Hang on – it is going to be an awesome 2016!
“Our most equitable business relationships will always be based on mutual trust and respect. We don't just build Hotels...we build partnerships with like-minded investors and entrepreneurs who prefer to enjoy the success of their business ventures and look forward to the next one. “ Ron Seagraves, Superintendent , MC Hotel Construction 4th Qtr.. 2015—2nd Edition From the Desk of Rob….. By Rob Willard, President In October I attended “The Annual Lodging Conference” in Phoenix, AR. The headline reads “good times here to stay”. All signs point to the industry being in a state of bliss through 2017. Quote from PKF Hospitality Hang on- it is going to be an Research at the conference “Our awesome 2016! view is this [upswing in the lodging business] will persist through 2017 and we are fairly confident it will extend into 2018,” said Mark Woodworth, Senior Managing Director, PKF Hospitality Research. “We are seeing above long-run occupancy levels which will lead to strong profit growth through 2017, enough to offset increasing labor costs. It is a wonderful time to be in the hotel business.” “Hang on – it is going to be an awesome 2016!” Leadership Scorecard GM of the 3nd Quarter 2015– Jessalyn Younce I was born and raised in Troy, Ohio. My fiancé and I have 7 children between the two of us; 3 of which are my own. Their ages are 17, 15, 14, 13, 10, 8 & 6. So you can imagine, we are very busy! We recently inherited an adorable Pomeranian named Scooter. Our favorite pastime is anything outdoors hiking, camping and boating. I have worked in the hotel industry since the age of 16. I started as a front desk associate and housekeeper. I graduated from Edison State Community College as a Medical Lab Tech but quickly realized I wanted to remain in the hospitality field. I knew I wanted to be a GM one day. I guess hospitality runs through my blood since my mother has been in the hotel/hospitality industry for 25 years. She was my inspiration to pursue this career path. DOS of the 3nd Quarter 2015- Inside this issue: Kim Tolbert DEVELOPMENT I have been in the hospitality industry for 20 years. As a kid I grew up in Ypsilanti, Michigan, near Ann Arbor. I have lived in Saint Louis for almost 7 years (moved to be with my wife who was doing her clinicals, at SLU Hospital.). We live next to Tower Grove Park and most days you can find me “wrangling” my 9 ½ yr. old Welsh Corgi, Una, at the park. Tell us something that not many people know about you? I have always had an interest in technology, and IT professions specifically, but have only been pursuing this career for the past 5 years. Previous to that, I trained cooks and held other culinary positions. I decided that food was more of a hobby than a career. I have a strong (and sometimes expensive) interest in Sci Fi and Fantasy in any format it’s available. I love to travel, and have been to most of the contiguous US, Canada, Hawaii, and Japan. Get to know our Corporate Staff….. The craziest thing I’ve done involves my move to St Louis. After preparing for my move, the weather at the end of 2008 included what turned out to be a truly epic blizzard. Since I did not have a place to stay, I decided I would brave the storm and drive overnight to make it to Missouri. I made it to the southern edge of Minnesota as it was turning dark, and the radio station announced the storm was intensifying to the point that they would be taking What is the craziest thing you snow plows off of the roads, and have ever done? closing the interstates. I ended up driving through Iowa with roughly 50 ft of visibility and 30+ mph winds howling around my vehicle. I somehow made it in to St. Louis unharmed (and VERY cold), but in hindsight could have had a very different outcome. Page 2 IT TIPS On the old game show "Password," the host whispered a word to contestants, who then gave clues to celebrities. The first to guess correctly advanced to the Lighting Round. The loser went home with a year's supply of car wax. The legacy of "Password" lives on, but in the 21st century version, hackers use tidbits they know about your employees to guess their passwords. The winner gets the grand prize: access to the information on your system. What can you do to help send hackers home with the car wax? There's no one-sizefits-all approach to password security, but here are some easyto-implement suggestions. around your office is still likely to yield a staffer or two with passwords readily visible on their desks. Fraudsters look for the low -hanging fruit. If you spot a sticky note on a colleague's computer, speak up about this obvious vulnerability. The better password isn't a word at all. Up there with "password" and "qwerty" in the Hack Me Hall of Fame are passwords that are short common terms like team names, dog breeds, dates, and other easy-to-guess options. They're risky on two fronts. First, an up-to-no-good insider will take one look at the screensaver of your adorable sheepdog Ralphie and immediately try "sheepdog" and "Ralphie." Second, common There's one in every crowd. words are particularly susceptible Employees are more attuned to to dictionary attacks, the tech security these days, but a walk equivalent of the million monkeys Safety at a million typewriters that systematically try every conceivable word until they hit pay dirt. When creating passwords, remind your employees to skip those obvious choices. This is one time when good spelling can lead to bad results. every day." Careful companies layer in mandatory numbers, symbols, or cases, making "iW2r+ran+ped!" an even stronger option. If your business requires employees to change passwords periodically, the Ace Frehley wannabe can simply move on to the next line of the song. (We won't regale you.) Bypass passwords and encourage passphrases. Longer passwords are better, of course, but they can be harder to remember. So how can businesses balance security and practicality? Consider the passphrase as an alternative. Hackers aren't likely to guess a nonsense word like "iwtraranaped," but the guy in the next office who plays in a Kiss cover band on weekends will instantly remember "I want to rock and roll all night and party Working together to provide a safe environment On September 1, 2015 safety bingo was launched at all of the hotels.
