JS Book Review
JIM CURIOUS: A VOYAGE TO THE HEART OF THE SEA
Author: Matthias Picard
Publisher: New York: Abrams Books for Young Readers, 2014
Call No.: Junior Lending Simple Fiction PIC
The title and cover of this book would pique the curiosity of children. Told through
illustrations, the story follows Jim, a daring young boy, on his fantastical trip to the depths
of the ocean. Along the way, he meets with all manner of sea creatures, wrestles with a
shark, and even discovers the lost city of Atlantis. However, it is only at the bottom of the
ocean that he encounters the most mysterious thing.
This unusual wordless book effectively communicates a sense of awe and suspense
throughout Jim’s journey. The intricately wrought 3-D illustrations would definitely
inspire children to embark on their own undersea adventure. Remember to put on the
3-D glasses when you read this book for the full experience!

THERE ARE NO ANIMALS IN THIS BOOK!: (ONLY FEELINGS)
Author: Chani Sanchez
Publisher: Brooklyn: Pow!, a division of
Powerhouse Packaging & Supply Inc., 2013
Call No: Junior Lending Picture Book English 152.4 SAN
Don’t let the title of this book scare you away. Despite its insistence that There Are No
Animals in This Book!: (Only Feelings), several animals do come forward to let you know
that being left out makes them sad!
18
An extremely fun read for children and their parents, the book also touches on the topic
of feelings through the clever use of onomatopoeia and artwork from around the world.
Packed with attractive colours and a healthy dollop of humour, you can be sure to have a
great time exploring emotions and learning about empathy with young ones.

NO PLACE FOR MAGIC
Author: E. D. Baker
Publisher: New York: Bloomsbury, 2006
Call No.: Junior Lending English BAK
Genre of the book: Fantasy
Prince Eadric’s brother has been kidnapped by trolls! In this fourth book in the entertaining
Tales of the Frog Princess series, Eadric sets off with his fiancée Princess Emma to rescue
his brother, Bradston. They encounter many dangerous obstacles on their quest, and
they soon find out that using Emma’s magic to solve problems only makes things worse!
Along the way, Eadric starts getting too close to girls from his past, which makes Emma
jealous. Will the royal couple’s relationship survive this rescue mission, or will it be too
late for Bradston? Read more to find out!
Why I loved this book:
I would recommend this book to children aged seven to twelve years old although I did
not like the fact that Emma and Eadric are a couple in this story. Oh, it’s alright for them
since they are around 25, but think about what goes into a young child’s mind. (You know,
all those mushy stuff…) However, the story is great and there is plenty of excitement in
the form of vampires and sea monsters that the young heroes have to battle. Moreover,
you have to admire Princess Emma for her bravery in the story and her display of magic
tricks. So if you ever see this book, be sure to read it!
When I am not reading, I am watching television and having fun with my friends.
