WPA Announces Participants For Mentorship Program
University of Wisconsin River Falls Junior, Mikayla Wehrle,
will be taking part in Wisconsin Pork Association activities
for the coming year through the Wisconsin Pork Mentorship
Program. Mikayla has shown a number of champions including this winning Spot at Wisconsin State Fair.
Mikayla Wehrle, New London, and
Mercedes Schulz, Dalton, have been
selected to participate in Wisconsin
Pork Association’s new Pork Mentorship
Program.
Mikayla is a UW-River Falls junior
majoring in animal science. She has been
involved in the swine industry for many
years through involvement in her family’s
farm, 4-H, and showing pigs.
Mercedes is a freshman at Iowa State
University pursuing a degree in agriculture
and life sciences education with an
emphasis on communications. She is
active in showing pigs at county, state and
national levels and is involved in raising
show pigs on her family’s farm.

create valuable connections with potential
employers. Upon successful completion of
the program, the selected participants will
receive a $500 scholarship to apply towards
their education expenses.

Wisconsin State Fair Junior Breeding Show Rules Updated
Wisconsin State Fair officials are excited
to announce an update to rules and
regulations for youth exhibitors in the
Junior dairy, beef, swine, sheep and
goat
departments. Existing ownership
and managerial program rules have been
updated to reflect the changing dynamics
of farms and exhibitors.
Beginning in 2016 there will no longer be
ownership date deadlines or specific name
requirements for exhibitors entering and
showing registered animals in the junior
breeding stock shows and all non - market
animal shows. The updated ownership
verbiage eliminates the formal Wisconsin
State Fair managerial paper submission and
any previous registration transfer dates.
Junior exhibitors must submit Fair entries
by the June 1 entry deadline online at
Wisconsin Pork Association
http://wistatefair.com/competitions/juniorlivestock/ or by mailing a paper entry
postmarked June 1 or before.
Please note: for 2016 there will only be
one entry deadline date for mailed and
online entries at regular fees (June 1).
Late entries will be accepted for additional
fees through June 8.
Also, youth will now be required to list
a potential substitution entry for each
animal entered at the time of entry, in case
the official animal entered is unable to be
exhibited at the annual Fair.
Substitutions will only be allowed from
animals declared as such on initial entry. “It
is our intent to make the process of entering
and exhibiting at the Wisconsin State Fair
more inclusive,” said Brian Bolan, Wisconsin

Welcome!
Wisconsin Pork Association
Buy Wisconsin First Swine Directory
Wisconsin Pork Association is the source for representing the state’s pork industry
and advocates on behalf of all Wisconsin pork producers and pork industry members.
We are proud of our state’s uniquely diverse swine industry, ranging from small to
large and including all types of operations.
WPA activities are paid for with checkoff and non-checkoff dollars. Funding for the
checkoff comes from pig farmers. The National Pork Board collects and distributes
checkoff funds for promotion, research, and consumer information programs.
These programs are designed to strengthen the position of the pork industry in
the marketplace and to maintain, develop, and expand markets for pork and pork
products. Examples of WPA’s checkoff-funded activities include producer education
(such as PQA Plus® and TQA® certification courses); virtual farm tours for
elementary school classrooms; farm tours and educational materials for dieticians
and healthcare providers; youth scholarships; retail and restaurant promotions; radio
and print advertising; and much more.
Non-checkoff funds in Wisconsin are generated through activities like the Pork
Schoppe and Pork Classic golf outing. In addition, the Strategic Investment Program
offers pig farmers an opportunity to invest voluntary dollars into both the National
Pork Producers Council and the Wisconsin Pork Association. Non-checkoff funds are
used for legislative and regulatory programs.
Funds generated through annual association membership dues also support
WPA’s public policy and advocacy initiatives. WPA monitors bills in the Wisconsin
Legislature and their potential impact on Wisconsin pig farms. In addition, we work
with state agencies, such as the Department of Agriculture and Department of
Natural Resources, to ensure rules and programs are favorable to agriculture. We
also communicate regularly with Wisconsin’s Congressmen and Senators.
If you are not currently a WPA member, we encourage you to sign up today. Further
information on our membership program and benefits is available at www.wppa.org
or by calling 800-822-7675.

