S  Coordinator of SPI-­‐Water (FP6, 2006-­‐2008), STEP˗WISE (FP7, 2011-­‐2012) and SIPE (FP7, 2012-­‐2014): EU projects on Science-­‐Policy Interfacing. S  Managing Director of the WISE-­‐RTD Association, a non-­‐profit assiciation set up in 2008 in order to guarantee the sustainability of WISE-­‐RTD. 2
Why developing WISE-­‐RTD ? S  There is a weak link between water research and water policies, and their application both at national and European level. Both groups have difficulties to understand each others goals, needs, priorities and especially ‘language’. S  WISE-­‐RTD is a Web Portal that aims to bridge the communication & knowledge gap between policy, science and industry in the domain of water. 3

Bridging the gap on Integrated Water Management (WFD) WISE-­‐RTD was firstly launched in 2005 based upon the constatation that the implementation of the Water Framework Directive is a huge and complex issue. Guidance was needed on the implementation steps and research and experiences should be optimally shared. S  WISE-­‐RTD has ‘translated’ the EC Directive’s articles in implementation tasks on a time line. S  Relevant research was linked to this in WISE-­‐RTD. Implementation was tested in the CIS working groups and the CIS guidances were feed back into WISE-­‐RTD. 6
Bridging the gap on Floods There is little experience with the implementation of this relatively new Floods Directive (2007): S  Policy implementers need guidance on the implementation steps to take: WISE-­‐RTD has ‘translated’ the EC Directive’s articles in implementation tasks on a time line. S  FLOOD-­‐WISE (Interreg IVC) provides the pilot cases and needs to share its experiences. The linking within WISE-­‐RTD brings the related information from ‘the other side of the gap’ to the users. 7
