BATTLE OF THE SEXES

Equality of the sexes has been a major dispute in the past several decades. The recent surfacing of several anti-feminism twitter accounts like
“Meninist” (a parody of “feminist”), “WomanAgainstFeminism” (also a parody, despite the account’s name), and “The Happy Feminist” provide multiple views on the idea of equality. For those who don’t already know, the definition of “feminism” as defined by Merriam Webster is: “the theory of
the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.” Those who equate feminism with man-eating could stand to learn a thing or two.
Here at Oak Hills, there is still one glaring gender inequality. More recently is the lack of female presence on the spirit squad. Traditionally, the
spirit squad has been all boys, countering the equally traditional all girl cheerleading squad. However, in the past two years, boys have been admitted
to be part of the cheerleading squad. An involved student and animated feminist, Carly Miller, brought this to my attention. When asked her opinion
on the lack of girls on the spirit squad, she replied, “I think it’s a completely outdated “rule” to not let girls on the spirit squad. There’s no reason girls
can’t have just as much spirit as the boys who lead the cheering section.”
Shortly after the famous yearly Elder-Oak Hills basketball game, Miller tweeted out, “Petition to get girls on the spirit squad next year. We are
not, CANNOT be exclusive. Save that for Elder. “It’s tradition” is no excuse.” One particularly intellectual student replied, “sike.”
While there is no official rule stating that girls cannot be on the spirit squad, it seems that girls are discouraged from participating. The spirit
squad is unofficially run through Student Council Executive Board, or more specifically, Dennis Martin, a teacher at Oak Hills High School.
“The Athletic Department asked for a list of eight names at the beginning of the football season and said that only the eight people on the list were
allowed down on the football field,” Martin elaborated when asked about the lack of female spirit squad members. “I left it up to Michael Savage and
he nominated some other guys to be a part of the team.” Savage, a member of Executive Board, stated that, “there are no rules or requirements, I just
picked guys who wanted to do it.” However, there was slight tension in the room as a couple of the girls suggested that they were told to “get off the
field” and that they “weren’t allowed to do it.”
In Savage’s defense, he offered the first basketball game of the season to the girls, however, none of them stepped up. In this case, it doesn’t
become an issue of including the girls, but needing girls to participate. So what is the solution to this problem? With the concept of the spirit squad
being ruled by very loose guidelines (“all school rules apply”), it may be time to start having some requirements. No more haphazardly passing the
torch, allowing students to randomly select friends and having it purely based off of popularity.
THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING OAKETTES

The Oakettes dance team has been a very competitive dance team for over 55
years. Each year they impress the judges and audience with their amazing choreography and spectacular routines.The Oakettes perform at a variety of events through the
year, including pep rallies, basketball games, and football games, usually alongside
the marching band. Starting in January, the dancers began their competition season,
which includes an average of 5-10 competitions, two of which are hosted here in the
Oak Hills gymnasium.
But for the girls, this season is the moment they’ve been waiting for. The Oakettes have qualified to take on UDA Nationals in Florida. The team “that can never be
broken” says Oakette senior Savanna Bachler, will travel down in March for four days
in hopes that they come back with a National winning title. Words can not describe
how thankful the Oakettes are to be given this opportunity and to show just how much
their hard work has paid off.
Currently the Oakettes are ranked as the highest school Varsity dance team in the U.S and have returned home from competitions with a full
paid bid into The U.S Finals and many 1st place trophies. They plan to keep this winning streak going and leave the Highlanders proud.

