President’s Message:
Here it is August already and the summer is more than half over. It seems that
we just had our Spring Fling get-together and now the Fall Membership picnic
will be coming up at the end of this month. I’m expecting we will have as good a
turn out as we did in the spring. I hope everyone’s summer is going well and
filled with fun and exciting experiences.
The Board took the month of July off from our monthly meetings but will be meeting again in August.
We are already discussing/planning ski trips for next season. It seems hard to imagine in the middle of
this heat, but the snow will be flying before we know it. So enjoy the rest of the summer while it lasts.

10th Mountain Hut Trips
Aug. 10th to 12th & Aug. 17th to 19th
The Flatirons Ski Club reserves a 10th MT. Div. Hut for 2 nights
every year. The Club has reserved this summer the Eiseman
Hut North of Vail in the Gore Range for 2 trips. The cost for 2
nights in a dorm, 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts is $70. The group
meets at McDonalds in Vail and convoys to the start of the
4WD road. 4WD vehicles carry personal gear (including
sleeping bags), drinking water and food to the cabin. Most of
the group will hike about 2 hours to the cabin. There will be
hikes in the Gore Range or you can just sit and enjoy the view
from the patio. There is an outhouse. The 1st Hut Trip is full.
Due to cancellations there is presently a space for two
people on the 2nd Hut Trip.
If you were too late to sign up and missed this great trip,
call now for a stay at a 10th Mt. Div. Hut at
half price. Stewart Woodward 303-665-9438

Summer 2016
Wildflower Rambles
Eight FSC members take turns leading wildflower rambles each summer. The rambles are relaxed and slow
paced to allow attention to the details of the flowers and plants and to aid identification. We also pay special
attention to a particular flower group on each trip. Please note that wildflower rambles are not hikes. Bring sun
protection, snack/lunch, water (especially important in these days of intense heat), rain gear and field guides.
There is a carpool fee payable to the driver.
Wednesday, July 27 Jean Lunning Trail, Long Lake and Niwot Ridge, Brainard Lake Recreation Area
Leaders: Linda Paris and Maddy Goldhawk This is one of our favorites, as we usually see lots of wildflowers.
The Lunning ramble is an easy, flat walk through the subalpine life zone around Long Lake in the Brainard Lake
Recreation Area. The lush meadow near the lake should be spectacular. Due to permit considerations, please
contact Linda at 303-530-2423 if you would like to come on this ramble. Those who wish a longer or higher
experience into the upper subalpine or tundra life zone can continue up to Niwot Ridge with Maddy Goldhawk.
Come prepared for variable weather (raingear and water). Bring a lunch and snacks. Meet at 7:00 AM behind
the 3 Margaritas (Diagonal Plaza) at Iris and 28th St. to carpool. Bring your Golden Age pass, if you have one.
Carpool fee: $7.00.
Wednesday, August 3 East Portal Leader: Claudia VanWie This is a “Smart Phlower” Ramble. Your
cellphone can be a fountain of knowledge on the trail. There are a number of useful apps for identifying flowers.
This ramble will focus on using a cellphone for flower identification and photography. Claudia will demonstrate
several apps and give some cellphone camera tips. Bring your phone! Carpool fee: $5.00 Meet at 8:00 AM at
Eben Fine Park at the west end of Arapahoe Ave in Boulder. You may find a list of nature and camera apps at
http://bcna.org/apps.html
Monday, August 8 Lake Isabelle, Brainard Lake Recreation Area Leaders: Maddy Goldhawk and Judy
LaMaitis This ramble is longer and more rigorous than our previous one to Jean Lunning in July. Due to permit
considerations, please contact Maddy at 303-494-7953 if you would like to come on this ramble. Meet at 7:00
AM behind 3 Margaritas (Diagonal Plaza) at 28th and Iris. The hour is early, but this popular area fills up shortly
after 8 AM in the summer months and the parking has been altered and reduced by the Forest Service. Please
bring a Golden Age pass if you have one – this is a fee area and this pass is good for admission to Brainard.
Come prepared for variable weather (raingear and water). Bring a snack and lunch. Carpool fee: $7.00.
HEDWIG and the ANGRY INCH
Hedwig and the Angry Inch is the genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing
musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances that
tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage.
Brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, Hedwig and the
Angry Inch is the landmark American musical by John Cameron Mitchell
and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its
time” (Entertainment Weekly).
Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and winner of four 2014 Tony Awards
including Best Musical Revival, Hedwig and the Angry Inch played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on
Broadway and promises to take Denver by storm with what Time magazine proclaims is “the most exciting
rock score written for the theater since, oh, ever!”
Ticket cost: $33 There are a limited number of tickets
When: December 9, 2016 at 7:30 pm
Where: Buell Theater
Contact Sandy Morris by email at [email protected] or phone 303-955-4910.
THURSDAY HIKERS
Summer is here and so is hiking season. Spring flowers have been good and summer
flowers will be too. In July, we will hike according to the weather and trail conditions. There is
still a lot of snow in the mountains. As of a few weeks ago, Brainard had almost 60 inches of
snow! We could be hiking high or low - so please come prepared for either. Be sure to bring
food for lunch and snacks, plenty of water, and clothes for all conditions.
Call Connie Macinko at 303-443-6572 for more information.
We will meet at 8:00 AM. Please arrive by 7:45 AM so we can decide where we are going
and can form car pools. We will leave at 8:00 AM sharp. We meet in the south east corner of
Meadows Shopping Center close to the frontage road.
Watrous Gulch
During the summer we will also do a special hike on the 3rd Thursday of every month.
Third Thursday Hike - August 18th - Silver Dollar/Murray Lakes Trail
Due to trail conditions we did not do this hike in July but did Watrous Gulch. Trailhead is on Guanella
Pass Road above Georgetown. The trail is well defined, rocky, uneven, and not officially maintained. It
is an in/out trail starting 11,265”, Silver Dollar 11,950”, and Murray 12,178’ seeing Naylor Lake far
below. Total roundtrip is 4.3 miles depending on parking. The hike is short but at over 12,000’, who
needs long. It is open tundra, wildflowers, a touch of snow, small beautiful lakes.
