It’s hard to believe that the Summer of 2016 is behind us. We spend our whole year
preparing for these 7 weeks. For 10 months we have been preparing lists, making
schedules, hiring staff, planning special events and opening up camp after a long winter.
But it is only when you the campers, cross that bridge in June for the first time that this
camp finally comes alive. It is your voices and your laughter, throughout the day and well
into the night after dark that transforms this place into something truly special.
I have spent the last 17 years at camp and while every summer has been amazing in
it’s own way, this summer has been a particularly special one for me. Seeing the spirit
of Wingate develop and grow has been incredible to watch. To see how far the camp
has come in just 2 short years is nothing short of amazing. The best part of being the
head counsellor is being able to spend time with and form bonds with campers of all
ages. As I watch the bunk 2 and 12 kids say goodbye to their camper years, I realize
how privileged I have been to be able to spend so many of my summers with these kids
watching them grow up. Looking at the juniors in bunk 5 and 6, I am excited to watch
the first Wingate generation grow up here. As a counsellor and section head at camp,
I had the same group of kids from when they were juniors until high seniors. This
summer, this group became staff for the first time and I was so proud to watch them
become counsellors and develop relationships with their own campers. Amazing to
watch how things come full circle at camp.
It’s hard to put into words what is so amazing about this camp. We think the answer is
that it is the sum of many things . There are the obvious things like waterskiing, boating,
leagues, specialties, basketball on lower field, evening activities and flagpole that are all
part of our daily life at camp. Then there are the special events like POTH, Super Bowl,
Wingate Wars, and MAC that highlight our summer. It’s also the unexpected little things
that just make us happy like a Saturday sleep in, bunk chills on a rainy day, popsicles for
milk and cookies, extra wall time, a sun and swim and chocolatines for breakfast. But we
think more than anything it is the intangibles that make the most special moments of the
summer. Staying up late at night chatting with your friends, jumping off the dock with
your bunk into the lake on a hot day, suddenly freezing to see who stacks your table or
making smores around a bonfire. These are things you can’t recreate anywhere but here.
So if you’re sitting in school this year and you find your self day dreaming of camp with
the tune of Piano man in your head, remember that feeling we all have at Saturday night
sing song. Singing as loud as you can arm in arm with your best friends wishing we could
“stay in camp just a little bit longer”. That is the feeling that cannot be described to anyone
who hasn’t been here and experienced this camp. Those feelings and memories will stick
with you not just throughout the year ahead but for your entire life.
The weather will turn cold soon and you will begin the countdown to another summer at
camp. Keep your summer memories close and before you know it the Wingates will open
up again for Summer 2017.
Until then, thank you for an incredible summer and have a great school year!
I want to thank each and every one of you for making this summer so special. You have
made me laugh a million times and provided me with so many great memories. I will
genuinely miss coming around every night to your bunks and checking in with you at
the end of the day. I wish you all a wonderful school year and can’t wait to see you all
next summer!!
From Head Staff...
With 80+ years of combined experience as both campers and staff, it was a first for many of us as head
staff this summer. With the loss of our former camp fresh in our minds, we did not take a minute (or
camper) for granted this year and we strongly believe that it showed in the programming we created
for each section. Rather than merely hope for campers to enjoy the various events we have come to
love over the years, we decided to both merge our older traditions with the changing wants and needs
of today’s camper. In the final week, each bunk was given a special night (whether it was late night
sports, pizza parties, ice cream or pool parties) as we know that the most lasting memories are made
during the extracurricular activities shared between staff and campers. We approached our jobs with
a passion that can only be associated with a true love for camp. It was honour to be able to embrace
this “second chance” and it is one we all appreciate more than words can express. We had an amazing
summer with every single camper and we can’t wait to see you next summer!

The bunk 1 girls were a force to be reckoned with from the minute they stepped off the bus in June! They
came together early in the summer to create an emotional and moving POTH performance that left the
camp speechless. The girls continued to impress us with their performances in the folk song competition
and numerous inter camp matches. This group of girls were always enthusiastic and participated in
everything we did at camp. They were well known around camp for their athletic capabilities and were
always the first to sign up for multisport speciality. From basketball to soccer they proved to be strong
competitors, no matter who they were matched up against. Throughout the summer the girls’ friendships
got stronger and they created bonds that will last a lifetime. We will definitely miss our cozy Disney
movie nights and our intense games of LIFE, Spit and Haunted House will not be forgotten. We loved
being their counsellors and they touched our hearts in ways that cannot be expressed in words and
changed our summers in a way we could never have imagined. We can’t wait to reunite with them not too
long after camp for our first bunk reunion at iSaute and again next summer.

