don’t worry - your identity will be always protected. It’s kind of a
“reality show” - or better a “reality column”. If you want to converse

The Beginning

ast month I wrote an article called “Men are from
Mars, Women are… Crazy!”. I know it’s dangerous
to use the “C” word with women, but I wanted to get
my frustrations out… however biased they may be. I
honestly thought it would be a one time thing and after
it hit print I could kick back, grab a beer and wait for
the hate mail.
My editor had other ideas.
Before I knew it, she had put together a promo
about a monthly column - this column, where I
would presumably write about my dating life in all its
disastrous… glory? That sounded kind of scary. It’s
one thing to play a part in a TV show - pretending to
put your love life in print- it’s another thing entirely to
actually do it.
I’ve thought about this extensively. I’ve weighed
the pros and cons considering the effects a column
like this might have on my life. My biggest concern
is probably the same one you’re thinking about right
now - what girl in her right mind would want to date me
knowing there is a huge possibility part of her private
life will end up in print? I know… right?! After going
over all of this, I have come to a conclusion.
I’ll do it.
But if I’m really going to do this - and do it rightwe (you and me) have to start out on an even plane
informationally. To take this journey, hopefully learning
something along the way, I have to be up-front and
honest with you the reader. It’s the only way you will
know where I’m coming from.
Before we get into it, and I open my proverbial
veins, you need to be armed with some background.
I have never been very skilled at risking myself
emotionally. On a nice comfy couch, talking with a twohundred dollar an hour “friend”, I’m sure I could trace
it all back to trust issues developed during childhood.

But that doesn’t really count anymore. I’m 31 and fully
capable of making my own decisions, regardless of
what happened to me when I was a kid.
My point is, I have spent the better part of my life
as an emotional first grader and it has hurt every single
adult relationship I’ve ever attempted.
My track record: I date a girl long enough for them
to fall for me, and I may fall for them too, but for some
reason when it comes down to committing I just can’t
do it. Then, after enough time has gone by for them to
get fed up, I decide I’m ready. By that time of course
they’re done and ready to move on. This is the cycle
and it blows.
About two years ago I got involved with a woman
named Betty (I’m changing names). Betty worked her
ass off trying to get to me. To this day I’m not sure if
she was doing it all to get close to me, or because she
just couldn’t stand seeing something broken without
trying to fix it. Whatever the reason, it worked.
Suddenly I was depending on someone else for part
of my happiness. I found myself trusting someone in
ways I never had before… it scared the H-E-doublehockey-sticks out of me but I didn’t care. I wanted to
make someone else happy and I was finally willing to
risk myself to do it. Guess what happened next.
She crushed me. You know what? I don’t even
know if ‘crushed’ is the word. She cartoon-pianoed my
newly opened heart like a gimmicky, jokeless comedian
smashing watermelons.
It was bad. It hurt. I cried. I suffered. Time went by.
I healed.
Then she came back and did it again!
But here’s the thing- it didn’t kill me. And what
I mean by that is, although the whole experience was
excruciating, when I came out the other end I was fine.
Actually better than fine. I realized that when Betty put
the hurt on me, she didn’t wipe out my new ability to
trust. And now that I’m over her, I find myself - maybe
for the first time ever- emotionally available and ready
to start again with a completely clean slate.
Now, I know I’m not completely innocent here. I’m
far from being a down hearted victim in need of help.
I’ve been around and I’ve broken my own share of
hearts. I’d like to think it’s all been part of my learning
curve but that might just be me trying to ease my guilt
with some justification… there really is none. I do think
that part of my life is over though and I’m ready to…
well...grow up.
I lived for years in the envelope of a band, hiding
behind my guitar. Talking to girls under the neon moon
is easy, so I let myself do it. Now I know I was being
a coward. I had a lot of fun… a lot of fun. But after a
while it’s hard not to notice the rest of the world passing
you by.
There it is, my friend. That’s my romantic history
in a nutshell (always hated that term), give or take a
couple decade’s worth of details.
So, now I begin again. New territory, new adventure.
Let’s see what happens when a reformed bad-boy takes
a stab at life and love in the daylight of adulthood. I’ll
meet you back here in a month and we’ll discuss my
progress… or lack of.

