Reflection of the Past… Ensure the Future!
As I celebrate my 20th anniversary with Make-A-Wish Central New York, I reflect that it truly was
a classic case of being in the right place at the right time plus a little bit of luck. Twenty years ago,
a transplant from Utah, I was thrilled to land the position as the President & CEO of Make-A-Wish®
Central New York; I could never have imagined then how profoundly the experiences of this position
would impact my life, my career, and my approach to business.
®
Wishes are serious business. Profit is measured in the number of wishes granted. Satisfaction is gauged
by smiles. Impact is the power of HOPE on the healing process. Consumer confidence is a reflection
of the community’s trust of stewardship. Dividends are distributed to all stakeholders in feelings
of personal reward. Success is knowing that every medically eligible child between the ages
of 2½ and 18 has the opportunity to have a wish granted.
What the past twenty years have taught me is relatively simple. Hard work, conscious development
of corporate culture, emphasis on personal and professional growth for staff and volunteers
are what turn wishes into reality. Holding ourselves and others to the highest standards, delivering
on promises, and being laser focused on mission create both fun and powerful life-changing results
for the givers and receivers.

Sean was 9 when his wish was granted...a trip to
the Walt Disney World Resort to meet Goofy!
His indomitable spirit and joy for life made him
an extraordinary young man!
Yes, our stories have a mix of happy and sad endings. Through it all, I marvel at the innocence
and optimism of the children, the courage and grace of the parents, and the generosity of those
we meet. At the most basic level the greatest element of our business is HOPE. The simple act
of granting a wish is much more than a trip, a computer, or meeting a celebrity. It is an act
that provides hope, strength, and joy to children living with life-threatening medical conditions.
At the 2012 Nelcorp Make-A-Wish® Open,
we honor his life and family and know that
he will forever live in our hearts.
Your engagement as donors, medical partners, volunteers, board, and staff has enabled me
to reach this milestone. With collective continued dedication we will ensure that every eligible child
is given the gift of HOPE now and in the years ahead.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Diane E. Kuppermann

1,300th Wish! Make-A-Wish Central New York
Spotlight on Nikki Bronner
®
Nikki, 37, is no stranger to Make-A-Wish®.
In 1990, Nikki was diagnosed with
Hodgkin’s Disease at age 16, a battle
she fought and won. At 18, Nikki was
granted a wish through Make-A-Wish®
Central New York; she requested
furnishings for the living room of her very
first apartment, one she would move
into later that year.
After nearly five years in remission, Nikki was
diagnosed again in both 1995 and 2000, but she
persevered and entered remission with the help
of more chemotherapy and two bone marrow
transplants. In 2001, shortly after having reached
remission again, Nikki was diagnosed once more,
at which point she turned to radiation therapy.

Nikki remains in remission today and attributes her success to a positive mentality and endless
determination. With her sister and brother-in-law, Nikki owns North East Academy of Martial Arts,
where she practices the discipline that has been a part of her family for over 30 years. A testament
to her drive, Nikki wanted to give back to Make-A-Wish® Central New York, the organization that
helped her cope with her initial diagnosis. “I hope to raise enough money to grant the wish of a child
who needs to smile while battling through a rough time, just as I have,” Nikki wrote.
In November 2011, Nikki organized a flash mob consisting of local child and adult martial artists,
with all proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish® Central New York. In addition to the donation page
on the Make-A-Wish® website, Nikki created a Facebook page, complete with videos of the
choreographed dance so participants could learn at home.
Nikki’s flash mob event was a huge success! About 60 martial artists of all ages performed
Nikki’s routine, which was choreographed to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” with the help of her
16-year-old nephew. The performance took place on the basement floor of the Carousel Center,
with spectators watching from the balconies of the floors above. Nikki asked each participant to
raise $30 to help her reach her goal of a $6,000 donation, so that she could grant a wish;
as of February 2012, Nikki has raised over $8,100!
In January 2012, Nikki received word that she will be receiving a wish kid from Make-A-Wish
Central New York. According to an update posted on the flash mob’s Facebook page, she hopes
participants will be able to meet this very special individual! Nikki is also optimistic that the additional
donations she received will be used to grant the wish of a second child. “Make-A-Wish made such
a tremendous impact on my life,” Nikki said, in an interview with the Syracuse Post-Standard. “When
you go through what I went through, you think that life can’t get any worse. But when they showed
up to grant my wish, it was like a shinning star. It truly gives you hope that life will get better. You just
have to keep fighting and you’ll get through it.”

