Despite its great success
the Brazilian New Year’s
Eve festival did not take
place last year. Now it is
back, pronouncing the bigbiggest and most multifaceted
edition ever. We had a chat
with Alok and Ekanta from
the organization team.
After the last UP festival
you took a break. I guess
you drew new strength and
got some new inspirations?
Indeed, we did! The time had
come for a break, as the festival
had grown exponentially during
the last editions. Of course we
love to see this development
– but at the same time we felt
like maxing out our capacities.
We set a high standard for the
festival and we were afraid to
lose this standard. So we
took a year off and redefined our formula.
One of the big changes will
be the separation of the Chill
Out and the Palco Paralello,
which shared the same space
last year. The Palco Paralello
was introduced in 2006 as a
stage for large live concerts
with many people on stage.
As this area became more
and more popular among
the visitors with more and
more great bands playing,
we decided to make it an
independent stage. A second
thing is that we are paying
more and more attention to
the environmental aspects of
the festival and its sustainabisustainabi
lity. That‘s why we improved
our whole infrastructure, the
water system, the human
waste and garbage recycling.
This recycling generates an
income we can invest in
social projects and workshops
for the local population.
Brazilian culture is a party
culture. We realized that
travellers arriving from
far-away countries are
looking for a „complete Brazil
experience”, with all the
tropical and exotic aspects.
During the next festival we
want to take it to the next
level. For instance there will
be an off-season “psychedelic
carnival”, something very
typical for the region of Bahia.
There will be native Indian
groups, Capoeira sessions at
the beach, and so on.
Speaking about the local
population: How do you
include traditional BraziliBrazili
an culture in the festival?
Well, Brazilian culture is full
of the joys of life, essentially
the musical bandwidth from 4
to 6 floors. We put lots of effort
in creating something like six
festivals in one, a perfect blend
of contrast and harmony - from
Trance to Chillout, from live
bands to urban grooves, from
well-known sounds to new
discoveries. Have a peek at our

asked to play longer sets, to

UP is well-known as a
very international event,

As a matter of fact, this is
another aspect of our new
formula! As we love travelling
ourselves we know how
hard it can be to arrive in a
foreign country, especially if
you don’t speak the language.
So we got our own travel
department running, we can
provide all the logistics for
international travellers. In this
way, we are able to provide
fair prices, English-speaking
staff, easy-going travel. If you
arrive at Salvador airport, the
best place to arrive for the
festival, just look out for our
info stand! As we know that
many international travellers
and even Brazilian visitors
would like to see more of BraBra
zil than just UP, we also offer
guided tours after the festival.

Nach einer Pause im letzten
Jahr ist die paradiesischpsychedelische Postkartenidylle
des Universo Paralello zurück.
Das Sylvesterfestival am brasibrasi
lianischen Traumstand kündigt
so einige Neuerungen an. Mit
dem Palco Paralello geht neben
dem Chillout nun eine eigene
Bühne für große Live-Bands an
den Start. Außerdem wurde das
Festival unter ökologischen GeGe
sichtspunkten weiter optimiert.
Musikalisch bleibt der Psytrance
Floor das Herz des Universo
Paralello, wer auf der Suche
nach Abwechslung ist wird aber
ebenfalls fündig - sei es auf
einem der anderen Dancefloors
oder im umfangreichen, typisch
regionalen Kulturangebot. Das
Universo Parallelo besitzt mittmitt
lerweile eine komplett eigene
Reiselogistik und bietet interinter
nationalen Besuchern Transfers
vom und zum Flughafen sowie
sogar geführte Touren nach dem

Psychedelic Trance is a big thing in Israel, very big! Sometimes it seems like everybody loves it. From Taxi drivers to soldiers,
from 50-year-old ravers to kids too young to have an ID, everyone is listening to the once underground music. Which
nowadays is a well-accepted genre in Israel, one which has come far compared to the “hard days” in the 90`s when it was
branded as something very bad both by the police and the press. Artists like Infected Mushroom, Skazi and even relatively
new ones like Ace Ventura and Captain Hook have managed to push Psychedelic Trance into mainstream (television,
press, big sponsored events and clubs). But mainstream attention didn’t mean the death of the Psy underground scene.
New promoters sprout constantly to
organise small and truly underground
nature parties around the country. Some are
promoted and some only use word of mouth
advertising. Some won't even charge you
an entrance fee at the “door” but will walk
around with a hat later, for you to decide
how much you put in it. Driving down south
to the desert or heading up to the green
north will lead you to some fun times.
The spirit is still here, alive and kicking! In
the last few years some of those smaller
productions have grown big while showing
impressive production values (such as
Groove Attack, Hasamba and a few more).

