ad majorem dei gloriam 2013-14 annual report
FATHER JOHN P. FOLEY, S.J. IS THE FOUNDING
president of the first Cristo Rey high school in Chicago
which opened in 1996. Our students once asked him why he
opened it. His response was that, “We had all of this talent
in the neighborhood that was being wasted. We wanted
our young people to maximize their talent and be able to
contribute.” It is a Jesuit tradition to maximize your given
talent so that you may glorify God. We call this “For the
greater glory of God” or in Latin “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
(AMDG)” our school theme for 2013-2014. As our school
community grows, students have even more opportunities
to maximize their talent and give glory to God.
God’s greater glory was recognized throughout the
community when students:
– volunteered as tutors, neighborhood clean-ups,
supporting parish events and entertaining the youth or
elderly.
– wrote AMDG on tests and papers they proudly
submitted to demonstrate academic standards.
– competed with other high schools: This was our most
competitive year athletically as two teams lost in playoff
games in overtime and our track team had two students
qualify for the section meet. – acted, sang and danced during our second, but a
much larger production of the musical “Grease.”
– took time three times a week to examine their
conscience in the manner St. Ignatius of Loyola
developed 450 years ago.
– assumed more responsibility in the workplace including
supervising and developing other student-workers.
– Our junior chapter of the Society of Hispanic
Professional Engineers or SHPE (pronounced “ship”),
launched our first ever Robotics team. The students
worked each day after school and on weekends to
fundraise, design, and build their robot with engineers
from local firms and engineering students from local
universities supported. At the regional competition in
Duluth the team placed 40th out of 120 teams. Most
importantly, the true glory of their talents came out
in the collaboration they displayed at the regional
competition.
If you have seen our vans throughout town transporting
students to and from work, you might have also seen the
AMDG logo on the back window. That is our mission: to
maximize the talent found in the neighborhoods we serve
so that God’s glory may be recognized.

with her work. She even manages access to private, confidential information.”
SALO, LLC was one of the first companies to hire our
students when the school opened in 2007 and continues to
welcome new students each year. Nance Torrence, Director
of Facilities, started supervising the students in 2007 and says
that the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) is a two-way
street. “Students help us get our work done and we enjoy
mentoring and helping them get out into the real world.”
Entering the summer of 2014, Torrence had only taken one
vacation in her nine year tenure with the company and had
plans for vacation number two. Torrence was concerned
about taking time away, but she looked to Itzy to keep the
office going. “I talked to Itzy and asked her to come in and
do her normal responsibilities. And she did great! These
students can do anything anyone else can do. When I was
on vacation I thought, here’s a girl who’s fifteen years old and
she did just fine!”
As a freshman, Itzy was responsible for ordering office
supplies, setting up for meetings, and even updating SALO’s
intranet. This year, Itzy has expanded her responsibilities.

SUPPORT FOR GRADUATES
BEFORE ATTENDING CRISTO REY JESUIT HIGH
SCHOOL, our students have a pretty limited world view.
They spend most of their time in their own neighborhoods.
Our Corporate Work Study Program expands our students’
world when they go “downtown” for perhaps the first time
and they work side-by-side with lawyers, accountants and
engineers. In addition, our college counseling office takes
students on visits to college campuses throughout the
Midwest, and, of course, then they go on to enroll in those
same universities.
For a few members of the class of 2011 (our first
graduates) their world view became much bigger last year
when they spent a semester studying abroad. Nancy ’11
and Miriam ’11, both at St. Mary’s University in Winona,
studied in Sevilla, Spain, while Jeffrey ’11, at St. John’s
University, was in Chile; Simone ’11 of Augsburg College
was in Mexico; and Jennifer ’11, also a student at St.
Mary’s, studied in Rome, Italy.
When asked why he chose to study abroad, Jeffrey said,
“I wanted to explore the world that I had been learning so
much about in school.”
Miriam shared that, “My parents were really excited for
me. They were proud of the fact that their daughter got to
study overseas.”
All five emphasized the value of their experience and
agreed that they learned more outside of the classroom
than in it. Simone spent part of her semester living in the
indigenous community of Amatlan. “Overall, studying in
Mexico was the best experience I have had.”
Jeffrey shared insights. “I learned about the strength of the
mind and its ability to assimilate to a completely different
culture. I challenged myself and I stepped outside of
my comfort zone, because I knew this experience would
positively benefit me. I am very grateful.”

CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM
FIFTEEN MONTHS AGO, ITZAYAN ROCHA-CONORADO
‘17 had never had a job before. She was an outstanding middle school student excited to start a new adventure at Cristo

called around school, was not only starting a new school, but
a new job too.
a student who has great skills, which Itzy has. She is the first
Cristo Rey student to support HR and they are really happy
with her work.
Torrence says, “We’d kind of been looking to branch out with
Itzy hopes to continue working at SALO until she graduates.
When asked what she would say to another student considering interviewing to work at SALO, she responded, “No,
sorry, that’s my job!”

CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM
FIFTEEN MONTHS AGO, ITZAYAN ROCHA-CONORADO
‘17 had never had a job before. She was an outstanding middle school student excited to start a new adventure at Cristo
Rey J esuit High School. But ‘Itzy’, as she is affectionately
called around school, was not only starting a new school, but
a new job too.
a student who has great skills, which Itzy has. She is the first
Cristo Rey student to support HR and they are really happy
with her work.
Torrence says, “We’d kind of been looking to branch out with
Itzy hopes to continue working at SALO until she graduates.
When asked what she would say to another student considering interviewing to work at SALO, she responded, “No,
sorry, that’s my job!”
Jennifer ‘11, Jeffrey ‘11,
Nancy ‘11, and Miriam
‘11 all studied abroad last
school year.
