Smart Tracking - Sunshine Coast Airport
Smart Tracking AIRPORT ‘Major Airport of the Year 2011’ FACT SHEET 1 AIRPORT What is Smart Tracking and how it will work at the Sunshine Coast Airport? BACKGROUND Sunshine Coast Airport, working with Jetstar, is investigating new technology to improve services and the reliability of aircraft arriving into the airport and reduce disruptions to passengers. Smart Tracking, otherwise known as Required Navigation Performance (RNP) uses flight management systems and satellites to allow more precise arrivals along flight paths into the airport, particularly during poor weather conditions. By improving the reliability of services at Sunshine Coast Airport, it is believed that Smart Tracking will present another opportunity to attract new business and stimulate the Sunshine Coast economy while also giving certainty to passengers in respect to their travel plans. BENEFITS OF SMART TRACKING The airport, industry, Sunshine Coast community and visitors to the region will benefit from Smart Tracking thanks to: • F ewer diversions to Brisbane Airport during weather conditions that present poor visibility DECEMBER 2012 SMART TRACKING ON THE SUNSHINE COAST Sunshine Coast Airport is working to introduce Smart Tracking to the Sunshine Coast in 2013. While Jetstar will use RNP procedures initially, other airlines are expected to adopt the technology in the future. The airport is currently working with government and industry to finalise the design of runway approaches and has commissioned an independent environmental assessment to analyse any changes resulting from the introduction of the technology. INFORMING THE COMMUNITY While investigations are underway, Sunshine Coast Airport has been liaising with elected representatives, business and resident groups, including the Sunshine Coast Airport Community and Aviation Forum to ensure community members are kept informed.
