2014 Rental Guide
Beau Photo Supplies 1520 West 6th Ave. Vancouver, BC 604.734.7771 www.beauphoto.com 2014 Rental Guide Image © Bob Akester Image © Erich Saide I have been using Beau photo since the beginning of my career for all my gear and have never looked back. The staff is friendly (they make you feel like part of the family) and up to date when I have questions, and the selection is great. The rental department is fully equipped!! What more could a photographer want!!! Erich Saide www.erichsaide.com Cover photos © Jason Kazuta Photography for peace. Without change, Beau Photo has adapted to the future. Bob Akester A&s Images www.bobakester.com Image © Gucio Photography From our very first days in art school and right through the last five years of our business, the amazing team at Beau has been a constant source of knowledge and support. They've answered a multitude of questions, repaired broken gear (all while reserving judgement!) , and in a historic moment even took a saw to a 9' roll of paper to get it into our car… In short, we couldn't have done it without them and will be dropping by for our weekly visits for life! Kasia + Anna Gucio Photography www.guciophotography.com We have been in the business since 1982, and over the years, we’ve seen many changes in the industry. While remaining dedicated to the traditional analogue formats, we have also kept on the cutting edge of technology and are here to help you understand the latest camera or lighting setup. Beau carries everything from cameras and lenses, grip equipment and lighting, and much more. Find the brands you trust that have the most reliable products. To add to this, Beau has an experienced staff who are ready and willing to answer questions, help you find the right equipment for your needs and troubleshoot whatever problems may arise. Beau has a very well equipped rental department with current digital cameras and lenses, lighting and grip. Rent for a special project, or try out the camera or lens you are thinking of buying. Film is still alive and well at Beau! Find a great selection of film (even large format), paper, darkroom supplies and toy cameras in the film department. Beau Photo is an Impossible Project partner store and carries instant film and accessories for those who miss the impulsive creativity of Polaroid. Beau Photo is a local independent shop where the clients are not just customers, but a part of our photographic community. Stop by to say hi, have a chat with our friendly staff and maybe run into another one of our great clients who is just as passionate about photography as you are. She uses a Profoto flash and paints with light. For this image Alexia used the Profoto Pro-B4. In this case she may not have needed the Pro-B4’s extremely short flash duration or fast recycling. But like most artists, she wants her imagination to set the limit, not her tools. © A LEXIA SINCLAIR More information on profoto.com/ca/pro-b4 Blazes Photographic Inc. 351 Steelcase Road West #6 Markham, ON L3R 4H9 Tel. 1-888-561-0906, [email protected] Pro Daylight kit - 125. 800w Pro Daylight head, ballast, reflector Pro Tungsten kit - 75. 3 Pro Tungsten 1000w Air heads w/reflectors, 3 stands Pro Tungsten head w/reflector 28. Choosing a Microphone. Believe it or not, the audio component of video is immensely important to your audience’s experience. Currently, there are two ways to record audio for video. You can just use the audio track that is recorded along with the video in your DSLR, and secondly you can record the audio separately, and sync the audio to the video in post production. In our rentals department, we have several microphones, an audio adapter, and a sound recorder to choose from. Sennheiser MKE 400 - This compact, rugged little shotgun microphone provides great sound for the videographer on the run with its integrated rubber shockmount which effectively suppresses noise from handling. The MKE 400 also has an ultra-long run time of up to 300 hours from a single AAA battery. Sennheiser MKH 416 This top of the line Sennheiser microphone delivers the ultimate in sound quality, with its high sensitivity, directivity & low noise levels. Beachtek DXA-SLR PRO HDSLR Audio Adapter - This device will enable you to vastly increase the audio quality of your recordings by providing two XLR inputs for high end mics, AGC disabling, headphone metering, built in limiting and much more. This unit can provide phantom power to two mics for stereo recording. Zoom H4N - The Zoom H4n audio recorder features X/Y stereo microphones that are arranged on the same axis which ensures the mics are always an equal distance from the sound source for perfect localization without phase shifting. The mics can be rotated to allow a 90 or 120 degree pick up pattern for extra versatility. Sennheiser EW 112-p G3 Camera Mount Wireless Microphone Kit A great system for operating in the field or conducting interviews, this kit consists of a small but durable camera mountable receiver, body transmitter and a small, directional lavalier microphone. Useful when shooting wide, where a mic on a boom would get in the shot. www.beauphoto.com ; 604.734.7771 Video Accessories Sennheiser MKE 600 The robust Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun microphone is the ideal on-camera microphone for conducting interviews. This mic features a very directional pick up pattern, and effectively attenuates noise coming from the sides and rear. Unlike the two previous Sennheiser microphones, this mic requires phantom power to operate, so must be plugged into a mixer or similar device that provides phantom power, like the Beachtek DXA-SLR PRO Audio Adapter. 