How Does Our Garden Grow? Jackson teachers Lois Wittmann, Laurie Oddo, and Lori Salzman recently received a Jericho Educational Foundation grant to start a school garden. Planting boxes were set up for class projects at each grade level. Fifth graders and their kindergarten buddies planted a variety of bulbs that will bloom in the spring. Classes planted tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses. They learned about how bulbs develop, how they are different from other types of plants and what they need to grow. Students used bulb planters to dig holes, put in plant food, planted each bulb, filled the holes and watered them. They used bone meal to enrich the soil and provide nutrition for the plants. These bulbs, once they bloom, will be used for a fourth grade unit on plants. The tulips are an especially valuable visual for students to learn about parts of the plant. The other gardens will include herbs, the Three Sisters, a butterfly garden, vegetables, and a pumpkin patch. The intention of the gardens is to bring the curriculum to life and provide students with a rewarding hands-on gardening experience. The smiles and excitement of fifth graders and their buddies reinforced the success of this wonderful activity. We can't wait for the spring!! They then participated in a pre-reading activity that addressed key themes in the book. Due to overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, classes met together again after reading the first half of the book. Students worked in groups, reflecting on what they learned and discussing key elements of the book, especially the significant role that culture plays in our identity. The final collaborative activity will take place in December. While drinking Chai tea, students will address ways to help Greg Mortenson with his mission to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. ➤ Sarah Tract and Bari Yorke participate in a pre-reading activity that addresses key themes in “Three Cups of Tea”. Goals Workshop (continued from page 1) District Goals Committee members (from left) Gina Levy, Ilene Joachim, Barbara Krieger, Harold Wanderman and Kevin Brodsky work with facilitator Adam Winnick on answering one of the three questions posed to groups. and alumni to receive further information. Once all the input has been evaluated and considered, a revised set of goals will be presented in draft to the District Goals Committee and community for review. The intention of the district is to present the plan to the Board of Education for adoption at a future Board meeting. “This is the first in a series of 3 ➤ budget, expenditure and revenue history and projections. After the overview, Mr. Grishman outlined the skills and content areas that educators believe students will need to learn in order to successfully compete in the 21st Century workforce. At the completion of the presentation, workshop participants were divided into small groups. In an effort to gather community input to assist the district in formulating new long-term district goals, the following questions were posed: 1. What makes a good school great? 2. If you could implement two innovations, what would they be? 3. What strategies and/or efficiencies would ensure that high quality public education, in Jericho, remains financially sustainable? After one and a half hours of committee work, participants reassembled and facilitators from each group presented an outline of their discussions. Mr. Grishman thanked all for their input in this initial phase of the goalsetting process, and reported that facilitators would meet to draft a summary of the information gathered and present it to central administration. Some of the next steps in this process will include meetings with students opportunities to gather input from various constituencies to help us put together a new set of district goals,” explains Jericho Superintendent of Schools Hank Grishman. “We look forward to reflecting on the information we receive in an effort to formulate goals that will guide our students toward a bright and successful future.” December 2009 Jericho School News Jericho High School Recognizes One hundred forty-six current Jericho High School seniors are among the 276 Jericho High School students who recently received notification by The College Board of Advanced Placement Scholar Awards.
