Since 1989 NSL has strived to create consistency in rigging & lifting and crane related training worldwide by continually improving
our safety awareness materials, training courses and gaining approvals from nationally recognised bodies in every region where oil
and gas is being explored and produced.
In addition to our training centres in Aberdeen, Scotland and Lafayette, Louisiana, we have recently formed a series of robust
alliances with training providers around the globe. These specially selected companies now deliver NSL training courses and supply
NSL safety materials. This will allow our international clients to access our training at a more local level, which reduces problems
such as language difficulties and also reduces travel times and costs.

( practical )
In 2008/09 there were 35 fatalities, 4654 major injuries and a further 7065 injuries that caused the injured person to be
off work for over 3 days or more due to a fall from height.
This course is the foundation for a 3-part scheme, the elements of which can either be taken separately or run
consecutively.
WORK AT HEIGHT & RESCUE : 2 DAY
The safe packing and handling of cargo is a major part
of most industrial processes and due to the nature of
the work, can be hazardous. This 1-day training course
has been designed to supplement the eLearning course
and help raise the awareness of all personnel involved in
cargo handling operations, whether on or offshore and is
based on the latest revision of the “Best Practice for the
Safe Packing and Handling of Cargo to and from Offshore
Locations” issued by Oil & Gas UK.
( theory & practical )
This course is highly practical in nature. Delegates will experience the whole process of a safe and systematic approach
to working at height operations. The course includes the skills required to rescue / recover a colleague hanging in
suspension. This is an essential, if often overlooked, function as an unconscious casualty may have as little as 10
minutes to survive in this position.
WORK AT HEIGHT & RESCUE : SPECIFIC REFRESHER : 1 DAY
( theory & practical )
This course is designed to enable clients to provide refresher training for personnel who have attended a 2-day Work
at Height & Rescue Specific course who have been unable to use or train with an NSL rescue system within the last 12
months.
(ELEARNING MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO
PRACTICAL COURSE)
ABRASIVE WHEELS : 1 DAY
Although statistics show a decrease in fatalities from 2007/08, falls from height remain the most common cause of
workplace fatality.
Many of these accidents could have been avoided through awareness training and appropriate equipment selection.
Designed to impart the necessary knowledge to allow personnel to operate overhead travelling cranes safely, including
the safe handling of loads.
SAFE PACKING & HANDLING OF CARGO TO & FROM OFFSHORE LOCATIONS
This course is designed to introduce delegates to the principles and equipment involved in modern working at height
systems.
Note: When booking a Work at Height & Rescue course, please specify on which Rescue Kit you require training.
*Source: Health and Safety Commission - Statistics of workplace fatalities and injuries.

hazards and precautions, and the recommended documentation requirements.

Practical Training & Assessment
Working in confined spaces exposes employees to many potential hazards and risks, which, if not controlled, can have
fatal consequences. For that reason, only competent personnel should carry out work in confined spaces. Personnel
must have the knowledge to suitably control and mitigate the hazards presented to them; have a sound understanding
of the various roles undertaken in confined space work; and the knowledge and skills to implement emergency
procedures should the need arise. The correct and safe use of breathing apparatus can also be taught during this
course.

Competence
What is competence?
Competence is the ability to consistently perform activities to
a defined standard of efficiency and safety. It is a combination
of knowledge, ability, attitude and behaviour; derived from
training and experience, and verified through supervision and
assessment.
Competence
How is competence achieved and
maintained?
To start with, you need a Competence Assurance Process (CAP)

process or system should in other words, allow you to:

In structuring the process this way, personnel will realise their
own limitations and hopefully work within them as they progress
It should be noted that this is a continuous process which must
be maintained. It is NOT a one-off project or task that can be
through the stages.

NSL are now offering multi-disciplined Lifting Specialists /
Technical Authorities on long or short-term contracts.
They can also perform feasibility studies for proposed
modifications to plant and / or any changes to existing
operational procedures. This service includes mechanical
handling reviews on Oil & Gas installations during
construction, vessels and drilling rigs prior to them being
chartered by the operating company.
This is a specialist service dealing with all mechanical
handling and installation problems incorporating
everything from the initial offshore survey to the production
of the final implementation work pack.
The service includes detailed fabrication drawings,
structural calculations, procedural drawings, relevant text /
instructions and equipment lists.
Note: NSL can offer the services of expert riggers
who are experienced in design / fabrication / offshore
implementation and are available to go onsite to supervise
any installation or removal of plant and equipment.

Policies and Procedures
Sample Index & Who’s Adopted LECOP
Policies and procedures are essential documents, which
enable lifting operations to be carried out safely and
consistently. Policies set a company’s philosophies and
boundaries, whereas procedures detail the series of steps
that are needed to accomplish specific tasks. Together,
they provide a framework in which decisions can be
made.
For a company that operates on a small scale, they are
relatively easy to produce. However, if you are a company
that operates internationally, the development of these
documents can take a great deal of time and effort, and
can be very expensive to produce and implement.
It may seem like quite a complex task to complete
at first but if started, communicated, produced and
implemented correctly, then costs can be kept to a
minimum, development made easy and implementation
straightforward.
To assist, NSL can offer clients two options:
Option 1: Lifting Equipment
Control and Operation
Procedure (LECOP)
If you adopt this document, NSL will help you customise
it to suit your specific operation by adding in any extra
procedures you may already have in place or leaving out
any procedures that are not relevant. This is included in
the purchase cost of the document along with:
Initial production of the LECOP document with your
company logo / details inserted
Review of the client’s existing procedures and inclusion
of relevant / specific information into the LECOP
After the initial review / revision by the client, the
updating of the document, which would include client
comments / instructions
Return of the revised LECOP to client for approval and
final updating by NSL
NSL can also aid in the introduction and implementation
of the document at an additional cost, which is dependent
on the depth of the programme.
NOTE | Before proceeding with the purchase of the
LECOP document, a client can attend NSL’s premises, at
any time, to view the document in detail.

Safe Operating Procedures
Companies can save time and money by purchasing
an NSL LECOP, which contains a policy document and
procedures on all aspects of lifting operations including,
but not limited to; the initial selection of the correct
equipment through to procurement, storage, rigging loft
operations, issuing control, pre-use inspection, safe use
of equipment and accessories, routine examinations,
maintenance, repairs and certification. It also contains
guidance on personnel competence, the planning of lifting
operations and risk assessment.
The LECOP is also supported by a range of other NSL
safety / guidance products such as handbooks, posters,
DVDs, and eLearning programmes, which are designed to
help personnel doing the “hands-on” work.

This document has been designed to help you plan and
record the details required to carry out lifting operations
safely. Once completed, personnel who are required to
carry out the lifting operation will be able to identify what
equipment is needed, where and how it is installed and
ultimately, how to carry out the task safely.

The rubber buffer is used to push against suspended
loads to guide them, especially when landing loads in tight
or congested spaces. Once again, this allows the operator
to remain a safe distance from the load until it has landed.
The poles would normally be fully retracted (for rigidity)
during this type of use where their length is 1.2m / 4ft.
They can be used half-extended if required, however, if
too much pressure is applied, they will telescope in.

Push / Pull Poles are designed to help facilitate ‘handsfree’ lifting. They are a modified aluminium telescopic boat
hook with a rubber buffer at the other end. The hook end
can be used at full extension (approximately 2.1m / 7ft) to
retrieve tag lines hanging vertically without a load handler
having to go too close to a suspended load.
