Outdoor Adventures
Old Creek Ranch/Canyon Trail/Carlsbad Trails
Saturday, September 12 | 9 am - noon (sign-in at 8:30 am)
Hike the trails north and west of San Elijo Park including Old Creek Ranch and
Canyon Trails. The four-mile hike is rated moderately difficult. A challenging, sevenmile hike with fast and slower groups will also be offered to the trails that connect to
Denk Mountain and the Carlsbad trails system.
Meeting location: San Elijo Park/Recreation Center, 1105 Elfin Forest Road.

Lake Wohlford Flume

This seven-mile hike will explore the 2nd San Diego Aqueduct north from Las Posas
Road to Buena Creek Road and then head east along the Lake Wohlford Flume that
transports water from Lake Wohlford to the Pechstein Reservoir at Blue Bird Canyon
Road. There will be an elevation gain of 580'.

Enjoy a three-mile “Ride ‘n Stride” along Twin Valley’s quiet, horse-friendly trail
system. Proceeds from the Poker Ride help to improve the public horse show grounds

Ridgeline Trailhead to Antennas

This moderately difficult, 7.6-mile hike will explore the Cerro de Las Posas Ridgeline
Trails with overlooks of Lake San Marcos, the Valley of Discovery and the Pacific
Ocean. There will be steep climbs with an elevation gain of 1390'.

Leo Carrillo Ranch

This four-mile hike will explore the trails of the Rancho Dorado/Rancho Carrillo area
and visit Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. A more challenging five-mile hike with an
elevation gain of 350' (uphill to Simmons Family Park) will be offered.
Meeting location: Carrillo Elementary School (parking lot near the trailhead),
2875 Poinsettia Lane.

Campers will celebrate Turkey Day by painting with corks and making pinecone
centerpieces. Campers will also compete in a camp turkey trot and rescue a
turkey from becoming dinner!
December 21 to 23 | Santa’s Elves
Campers will celebrate the holiday season by decorating ornaments and cookies
and making Santa puppets.
December 28 to 30 | Space is the Place
Campers will blast off in custom spaceships, discover new planets and dress
like aliens.
January 4 to 8, January 11 | Jurassic World
Adventure camp operates during non-school
times and offers children Kindergarten through
6th grade the opportunity to participate in
creative projects, games, field trips and
special events. Camp meets Monday through
Friday from 7 am to 6 pm at Jack’s Pond
Recreation Center. Participants bring a sack
lunch daily, afternoon snack is provided.
Campers will search for fossils, create dinosaur masks and play T-rex toss.

PRESCHOOLERS
Raggedy Ann & Andy Preschoolers Program
is a recreational enrichment program for children ages three to five years.
The program focuses on socialization skills with an introduction to academic
concepts. Five sessions are offered throughout the year: Summer, Fall 1, Fall 2,
Winter and Spring. Children learn social skills while participating in arts and
crafts, music and movement, storytelling, outdoor play and learning fun!
Monday/Wednesday/Friday Kindergarten Readiness (KR) Classes
These classes are designed for children ages four to five years who are preparing for
Kindergarten. The curriculum includes activities to enhance math and reading readiness skills.
KR classes are not offered during the Summer session.
Tuesday/Thursday Classes
These classes are designed for children ages three to four years who are fully potty-trained.
These classes focus on socialization with an introduction to basic academic concepts.
Registration Procedure
New parents come to the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive, during the pre-registration time to fill out registration
paperwork. Parents then receive registration information and an online registration date. All necessary paperwork must be completed
before registering online. An original birth certificate and proof of residency via a current utility or property tax bill are required. There is
a $35 annual family registration fee and a 10% discount for siblings. The NON-RESIDENT fee is $50 per child, per session.

both youth and adult sports programming offered
year-round throughout the community. City adult athletic
programs offer a wide variety of sports with league play
for almost every level and ability. Reservations and
permits for most city/school athletic fields are also

Youth Aquatics
Parent and Child Aquatics | Ages 6 mo. - 3 yrs.
Children are introduced to basic skills that lay a foundation to help
them learn to swim. Parents are taught how to safely support their
child and how to prepare their child to participate with confidence.
Preschool Learn-to-Swim | Ages 3 - 5 yrs.
Level 1 - Provides an introduction to the most elementary aquatic
skills. At this level, children start developing good attitudes and safe
practices around the water.
Level 2 - Offers children further success with fundamental aquatic
skills performed at a slightly more advanced degree. Most skills in
this level are performed with assistance, but it marks the beginning
of independent aquatic locomotion skills.
Level 3 - Provides additional guided practice of basic aquatic skills
at a slightly higher performance level with greater distances and
times. Skills at this level are performed independently.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills - Marks the beginning of true
locomotion skills. Participants develop simultaneous and alternating
arm and leg actions that lay the foundation for future strokes.

Level 3: Stroke Development - Builds on the fundamentals of
treading water with an introduction to the scissors and dolphin
kicks. Participants swim the front crawl and elementary backstroke.
Passing Level 3 is equivalent to passing our Open Rec Swim Test.
Specialty Aquatic Programs
Level 4: Stroke Improvement - Improves skills and increases
endurance by requiring that students swim familiar strokes (front
crawl and elementary backstroke) for greater distances.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement - Refines performance of all strokes

FACILIT Y A ND PARK RESERVATIONS
Park Reservations
Designated group areas are available at Bradley, Buelow, Connors,
Double Peak, Hollandia, Jack’s Pond, Lakeview, San Elijo, Simmons,
Sunset, Walnut Grove and Woodland parks.
Facility Reservations
The City of San Marcos has 10 rentable rooms at five sites for
business meetings, family celebrations or wedding receptions.
A Facility Use Application is required with deposit to reserve a date.
Reservations are taken no less than 30 days in advance and no
more than nine months in advance. Non-San Marcos groups may
reserve a facility six months in advance. Please call the San Marcos
Community Center to check availability or to obtain an application.

San Marcos Community Center
Community Hall: accommodates 280 theatre style/160 dining style.
Full kitchen available for banquets with rental of the room.
Dining Room: accommodates 54
Meeting Room: accommodates 65
Reservations are required for groups larger than 50 or groups of
any size that will be having a jump house. Groups with less than
50 people are encouraged to make reservations in order to secure
picnic shelters. Reservations must be made at least two weeks in
advance and are available to resident and non-resident groups and
nonprofit organizations during normal park hours. Group areas can
accommodate from 50 to 200 people. Fees are based on a twohour minimum for up to 50 people. Additional time may be reserved
in one-hour increments. Additional fees apply for groups larger than 50.
Reservations do not include exclusive use of any other park
amenities, including sports fields. Sports field reservations must be
made through staff at the Corky Smith Gymnasium.
A Park Use Application must be submitted to Community Services
Department to reserve a space. Please call the San Marcos
Community Center to check availability or to obtain an application.
