Year of Mercy Day
Today (Friday 4 March) is The Day of Mercy.
In response to Pope Francis and Bishop
Patrick’s to hold a special Day of Mercy we
held a series of events in school.
Our day started with two Acts of Worship
for the whole school during which we
watched a special message from Bishop
Patrick explaining the concept of mercy and
the need for forgiveness in our lives. Later in the day all students in
Years 7, 8 and 9 attended a special workshop with Rachel our Lay
Chaplain on the theme of Mercy.
A full report with photos will follow in next week’s Friday Letter.
Important information for parents.
Wednesday 23 March – Students break up for the Easter Holiday.
Thursday 24 March – Inset Day.
Monday 11 April - Students return to school after the Easter Holiday.
CAFOD Fast Day
Thank you very much too all the students and staff
who supported our CAFOD Lenten Fast day. The
grand total of £1005 was raised which is a wonderful
achievement. CAFOD have contacted the school to
confirm that thanks to UKAID this amount will be
doubled. Representatives from CAFOD have
confirmed that the money will build a new water
pump, and provide an engineer with training and
tools to maintain it.
Thank you to everyone for their support.
Meet the Prefects
This week our new prefects began their duties, team
training took place the week before and the team
have made a really impressive start to their roles. The
prefect system has a long tradition at Saint John
Houghton and these students look set to help
develop our school into a safer and happier place for all.

Year 8 examinations W/C 7 March 2016
Year 8 students will be taking four examinations during this week under strict
examination guidelines. This will mean that external invigilators will be in to supervise
the running of each exam.
All students should have received a booklet containing a copy of the timetable for each
exam and other information to assist them. Anyone who has not yet received a booklet
please see reception for a copy.
If you require any further information please contact Mrs Morris, examinations officer.
Year 10 and Year 11 working with the University of Nottingham
Mr Warden, Mrs Folan, Mr Timms and Ms Bacall accompanied Year 10 and
11 students to the University of Nottingham. Mrs Folan writes “On
Wednesday this week, 47
pupils in Years 10 and 11
decided not to go to school.
Instead they went to university!
The day, organised by Nottingham University’s outreach
programme, provided a variety of activities for the students. Their
aim is to encourage school pupils to think of university as an option
later on by giving them a taste of campus life.
Our students took part in a quest involving research –one of the key
ways of learning at university –and also enjoyed an entrepreneurial
task.
We also had a tour of the campus, led by one of the student ambassadors. We found out that the MRI scanner was
first developed at Nottingham University,
that Wednesday afternoons are for sport
(there’s a Quidditch team by the way) and
that you lose 10% of your marks for every
day your work is past the deadline –gulp!
Our students and staff really enjoyed the day
and felt it gave a good idea of what it would
be like to go into higher education. One or
two students have even started to think
again –that university might be for them.
It might be for you too! Work hard and you
could get there!”
Motivation Maker event
On Wednesday afternoon Year 10 and 11 students
were all involved in a Motivation Maker presentation
and workshop lead by staff from the Nottingham
Tutorial College. The session aimed to get the students
to think about their long term goals and how they
intended to achieve them. The session gave them lots
to think about including challenging themselves to be
more open minded and accepting failing as a tool to
improve and move on. The overriding message of not
giving up is obviously very relevant to both year groups
at the moment, but particularly Year 11.
Hopefully the students have all been able to take
something away from the session and will continue to
adopt some of the thinking methods and goal setting strategies that were talked about.
Mark, the main presenter, wanted me to pass on his thanks for the wonderful reception he received and to
congratulate the students on their engagement, participation and attentiveness.
Well Done Year 10 and 11.
Special thanks needs to go to Charlie Manchester and Louis Beardsley for their technical support and to all the site
team and staff for helping support the event.
Mrs D Smith
(Acting Progress and Attainment Leader for Years 10 and 11)
Head lice
It has come to our notice that there are several cases of head lice in school. Since we are no longer able to call on
the School Nurse to examine pupils’ heads, I would be most grateful if you would inspect your child’s head for any
evidence of infestation. I am sure that you are aware that head lice are most frequently found in clean hair.
Nevertheless, as a precaution, an early and regular inspection of your child’s hair is advisable.
Your local chemist will stock the necessary product to clear up any problem fast.
Mrs S Doczyminska
