Scrapping on a Budget
Crops and Friends: Crops are a good way to
do scrapbooking on a budget. Most places that
have cr ops have machines that they let you
use. You pay $5-$10 and you get to use Cricuts,
trimmers, die cutting machines, or anything
the store has. Another good way is to befriend
other scrapbookers. This way you can pool your
resources.
Yard Sales: Check out yar d/garage sales to
see if they have any scrapping tools or supplies.
This is also a good way to make some money if
you have extra, unused supplies.
Discount stor es: Ther e ar e some stor es that
have only discounted items. I love shopping at
Ollie’s and Pat Catan’s. They always have gr eat
scrapping items for cheap.
Online Photo printing: Digital photography
has really made scrapbooking nice. You can see
your pictures and pick thr u them before getting
them printed. But it is still pr etty pricey if you
are getting a lot of prints. There are some online
sites that have sales on photo printing. Shutterfly
and Snapfish are two sites that are always having
sales such as penny prints. So saving up your pictures and printing in bulk can really pay off.
Coupons Coupons Coupons (& Sales): All
the craft stores have coupons. Use them! If you
find something you r eally like that you need
now, tr y and use a coupon. Michaels, Jo-Ann’s,
and Pat Catan’s all have coupons that you can
use, and even our local Scrap Booking Expr essions store has special sales and coupons. And
as always, try and wait to buy supplies on sale.
Greeting Cards, Wrapping Paper, & Bags:
You can use the pictur es fr om gift wraps and
cards as embellishments for pages. This is also
a great way to include car ds you want to keep.
Use the gr eeting or note as jour naling on your
pages.
Die Cutting Machines: Buying a die cutting
machine could be a very good investment for
someone who does a lot of scrapbooking. No
need to buy letter stickers, and r eally cut back
on your other embellishment purchases.

It’s as American as Baseball and Apple Pie but it
doesn’t get any respect. It has the reputation of being
made of ever ything but meat. They may be looked
upon as an inexpensive lunch by people today but at
one time they wer e given to people to celebrate the
coronation of kings.
A sausage similar to the hot dog comes fr
om Frankfurt, Germany in the 13th century. This pork stuffed
casing was br ought to V ienna, Austria by a butcher
in the 18th century where beef was added to the mix.
The name “wiener” is actually a r eference to V ienna. It seems strange though that today in Ger man
speaking countries the sausage is called a wiener ,
except in Austria wher e it’s called a Frankfur ter. I
may have misunderstood but that’s what I took away
from what I read.
The longest hot dog ever made was 197 feet long. It
was cradled in a bun that was 198 feet. The bun was
actually the star of the show though. This prize winner was made for the 50th Anniversar y Celebration
of the All-Japan Br ead Association in T okyo, Japan
in 2006.
The most expensive hot dog is called the “California Capitol City Dawg.” If you want to tr y one you’ll
have to go to “Capitol Dawg” in Sacramento. It’s
dressed with ten different toppings and condiments.
Most are domestic, some are imported. This 3 lb.,
18” cr eation fetches $145.49. It is hear twarming to
know that the pr oceeds fr om each one pur chased
goes to the Shriners Hospitals for Childr en. Wow,
something good IS going on in the state capitol.
Placing a hot dog on a bun is cr edited to Anton
Feuchtwanger’s wife. (I’m thinking of changing my
last name.) While selling hot dogs on the str
eets
of St. Louis, Anton would lend white gloves to the
customers to protect them from being burned. They
were doing a brisk business selling them at the
1893 World’s Fair, but people wer e making of f with
the gloves and keeping them as souvenirs. Anton’s
wife had a per fect solution and we have the sandwich that we know and love today. For tunately the
Feuchtwangers didn’t decide to attatch their sur
name
to the pr oduct. “Get your r ed hot Feuchtwanger!”
No, forget that, I’ll sell peanuts.
There are several tall tales that make a claim to the
origin of the accepted name that we use on our side
of the Atlantic. One stor y is that a New Y ork Post
cartoonist was attempting to captur e the marketing
skills of a dachshund sandwich vendor at an event at
the Polo Grounds. After sketching out a cartoon with
a dachshund dog in a bun he became unsur e of the
proper spelling of the breed.
Another stor y gives cr edit to”T ad” Dor gan. He
drew a car toon of a hot dog seller while attending a
bicycle race at Madison Square Garden. No copy has
been found of that 1906 car toon from the New York
Evening Exchange.

years.) Prior to being visibly sick, an infected deer will begin shedding prions that can potentially infect other deer.
When an infected deer begins displaying CWD symptoms,
it is not a pr etty sight. The deer will behave abnor mally,
standing with poor postur e or staggering, and begin to
lose body functions. Other cervid diseases, such as Epizootic Hemmor hagic Disease (a vir us spr ead by a small
midges commonly found in southeaster n states), cause
similar symptoms and a positive CWD diagnosis can only
be made post-mortem by the characteristic small brain lesions that cause death. If you encounter a deer displaying
CWD-like symptoms, accurately r ecord the animal’s location and contact the nearest PGC region office. PGC guidance is to not disturb, kill, or remove the animal.
Resear ch by the U.S. Centers for Disease Contr ol and
the World Health Organization has found no evidence that
the CWD prion af fects humans. However , public health
officials r ecommend that humans avoid CWD exposur e.
Hunters should take the following precautions: (1) Do not
shoot, handle, or consume an animal that appears sick.
(2) Wear disposable gloves when fi eld-dressing and thoroughly wash your hands and instruments after field-dressing. (3) Bone out the meat from your animal and minimize
handling of brain and spinal tissues. (4) Ask your deer
processor to process the meat fr om your animal individually, without meat from other animals, or process your own
meat. (5) Consider having your animal tested, and do not
consume meat from any animal that tests positive.
Deer harvested within a DMA must be taken to a PGC
check station or par ticipating deer processor/taxidermist
and will be tested for CWD at no cost to the hunter. Hunters who har vest a deer elsewher e in P A can have them
tested for a fee by the P A Animal Diagnostic Laborator y
System. The phone numbers of their thr ee laboratories
are available on the PGC’s website. Hunters taking deer
within a DMA need to follow the PGC’s CWD Executive Order, while those har vesting a cer vid (deer, elk, or
moose) in another CWD positive state or pr ovince must
follow the PGC’s Par ts Ban (see the 2013-14 Hunting &
Trapping Digest) and the specifi c guidance of the other
state/province’s wildlife agency. CWD is now a r eality in
PA and our actions will impact the future of our deer herd.

1 C. butter or margarine, softened
1/3 C. confectioners’ sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3/4 tsp. almond extract
2 C. all-purpose flour
1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) instant pistachio pudding mix
1/2 C. miniature chocolate chips
2 C. finely chopped pecans
FILLING:
2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, softened
2 C. confectioners’ sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 to 3 Tbsp. milk
GLAZE: (optional)
1/2 C. semisweet chocolate chips
2 tsp. shortening
In a mixing bowl, cr eam butter and sugar until
smooth. Add egg and extracts; mix well. Combine
flour and pudding mix; add to the cr eamed mixture. Stir in chocolate chips. Shape into 1” balls;
roll in nuts. Place 2” apar t on gr eased baking
sheets; make a thumbprint in center of cookie.
Bake at 350 0 for 10-12 minutes. Remove to a wir e
rack to cool. For fi lling, cr eam butter, sugar, vanilla and milk, spoon into center of cooled cookies. For glaze, if desired, melt chocolate chips and
shortening; drizzle over cookies. Let stand until
set. Yield: about 7 dozen.