The bunk 2 migh (mid/high) senior girls of summer 2016 both understood and displayed what it truly
means to be a bunk. Despite the fact that the bunk consisted of 2 age groups, they were united as a group
all summer long. At the end of Super Bowl, one of our most competitive events of the summer, the girls
were not divided but even more united, sharing the pride and joy of their winning bunkmates. After
bringing home the win for POTH it was clear that Bunk 2’s bond would never be broken and this was
demonstrated throughout the summer. From prank wars with the bunk 12 boys, to dressing up in their
clothes, to water fights and drip drip drop, the bunk 2 girls never left a sister behind and ended every
day as one. We had an amazing summer with the girls and are already excited to spend our summer with
them again in 2017!

We had a great summer with the Inter girls in Bunk 3. Each of our campers lit up the bunk with their
distinct personalities, bright energy and constant laughter. We were thrilled to see that they all got
along so well, and by the end of their summer we knew that a special bond had been created.
Though our bunk was tight knit, we had campers from across the continent; Montreal, Toronto,
Ottawa, and Mexico City. We were pleasantly surprised to see that even the girls who had come to
camp by themselves made new friends quickly.
We started the summer off with Putting On The Hits, which the girls worked hard to perfect. They
performed the song “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson and did a great job. They worked just as hard on
their dance for the Winnie’s, when they dressed up as cheerleaders and danced to “Hey Mickey” from
Bring It On.
Beyond camp wide events, the girls were eager to get into the spirit of camp and hoped to prank the
boys their age. When we heard about their plan, we decided to one up them with a prank of our own.
They snuck out to bunk 14 and got “caught” by Spike, who led them to the dining hall under the guise
of getting in trouble. Upon arriving we revealed that they were actually about to have a pizza party!!!
The Inter girls were extremely active throughout the day and put their all into each activity on their
schedule (even though they dreaded swimming instruction). They were particularly enthusiastic about
waterskiing and gaga ball, and during specialties they flocked to boating and A&C.
Though they spent all of their time together during the day, much of the bunk 3 bond was created at
nighttime, when the girls would sit around, have a snack, and make each other (and us) laugh. They
put on a nightly talent show-- “America’s Got Talent”-- where they would exchange stories, dance, and
sing. The laughter would continue uninterrupted until it was time for bed.
The Inter girls were excellent, both as individuals and as a group. They made our summer so much fun
and we hope we did the same for them. We miss them dearly, we’ll keep in touch and hope to see them
back here next summer!!!

We’d first like to start my saying that we had an incredible summer in Bunk 4 and we will truly miss
our boys! What at first seemed like a daunting task, namely controlling 20+ campers and bringing
them together as bunk, became one of the defining strengths of our group. The quality of our
bond matched the quantity of our members, and the ability of the boys to include each member in
various ways was something all the counsellors commend them for. One moment in which the boys
really came together was during POTH, as everyone understood the importance of perfecting their
individual roles in order to contribute towards the greater good of the whole. Although we ended up
placing third, the camaraderie was evident as the boys consoled one another. Moreover, the intense
disappointed we saw in every camper’s eyes following that loss highlighted their true passion/spirit for
camp.
As first month came to a close, we decided to create an identity for the bunk that would signify their
commitment to having one another’s backs and would stick with them for the rest of the camp lives
(and hopefully beyond). As you will likely hear, this identity is “Wilder Heights,” and since receiving
their title, the bunk really hit its stride. To illustrate this new gear, the boys carried a green Frisbee to
every single activity and made sure it didn’t touch the ground for the better part of a month, a mission
the staff gave to them to test their commitment to their “brothers”. The members of Wilder Heights
were officially sworn in during our “under-night,” in which the kids and staff camped out and cooked
dinner over a fire we started and maintained (we were surprised at the number of outdoorsmen in our
bunk).
Another significant moment during the summer was when the bunk single-handedly organized
and reffed their own “Leagues.” For those that are unfamiliar with “Leagues,” it is when campers
make teams and compete in various sports such as basketball, baseball, football and soccer. Over the
course of two weeks, the boys played over 10 games and were both enthusiastic and competitive. We
were blown away to see them take initiative and be as successful as they were. We had an incredible
summer at Wingate in 2016 and cannot wait for next summer! Each year our numbers have grown
exponentially and we regard that as nothing more than a compliment to the group of leaders we have
compiled over the past 5 years. 2016 was a testament to the potential of this group and the amazing
times ahead of them as Wilder Heights!