OHHS SPORT

Boys Basketball
The Boys basketball team has had some tough battles out there this season. Most of the games have been fairly close in scores. Games to highlight are the
wins against Winton Woods 53-34 and Fairfield 49-47. Leading Scorers include Senior Caleb Cox (big hoss), sophomores Luke Rudy and Ryan Batte. The
team isn’t done yet though. “The team is coming together off the court, but we need to come together on the court and get us some wins,” said senior guard
Chris Flinchbaugh. Upcoming games include away at Hamilton on 2/13 and home vs. Colerain on the 2/20. Help the Highlanders bring home a victory by
being a part of the Red Sea.
Bowling
With a record of 8-3, the bowling team is fighting for first place in the GMC. Oak Hills currently has six team members ranked in the top 20 bowlers in the
league. An early highlight of their season was winning the Bearcats Classic in January. Rachel Hesse, a senior and two-time captain has been on the bowling team for four years. Senior, Rachel Shackelford “is a wonderful team player, has a great attitude and always gives it her all. She is a first year bowler who
is thriving,” said bowling coach, Hoernschmeyer. The bowling team finished its season against Seton at Western Bowl on February 12th and the boys squad
will finish against Elder at Western Bowl on February 19th.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is a fairly new sport at Oak Hills, as this year marks its third year. The season has been highlighted by runner-up finishes at Cincinnati Country
Day and Miamisburg. With three girls out due to injuries, the team is having to fight harder than ever. The girls have a big competion coming up at Mason.
Mason is one of the biggest competitors this year and the team plans on giving it all they have. “It’s going to take a team effort and determination to beat
them,” said Paige Rudy.

TS UPDATES
Swimming and Diving
Winning the Best of West four years in a row, the swimming and diving team is showing tremendous Highlander pride. “We’re growing as a team and developing really well,” said Coach Hunter. The boys have a record of 6-3 and the girls are currently 5-4. Freshman, Elizabeth Cron, is a diver with a strong
chance of qualifying for the state competition. On the swimming side, Sophomore, Jared Cox leads the way, competing in the Individual Medley and Butterfly. The Swimming and Diving team competed at the GMC meet last weekend and will begin competition in the state tournament next week.
Girls Basketball
The Girls basketball team has an overall record of 5-11. Leading scorers include Carlie Hulette, Rachel Royer and Molly Nieman. The team is young with
a lot of upside for next year, as they have huge talent and no seniors on the current team. “This year is our growing year, but we will fight through it together
and come out even stronger next year,” said Sophomore, Carlie Hulette. The team faces its final opponent of the season at Lakota West.
Wrestling
“If you haven’t seen this team in action, you are missing out on THE most exciting team this school has to offer!” Wresting coach Joe Campolongo says.
The Wrestling team is going strong with a 12-6 record and a 6th place ranking in the city. “This is the highest Oak Hills has been ranked in several seasons”, says Campolongo. Taking first place at the Edgewood Tournament back in December, the Wrestling team is leading the way for Highlander strong.
Dylan Roth is leading the team with a record of 31-6 and 21 pins. He has placed in the top 5 at every tournament and is 6 pins away from breaking the
school record. The wrestling team will have its last home match on Valentine’s day at 7:00 pm.

The true test of a relationship
is how it weathers storms. It is
easy to be enamored with our
significant others when they
are at their best, but when
the truth comes out, the ugly,
frizzy-haired truth, you know

my husband after our ill-fated
second Valentine’s Day meal,
which shall henceforth be
known as “The Big Garlic.”
I had been dating my future
husband for just over a year.
Our first Valentine’s Day had
all the awkward makings of a

I buy flowers? At this point,
I barely knew that we were
even dating; it was that place
in between goofy friendship
and romantic commitment, so
our first Valentine’s Day was
rather unremarkable.
Our second Valentine’s Day,
in my mind, was to be a
wonderful, romantic event.
We were set to spend the
evening together: quiet time,
just him and me. He had liked

being Italian, I knew that

through his taste buds, so I

I planned a delectable, robust pizza topped with garlic. Yes. just garlic, He liked
roasted garlic and pizza, so
why not combine my favorite
flavor with his favorite food?
I roasted four heads of garlic
in the oven (yes, you read
that right. FOUR giant white
bulbs of garlic) and put them
all atop my homemade pizza
crust with an olive oil sauce.
Sprinkle a hearty amount of
cheese, and viola! a meal that
tantalized the tastebuds.
He loved it! He ate half and
I ate half and we enjoyed every bit. Commence romantic
evening...
Until about an hour later.
Do you know what garlic
does to the digestive system? Compound that times
four heads of garlic (not to
mention the cheese), and
we certainly had an eruptive
evening. It was like a methane explosion: fields of cows
could not have generated the
methane we produced that
evening. We laughed and
farted, farted and laughed...
and that was when I knew I
had a winner. Any man that
can withstand an evening
of gas, without shame or
embarrassment, could take
any of the multitude of embarrassing situations I would

