One thing is clear: it’s not just about shopping.
Right across Australia, trading hours are lengthening
as new-style retail precincts add entertainment
to the shopping experience and become hubs
of activity for their communities. Locals meet friends
for breakfast then pop back at midnight for a drink,
parents and prams overflow from the park to the cafés,
students pop in for some new tech between classes,
workers dash through the fresh food market on their
way to lunchtime pilates – at Central, it’ll be all go

its doors on Broadway in 2013, it’ll be surfing a wave of new retail trends
which are transforming the way we shop.
It’s “the most fascinating, daunting, challenging and ultimately
rewarding time for retail in history” according to insideretailing.com.au.
So what’s on the horizon?
Firstly, it’s not a shopping centre, it’s an experience centre. As online
shopping becomes the norm, the experience of shopping in ‘real life’ is being
challenged to become more engaging, theatrical and personal. Shops will
become more high-touch, high-tech and high-design, layered with events
and in-store experiences. Think Sony stores, on steroids.
Authenticity is big. Customers increasingly want distinctive, ‘real’ retail
experiences from brands with some history and a compelling story to tell.
Think Camper’s shoes, with names and narratives.
Values matter. Retailers are being asked to wear their green on their
sleeves, providing their products are environmentally and socially responsible.
A sizeable community of shoppers are looking for retail with heart.

Back on Broadway, Central is being designed
to meet the future full on, with wildly imaginative

food, technology, dining, recreation and entertainment
which will extend the precinct’s trading hours from early
morning gym session and 11am yum cha to late night

and intoxications of
the site’s brewing past.
A giant windsock is perched atop the heritage-listed 52
metre tall chimney of the iconic Irving Street Brewery at the Central Park
development site in Sydney’s Chippendale.
Windwatcher, by acclaimed artist Mikala Dwyer, flies high from
the chimney stack, ‘dancing’ in the wind and mesmerizing passers-by
with what the artist describes as a “simple but profound” reminder not
just of the sky, but of the majestic force of the wind.
This second installment of Central Park’s $450,000 Artists In Residence
public art project was unveiled mid 2011 and will remain in place for a year
or so until restoration work on the Brewery Yard precinct begins.
The huge windsock is made of synthetic canvas, measuring 10.5 metres
in length and two metres in diameter at the throat, tapering to the tail.
The windsock will fly according to the direction of the wind, providing
the 100,000 people who pass down Broadway each day with a creative
new indicator of the day’s weather and – for many – a spontaneous grin
at the wit and whimsy of this monumental piece of public art.
The Artists In Residence project was conceived and developed by
art consultants and acclaimed public artists Jennifer Turpin and Michaelie
Crawford, and curated by Anne Loxley. Their intention was to gradually
transform the much-loved Irving Street Brewery building and chimney
stack with a group of bold and imaginative ‘residents’ who take occupancy
with their arresting and mostly sculptural interventions.
Each artist had been given free rein to create an artwork that will not
only contribute to the creative character of the Chippendale community,
but would also be inspired by – according to Michaelie Crawford –
“the history, fluids, processes and intoxications of the site’s brewing past”.

Local Memory by Brook Andrew was the first artwork to launch the project –
18 monumental neon-framed photographic portraits of locals who have
been in some way associated with the brewery throughout its working history.
The engineering involved in these massive installations – onto protected
heritage buildings – is complex, and involves some innovative thinking.
Windwatcher was put through rigorous testing to ensure it would
withstand harsh weather conditions. In August, a prototype windsock
was taken to Eastern Creek Raceway, affixed to a car and raced around
the track at various speeds – simulating various wind conditions.
“It was certainly one of the more unusual experiences of my creative
life to date,” said artist Mikala Dwyer.
Artists In Residence forms part of Central Park’s extraordinary $8 million
public art programme which includes temporary work designed to enliven
the site during construction, as well as permanent works embedded within
the parks, streetscapes and buildings of Central Park.
Patrick Blanc’s organic artworks and Yann Kersale’s lighting installation
– both integrated into Jean Nouvel’s One Central Park towers – will be
highlights of the public art collection.
Designed to intrigue and delight the people of Sydney, this remarkable
art collection will also allow pause to consider in myriad and open-ended
ways, the history, nature and future of Central Park.