25 Digital Camera Reference Chart 26 Megapixel (dimensions) 16bit File Size Focal Length Multiplier 300dpi print (non interpolated) Capture fps (buffer) ISO range Sync Speed Approx. images per 1GB card Canon Rebel-T4i 18.1 Mp (5184 x 3456) 102.5 MB 1.6x 17.2” x 11.5” 5 fps (6 raw/12 jpeg) 100 - 25,600 1/200 34 raw or 125jpeg Canon EOS-70D 20.2 Mp (5472 x 3648) 102.5 MB 1.6x 17.2” x 11.5” 5.3 fps (16 raw/58 jpeg) 100 - 12800 1/250 34 raw or 125 jpeg Canon EOS-7D 18.1 Mp (5184 x 3456) 102.5 MB 1.6x 17.2” x 11.5” 8 fps (15 raw/94 jpeg) 100 - 6400 1/250 34 raw or 125 jpeg Canon EOS-6D 20.2 Mp (5472 x 3648) 114.2 MB 1.0x (full frame) 18.2” x 12.2” 4.3fps (15 raw / 100+ jpeg) 100 - 102,400 1/180 37 raw or 161 jpeg Canon EOS 5D Mk III 22.3 Mp (5760 x 3840) 126.6MB 1.0x (full frame) 19.2” x 12.8” 6 fps (17 raw / 100+ jpeg) 100 - 102,400 1/200 32 raw or 128 jpeg Canon EOS-1D Mark IV 16 Mp (4896 x 3264) 91.4 MB 1.3x 16.3”x10.8” 10 fps (26 raw/85 jpeg) 100 - 12800 1/300 66 raw or 197 jpeg Canon EOS-1D X 18.1 Mp (5184 x 3456) 102.5 MB 1.0x (full frame) 17.2” x 11.5” 10 - 14 fps (41 raw / 200+ jpeg) 100 - 204,800 1/250 35 raw or 152 jpeg Nikon D7100 24.1 Mp (6000 x 4000) 137.4 MB 1.5x 20.0” x 13.3” 6 fps (6 raw / 100+ jpeg) 100 - 25,600 1/250 19 raw or 65 jpeg Nikon D300s 12.3 Mp (4288 x 2848) 69.9 MB 1.5x 14.3” x 9.5” 6-8 fps (17 raw/100 jpeg) 200 - 3200+ 1/250 48 raw or 136 jpeg Nikon D610 24.3 Mp (6016 x 4016) 138.2 MB 1.0x (full frame) 20.1” x 13.4” 5.5 fps (15 raw / 30 jpeg) 100 - 25,600 1/250 18 raw or 65 jpeg Nikon D800 D800E 36.3 Mp (7360 x 4912) 206.8 MB 1.0x (full frame) 24.5” x 16.4” 4 fps (16 raw / 40 jpeg) 100 - 25,600 1/250 12 raw or 44 jpeg Nikon D3s 12.1 Mp (4256 x 2832) 68 MB 1.0x (full frame) 14.2” x 9.4” 9 fps (36 raw/82 jpeg) 200 - 12800 1/250 50 raw or 136 jpeg Nikon D3x 24.5 Mp (6048x4032) 139 MB 1.0x (full frame) 20.2” x 13.4” 5 fps 21 raw/44 jpeg 100 - 1600+ 1/250 24 raw or 67 jpeg Nikon D4/Df 16.2 Mp (4928 x 3280) 92.4 MB 1.0x (full frame) 16.4” x 10.9” 9 - 11 fps (62 raw / 120+ jpeg) 100 - 204,800 1/250 27 raw or 64 jpeg Hasselblad H4D-50/H5D-50 50.0 Mp (8176x6132) 286.9 MB 1.1x ( (full frame 645) 27.3” x 20.44” 0.8 fps (25+ raw)* 50 - 400 1/800 sec 12 (3 FR raw) Phase One IQ260 / 645DF+ 60.0 Mp (8984 x 6732) 346.0 MB 1.0x (full frame 645) 29.9” x 22.4” 2 fps 50 - 800 1/125 or LS 12 raw (approx) Phase One P65+ / Hasselblad H2 60Mp (8984 x 6732) 346 MB 1.0x (full frame 645) 29.9” x 22.4” 1.0 fps 50 - 800 1/800 sec 12 raw (approx) Beau Photo Supplies ; 1520 West 6th Ave. Vancouver, BC How big a print can I make from my digital camera? Your camera has specific horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions, for example, 3008x2000, 3504x2336 pixels etc. If you divide one of these pixel dimensions by your desired printing size, you can then calculate what dpi an image your camera will give you. An example… your camera has 3000x2000 pixels, and you want to make a print that is 14 inches wide... so 3000 divided by 14 equals 214 (rounded off ), or 214 dpi. So your 3000x2000 camera can give you a 14x9.3 inch print at 214 dpi. So really... how BIG a print can I make? Don’t I need at least 300 dpi for a good print? If you don’t interpolate your image, then the larger you print, the lower the effective dpi will drop. I find that for high-quality smaller prints, around 180 dpi is about as low as I would want to go. For large inkjet posters, 120dpi is still perfectly fine and for gigantic billboards, usually a mere 20-40 dpi will suffice! If you are trying to push a relatively low-res digital file too big, you may start to see pixelization. You can upsample or resize an image (Photoshop bicubic-smoother, Genuine Fractals etc.) to increase the effective file size. The practical limit of how large you can go is very dependant on the quality of the original digital file. If the original was a technically sound capture (good lens, sharp focus, low ISO, good exposure etc.) then you might be surprised at how big you can go from a relatively small file. I have seen excellent 20x30’s even from 12 Mp SLRs, 40x60’s from 24Mp SLRs and with 40Mp or higher digital backs, the sky’s the limit! All of your long hours are on this card, Work out a system of keeping formatted (blank) memory cards distinctly separate from cards that have been shot-to and not downloaded yet. Organize your workflow to ensure that all images are downloaded safely and that none are lost due to an accidental reformat! If you suspect a card problem, immediately stop using that card! If there are images on the card, continued use of a card with a damaged directory structure could very well mean loss of subsequent images (at the very least) or possibly loss of all images on that card. Make sure you have card recovery software on hand such as Lexar Media’s ImageRescue or PhotoRescue from www.datarescue.com. These programs will usually allow for a near full recovery of images from a directory-damaged memory card. make sure they’re secure. Insert cards gently into a camera’s card slot. Even if you are in a hurry, please avoid slamming a card home! This can cause bent pins in the camera’s card slot, potentially resulting in a total malfunction of the camera and a relatively costly repair.