I
recall the first conversation that I had with Brevard Live
editor Heike Clarke regarding the BMAs way back in
1999. Although we were both immediately enthusiastic
about staging a local version of the Grammys, it would be
another five years before our vision would finally come to
fruition.
Nearly a decade has now passed since that initial
dialogue and the Brevard Live Music Awards have become
THE premier musical event on the Space Coast. The BL
staff now dedicates eight months a year to the production
and promotion of this annual party. It is an expensive
proposition indeed and we couldn‘t pull it off without
the continued support of the community and our faithful
sponsors. And for this I‘d like to extend a heartfelt, “Thank
you.”
As I’m writing this, I’m on tour with the band Poison.
It’s nearly 4AM and we’re traveling from Holmdel, NJ
to Richmond, VA. I’m tired as heck and I think our tour
bus driver is hitting every concievable bump along the
way. In short order, the last thing I want to be doing right
now is writing an article, especially another one about the
BMAs.
But I believe in local music. Anyone who knows me
knows that I’ve been carrying the flag for the scene here in
Brevard County since I booked my first concert at DeLaura
Jr. High School at the age of 15 back in 1978. So here I sit,
barely able to keep my eyes open, writing another article
about the cause that I’ve fought for so passionately for the
last 30 years.
This year’s ceremony is NOT about winning OR losing
awards. It’s about a celebration of music and honoring
our area talent. People get dressed up for this event. They
rent limos, mingle and take in exciting live performances.
Simply put, it’s a party!
Yes, it’s true. After months of preparation, promotion
and speculation, the annual BMAs are finally here! It’s
all happening at 6 pm, Monday, September 8th at the
fabulous Henegar Performing Arts Center, located in
historic downtown Melbourne. I will return to host this
year’s show and The Danny Morris Band will also reprise
their role as the show’s house band. Although tickets are
still available, a sellout crowd is expected at show time.
As in previous years, more than a dozen awards will be
handed out to top vote getters including several specialty
award winners chosen by the BL-staff. However, this
year’s show will also feature amazing live performances
from some of the area’s top new and upcoming artists. And
to further freshen the format, I’ve personally tapped local
wise-guy Brian Arnold, of Tango Palace and the Greg
& Brian Band to come onboard this year as my official
sidekick. And then there’s the infamous after-party being
held this year at Lou’s Blues in Indialantic featuring an
all-star post ceremony jam hosted by Kenny Michaels.
It’s going to be an unbelievable night. From musicians,
friends, family and fans to club owners, agents and
members of the local press, everyone who’s anyone is
gonna be there. If I seem more excited than usual about
this year’s event it’s because I am. And I just wanted to
take this final opportunity to invite each of you to come
out and experience the party of the year. See ya there!

he New Riders of the Purple Sage, signed to Columbia
Records by Clive Davis, released its eponymous first
album in September 1971 to widespread acclaim. In the
next 11 years the band toured and released over 12 albums,
selling over 4 million records. NRPS began as a part-time
spin-off from the Grateful Dead when Jerry Garcia (pedal
steel guitar), Phil Lesh (bass) and Mickey Hart (drums)
teamed up with John Dawson (guitar, vocals) and David
Nelson (guitar). By 1971 Dave Torbert had replaced Lesh,
and Spencer Dryden, formerly of Jefferson Airplane, had
joined as the group’s permanent drummer. Garcia remained
in both The Dead and The New Riders until he found himself
over committed, at which time Buddy Cage replaced him
and the classic NRPS lineup was born. Original NRPS
bass player Dave Torbert and drummer Spencer Dryden
have passed away, and co-founder John Dawson cannot
lend his considerable talents at this time due to ongoing
health problems but has given his blessing and is excited
to know his music is being heard live again to a whole new
generation of fans. The new lineup vows to keep the NRPS
spirit and tunes alive by taking them to fans everywhere.
D
avid Nelson has managed the seemingly impossible.
He has remained true to his musical vision and integrity
without becoming outdated or archaic in the process.
Nelson, an important figure in the musical vanguard of
the influential Haight-Ashbury music scene, spawned the
Grateful Dead. His ties to Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter
extend beyond that with The Wildwood Boys, a bluegrass
band they formed together in 1962 in Palo Alto, CA. After
the Dead got together, Nelson played guitar on three pivotal
albums, Aoxomoxoa, Workingman’s Dead and American
Beauty.
Not only has Buddy Cage sold over four million records
in his ten years with the NRPS, but he has also performed
on many gold and platinum albums during his distinguished
career including Blood On The Tracks (Dylan), Biograph
(Dylan), The Official Bootleg Tapes (Dylan) and various
releases with Ann Murray. Cage has also recorded with
Grateful Dead Members Garcia, Weir and Hart as well
as with Dead lyricist Robert Hunter (on Tales of the Rum
Runners).
Guitarist/singer/songwriter Michael Falzarano has most
notably been a member of Hot Tuna, the famed offspring
of The Jefferson Airplane, and The Memphis Pilgrims, a
Memphis-style rock‘n’roll/blues band that he founded in
1986. Having recently signed with Blues Planet Records,
Falzarano’s current release is a solo project, The King
James Sessions. He has toured the world on shared billings
with The Allman Brothers, Black Crowes, The Other Ones,
Rusted Root, Bruce Hornsby and Los Lobos.
Ronnie Penque has been playing music for over 30
years. When not working with NRPS or his band Neon
Gods, which includes his brother Chris Penque on guitar,
Ron is busy as a session player. Ronnie started out as the
original bass player in the popular Grateful Dead cover
band Ripple.
Johnny Markowski, an accomplished drummer, can be
found playing his kit these days with The New Riders of the
Purple Sage. When not on the road with The NRPS, Johnny
works with his band, Stir Fried, and plays with various
artists in many styles.

