“When the guys at Gourock approached me about trialling Momoi monofilament, I must admit I was a
little apprehensive - particularly as I had used my favourite brand without any problems for 10 years.
Experience says, “stick with proven formulas for optimum success”. On the other hand, experience also
whispers “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” So change I did!
The guys provided me with 3kg, 4kg, 6kg and 8kg IG FA nylon in fluoro yellow (the hi visibility
colour enables us to see the thin line so that we can keep track of hooked fish better and also helps prevent
boats from running over their own lines when chasing fish). They also gave me 15kg, 24kg and 37kg IG FA
in Ice Blue.
For leader material I chose Momoi Hi-Catch 500lb. I noticed something different on the spool. Each
one has it’s own unique number - and not just a batch number either.
In addition, I also chose to try some Momoi fluorocarbon 400lb which I had used when fishing in
Madeira. At the time we had been trolling through massive schools of bluefin tuna with very little success
but after switching to fluorocarbon leader, results were almost immediate, with 500lb and 600lb bluefin tuna
boated.
While fluorocarbon does have many obvious advantages (such as excellent abrasion resistance, sinking
quickly, long life (not susceptible to UV) and it’s near invisibility in clear water situations making it the first
choice for trolling dead or live baits), it really does perform in a similar manner to Hi-Catch Momoi leader
when trolling lures.
Unfortunately, due to weather conditions we were unable to do a lot of live baiting this season, but I
continued to run Momoi fluorocarbon on one corner of the gear pattern.
Since we changed to Momoi Hi-Catch, we have really fished hard and punished it. The line’s come
through with flying colours. All line classes have performed extremely well.
I was told that the folks at Momoi have spent countless hours analyzing specific problems that plague
IGFA lines, such as too much stretch, too thin a diameter and ‘cases’ (or outer shells) that are too soft or
limp. Extensive testing has resulted in Momoi developing a truly superior tournament-quality game line.
Friction caused by drag pressure, and sometimes thousands of trips over various guides, usually wears
down fishing line, but this line has a tough outer ‘skin’ which provides incredible abrasion resistance.
Consequently, it lasts longer and holds up under stresses that tournament, charter and record-chasing
situations create.
Momoi Hi-Catch has also arrived at the perfect amount of line stretch for increased hook setting power
and great sensitivit y.
I keep extensive logs on the fish we catch and I know that on one particular set of gear, we caught 20
fish without needing to change the top shot, as well as tagging and releasing two blue marlin and a stripie on
the same lure without changing the leader. We checked the leader after each fish (which you should always
do) and found no reason to change.
With all these factors combined, the conclusion is that this mono lives up to it’s claims.

FLUOROCARBON LINE
Fluorocarbon has numerous characteristics that have
made it extremely popular in America. These include a thicker diameter than nylon monofilament,
less specific gravity than nylon, a lower refractive
index than nylon, resistance to any water absorpsion
and less stretch than nylon monofilament.
So if you want a line that is extremely abrasion
resistant, sinks quicker to where you want to fish, is
virtually invisible in water, maintains it’s breaking
strain in water, resists ultraviolet light and will
dramatically improve your catch rate, then we
suggest you give it a go.

HOOK SIZES, PATTERNS AND PARTS
The size of a fish hook is determined by it’s pattern; it
is given in terms of the width of the gap of the hook.
The hook sizes of other patterns are bound to differ to
some extent; the reference number of a hook should
therefore always be quoted together, and regarded as
inseparable.
In the illustration above, the various parts of a fish
hook are shown together with their names. The two
most important dimensions of the hook are it’s gap
and it’s throat. The hook shown here is a Mustad Saltwater hook. Note the width of the gap, the distance
between point and shank, and the depth of the throat
of the hook. These generous dimensions make for a
bigger bite, for deeper penetration of the point, and
for better holding power. The weight of the fish is
carried high up on the centre of the bend.
