If you build the ultimate sports car, you will have enthusiasts standing at your door to buy it. Likewise, many of those who waited patiently for their chance at the ultimate car will use it as a launching point to build Katech fills the void between upon, increasing the performance factory stock and fanatical potential of their personal ride. By Andy Bolig Is Never Enough 20 CORVETTE enthusiast Katech knows these people well. They have been intimately aware of Corvette’s performance potential since they started building racing engines for the factory C5-R Corvette Racing team. The durability and performance they’ve built into every C5-R and C6.R engine has helped keep Corvette Racing at the head of the pack and has cemented a great relationship with the team and crew at Corvette Racing. Recently, Katech Performance has sought a similar relationship with the owners and enthusiasts of street-driven Corvettes by doing what they do best, building upon the potential nestled between the frame rails of every late-model Corvette. While their racing engines are proven winners on the track, Caleb Newman, vice president and director aftermarket operations at Katech, is quick to point out that the needs of a street engine are quite different from its full-race counterpart. That is why Katech Engines expanded into Katech Performance. The same folks who assemble the racing engines wrap their hands around the street-going version, but these are designed for maximum performance for the long haul, not just 24 hours. Designed–a word describing all they do to ensure that every engine carries the same durability and maximum performance potential, whether found on the street or the track. Committed to finding out what works, what doesn’t and why, every proposed engine package finds its way on one of Katech’s seven test cells to prove if it has the right stuff to wear the Katech logo. The ability to simulate where the rubber meets the road, coupled with the most modern testing and engineering techniques, ensures that CORVETTE enthusiast 21 each engine package works to its fullest potential and just as described. From that starting point, Katech Performance was able to devise several packages to fit their customer’s needs. Starting with the proven LS7 engine, Katech Performance offers their Attack line of engines. The Sneak Attack starts off the line with a “sleeper” engine with an 8,000-rpm redline. The Street Attack engine package maintains compression at 11:1 and is the perfect choice for high-power daily drivers. The Track Attack goes all out with 12-14:1 compression and is designed for off-road/track use only. For the forcedinduction crowd, an Air Attack LS7 engine features a lower compression ratio and a camshaft designed for that specific purpose. Our feature Z06 just received components for a Street Attack LS7 package–we had the opportunity to experience its new-found potential firsthand. From the minute you press the start button, there’s no doubt that this package was assembled with performance in mind. The exhaust note through those Corsa pipes exudes power and aggressiveness. The Street Attack package will boost 1 More than just a pretty face, the LS7 gets treated to years of experience and engineering under those Katech Performance valve covers. Color matching is a trademark of Katech Performance and even flows over onto some of the aftermarket parts that Katech offers like the belt tensioner. out for this full width, carbon fiber version. Other than that, factory-fresh was just fine so far as aesthetics were concerned. 2 The little ducktail spoiler on the rear of the Z06 was swapped 3 The distinctive appearance of Katech’s engines is 1 2 3 2 2 C O R V E T T E e n t h u s i a st horsepower in excess of 600 and give over 570 lb/ft of torque at your disposal. Interestingly, while driving around Katech’s homeland of Clinton Township, Michigan, we noted that the performance envelope was expanded, but the modest side of daily driving, where compromise is usually made, didn’t suffer noticeably from the increased power. Granted, you won’t be keeping a low profile while driving one of these packages, but if that concerned you, chances are you weren’t looking for more horsepower anyway. On top of the hard parts sealed into the crankcase, Katech Performance also combines exhaust and induction packages depending upon the customer’s request, and also offers body modifications to help make your Corvette stand out from the crowd. They offer a front splitter, rear spoiler or wing, and a world challenge louvered hood to give your Corvette that racing appearance. The Victory Red Z06 that we experienced during our time at Katech went so far as to have their full width carbon fiber spoiler installed, but kept to the factory original skins–making its statement in deed, not appearance. To complete the entire package, Katech offers special packages featuring emphasized by the coil relocation kit and the Katech Performance valve covers. Additionally, you can see the ceramic coated Kook’s headers that Katech offers with their engine packages. 4 Katech Performance has spent considerable time validating camshafts for their packages and offers a variety of profiles according to the engine’s particular needs. 5 The LS7 head is one of the best breathing designs GM has ever produced and is used exclusively on the Katech Performance Attack series engines with great success. 4 5 C O R V E T T E e n t h u s i ast 23 a Ron Davis radiator with an additional oil cooler and, to make the most of the Z06’s transmission, an RPM Transmission’s Stage IV upgrade is available as well as a shifter for added performance. Even though each package is custom tailored to the customer’s request, every one done by Katech Performance gets a special serial number plaque and documentation, verifying its origin. You can either enjoy your additional performance wrapped in the factory furnishings, like our test drive vehicle, or you can opt for the added elegance of Caravaggio’s handstitched interior parts to set off the inside of your ride. For additional braking, a set of Brembo brakes can be added to the package to keep the balance of power between go and whoa. With 505 horsepower available from the factory, one might ask why someone would feel compelled to put more horsepower under the hood of their Z06. Much like that desire to own the ultimate sports car, their urge for more tends to take them on a voyage from factory stock to being fanatical about horsepower. And thankfully for them, tuners such as Katech Performance are there to help them along the way. n 6 Each piston is tailored to the application and are hardcoating anodized, forged units, which are up to 50 grams lighter than stock units for the LS7. 8 Katech has a dyno cell designated mainly for valvetrain evaluation and testing. They offer beehivestyle springs due to their being consistently more stable due to the reduced natural frequencies and lower mass at the top of the spring. This makes them a great choice, even on the more radical camshafts. with a Ron Davis radiator and plumbed with Goodridge lines. 7 The LS7 engine makes use of high-tech metals like titanium and, in true Katech fashion, they go one step further. To ensure ultimate reliability, Katech replaces the split-bushings used in the LS7’s connecting rod with a solid bronze bushing for the additional strength. 9 An oil cooler adapter is designed to fit snugly onto the side of the block and is used in conjunction 6 7 2 4 C O R V E T T E e n t h u s i ast 9 10 For Your Information Katech Performance 24324 Sorrentino Ct. When we were introduced to the car, they were just putting the finishing touches on it–like adding the window decal. There were several Z06s in their shop that were delivered to Katech and still had the plastic on the seats. 8