Make-A-Wish® Central New York
reached a milestone in fall 2011,
when it granted its 1,300th wish!

The lucky recipient was Connor, a five-year-old boy
from North Syracuse. Diagnosed a year earlier
with a rare form of kidney cancer, Connor knew
exactly what his wish would be – a Disney cruise
to help him accomplish his true dream of being
a pirate! Connor arrived at Flamingo Bowling Alley
in Liverpool, N.Y. thinking he was in for just
another night out with his family. Instead, he was
greeted by a real life pirate who announced
that Connor would be going on a Disney Dream
Cruise! Connor can’t wait to emulate his favorite
pirates, Jack Sparrow and Captain Hook;
“The boys had a blast and Connor went to school
decked out in his pirate attire today,” said Connor’s
mom. “I think he will be in pirate character
for weeks to come.” Make-A-Wish® Central New York
would like to thank NewsChannel 9 WSYR’s “Bridge Street” for generously sponsoring
Connor’s wish!
Make-A-Wish® can drastically change the outlook of a child receiving treatment for life-threatening
medical conditions, bringing them a sense of joy by granting a magical wish. The memories formed
by these experiences stay with wish kids and their families, bringing them together for the years
to come. In order to grant these wishes, Make-A-Wish® relies heavily on cash and in-kind donations;
the average cost of a wish is $9,000 and is continuing to rise. Examples of donations include
frequent flier miles and ground transporations, meals and gift cards, event spaces, entrance passes
to various attractions and more. To donate to Make-A-Wish® Central New York, call (315) 475-9474
or visit cny.wish.org.
Help Wishes
Take Flight!
For many children, wish adventures begin not when they take part in a special activity, but as soon
as they step onto the runway for their departure flight. Many wishes come true with help
from frequent fliers; donating miles through Make-A-Wish®’s Wishes in Flight SM program is easy
and miles never expire once in the account. Air mile donations are essential to getting wish kids
to their destinations and Make-A-Wish® needs about 2.5 billion miles per year to accommodate
wish kids and their families. If you have air miles with Delta, US Airways, Continental or United,
you hold the ticket to a child’s wish. AAA and Dunkin’ Donuts are partnering with Make-A-Wish®
Central New York to promote the Wishes in Flight SM program: For every 25,000 miles given, up to
1 million miles, Dunkin’ Donuts will give donors a $25 gift card; AAA is promoting the program
in its Member Connection magazine. Frequent fliers can donate by calling (315) 475-9474.

Out Of This World
On February 10, 2012, Make-A-Wish® Central New York teamed up
with the Utica College men’s hockey team and its fans for a fun-filled night
of hockey, giving and wishes!
Eleven-year-old Trevor’s lifelong wish
was to be an astronaut and visit
the Houston Space Center, and in
October 2011, his wish came true!
Utica’s game against Neumann College at
the Utica Memorial Auditorium began with
a surprise wish announcement; 4-year-old wish kid
Will has a love of hockey that transcends his age,
so it was only fitting that he wished for a hockey
rink! In front of the Utica Pioneers and their fans,
Will learned that not only would he receive his
very own rink, but it would be made of a synthetic
material that lets him skate year-round, even
without skates! Will even got to drop the puck
before the game,in front of the entire arena!
Wis h kid Wil l sho ws off his toug hes t
hoc key stan ce and his love of hoc key !
This special night, sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts®,
featured more than just Will’s wish announcement;
the second intermission featured the winner selection
for a dinner with Utica College hockey players,
with all proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish®
Central New York. The winners dined with the team
at Valentino’s Banquet Hall in New Hartford, N.Y.,
a meal Valentino’s generously donated. In addition,
the first 200 fans to enter the Utica Memorial
Auditorium were given numbered Make-A-Wish®
stars which were used to raffle off a giant basket
of fun prizes! Wish kids even got to take to the ice
during intermission for some cool games
with KISS radio station!
In front of the Utica Pioneers and their fans, Will learned
that not only would he receive his very own rink,
but it would be made of a synthetic material
that lets him skate year-round, even without skates!
The night was a huge success for both Will and Make-A-Wish® Central New York! A BIG thank you
to the Utica College hockey team, Dunkin’ Donuts® and Valentino’s Banquet Hall for their support!
Campus Wishmakers is looking to expand onto YOUR campus! To find out how your university can get
involved, please contact Bethann Kistner at (315) 475-9474 or email at [email protected].