SENSES FAIL

n Tuesday, October 14, punk-rock
screams and high-charged emotion
will pour from the stage at Captain Hiram’s as rockers, Senses Fail, perform
live. The show will begin at 6:30 pm.
Now I know we’re a month ahead on this
one but we want to make sure, you’re in
the know and ready for this upcoming
mega-show. In case you don’t already
know who Senses Fail is, here are some
interesting factoids.
T
he band has graced the pages of influential music
magazines such as Kerrang!, Rolling Stone, and
Spin. Warped Tour veterans, Senses Fail, even made it
on to the cover of the Alternative Press. After touring
around the nation with bands like New Found Glory
Finch, The Used, and The Startling Line, the band has
created a serious following. How the band got its start
is where it really gets interesting. Ever wanted to know
how to start a “screamo-punk-emo” band? Here’s the
Senses Fail formula: Start with an internet ad stating
your intentions to create a band, wait around until a
drummer dials you up and brings along a ready-made
rhythm section. Walla, you’ve got yourself a band.
In 2002, aspiring front-man Buddy Nielsen put
out an internet ad seeking to recruit members. Shortly
thereafter, Dan Trapp (drums) and his friends Dave
Miller (guitar) and Garrett Zablocki (guitar) responded to the call. Later the group was joined by bassist
Mike Glita, the former Tokyo Rose drummer. But really this was just the beginning. The real work came
after the band had formed. Senses Fail worked from
the ground-up, playing shows anywhere, from skate
parks, to clubs to churches.
Later that year the group went into the studio to
make what would become its debut disk, “From the
Depths of Dreams.” The disk did so well independently that Drive-Thru Records decided to pick it up and
re-release it in 2003. The CD climbed onto the charts,
making it to 144 on Billboard. Not bad for less than
two years!
Since the release of its first album, Senses Fail
Florida Live
has moved in only one direction: upward. The group’s
sophomore effort “Let it Enfold You” (2004), moved
more than a quarter of a million albums. Some have said
the album title comes from a Charles Bukowski poem.
The album also featured a song, “The Irony of Dying on
Your Birthday,” about mythologist Joseph Campbell.
The group really made a mark with its disk, “Still
Searching” (2006), selling 850,000 copies and rising to
number 15 on Billboard. Six years after its formation,
the band has gone through serious changes. Miller has
since been replaced on guitar by Heath Saraceno. Mike
Glita also left the group to pursue other projects and has
been temporarily replaced by Jason Black.
Despite these changes, 2008 is lined-up to be an im-
portant year for the band. Senses Fail has its sights set
on doing big things with its latest album, “Life is Not a
Waiting Room.” The disk is due out in October 2008.

