SHOPPINGNEW YORK Barbara Tfank The Fur Salon at Saks Promenade PICKS Fifth Avenue By Marian Betancourt Daniel Boulud’s casual yet trendy midtown spot—one of NYC’s top French bistros, according to Zagat—is perhaps best known for their famous db Burger, a sirloin burger filled with red-wine-braised short ribs and foie gras on a home-made toasted parmesan bun. It’s certainly earned its stellar reputation, but there is oh-so-much more to be discovered at Boulud’s contemporary interpretation of the Parisian classic. Bally Michael Kors at Bloomingdale’s he past several seasons, fur has been all over the fashion magazines—flashy, hot pink fox coats; sedate sheared mink toppers; buttery-soft beaver trims on all-weather coats; and embellishments on handbags, boots, gloves, scarves, and hats. Whether faux or the real deal, designers used fur trims everywhere—on jewelry, hair ornaments, hemlines, necklines, collars, cuffs, and even on the insoles of shoes (not just boots)! There’s also a less daunting Benjamin Breakfast, which is simply juice, eggs any style, home fries, and thick slabs of grilled Canadian bacon. Of course, this is bacon on steroids, so you may as well be having steak! If steak is not your cup of tea this early in the day, fear not, Benjamin’s does offer a “light and healthy” breakfast of juice, cereal, yogurt, and coffee or tea. There are fruit pancakes and also Belgian waffles with fresh berries and “schlag” (German for whipped cream). The breakfast buffet allows you more modest choices. On your way out, notice the impressive wall of celebrity photos and should you want to come back for dinner with a bucket of money, and nine friends, you can order the exclusive dish of every cut of beef on the menu, as well as chateaubriand, for $1,111. The restaurant serves the adjoining Dylan Hotel in the restored century-old Chemists Club Building, and is operated by Benjamin Prelvukaj and his partner, Chef Arturo McLeod, both alums of Peter Luger, the famous steak emporium. Katz 30 The menu is equally sophisticated with dishes like the light and delicious signature Lemon Ricotta Hot Cakes: whipped egg whites are folded into a batter that includes fine lemon zest. They are served with a dusting of confectioner’s sugar, blackberries, butter, and a tiny bottle of warm maple syrup. The subtle lemon lingers as if to energize your day. (Be sure to ask for the recipe before you leave.) For a fabulous take on your morning oatmeal, order the Honey Oatmeal Berry Brûlée. The oats are cooked with raisin, honey, and coconut, baked in a little red crock pot and served with fresh berries. After you’ve experienced this, no home-cooked oatmeal will do. H. Amiard This season, fur—faux and real—is in high demand and designers have used it everywhere: in trim, vests, muffs, hats, scarves, and of course, the classic coats and jackets. Tibetan lamb, lynx, chinchilla, and sable are in high demand—and accessories are all the rage.” At lunch, db features a “Bouchon” menu with entrée selections Among the innumerable designers who showed fur (again, real or faux)—and we are not just talking coats here, but trims in endless configurations—are from $28 including a main course with choice of soup or salad or Azzedine Alaïa, Akris, Etro, Ralph Lauren, Christian Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci, and Donna Karan, among the many. The restaurant also offers a pre- and post-theater prix-fixe three-course Lam put beaver sleeves on a jacket; Coach offered rabbit-fur muffs; Louis Vuitton did a checkerboard mink scarf; there was alpaca trim on booties from dinner for $45. Gucci; and a pony-hair-and-wool fedora from Dolce & Gabbana—and that is but the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The wine list includes over 100 affordable vintages from $25, with Animal prints reigned big-time. The seasonal menu, prepared by Daniel Boulud protégé Chef Laurent Kalkotour, combines innovation with tradition and expresses the flavors of Kalkotour’s Provençal heritage with regional specialties such as: Tartare a la Niçoise - yellowfin tuna, focaccia fennel, and sauce anchoiade; Slow Roasted Dorade with crispy potato scales, vegetable timbale, bulgur, and toasted pine nut jus; or a like Roasted knows this and therefore has created vests (long and short), collars, hats, and chubbies in colorful hues and styles—for everyone.