I was shocked to

us up, from sparkling grape juice to

was a very enjoyable meal. Her dad

slick BMW, and we
got a first-class trip
over to the school,

THREE TAKES ON VALENTINES DAY

ON A TIGHT BUDGET?
Save a few dollars this Valentines day and spread the love with homemade gifts and romantic dates that won’t empty out your wallet. Valentine’s day doesn’t have to mean wasting money
on gifts and eating at expensive restaurants. It’s about expressing love to your valentine. The expenses for Valentine’s day tend to add up with the typical giant $40 teddy bear and fine dining, but
there are other deals and creativity that can help save that last dollar.
The deals are everywhere, finding them is the challenge. Instead of going to an overpriced restaurant, try something a little more simple. White Castle isn’t exactly a heart throb, but their
deals are when hosting a “Love Castle” for the special occasion. A meal for two will cost under $10. They are also offering table side service and festive decorations, although, reservations are
required. Outback Steakhouse is also hosting a Valentine’s day sweet heart menu including a Bloomin Onion, two Outback Special Sirloins, and a Classic Cheesecake. Coupons for this deal are
available on their website. Outback is also offering a $10 gift card for future visits. Red Lobster is more of an elegant setting for a tight budget, offering a four course seafood meal for $15, while
P.F Chang’s is giving a four course Valentine’s dinner for two at $39.95. To hardly spend any money on a date, try something romantic at home, such as a living room picnic or a movie night.
Cooking for each other is sentimental and saves money from going out. All you need is ingredients and a date for your perfect at home dinner.
Hand making your own Valentine’s day gifts is the best way to save costing little to no money depending what you have around the house. Anywhere from a photo collage or a simple lollipop
that says “I’m a sucker for you” could be all thats needed. Something like a digital mixed tape would cost no money at all! Theres nothing more romantic than expressing love through music.
Burn a cd or send a tape through soundcloud or Mixtapes.fm. Make a “Date night” box with future date ideas. It won’t only save you money, but create plans for the rest of the month. Construct
a 100 reasons “why I love you” jar, for this all you’ll need is a jar and some paper. Write down all the reasons you love your valentine and put it in a jar, even better cut the paper into hearts. They
say food is the best way to a mans heart so take advantage of this and bake him something sweet. Cupcake mix is just below $3. Lovely ideas like these are all over the web with directions on how
to make creative original gifts, However, crafting isn’t always for everyone. Luckily the dollar store has all the necessary Valentine’s day decor. They are highly stocked on heart shaped candies,
cards, flowers, crafts, and chocolates all for one dollar individually. This will make great gifts for your loved ones and special trinkets for your friends.