e pull up to the Metro Entertainment, an old double screen movie theater cum weekend concert venue, in West Melbourne, Florida. I’m here for a band I’ve been hearing about for a
couple of years, but never actually seen. Tonight they are headlining a multiband show…all metal.
I’m not the biggest fan of hardcore, but there IS a bar and I’m counting on this band to be different, so I brought some friends to make a night of it.
t’s Saturday night. The music will be provided by Lydia
Can’t Breathe. Put on your best black shirt, grab some
eye-liner and tell your parents you hate them… this is a
metal show and tonight- you’re with the band!
Someone asked me the other day how I could write
about a genre I hate. It’s not true, I don’t hate metal. I’m
just not a blanket fan. I take it on a band-by-band basis and
form my opinion according to each artist. Truth is - most
of the time it just sounds like the same band to me: loud
distorted guitars in a drop-tuning for that dark and ominous
tone, fast double-kick and as many cymbal crashes as the
drummer can fit in, barely audibly picked bass lines and of
course the singer/screamer growling pseudo-poetic lyrics –
that you can’t understand - about how bad his life is. That
being said… I love Lydia Can’t Breathe. These guys are
great musicians. They work hard and their arrangements
show it.
This is Lydia: Kyle Bolduc, Dan Wilson, Dirk Grobb,
Josh Runfeldt and Shad(rach) Roundy.
The first guy I see as I walk in is Kyle Bolduc the lead
singer. Right off it’s easy to get a confusing impression of
this guy. He has a conservative hairstyle, no visible tattoos
or piercings and dresses like a collegiate tennis player. His
unassuming style and polite manner throw me some. He
doesn’t exactly fit the typical profile of a hardcore lead
singer. No ego, no goth make-up. He’s just a normal guy
and I love that. As a matter of fact, everyone in this band is
very, very nice to me. No one is trying to push a fake image; they are musicians and they play music.
“The show is running a little late tonight, but I hope
you can hang out and catch our set”, Kyle says so politely I
almost think I hear him say “sir”...but that’s just my imagination.
We grab a table off to the side and dig in with a couple
of beers each, ready to wait out the bands ahead of Lydia.
Looking around, I realize that the Metro hasn’t changed
- ever. I’ve been coming here almost my entire life and it’s
always been the same. I came here to see “Back to the Future” for my eightth birthday. The lobby still doubles as a
pool hall/bar. It still smells like beer and popcorn. There
are still old movie posters papering the walls. The only addition might be the karaoke stage on the left side of the
room.
A couple years ago the new owners decided to try and
turn the theater into a music venue on Friday and Saturday
nights. I’ll be honest and say, I never thought it would work.
Because of city ordinance, the bars in West Melbourne have
to close by midnight. Thinking that most people don’t even
go out until ten-thirty or eleven, I just didn’t think it would
last. I was wrong. The Metro hosts shows every weekend
and even webcasts them.
Every once in a while, someone walks through the
door going in or out of the theater where we are waiting to
see Lydia perform in. When they do, we get to hear about 5
seconds of whoever is onstage. I can’t be sure, but sounds
to me like the cookie monster is pulling vocal duty with
most of the bands playing tonight.
All around us the lifestyle is alive, and I can’t help
but feel like I’m looking through a window into a foreign
world. Everybody is wearing black. Why so much black?
Can’t other colors be angry too?
The one I can relate to is how much these people love
the bands they are here to see. They are true fans. Of course,
there are some kids here that just want to feel wild and out
of control… a little dangerous even, but there are bands all
over town that play loud and fast - these people came to see
Lydia.
Finally it’s time and ee head in. The room fills up fast
and, once again, I’m vindicated in my decision to come
tonight.
This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this band. I was lucky
enough to be part of a very small audience for a very special show in a very small room. That day, when the band
was setting up, I remember feeling a little nervous watching two guys carry in Runfeldt’s monstrous drum kit. It’s
been my experience that drummers with the least amount
of equipment tend to be the tightest. He proved me wrong.
Rundfeldt holds his band together with fantastic timing and
control, and zero overplay.