A space, physics, and classical music aficionado,
Trevor comes alive at just the mention of NASA;
at just his first meeting with his wish granters,
Michelle and Mike, Trevor attempted to enlighten
them in the science of different spaceships
and their features – whether he succeeded
remains to be seen.
With the help of Michelle, Mike, family and
Make-A-Wish® Central New York and Make-A-Wish®
Texas Gulf Coast & Louisiana, Trevor’s journey
began with a surprise announcement celebration
at the Roberson Museum & Science Center
in Binghamton. Trevor had so much fun and got
to take part with family and friends present.
The highlight of his celebration was definitely the
visit to the digital planetarium!
Wis h kid Tre vor : “I wish to be an a stro nau

Trevor loved it so much, he even revisited the Space Station
the next day before his private tour of NASA.
Trevor’s four-day trip was highlighted by visits to the Houston Space Center and NASA. At the
Space Center, Trevor got to see the Saturn V and spend time talking space with an astronaut
who shared his stories from his tour on the International Space Station! Trevor loved it so much,
he even revisited the Space Station the next day before his private tour of NASA. Once at NASA,
Trevor got to sit in the commander’s seat in the space shuttle, touch a Soyuz (one of his favorite
spacecraft), examine an airlock and more. Trevor made such a strong impression by explaining
the history and ins and outs of a specific shuttle part to a NASA employee, the employee was
so overwhelmed by Trevor’s knowledge that he had to regain his composure before stressing
that Trevor needs to one day come work for NASA! Trevor’s wish included education, exploration
and excitement, and in addition, ultimately it brought him great joy! Make-A-Wish® Central New York
thanks the Make-A-Wish® Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana chapter for assisting with Trevor’s wish
and the Wishes Forever Endowment fund for their sponsorship!

Make-A-Wish ® Teams Up with Macy’s
“I wish to visit my ‘back-up boys,’
the officers of the Gonzales Police
Department in Gonzales, Calif.”
This past holiday season, Make-A-Wish® Central New York collaborated
with Macy’s charitable programs to help make wishes come true
for children in need of hope, strength and joy. The Thanks for Sharing
program, Macy’s Believe Campaign, and National Believe Day
all helped bring smiles to these wonderful wish kids.
Shane’s wish seemed normal enough – until you
consider he lives in Sackets Harbor, N.Y.,
3,000 miles away. The story behind Shane’s unique
wish is truly remarkable.
Shane, 6, was diagnosed with a condition
bit
Wi sh kid Sh ane bri ngi ng a litt le
that causes his body to grow excess bone
of Wa ter tow n to Go nza les , CA
in his soft tissue and tendons. Enter the Gonzales
Police Department (GPD). Each year, the GPD
selects a sick child from anywhere in the country
and donates money they earn at their annual
health and safety fair to help find a cure for that child’s illness. In 2008, the GPD came across
Shane’s story in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, NY. The department was so moved,
they voted unanimously to designate Shane as their annual donation recipient. The GPD has sent
Shane police uniforms, badges, firefighter helmets and more. Shane also receives monthly emails
and toy cars on his birthdays and at Christmas!
Hundreds of people, including the police and fire
departments from all over Monterey County, even met
Shane in a local park to celebrate “Shane Terry Day!”
That being said, it was a no-brainer that Shane would want to visit his “back-up boys,”
as he calls them, in Gonzales. Through work with the Make-A-Wish® Central New York and
Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area, Shane flew west with his family and a friend. Once he landed,
Shane was escorted into Gonzales in a stretch limousine (with his head out through the roof)
with the aid of a police escort and the high school marching band! Hundreds of people,
including the police and fire departments from all over Monterey County, even met Shane
in a local park to celebrate “Shane Terry Day!” Shane spent the afternoon with cub scouts,
Gonzales’ mayor, a classic car club, 60 uniformed officers and the bomb squad, who brought
along their robot, “Boomer.”
Make-A-Wish® Central New York would like to thank our Adopt-A-Wish® sponsor, Northwestern
Mutual Financial Network, The Watertown Group, for their generosity. Special thanks
to Make-A-Wish® Greater Bay Area and the Gonzales community for assisting us and making
Shane’s wish so memorable! The trip to Gonzales brought Shane an overwhelming feeling of joy
and the satisfaction of meeting the men and women who have cared so much for him from afar.

