Leg 2: From Mystic, take US 1 e. to SR 138, SR 138 e. to SR 114, SR 114 n. to SR 24, SR 24 n. to I-93 and I-93 n. to Boston (117 mi./approximately 2 hrs., 30 min.) LEG 1: BOSTON, MASS., TO MYSTIC, CONN. - 99 MILES Boston is a successful melding of the old and the new, where high-tech innovators and financial wheelers and dealers prosper amid historic landmarks that figured prominently in America's fight for independence. You can't help but be charmed by this sophisticated city's twisting hodgepodge of streets, unless you happen to be driving. A word of advice: don't. Boston is eminently walkable, yet a vehicular nightmare to the uninitiated. So, park the car until you're ready to travel to the next destination on the drive tour. In a city that has too many AAA GEM attractions to explore during a brief visit, you can actually see a good deal of them by walking along the Freedom Trail. A red line on the sidewalk leads the way past the most important Revolutionary sights. If you take AAA's Freedom Trail Walking Tour (see Boston Sightseeing in the online and printed TourBook guide), you will eventually come upon several GEM attractions assuming you begin at the visitor information center in Boston Common. As the trail leads north on Washington Street, you'll see the 1713 Old State House, where Massachusetts inaugurated John Hancock as its first governor. Look up at the balcony and try to imagine the Declaration of Independence being read to Boston's citizens from this perch in July 1776. A cobblestone circle at the building's east front marks the spot where the Boston Massacre occurred. Faneuil Hall, the tour's next stop, was site of the passionate rhetoric and tumultuous town meetings protesting England's control of the Colonies. At the adjacent Quincy Market, you can grab a bite or do some souvenir shopping. Follow the trail across the Charlestown Bridge to visit the USS Constitution at Pier 1. British cannonballs boomeranged off the 1797 frigate's oak hull during the War of 1812, earning it the nickname "Old Ironsides." Bunker Hill Monument, which happens to be the trail's last stop, commemorates a crucial early battle of the Revolution. If you're not too tired, climb the 294 steps to the granite obelisk's top–the view is worth it. To return to the downtown area, cross back over the Charlestown Bridge and catch the "T," Boston's rapid-transit system. From Boston, drive south on I-93 and I-95 to arrive in Providence, Rhode Island's capital. Banished from Massachusetts after quarreling with Puritans over his liberal theologies, English clergyman Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636. Several town landmarks bear Williams' name, demonstrating the high esteem residents have for him and for the principle of religious freedom he so passionately espoused. To learn more about the theologian's life, visit Roger Williams National Memorial, site of the original settlement where all could worship freely without fear of persecution.Williams' final resting place is at Prospect Terrace, which includes a statue of him gazing down at Providence below and blessing it with an outstretched arm–your reward for climbing the small park's hill will be a sweeping skyline view. The petite city also happens to be Rhode Island's capital. In addition to a vivid historical legacy, Providence also has fashionable neighborhoods, a bustling restaurant scene with fresh seafood galore and several well-respected institutes of higher learning. The stylish College Hill area is home to Brown University, a member of the Ivy League and just a stone's throw away from the Museum of Art-Rhode Island School of Design, a AAA GEM attraction. This is site of one of the nation's top design schools as well as a collection of ancient and modern art with some 80,000 items. From the museum, walk south along Benefit Street, locally known as the "Mile of History." Grand old Colonial homes vie Faneuil Hall Marketplace for attention with carefully restored and blissfully colorful Victorian structures. Federal, Italianate, Greek Revival-architecture buffs will gape at the styles represented on this lofty incline overlooking the city. Historical plaques mark taverns, churches, homes and shops along this row bordered by rustic brick sidewalks and hitching posts. Shoppers on the hunt for unique trinkets might want to continue south until Benefit Street dead-ends into Wickeden Street, a Bohemian enclave of antique and import shops. From Providence, travel south on I-95 and SR 27 to Mystic, and begin leg 2 of your journey. LEG 2: MYSTIC, CONN., TO BOSTON, MASS. - 117 MILES Mystic was a bustling 19th-century whaling and shipbuilding seaport before becoming one of Connecticut's top tourist destinations. During its seafaring heyday, laborers designed the country's speediest clipper ships. A maritime flavor defines Mystic's personality, reflected in its quaint architecture and curious shops. The town is perhaps best known for its replicated mid-1800s Mystic Seaport, a AAA GEM attraction. Historic houses, trade buildings and shops provide insight into mid-19th-century coastal life, while gallery exhibits demonstrate the influence of the whaling trade on Colonial America. The re-created nautical community also features a working shipyard with more than 400 carefully preserved boats–three of them are open for touring, including the last surviving wooden whaling vessel. You can peruse village stores typical of the industry, including a ship's chandlery, or simply take in the flourishing waterfront activity. In a city defined by water, aquatic sightseeing is a popular pastime. Take a cruise on an 81-foot schooner at Voyager Cruises, or visit frolicking seals, penguins and sea lions at Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration. Beluga whales also reside here, and you can actually wade with one Mystic Whaler (and touch its tongue!) if you sign up for an animal contact program. Kids love observing some 3,500 sea creatures, especially the happy-go-lucky bottlenose dolphins. The onsite Institute of Exploration, which specializes in finding underwater wrecks, features a Titanic display that includes a 25-foot replica of the ship's bow. Shoppers in need of some retail recreation should explore Olde Mistick Village. Specialty stores are set amid a tranquil Colonial New England setting, complete with flowered paths and a waterwheel. Kids flock to the duck pond. Depart Mystic on US 1 east, then take