in clubs. Whether it is in the “Block” or the
“Comfort 13”, Tel Aviv always has at least
one Psytrance party almost every night of
the week (other major cities also
have regular PsyTrance events in
clubs such as the “Baraka” in
Beer Sheva and the “Esso” in
Rishon Le Zion).

therings in the mountains and regular full
moon parties in Pokhara organized by Hatti
Baba (Swiss man who is single handedly
responsible for promoting Trance here).
In the 90s till 2000 the Goa scene was
quite big, but the civil war that raged from
2000-2006, almost destroyed the Trance
scene and the spirit. After, Trance got its life
back again. In 2007 Shanti Jatra festival
was a big success and continued until 2011.
Then, Universal Religion festival became
the most successful festival in Nepal. DespiDespi
te the media and government denouncing
it, the organisers sustained in organising
it. The festival attracts thousands of people
from all over the world. This year Universal
religion will be held in a historic and
beautiful mountain town called Bandipur,
April, 26-29.
In last five years there has been huge propro
gress in the Psytrance community. Especially
attracting foreigners from Goa, rich kids
from India and the Middle East to festivals
and underground parties. Also the sound
systems and decorations are comparatively
much better than 6 years ago.
Most of the underground parties are
organised by travellers themselves during
October and April in Pokhara. There have
been some scams, where they collected
enjoy them both.

Moksha (“Indigo Festival”), TFN and Doof
(“Doof Festival”) the stream of international
artists brought here to showcase their music

was brought by the freaks who came from
Goa to visit Nepal or who came for their
Indian visa

There are two Trance music producers in
Nepal. Aseem who produces twilight and
Chill and will also perform in Finland, LatLat
via, Switzerland and Germany this summer,
Thailand and Australia in winter and
Smoking Shiva who does Forest
sounds. Popular Trance djs
are Kranti, Vibe, Nishan
and Mantra drops.

since 2008, and has been decorating almost
all the big festivals. Mandala beats from
Thamel do decorations as well. Most Trance
fashion clothes are made in Nepal too.
Beer is heavily taxed and generally expenexpen
sive but travellers do come for smoking not
for beer anyway.

Whole Thamel (tourist area in
its natural beauty. Trekking around Mt.
Everest, Annapurna, Helembu and Lantang
are a life time experience. The Langtang trek
is a much cheaper trek than Annapurna and
Everest treks and equally beautiful. There
are new trekking routes open in eastern
and western Nepal, which are very remote
and untouched by any kind of commercial
enterprise.

High-octane grooves, dynamic changes in tempo, quotes from Dubstep to Electro,
state-of-the-art production quality… Captain Hook has it all. Re-inventing the original
idea of Progressive, he’s currently one of the most exciting producers of our scene.
You’ve been a part of Quantize in the
past. What is the difference between working solo and having a project partner?
The difference when you’re working with
another person is mainly the compromise:
Sound, structure, melody, and basically the
essence of the song. Don’t get me wrong,
I love to collaborate, but I also cherish the
private moments I have in the studio, it’s when
you’re 100% into it and letting yourself go
with the music.
We heard that there’s a remix album in
the making. What can you tell us about it?
There’s a double remix album in the making,
I’m actually super stoked about it since the
range of producers is so wide, from Psy Chill
Out to Glitch Hop to Dubstep to the other side
of the grid that stands for Electro House, Progressive House, and Progressive Trance. Some
of the producers are: Gaudi, Darth & Vader,
ill.Gates, Perfect Stranger, Phony Orphants,
Ace Ventura & Zen Mechanics, as well as the
promising new act Coming Soon, also you can
expect two fresh remixes from me on Perfect
Stranger and Sub 6.
How did your way of producing music
change over the years?
The main change was “less is more”. Instead
of producing a song with 50 channels I try to
work with 15 these days, giving each sound
the attention and design it needs, inserting
3 sick automations instead of writing 3 lines.
I’m a minimal fan, always have been, from the
TECHNOLOgy
days of Interzone and the first Iboga releases.

Looking at the lineups of the festivals going
noticeon at the moment, there is one very notice
able thing: The lists underneath the word
“Live” grow longer and longer whereas those
referring to “DJ” become shorter and shorter.
Apparently, running a live act is the new being

of our scene being high as probably never
before with more and more great new music
being produced every day!