Through Thanks for Sharing, visitors to Macy’s stores
during the holiday season made charitable
donations of $25 and received 10% back
on all purchases made through December 31st.
Donations secured through the program are given
to a number of charities, including the Make-A-Wish®.
In Thanks for Sharing’s eight years, it has raised
over $80 million!
Macy’s Believe Campaign captures the heart
of the holiday season by promoting goodwill
and generosity. From November 6 through
December 24, each Macy’s location featured
Believe meters, a letter-writing station and
W ish ki d Du st in me et
an official R.H. Macy Santa Mail letterbox; for each
in g Do ra th e Ex pl or er
letter received, Macy’s donated $1 to Make-A-Wish,

up to $1 million! This year, stores also featured
an augmented reality component that allowed
shoppers to take virtual photos on their phones
with animated characters from the Macy’s-produced holiday special, “Yes, Virginia” and upload
them as holiday cards. Additionally, Macy’s hosted National Believe Day on December 9.
For this event, Macy’s helped grant wishes to kids nationwide – this is where Dustin, a five-year-old
boy from Ilion, N.Y., came in!
Dustin wished to meet Dora the Explorer, so Make-A-Wish® Central New York worked with Macy’s
at Sangertown Square in New Hartford, N.Y. to grant Dustin’s wish. Dustin was lucky enough to have
two pre-wish events! At his announcement celebration, Dustin learned he would be going
to Universal Studios to meet Dora and then spent the night celebrating with family and friends.
The next day, Dustin joined his family at the Sangertown Square Macy’s, where they were all surprised
with numerous gifts from Macy’s and its employees, including Dora toys, luggage and gift cards!
Make-A-Wish® Central New York would like to thank both Macy’s at Sangertown Square and all of its
employees for helping to share the power of a wish®! Their contributions greatly enhanced
Dustin’s experience and celebrations and made his trip a giant success!

Held at the Crunch’s home venue, the OnCenter

served to raise funds and awareness for
Make-A-Wish® Central New York, which serves both
the greater Syracuse and Binghamton areas.
As part of the festivities, UPS® delivered both teams’
mascots to the ice and fans enjoyed a fundraising

and Mike May from Johnston Paper. Jeremy’s dream came true when he was granted his wish
to travel with his family to Atlantis, Bahamas! Between the first and second periods, a Twitter hashtag
battle ended with the Senators taking the win and the Make-A-Wish Trophy was also awarded
to the Senators, who were named the Cup winner. The event was a huge success and the Senators
look forward to defending their title next year!
The Syracuse Auto Dealers Association (SADA)
held its annual Charity Preview on February 15
at the OnCenter Complex in Syracuse, N.Y.
Attendees could designate a favorite charity
as the beneficiary of their donation and through
these contributions, Make-A-Wish® Central New York
was able to raise $17,000! The evening began
with a cocktail half-hour, where guests mingled,
got ready to see the exciting new cars and
viewed a video presentation recognizing
the Preview’s sponsors. The OnCenter Exhibition
Hall was then opened for the car display,
followed by dinner and the truck, sport utility
and conversion van display at the War Memorial
Exhibition Hall. The War Memorial Auditorium
featured dessert and the world’s finest and most
expensive cars, much to everyone’s delight!
The event was a huge success and Make-A-Wish®