The junior boys were an incredible bunk of kids this summer! They loved camp and were passionate
about everything they did from a game of cards to Wingate Wars. We loved being in each other presence
and everything we did, we did together as a bunk. We welcome a few inters into the family with open
arms and loved being united as bunk 514. From Nathan vs Noah laundry soak race to finishing second
as a bunk in the Winnie’s, we created memories that we will all remember forever and can’t wait to make
many more in the years to come.

Throughout this summer, 18 junior girls passed through bunk 6, each bringing their own personality,
enthusiasm and emoji pillows through the door. We became a close knit family that shared so many
amazing moments together, from intense games of stando and gaga ball to blissful boating periods
and bedtime stories. We sang with energy at every sing song and danced our hearts out at the Winnies.
The girls learned a lot about sportsmanship and team spirit through competing in Superbowl 2016,
the Euro cup and Wingate Wars. We can’t wait to see the girls representing Apache and Lakota in the
future as senior camper captains. One of the many highlights of bunk 6’s time together this summer
was preparing their POTH. The girls chose the song “Fight Song” which they used to demonstrate
their courage, confidence and unity as a bunk. As staff to these intelligent, charismatic young girls, we
enjoyed every minute of our time together and we look forward to seeing them blossom into confident,
independent and mature young women. We miss you girls already!

What a great summer we had at CHX! This summer we worked with a lot of talented players who were
eager to improve their games. The campers had the privilege to go on the ice, daily with ex professional
hockey player, Cory Pecker, who helped the kids tremendously on their shots and their one on one
defensive positioning. The players worked just as hard on the ice as they did off the ice. In addition
to skating twice a day, the campers worked out in between each ice session with professional trainer,
Jeremy Rubin, who worked a lot with the kids on becoming more aware of their bodies and how they
work and move. Jeremy also worked with the players on their mental strength, which they learned was
just as important as their physical strength. All in all, each and every camper was able to leave with the
tools to take themselves to the next level. We wish all of our players good luck next season. On behalf
of the CHX staff (Cory Pecker, Jeremy Rubin, Evan Azimov, and Skyler S. Budman) we would like to
thank all of the parents who entrusted us with their children. We had just as much fun as they did and
we look forward to another hardworking and fun summer next year!

With all the hype that surrounds a high senior summer, it is very rare that expectations are surpassed,
let alone matched. This summer has truly been one for the ages, and despite some interesting
moments, it could not have gone any better. From midnight Frisbee games, to Walking Hard, and
failed flag pranks, we’ve made memories that will last a lifetime. What’s so amazing about this bunk
is the chemistry that you boys had from the get-go. Every single kid was such an integral part of our
identity, which is even more amazing when you notice that there were 7 mid seniors, 5 first time
campers, our boys Jeff and Niko from Taiwan, and even Jonah/Michael. This group, which has formed
such a tight, family-like bond since back in our days of bunk 4, relishes the chance to welcome new
campers and make them feel like they have been part of our family for years. That’s what makes you
boys so special. As your camper days wind down, we want you boys all to know that you did things the
right way.

JUNE 2016
For our second year of the LIT program at Wingate, our “leaders in training” had a jam-packed
summer filled with both programs to help prepare them to become a staff, and fun activities. This
summer, the LIT’s were crucial in helping to facilitate some of camps biggest events; whether it was
helping to break POTH, (or maybe Superbowl….) organizing our inaugural Wingate Wars, or being
the chefs for our Wednesday night cookouts! Of all the important things needed to become a staff,
being able to run activities and look after children tops the list. What made this group of LITs so
special was not only their ability to conquer these roles, but to see how natural they were in doing
them. While helping to coach/ref games, taking care of their “little brothers and sisters”, and hanging
out with campers on nightly O.D.’s, this years group created amazingly strong bonds with campers. Just
like our campers, we too are so excited to have our LIT’s back as staff for summer 2017!