the first number, and I’m thinking about how glad I am that
I was at that private show. In the studio I could hear everything: every lick, kick and lyric. The sound sucks tonight at
the Metro. It’s muddy and distorted. The sound guy seems
to lean heavy on the low-end side of the dial. Funny thing
about that… I can’t hear the bass at all- a disservice to a
solid player like Roundy. The biggest disappointment is
that I can’t hear the intertwining guitar lines being played
by Wilson and Grobb. That’s what really got my attention
in the first place.
Regardless of the sound, the boys still play a great show
and everyone is having a good time.
Lydia breaks into the crowd favorite of the night - a ditty about indulging in the cronic with a very cool Eminem
style scat in the breakdown. I look towards the front of the
crowd and see a pretty, red headed girl dancing along to the music. She couldn’t be more
than nineteen and doesn’t look like she’s
been to a show like this before. I have to
chuckle knowing this is probably a ‘walk on
the wild side’ for her.
Kyle introduces the next song as a tribute to
a fallen friend. And I’m glad they are playing
this one because we get to hear him sing…
and the boy can. The song begins very melodically and hushed. Then it builds into a
controlled chaos. Filled with little Easter egg
surprises and very cool timing changes, this
is probably MY favorite of the night.
Their set isn’t very long tonight, but with
all the energy these guys exert, it’s amazing they even went
this long. You can tell they love what they do with all their
hearts, and those kinds of players will always have a special
place with me.
Lydia Can’t Breathe is nothing like I thought they would
be and I feel stupid for even having a preconceived opinion. It’s true that this really isn’t my scene. But the boys
in Lydia are real musicians - serious musicians - and that
makes them my kind of band. I know you’ve seen the bumper stickers around town, I’m sure you’ve seen the t-shirts.

Rich Salick:
FOR THE LOVE OF SURFING

Beyond the beach, bikinis, and beer, the Annual Cocoa Beach Surf Company NKF Pro
Am Surf Festival is about helping to give people a second chance at living. The festival
began as a benefit for chronically ill dialysis patients. To date, it has raised over five
million dollars for programs at the National Kidney Foundation of Florida.
T
o understand the history of the festival is to understand
the history of co-founder and former pro surfer Rich
Salick. He was a member of the original Dewey Weber
Surf Team in the 60s, the US Surfing Team in 72, and went
on to sign contracts to endorse a prominent California surfboard. But as Salick’s career was taking off, his health took
a nose dive when his kidney began troubling him. He literally went from exploring the oceans of the world with his
surfboard to having trouble doing rudimentary activities.
Salick was given a chance to continue his life when
his twin brother Phil gave him one of his kidneys in 1974.
But that was just the beginning of Salick’s arduous journey
back to recovery. After he adjusted to the medications that
assisted his transplant operation, Salick’s desire to surf left
him wanting to do more than survive, he wanted to live.
For a surfer like Salick, living meant surfing. “The concept
of ‘you have your life back, just take it easy’ did not sit
well with me,” said Salick. “I was 23 when I got sick. Some
things just aren’t fair.”
At the time Salick’s doctors discouraged any thought
of surfing again as the location of the transplanted kidney
made him vulnerable to life-threatening injury. Salick’s desire to surf couldn’t be stopped. Inspired by Cypress Gardens’ use of “ensolite,” the material used to make water ski
jackets, Salick developed a padding system that protected
his transplanted kidney. While most doctors continued to
recommend against his returning to surfing, Salick found
an ally in Dr. Robert Cade. Dr. Cade, famed for the invention of Gatorade, gave Salick the OK to return to the water.
“Dr. Robert Cade was my Nephrologist when I was
first diagnosed in Gainesville at Shands Teaching Hospital
at the University of Florida,” explained Salick. “We became
friends through a year long relationship through dialysis
pre-transplant and then post-transplant. After transplant I
had a separation of church and state with my physicians
but won over a few and prevailed in the long run with Dr.
Cade’s encouragement. I had invented an “ensolite padding” with the help of the famed Cypress Gardens and we
were off to the races.”

alick returned to surfing with a vengeance. Not only
was he able to surf, he was a serious competitor. “I won
the second event I surfed in and continued as a professional
for over three more years,” said Salick.
But this return was not easy. At the time Salick spent
more than eight hours three days a week on a kidney dialysis machine. So exemplarily was his example that Contemporary Dialysis Magazine recognized Salick as the first
athlete ever to return to professional level competition after
a kidney transplant.
Salick’s determination can be attributed to his absolute love of surfing, which he dates back to his first wave.
“I clearly remember the first wave I took on Anna Maria
Island in 1964,” he said. “My whole family lived on the
beach and it just fit; my mom encouraged us; the whole
lifestyle. I was so hungry to do well I used to leave my
girlfriend home to head to Cocoa Beach with Phil. So many
times we would stay in the water for 8 hours a day. Meeting Bob Carson, Mike Tabeling, Bruce Valluzzi and Gary
Propper changed it all. We were so hungry for our abilities
to flourish.”
Salick’s love for surfing not only kept his long neck
in the water, it also helped launch one of the premier surfing festivals on the East Coast. Approached by The Dr.
C. Craig Tisher, Chief of Nephrology at the University
of Florida, about creating a national surfing tournament,
Salick helped create the National Kidney Foundation ProAm Surfing Program. Proving how the event has impacted
peoples’ lives, Salick said that the surfing festival will be
“bringing in transplant and dialysis patients that surf from
all over the country.”

