The kitchen opens into the family room and new back deck making this “old” house perfect home for entertaining. The 17th Annual Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes The Virginia-Highland Tour of Homes began in 1972 with the first “Virginia-Highland Bungalow Tour”. Since then, home tours were held through 1977 and again in 1980-1982. The focus of these Tours was on “bungalows” and it was more of a local community event. for the HOMES HOLIDAYS The event was re-vitalized in 2004 with the current “Homes for the Holidays” Tour that has become a citywide celebration of the neighborhood. Virginia Highland has become a focal point of Atlanta, drawing many to its rich but unassuming architecture; its cultural events such as the Summerfest Arts Festival; its numerous high quality restaurants and shops; and it’s love of involvement. If ever there was a vibrant and eclectic community that is “involved” in its surroundings, Virginia-Highland is it! The Tour of Homes is a reflection of that ethic. Re-vamped to attract a larger audience and generate income to improve local parks and other civic initiatives, the Tour is also fun and interesting. One cannot find anywhere in Atlanta such a rich and diverse assortment of homes and lifestyles. A History of Virginia-Highland Virginia-Highland traces its roots back to the 1890s when development first began. The Atkins Park District was conceived in 1908 by Edwin Wiley Grove, who was developing the famed Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C. at the same time. The bungalow was one style of home constructed in this area during the 1910s and 1920s, and many of the houses and streets in Virginia-Highland were built during this period. Over the past 50 years the neighborhood has endured highs and lows, including an economic downturn in the 1960s and 1970s, followed by a reclamation phase in the 1980s and 1990s that still continues today.