On Friday July 1st after the first sing song of the summer, the LIT’s surprised everyone by starting off
the POTH break. Towards the end of their song, they were interrupted by Fleising the director Who
explained to everyone that Peyton Manning was retiring and he had to decide which team, the Broncos
or Colts he would represent in the football hall of fame.
Our weekend was filled with football!! With the boys and girls of all ages participating and playing. We
started off with an early Saturday morning combine followed by team practices. Junior games were played
Saturday afternoon followed up by the captains belly flop competition in the lake. On Saturday night,
we had our own version of a tailgate party complete with a hot dog eating competition. On Sunday the
inters played their games in the morning. The senior girls had the Sunday afternoon game all leading up
to the big game Sunday night. Sunday night football featured the Senior boys playing under the lights on
upper field. The junior girls entertained us with a great dance for the half time show. All in all, it was an
amazing weekend!!!!

Dear sports fans!
For all those reading this for the first time, I am formally known as “The Commish,” and out here at
Camp Wingate, I run a tight ship. Even before the Rio Olympics began, the boys and girls of Camp
Wingate were going for broke during their weekly “Leagues” matchups. To enlighten the amateur sports
fan, Wingate Leagues involves the LITs drafting and molding a team (mixing key ingredients such as
blood, sweat and tears) and facing off against opponents in an array of sports that include ball hockey,
basketball, softball, ultimate frisbee and soccer. This summer featured captivating storylines, such as
Noah Markofsky and Dylan Hacker, two first-round picks, meeting in the finals for a second straight
year. Or the Amiel and Zadeh sisters, forced to push aside family ties in order to do whatever it took to
win for their teams. Overall, whether it was the junior’s League, inter/senior boys League, or the inter/
senior girls League, our campers’ athleticism was on full display over the past two months. Many campers
who never viewed themselves as particularly athletic became game-changers for their team, becoming
“bunk-hold” names. So, if any Wingater ends up on a box of Wheaties on day, you’ll know the Commish
had something to do with it.

WINGATE
WARS
Sung to the tune of: Upside Down by Jack Johnson
Written by: Jessica Azeff and Mattie Tauben
Apache vs Lakota
Chorus:
Apache’s moon will lead to victory
Putting Lakota’s name to history
As night time comes the sunlight can’t be found
We’ll sing and dance as soon as we’ve been crowned
A new beginning is on its way
Many years ago there was tribe called Annishinabe. This tribe worshipped both the sun and the moon.
Over time, the tribe became divided over people preferences for the sun and the moon. Conflict ensued
within the tribe and ultimately the tribe split into 2. Lakota who worshipped the sun and Apache who
worshipped the moon. With both tribal ancestors buried on our land, only one tribe can remain here at
Wingate.
With Wingate being a new camp, we felt it was time to start some new traditions of our own. Our first
Wingate Wars was a huge success.!! The LIT’s did an amazing job leading the tribes by writing the cheers
and songs, making flags and banners and showing incredible spirit throughout the 2 days! On Tuesday
July 19th the entire camp assembled on the beach at midnight with a bonfire, and our first Wingate wars
was officially launched. Campers were divided into 2 tribes. Siblings were put together in the same tribe
and campers will continue to compete in these tribes for the rest of their Wingate years. After an intense
2 days of battling in sports, games, cheering and songs we reassembled on the beach at night for closing
ceremonies. Both teams presented their songs by the fire and this year Apache came out the winner. This
event was truly the highlight of first month and amazing to watch a new camp tradition being born.

As night time comes the sunlight can’t be found
We’ll sing and dance as soon as we’ve been crowned
A new beginning is on its way
Camp chorus
Halfway done
Our summer fun has only just begun
We know no matter where we go
Deep in our hearts we will always know
Wingate’s forever here to stay
We don’t want this feeling to go away
Wingate’s forever here to stay
Lakota song
Sung to the tune of: Say by John Mayer
Written by Harry Moroz Jacquie Dalfen, Talia Tehrani and Mia Markofsky
Camp wingate has been divided
Blue and yellow have collided
Two tribes fight for one land
Beneath the summer sun we stand
Chorus:
A battle is fought today
Apache will run away
The sun shining seems to say
Wingate is ours to take
Right now we stand face to face
The moon will be chased away
A battle is won today
Lakota takes back the day
Verse 2
Wingate is where we have grown
Apache this is not your home
Lakota will put you to shame
Because this is our land to reclaim
Chorus:
Have no fear for giving in
Have no fear our tribe will win
You better know that in the end
Apache won’t have this land
Tomorrow the sun will shine again
Camp chorus:
Even if our hands are shaking
And your faith is broken
Wingate will always open
Because it’s the home we’ve chosen
Wingate we’re here to stay
We’ll never leave this place
It’ll always be the same
No matter what it’s name
We’ll never leave this place
No matter what’s it’s name
Wingate we’re here to stay...
LAKOTA CHEERS

