Benefits Found In Your Paychecks
Benefits
Found
In
Your
Paychecks
The
purpose
of
this
document
is
to
help
you
to
understand
the
benefits
you
receive
because
of
the
collective
bargaining
agreements
between
IATSE
and
the
local
employers.
First,
let
us
define
some
terms
for
you
and
what
their
purpose
is:
Federal
and
State
Taxes:
1) Federal
Income
Tax
–
This
is
your
overall
taxes
levied
by
the
Federal
Government
on
your
Gross
income.
2) FICA
–
This
is
a
tax
levied
by
the
Federal
Government
to
pay
for
Social
Security.
It
is
collected
by
the
IRS
and
administered
was
created
by
Federal
Insurance
Contributions
Act
(FICA).
The
tax
rate
as
of
2010
is
12.4%
on
the
first
$106,800
of
earnings.
For
W2
employees,
the
employee
pays
6.2%
and
the
employer
pay
the
other
6.2%.
For
1099
employees,
they
pay
the
full
12.4%
amount.
The
benefit
of
being
a
W2
employee
is
you
get
a
6.2%
benefit
of
additional
pay
because
you
don’t
have
to
pay
the
employer
share.
(eg.
if
you
make
$500
as
a
1099
contractor,
you
pay
$62
in
taxes
to
the
government.
As
a
W2
employee
you
pay
$31
and
your
employer
pays
$31
so
your
gross
pay
is
actually
$531)
3) Medicare
–
This
is
a
tax
levied
by
the
Federal
Government
to
pay
for
Medicare
benefits.
It
is
collected
by
the
IRS.
The
rate
as
of
2010
is
2.9%.
As
with
FICA,
if
you
are
W2
the
employer
pays
half
your
medicare
(1.45%)
so
you
make
more
money.
