The event takes place Tuesday November 15th at the Prestige Lakeside Resort between 7-9pm. This all inclusive forum will feature the 3 candidates seeking election in the race for Mayor of the City of Nelson, 8 candidates running for Nelson Council as well as the 2 candidates running for election in both electoral Areas E and F. As we have for several election forums in recent years, the Chamber is working collaboratively with 103.5 The Bridge FM News Director Glenn Hicks and Nelson Star Editor Bob Hall to develop a format that is designed to be fun, inspiring and provocative. One of our co-hosts, Glenn Hicks, News Director of 103. 5 The Bridge FM , says it is important to get questions to candidates that have them think on their feet, and not just be prepared campaign speeches. While the Tuesday November 15th Forum will feature questions from the media, and the public, there will also be some provocative and fun topics discussed by the candidates, featuring questions that may take some out of their comfort zone. We encourage you to take the time to join us at the Prestige on Tuesday evening. If you are unable to attend the Tuesday session, there is an All Candidates Forum at Central School in Nelson on Wednesday November 16th 7pm-9pm. Chamber and Credit Union to roll out Shop Nelson Campaign __________________________ The reasons we live in Nelson and area are as diverse as the people that live here. Nelson comes complete with history, culture, natural beauty, and a small-town energy that is both powerful and positive. One of the worlds best outdoor playgrounds, and an entrepreneurial spirit second to no other community, providing a diverse local economy. That being said, many people often over look the need for a strong local economy, and the support of our small business sector. Small business is big business in our region. Anyone who owns a business knows it isn’t easy. Let’s face it, generating sales, meeting payroll, serving customers, maintaining inventory, and doing all of this well enough to earn sufficient profit to keep operating takes a lot of skill and energy. Chamber President Chuck Bennett notes “a strong diverse small business sector is vital to our region. Keeping money in our community sustains more jobs, helps fund more local services, and encourages neighbourhood improvements. Local businesses contribute significant dollars to local foundations, non profit organizations and local sports teams, and that’s one of the themes we will be building on during this campaign. The Shop Nelson and Area campaign will focus on the important Christmas retail period. That being said, it is something that the Chamber ,the Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership and Credit Union will want to keep top of mind throughout the year . Shopping locally seems like a no brainer. It should be as commonplace as recycling, but it is also an educational process. The Chamber is pleased to play a role in this and other on going Shop Local campaigns.