ver the years Salick’s struggle to survive and live a
fullife has continued. Around the same time he began
working to establish the national surf festival Salick discovered he would need a second surgery and a new kidney.
At the time Salick’s brothers, Channing, stepped up to save
his life. Twelve years later, in 1999, Salick needed yet another transplant. This time his younger brother Wilson did
the job of giving his brother a third lease on life.
These days Salick doesn’t surf as much as he’d like to.
“I went through 6 years of severe cancer therapy, surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy and some of the surfing
switches are still turned off,” said Salick. “It is hard work
but I keep my boards ready. Plus it is not as easy when you
have some years on you.”
While Salick struggles to achieve his physical goals
this time around, his determination to help others realize
life after transplant and dialysis remains. Today Salick
works as the Director of Community Relations at the National Kidney Foundation of Florida Inc. and continues to
organize the NKF of Florida Surf Festival. Over the years
he has amassed numerous awards for his surfing and his
advocacy on behalf of transplant and dialysis patients.
What’s the achievement is his proudest of? “April of
this year my younger son David and I were inducted into
the USA Black Belt Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Ohio,”
said Salick. “Mine was certainly more Emeritus status than
David, an 8 time Grand Champion. He was recognized as
the Grand National Champion of the Year.”
“But for a surfer, the induction into the Surfing Hall of
Fame in January of 2000 was more than I could have asked
for. I also want to be known as a father that freely gave up
a lot to have so much good time with his sons.”

They’re heeeere!
O
.K., so you either believe in aliens or you don’t.
Some people swear to the fact that they were
abducted. Hundreds of people at a time see a UFO and
it gets explained as a “weather balloon” or some tricky
lightning situation. Some say there is a great Government
conspiracy (naaah, they’d never do THAT!). Others
believe that there is a greater chance of Republicans
restoring the Constitution than the existence of aliens.
Who’s right? Well, personally, I think that the odds of
there being aliens is a lot greater than the odds that they
don’t. I also think that it is a pretty pompous view that
we’re the most intelligent creatures in the universe. Just
look who we “elected” as our fearless leader… TWICE!
Anyway, let’s see what we can find out.
Now, I know this is absolutely true because I saw it on
the internet (didn’t have to use “the google”, either). For
those of you who want to check it out, here’s the address:

This is an incredible story told by Capt. John Lear, a
retired pilot who flew a few missions for the CIA between
1966 and 1983. He claims that the government is covering
up far more than we think. The story unfolds thusly:
General James H. Doolittle went to Sweden in 1946
to investigate a report of ‘ghost rockets’. There were
thousands that had been sighted over a 7 month period.
Only a few people knew the truth and described the beings
as “ugly little creatures, shaped like praying mantises and
who were more advanced than us by perhaps as much as a
billion years.” In 1947, Pres. Truman put together the MJ12, the twelve top scientists and military people of the day.
The last one of the group, Gordon Grey, former Secretary
of the Army, died in 1984. As each passed, someone was
picked to take their place. The MJ-12 still exists today.
In the late 1940’s, there were several more crashes.
Roswell, NM, one in the Aztec, and one south of Laredo,
TX. Now, the US government at the time was feeling
pretty powerful, you know, winning a world war, building
the most powerful bomb on the planet, making a plane
that could break the speed of sound, etc. After seeing
the reaction of people after hearing Orson Wells’ “War
of the Worlds” a few years earlier, it’s no wonder they
would keep the REAL aliens a secret. Then the fun
begins….
“On April 25, 1964, the first official communication
between these aliens and the U S Government took place
at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. 3 saucers
landed at a pre-arranged area for a meeting to be held
between the aliens and intelligence officers of the U S
Government.” They communicate telepathically. Here’s
the deal: In exchange for technology, the government
would keep quiet about the abductions and the cow
mutilations (remember that?)! The aliens said they were
merely monitoring the development of our civilization.
But wait….it gets better!!
After all this, they find out the REAL reasons for
the abductions:
(1) Insertion of 3 mm spherical device through the nasal
cavity of the abductee into the brain. The device is used
for the biological monitoring, tracking and control of
the abductee. (Well that explains George Bush!)
(2) Implementation of post hypnotic suggestion to carry
out a specific activity during a specific time period, the
actuation of which will occur within the next 2 to 5
years.
(3) Termination of some people so that they could
function as living sources for biological material and
substances
(4) Termination of individuals who represent a threat to
the continuation of their activity.
(5) Effect genetic engineering experiments.
(6) Impregnation of human females and early termination
of pregnancies to procure the crossbred infant.
Apparently, their digestive system doesn’t work too
well so they need our enzymes and hormones to stay
alive! Does this sound like a Stephen King movie?
Now, being the wise guy that I am, I say (in my best
Brooklyn-ese) LEMME TAWK TO EM! Let’s see if
they can hear this: “Yo! You slimy, conniving, corpusalsnortin’ piece of alien sh*t!! Don’t make me come ova
dere! You want I shood smack you?” Well, hey! My
main concern is word peace. Intergalactic peace? I’ll
leave that to our fearless government officials.