SR 138 east to Newport, a renowned recreational sailing hub with a rich marine heritage. The key 17th-century shipbuilding center and thriving 18th-century port has managed to retain its nautical charm. Stroll by the harbor to see luxurious yachts sharing space with rustic lobster boats, or hunt for retail delights in restored shops at Bowen's and Bannister's wharfs. Steady winds and deep water aren't Newport's only claim to fame. The town became a 19th-century hotspot for the super-rich, who built lavish estates overlooking long stretches of pristine beach and busied themselves with the Social Register. It just so happens that many of these magnificent "cottages" are open to the public for guided walking tours. Head to Newport's southern tip to take the Cliff Walk, a 3-mile path skirting bluffs and providing peeks at gigantic mansions tucked behind tasteful shrubbery. At this point, you can travel north along Bellevue Avenue to explore the stately manors. Leave Newport and travel north on SR 114, SR 24 and I-93 to Boston, the point of origin for this drive trip. 20 Auto travel Escape to Michigan’s Mackinac Island First a guardian of the Straits of Mackinac, now a destination for thousands of northbound vacationers, Mackinaw City was once a trading post established by early French settlers; the post became Fort Michilimackinac in 1715. During the ensuing decades the strategically situated garrison was held successively by the French, the British, the American Indians, then the British again. The British moved the fort to Mackinac Island in 1780. The city is connected to the Upper Peninsula by way of the Mackinac Bridge. One of the longest suspension spans in the world, it stretches for 5 miles. Built in 1957, it provided a convenient means of transportation between the two peninsulas. The passenger vehicle toll is $1.50 per axle or $3.50 per car. All other vehicles are $3.50 per axle. Each Labor Day morning thousands participate in the Mackinac Bridge Walk, from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City. In late May the Fort Michilimackinac Pageant is held on the grounds of Colonial Michilimackinac. Colonial Michilimackinac Colonial Michilimackinac is on the site of Fort Michilimackinac. The fort comprises 27 acres. Built by the French in 1715, it was occupied by British forces from 1761 until 1781. Among the 13 reconstructed buildings are a priest's house, a guardhouse, blockhouses, barracks, a storehouse, a Fort Michilimackinac Mackinac Island blacksmith shop, a French church and a British trader's house. Costumed reenactments, an audiovisual program and exhibits illustrate the history of the fort. Other programs include blacksmithing and cooking demonstrations, musket and cannon firings, a Colonial wedding and dance, an American Indian encampment, an archeological tunnel exhibit and the arrival of French voyageurs. (Not insurance points.) New Jersey law also requires passenger vehicle insurers to provide an insurance rate reduction to eligible drivers who complete the AAA course. Question: When was the first highway concrete median barrier installed in New Jersey? A. 1940 B. 1945 C. 1950 D. 1955 E. 1960 Answer: D. 1955 was this date, and the barrier was only 18 inches high originally. The New Jersey barriers today are the most used design, yet the Fshaped profile developed in Virginia is currently challenging ours with better technology. Drivers wishing to enroll in the program for DMV point reduction should first confirm the existence of two or more Motor Vehicle points on their driving record by calling the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles at 1609-292-7500. Times Have Changed Today, a call to AAA may still result in one of those scenarios. However, before your vehicle is towed, every effort will be made to resolve the problem on the roadside so you can drive away and get on with your day. Honestly, wouldn’t you rather have your problem resolved immediately instead of having it moved (towed) elsewhere to be resolved? A New Day for AAA AAA’s Emergency Roadside Service Technicians—you used to know them as “tow truck drivers”— can resolve some electrical issues, replace a spent battery with a new AAA-branded battery in some locations, deliver fuel, install your spare tire, unlock a vehicle whose keys have been locked inside, and much more. To get more stranded members on their way, AAA has employed several new practices: Counselors who receive calls from members have been trained to ask specific questions to ensure the appropriate service technician is dispatched. Training of service technicians has been increased and specialized, so they can more quickly diagnose a problem. Service technicians have been equipped with tools and new technology that oftentimes allow them to resolve the problem instead of towing the vehicle. Motorists have relied on AAA for more than 100 years to tow their vehicles, so who better to trust than AAA to resolve your breakdown problem and get you back on your way. Sometimes the problem may be easier to fix than you think You don’t have to be a auto technician to resolve some vehicle problems yourself. If you are having trouble starting your car, here are some simple resolutions you can safely attempt on your own before calling AAA. Engine won’t start or turn over If the engine is fast clicking when you turn the key, try starting it with the gearshift in neutral. If you hear one click, but nothing more, try to start it with the gearshift in neutral. If you hear no click when you turn the key, first verify you are using the right key. (If you have more than one vehicle from the same manufacturer, the key from one vehicle may fit in the other—it just won’t start it.) If you have electric locks, try locking and unlocking the driver’s door. If you have an alarm system, make sure it is disarmed. Engine won’t start, but it does turn over • Check the fuel gauge to make sure there is gas in the vehicle. • Remove and replace the fuel cap. Steering wheel is locked • Verify you are using the right key. • Check to see if the vehicle is wedged on a curb. • Move the steering wheel to the left and right repeatedly while turning the key. If none of these tips solves your problem, it’s time to contact AAA to send a service vehicle. If one of these does work—Congratulations!—but if the problemrepeats itself later, you’ll want to have a qualified technician check the vehicle to get to the root of the problem.