WHAT TO DO
There are a variety of activities to do this Valentine’s Day. Options range from enjoying a nice dinner to watching basketball to hitting the slopes.
White Castle: “Love is back in the Castle.” Every year White Castle hosts a special night for couples. Reservations can be made online to have table side service and enjoy the decorative
restaurant. White Castles would also like to remind everyone to bring their cameras, it will surely be a night to remember. Guys keep in mind that White Castle is not always the way to a
lady’s heart, so be wise! If White Castle isn’t an ideal couples night, then Brio’s also has some Valentine’s day specials. They are offering smashing meals, like the Primavera Formaggio, Beef
Medallions with Black Pepper Shrimp, or Lobster and Shrimp Salad. Although it is a nice and romantic atmosphere, Brio’s may cost an arm and a leg. Thus, go dutch or grab dad’s credit
card.
So what about keeping it traditional? The old night out to the movies is still an option too. With the new seats in the theater it makes for a romantic and picturesque atmosphere.
There are a couple new releases coming out on or near Valentine’s day but make wise choices. Students must be at least 17 years of age in order to see R rated movies. Otherwise plan on
mom being the third wheel on your Valentine’s day date.
Now, it’s time for the adventurous couples who prefer a more athletic date. Since the lovey-dovey holiday is on a Saturday, couples can hit the slopes at Perfect North early and stay
late. The slopes will be open from 9:30am to 1:00am on Sunday. Warning: Be careful! If your significant other is not a skier, Center Stage is not the place to teach the basics. Hospitals don’t
offer any special deals on Valentine’s day. Feeling adventurous but not sure if Perfect’s is the right fit? How about a different winter activity? There is always the fantastic date of ice skating.
Picture it, trying to hold each other up while slowly gliding over solid ice. That sure sounds romantic, doesn’t it? Or maybe bowling is right up your alley. The whole point of bowling is to get
as many points as possible. Guys, if your lady isn’t averaging over 50 points, perhaps suggest a different activity. Maybe something that doesn’t keep score? Sky zone is always an option for
couples looking to have a little fun. There’s nothing better than jumping up and down for hours and leaving looking like the sprinklers went off. But hey, this may be an activity for couples
that have been dating for a while. No judgement dealt for how everyone looks after the jumping takes place.
For the sports fans, there’s no better date than going to watch some college basketball. The Bearcats will be at the Fifth Third Arena facing off against Tulane. Grab some tickets now,
because what’s more enchanting than a basketball game?
Most importantly...To all the singles out there, don’t worry. No one has forgotten about you! Anti-Valentine’s Day parties are great. Grab some single friends, make a lot of food,
and put in a nice empowering movie. These parties are easy to throw together. All that is required is a few single friends, some sweet snacks, and maybe a pinata full of chocolate (aka ladies
comfort food). Valentine’s are not needed in order to celebrate the dreaded holiday.
These are just a few ideas that could turn Valentine’s day into a memorable night. Guys, don’t forget that all women love chocolate and flowers. Ditch the stuffed animals and get her
some candy or invest the money into a nice dinner. And ladies, as much as the men tell you they like the tie you bought them, they don’t. Get them something better--they put up with all of
the drama and mood swings and deserve something better.

TRADITIONS
Whether it be going out on a romantic date with your special someone or sitting at home watching your favorite TV series on Netflix, each person has their own agenda for Valentine’s
Day. Back in the day, one of the traditions surrounding this romantic occasion was for a gentleman to write the name of his love on a heart-shaped piece of paper, pin it to his sleeve, and then
parade around in an act of hopeless romance, flaunting the name of his lucky girl. Talk about wearing your heart on your sleeve, right? Nowadays, although we don’t necessarily walk around with
the names of our boyfriends or girlfriends written on our foreheads with Sharpie, we do still maintain the romantic tradition of Valentine’s Day.
On the more cliche side of things, many couples can admit to showering their loved ones with flowers and chocolates to demonstrate their deepest affections. Usually, young ladies are
gifted with conservative displays of simple bouquets and small heart-shaped boxes of chocolates. However, we all know those relatively preposterous men who lavish their women with six dozen
roses and boxes of chocolates bigger than most of the women themselves.These men are generally the ones you hear about from beaming ladies, gasping here and there about all the wonderful

Don’t worry, this one is equally as gifty and equally as cliche. When it comes to Valentine’s Day, along with heart-shaped boxes and “I love you” notes, jewelry and expensive watches
dominate the gift-giving market. Couples are all giggles and squeals as their beloved reveals a diamond necklace or rolex watch during a romantic dinner. Along with these exclamations of delight is the sweet accompaniment of oohs and ahhs as lovers gaze passionately into each others’ eyes.
For those of us who don’t have a special someone to share this romantic holiday with, we prefer the traditions that include sitting on our couches, eating the candy meant for those pathetic, adorable couples, and watching Netflix. Although this seems a bit sad and solemn, it can be quite a blast. Because, after all, who would you rather spend a night with than yourself? You’re
obviously the best person out there, and don’t need someone to bathe you in chocolates when you can do it yourself.
Valentine’s Day is a versatile holiday; there are traditions for everyone to celebrate, whether you’re single and ready to mingle or in a relationship already. Whether it be a night out with your
special someone, or a night at home with the best person out there [yourself], Valentine’s Day is a special day to celebrate love and romance.