Gunderson Memorial Scholarship
The Wisconsin Pork Association, in
cooperation with the family of Buell
Gunderson, established a scholarship
program in 2007 to recognize the many
contributions that Buell Gunderson made
to the Wisconsin pork industry. Gunderson,
together with his wife, Bernice, served as
Secretary/Treasurer of the Wisconsin Pork
Association for 20 plus years and assisted
in growing the organization from its initial
roots to the successful organization that it is
today--sponsoring scholarships, developing
youth programs and helping to support the
pork producers of the state.
Individuals who have shown considerable
dedication and involvement to the pork
industry are eligible for this scholarship.
Consideration is given to youth who have
established their own production herd,
been involved on their family operation, or
shown specific interest in pork production
or

“When you are in the showring, always keep your cool.
Even if your pig starts acting up, stay calm. Showmanship is
all about the connection between you and your pig,” stresses
Shelby Veum, Stoughton, WI. “Spend as much time as you can
working with your animals and don’t forget to give them lots
of loving. The more time you spend with them, the more they
will trust you and that trust will show in the ring”.
These words of advice paid off for the Stoughton High School
junior who was named Reserve Supreme Barrow Showman at
the 2015 Wisconsin State Fair.
“I have been extremely blessed to accomplish all the things
I have,” Veum continues.
“Here are some of my favorites: Having the 2014 Champion
Chester at the National Western Stock Show in Denver,
Colorado; exhibiting the Champion Chester barrow and
Chester breeding gilt at the 2015 Wisconsin State Fair; being
named the 2015 Wisconsin Show Pig Association High Point
Intermediate Showman and also winning all my showmanship
age divisions at my local, county and state fairs this year. And
of course being the reserve overall barrow showman at the
2015 Wisconsin State Fair.”
Shelby Veum is the daughter of Kenny and Cindy Veum and
has one older brother, Ben Veum. The Veum family live on a
35 acre farm near Stoughton. Shelby and her brother have
three sows they farrow in the winter for crossbred barrows for
their county fair. They have had great success with these pigs.
They also buy other show pigs for other shows.
“We usually have an additional 15-20 show pigs in our show
barn during show season,” Veum confirms.
It was Shelby’s brother, Ben, that led her into the swine show
world. Ben’s first show animals were two lambs. The next year,
they expanded their horizons and added a couple pigs. That
year, Ben exhibited the champion barrow at the Dane County
Fair. That is what it took to hook the family on showing swine.
A few years later, Shelby was old enough to show her own
animals. She has loved it every since.
“I mostly show barrows, but enjoy having a gilt or two also.
My favorite breed to show is Chester Whites,” she tells.
“Showing livestock has helped me grow as a person by
allowing me to work hard at my projects and seeing that hard
work finally pays off,” the showman tells. “It has also taught

me the opportunity to meet so many people from all over the

“My brother has had the most influence on me developing

I know,” reveals the young showman who plans to attend a
university and major in something within agriculture. “ I would