Lakota spirit (louder and louder)
Extra extra read all about it,

There’s no doubt about it.

The week before MAC there were some strange things going on around camp. First everyone’s right shoe went
missing. The next morning when we walked into the dining hall, all the benches had been taken. Then it was the
lifejackets. During the night they were clipped together and hung across the dining hall. Finally, the white picket
fence on the beach disappeared. Unable to figure out who the thieves were, campers were fingerprinted and mug
shots were taken. It was time to call in the professionals to solve the crime. Who better than Scooby Doo and his
gang from Mystery Inc. and the Ghostbusters? After 2 days of incredible spirit and competition, the Scooby Doo
team prevailed and solved the mystery. It was an amazing way to wrap up the summer!!

Scooby Doo Mac Song
To the tune of “You and Me” by Lifehouse
Written by: Sam Schiller, Jenn Beallor, and Harry Moroz
Verse 1
Chorus
A heist has occurred
And Spikes had enough
He’s desperate to seek out some help
He’s dusted for prints
But it’s of no use
Cuz the Schmoove didn’t leave many hints
Cuz Scooby Doo
Will find all the clues
While the Ghostbusters slack
And play with their packs
And Scooby Doo
Will vanquish the Schmoove
Bringing peace to Wingate
Before it’s too late
Verse 2
Mystery Inc. and the Ghostbusters
Were brought in to finish the job
One team will prevail
And there’s no question
That Scooby will not fail
Bridge
Chorus
Camp Chorus
Cuz Scooby Doo
Will find all the clues
While the Ghostbusters slack
And play with their packs
And Scooby Doo
Will vanquish the Schmoove
Bringing peace to Wingate
Before it’s too late
Cuz it’s you and me
Dreading the day
When we have to go
Away from our home
Verse 3
Vilma, Fred, Daph, Shaggie, and Scoob
Are here to lend us a hand
They’re up to the task
They’ll rip off his mask
Forever we will stand
Schiller and Manders rose as our leaders
Guiding us to victory
We won’t give up till it’s through
Cuz it’s you and me
We gotta be strong
Till we cross that bridge
To the place where we know we belong
A heist has occurred
But you cannot steal
The memories and friendships we’ve made
GHOSTBUSTERS MAC SoNG
Sung to the song: Soldier by Gavin DeGraw
Written by: Mattie Tauben, Jess Azeff, Rebecca Falutz and Benji Ziegler
The Big Shmoove is on the go
Camp is split and we just don’t know
Who will be the one to show
The man whose outta control
Searching here, searching there
We’re ready to look everywhere
Scooby Doo won’t be prepared
For our crime solving expertise
Afraid of what he might do
Two teams clashing to find the clue
Cory its up to you
We’re waiting for the moment of truth, yeah
Chorus
Bridge
Wingate is split apart
Two teams but one heart
We’ll fight together
Our spirit will live on forever
Chorus
Ghostbusters are who we need to
Find the con¬¬ and fix this issue
Paranormal activity
Trained us to obtain captivity
Scooby doo will be defeated
They’ll search, but they won’t see it
When you’re in trouble you know who to
call
The Ghostbusters will solve it all
Even when times get hard
Sally and Fleising will lead the charge
Scooby Doo pick up your guard
There’s no room for you meddling kids
Camp Chorus
Camp’s fire is slowly burning
The hands of time are quickly turning
As days pass, the memories made
Come to be ghosts as they start to fade
Camp has fallen through our grasp
Through our fingers and into the past
Season changes but our fire grows
The real issue is where did the time go?
Nananana
Where did the time go?

Who you gonna call

We want to make our friendships
Just a little bit stronger
Now the counsellors don’t mind (no! they don’t mind!)
And the campers don’t mind (no! they don’t mind!)
