SUMMER OF LOVE Show Program
Message from the Producer
Welcome to the world premiere of SUMMER OF LOVE! Musical Theatre West had such a
great response to THE ANDREWS BROTHERS and THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES, we
asked Roger Bean to create a new musical specifically for our audiences. I think you’ll agree
that this retro ‘60s musical has a lot of heart, as well as reminding us of some great music of
days gone by.
Special thanks to our Honorary Producer Kathy Baker Campbell and Associate Producer Joan
Wells for their help in supporting this world premiere, and also to our generous Season Sponsors – Ken and Dottie Reiner and the Ackerman Family/Evalyn M. Bauer Foundation.
If you’re a current season subscriber, we hope you’ve renewed for our spectacular 2011-2012 Season – it’s
not too late – visit our subscription table in the lobby. Of course, we’re also taking orders for new subscriptions! Please also note our upcoming fundraising events mentioned on pages 4 and 8 of this program. Your
support is always appreciated.
Thank you for being a part of the MTW family and for your support of our mission. Enjoy the show!

Summer of Love takes place in and around San Francisco’s
Golden Gate Park and the Haight-Ashbury, 1967.
There will be one fifteen-minute intermission.
About Summer of Love
Welcome back in time…
As I was creating and working on Summer of Love, people would ask what the show was
about. My answers would range from “It’s about a tribe of hippies in the park who…” to
“A runaway bride looks to make her own kind of music while searching for…” These were
descriptions really - nutshell outlines of the plot and course of action in the play. So what
is the show really about?
You could say it’s about peace and love. The counter-cultural revolution in the HaightAshbury was certainly about love and harmony, proponents often living together in communes while working toward the greater good of humanity. You could say it’s about the
growing anti-war movement, and pushing to stop America’s involvement in the escalating
conflict in Vietnam. You could also say it’s about the psychedelic drug experience and
learning to lose inhibitions and expand your mind. You could also say it’s about inclusion,
and learning to accept new people, ideas, and understanding into your lives.
But wrapped inside all of those ideas, Summer of Love is about family. Not our biological
families, but our everyday family. As we move through life, we gather friends around us
who become the family that we choose to stand by and support. These are the people we
hold close. These are the people we hold dear in our lives. These are the people that
make life worth living. This is what Summer of Love is about.

REINER READING SERIES
staged readings of great musicals
The first three shows of the Reiner Readings Series, BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS, AS THOUSANDS CHEER and SUGAR were great successes, and established the Series as a great way
to be introduced to lesser-known works of the musical theater canon. We invite you to
join us for the final show in the series’ inaugural season:
Directed by RICHARD ISRAEL
Musical Direction by DANIEL THOMAS
This absurdist look at society and conformity is one of Broadway’s most notable
flops, but features an amazing score by
Sondheim, including “There Won’t Be
Trumpets,” “Everybody Says Don’t” and
the title song.

MUSICAL THEATRE WEST LEGACY SOCIETY
If Musical Theatre West has been an important part of your life, you can help create this same experience for future
generations by including us in your estate plans. Leaving a bequest will ensure that musical theater remains a vital part
of the Southern California arts community.
The Musical Theatre West Legacy Society honors individuals who, by including MTW in their long-range financial and
estate plans, choose to create a personal legacy and help to ensure MTWÊs financial strength for future generations. Gifts
include bequests via a will or living trust, life insurance and retirement plan assets. Future plans can include gift annuities and charitable trusts as well. These gifts may entitle you to an estate tax deduction equal to the amount of the gift,
thus reducing your taxable estate. In most instances federal estate tax regulations place no limit on the amount of your
estate tax deduction for qualifying gifts, thus encouraging bequests made to a charitable cause such as MTW.
Whatever the size of your estate, a bequest allows you to determine how your assets will be disbursed after your lifetime.
A charitable gift to Musical Theatre West through a bequest may also reduce probate costs and increase the assets you
leave to your loved ones. If you have remembered Musical Theatre West in your estate plans and wish to be honored as
a member of the Legacy Society, please contact Paul Garman at (562) 856-1999 x227 so your name can be added to the
growing list of patrons who are joining the Legacy Society.

Welcome to a groovy trip back in time to the
SUMMER OF LOVE! I’m sure many of us can remember that exciting time, and all of us will
recognize the songs, which I’m sure will have you
dancing in the aisles! We’re truly pleased to
bring this World Premiere to you and glad that
you’ve joined us today.
On another note, let me take a moment to tell
you about the MTW Guild, a group of dedicated
volunteers, I am very proud to represent, who
give generously of their time and talent to help
assure your MTW entertainment experience is a
great one. During this, our 58th season, the MTW
Guild will strive to make your trip to the theater
and the time you spend with us special. Our
volunteers are the men and women who welcome
you to the theater, give you your program, and
show you to your seat. We work behind the
scenes in the office, feed the cast, help with
costumes, and provide you with some wonderful
shopping opportunities at our Gift Booth. Profits
from our Gift Booth provide funds to help support our Education and Outreach Programs.
Please stop by and take a look at some of our
lovely merchandise. Your purchases provide an
opportunity for us to bring live entertainment to
youth in the area.
If you love the theater, enjoy working with others
and have some time to spare, please consider
joining us as a member of the MTW Guild. Stop
by and pick up a membership brochure in the

Musical Theatre West Footlighters
SUMMER OF LOVE - words we all can relate to,
summer being the season of warmth and fun, love
being something that we all cherish. But wait! Is
“Summer of Love” about warm weather and fond
feelings for someone else? Or is it about a misguided
bride who finds her way to Haight-Ashbury right
before her wedding? And how will it end? Happily
ever after, or not? While I won’t reveal the plot, you
should know that it will be difficult not to dance in the
aisles with the music from the ‘60s that is enjoyed by
all. For example: tunes from Burt Bacharach, Jefferson Airplane, the Mamas and the Papas, and Blood,
Sweat and Tears.
Footlighters is a support group for Musical Theater
West, and our upcoming special event is entitled “A
Celebration of the Great American Songbook”. It will
be held right here in the Carpenter Center with seating on the stage. You will be served a lovely dinner
with wine, and a sing-along will follow with some of
your favorite Broadway tunes. Reservations are required and may be made through by calling Nancy
Koblensky at (562) 430-4478. Ticket price is $60.

Footlighters invites you to come to this very special
event and support our Educational/Outreach Programs as well as our Scholarship Program.
Scholarships are a large part of what Footlighters
does, and auditions are going on this month. The
winners will perform at Music in The Morning on June
18th, and we’d love to have you come and hear the
talented singers and dancers of high school age who
wish to pursue a career in musical theater. Two of the
scholarship students will be able to participate in the
National High School Musical Theater Awards held in
New York in June.
Now, let’s sit back, relax and take ourselves back in
time to the love generation.
Feelin’ groovy!

to songs from “O Tannenbaum” to “Mele Kalikimaka.” Loads of fun for the
whole family!
February 10-26, 2012 April 13-29, 2012
One of the all-time great musicals,
featuring “The Impossible Dream," one
of the all-time great standards. At the
height of the Spanish Inquisition, author
Miguel de Cervantes is imprisoned
and uses the story of knight-errant
Don Quixote to defend himself. Full
of indelible characters and a
beautiful Latin-tinged score, Man
of La Mancha ran for six years on
Broadway and won the Tony for
Best Musical.