Driving For Success With One
Hannah Peltier, Dresser, WI
Buy Wisconsin First Swine Directory
Exhibitor of Supreme Champion Gilt, Wisconsin State Fair Junior Gilt Show
It’s quality, not numbers, that
matters! A statement that could well
summarize the 2015 show season for
Hannah Peltier, Dresser, WI.
“Since we only have a couple show
pig litters a year, it makes it easier to
pick out the ones I’d like to show. This
past year we ended up with only one
Yorkshire litter; and that litter was
small with only five babies,” relates
Hannah. “My mom and I were there
when the babies were born; and we
knew as soon as the girl came out
that she was something special”.
The special girl Hannah is referring
to went on to be the Supreme Champion Bred and Owned
Gilt and Reserve Champion Yorkshire
Gilt of the 2015 Wisconsin State Fair
Junior Swine Show.
Hannah Peltier, the daughter of
Allen and Carla Peltier, has been
showing hogs since she joined 4-H
in fifth grade.
“I chose a pig because my father
wouldn’t allow me to show a steer,
He said I was ‘too small’, the St. Croix
Falls High School Senior, tells.
“We had feeder pigs in the past so
I was somewhat familiar with the
species”.
“Yorkshire was the only breed
available to me my first year, so it
made picking a pig easy. But truly
they are my favorite. The Yorkshire
breed have great personalities; they
are social, enjoy belly rubs, and are
super smart. In my opinion they
make the best mothers too; they are calm and gentle with
their babies, yet protective but not too protective”, Hannah
explains.
Hannah shows both market hogs and breeding stock. At
her county fair, Polk County, she shows market hogs because
of the Quality Meat Auction. And at WI State Fair she has
exhibited both market hogs and breeding stock.
“I would consider our family farm to be on the small side. In
fact, our farm was started with a gilt I showed at our county
fair,” Hannah explains. “It was my Dad’s idea to bring her
home and try to have a litter”.
“Fast forward seven years and we now have eleven mature
sows, and a boar. Six of the sows are my own, and five are
my mom’s. I focus more on the show pigs, and my Mom more
on the outdoor heritage hogs,” she continues.
“My Mom and I do 90% of the work. We go out twice daily
to feed/water sows; and check on the little ones. Often times
there is either a pen to clean or hogs that need to be moved
from one area to the next. Most Saturdays are spent cleaning
the barn and doing larger, more time consuming chores. My
mom and I do all of the AI (artificial insemination) as well
10
as give shots, castrate, clip teeth, dock tails … and whatever
else needs to be done. My Dad helps with building and
maintaining the pens; making sure the fence is working, and
gives us a hand when needed.”
“The show pigs that I choose not to keep back and raise,
I later sell to family and friends as market hogs or keep for
future breeding. The majority of our pigs though are sold as
“feeders” – 40 pound babies. We sell them to a private buyer
when they are done nursing off their mom. He picks them
up and raises them for butcher, organically. He then sells
the meat to high end grocery stores and restaurants. One of
the restaurants is a local restaurant called ‘Farm to Table’ in
Amery, WI,” she continues.
Showmanship Is Favorite
“I love doing well in showmanship; it is one of the best
feelings I have ever known,” states
Hannah. “In my seven years of
showing I have won showmanship
three times at our county fair. This
past year I was grateful to have
won senior champion showman, as
well as Supreme Overall Champion.
Also, one of the best feelings is
showing an awesome animal from
your own farm, and doing well”.
“The family that has had
the greatest influence on the
development of my project is the
Lappnow family, also known as
Valley Yorkshires. They provided me
with my first Yorkshire show pig that
caused me to fall in love with the
breed. They also sold us the gilt that
we kept to have “one litter” with.
She is no longer with us, but “Miss
May May” was the foundation to all
our show pigs, and hog farm. The Lappnow family has helped
tremendously with everything; from feed to farrowing to
support and friendship. Katie Lappnow, their daughter, taught
me what grace looks like both in and out of the show ring.
And has taught me to be grateful for
a win or a loss.”
“Showing swine has taught me so
much that I wouldn’t be close to the
person I am today without it. I learned
how to work hard, and that hard
work is necessary to achieve success.
I learned that winning is only a small
part of the experience; and even if you
don’t win it was still all worth it. I’ve
learned respect for other showmen,
and respect for animals. Showing
swine has given me something to put
my time and effort into; and be proud
of something I did myself”, the high
school senior concludes.

State Fair Rules Updated

State Fair Agriculture and Youth Programs
Director.
“Although existing ownership and
managerial rules were similar to industry
standards, we felt a great amount of
time was being spent on determining who
owned an entry or submitting an official
managerial document for breeding stock.
We believe these program updates will
make it easier for youth to participate with
their breeding animal projects without
the hassle of ownership deadlines and
managerial documentation.”

and third generation hog producer, Billy, demonstrated the
depth of his breeding program at the 2015 Wisconsin State
Fair.
The Supreme Champion Bred and Owned Barrow and the
Champion Bred and Owned Duroc Gilt and Reserve Supreme
Bred and Owned Gilt were the entries of Outhouse. The
barrow was Champion Performance entry live and on the
scan going on to be Overall Grand Champion.
In the summer of 2014, Outhouse exhibited the Reserve
Champion Duroc Gilt at the World Pork Expo.
Billy Outhouse credits his parents, Blayne and Kelli and his
grand parents, Bill and Betty, for his interest in swine.
“My father, Blayne, and my grandfather, Bill, have had
the most influence in my life and in the development of our
swine project,” he tells.
“Bill raised Berkshire hogs in the 1950’s and 1960’s with
success, including showing at Wisconsin State Fair and
national shows. His love of Berkshire hogs is still evident
in decisions we make regarding our show animals. Bill is
at nearly every show I participate in and is very involved in
supporting me day to day,” he adds.
“My father, Blayne, has had a love of the swine industry
since his own days showing hogs in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
His commitment to the swine industry is what got me
started, we work together in the barn most days, discussing
options for the future, and decisions that need to be made”.

The operation includes 16 sows, Durocs, Berkshires and

“We market our animals by selling off the farm, promotion
on social media and going to sales,” the high school
sophomore tells. “I selected swine for my project because it
was what we raise and chose to raise Durocs because they
are my favorite breed.”
“I feed them twice a day, clean pens, do a visual health
check of the pigs to make sure they are doing well. I also
evaluate the show pigs to see what they need, the sows,
and consider what boar we want to breed them to. In the
fall we are busy breeding,” the Oregon High School student
relates.
When selecting breeding gilts, Billy looks for structure,
soundness, depth of rib and a feminine look. For the barrows
he seeks structure, bone, depth of rib, width in the front and

rear.