his picture is totally rude, crude and lewd, dude.
Pineapple Express is a stupid stoner story and
moronic Mary Jane movie high on madcap mayhem.
In what is basically a reefer chase movie, in which the
novelty wears thin by mid-picture, it is a bong-bastic
buddy flick. This killer weed action film is complimented
by a fairly amusing tandem of Rogen and Franco, but
they ain’t no Cheech and Chong. And this movie does
end up in smoke. C-
Dark Knight
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine,
Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman. Aaron Eckhart &
Maggie Gyllenhaal
Rated PG 13. Running time: 140 Minutes
I
n what is destined to become the biggest Box Office
champion in history, this is director Christopher Nolan’s
darker and deeper follow-up to his 2005 flick Batman
Begins. And it must be noted that Heath is a hoot! The
late Ledger, that is, turns into an incredible powerhouse
of a performance as the diabolically evil mastermind
Joker. He is creepily fascinating as he puts the “terror” in
terrorist and the “sick” in sick puppy. He is truly a crazed,
cackling, kingpin of criminal chaos, not playing with a
full deck as he kills, tortures, maims, steals and blows
things up just to satisfy his demented psyche. He wants
to maniacally bring Gotham City to its knees. His caped
and cowled crime fighting hero nemesis wants the city to
remain standing tall.
Ledger, as well as this overlong but entertaining
movie should garner Oscar nods. Bale is back as the
title character and his alter ego Bruce Wayne, the steeljawed playboy billionaire. This time the Batman endures
an inner battle with morality as he has been branded an
outlaw vigilante. Also returning are Oscar winners Caine
as Alfred, Wayne’s butler and confidant, and Freeman as
Fox, the Dark Knight’s go-to gadget guy. New to the mix
is Eckhart, a credible actor who doubles as Harvey Dent,
the brave new D.A., and 2 Face, the terribly disfigured
bad guy with a worse attitude. But naturally the key
showdown is between the Caped Crusader and the Jaded
Joker. After Batman, this movie belongs to the jokester,
as frightening as he is given to jesting. Ledger is almost
unrecognizable with his creepy clown makeup and scarred
and painted-on smile. He has reinvented the movie role
made famous by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton’s 1989
Batman.
Nicholson’s line from that movies sums it up for
Ledger’s sinister and tortured soul, “Wait’ll they get a
load of me!” This movie with its grand scope and vast
complexity more than lives up to its hype. Nolan has
made an epic action adventure movie that gets 2 thumbs
and 2 big toes up as it out-delivers both Iron Man & the
Incredible Hulk. A

Starring: Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper, Kelsey
Grammer, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci ,
Madeline Carroll.
Rated PG 13. Running Time: 115 Minutes
T
he very likable Costner is back after a turn as a serial
killer in Mr. Brooks. The Oscar winning director
stars as Bud Johnson, a regular good-old-boy and single
dad who is a washed up former football player living in
Texico, New Mexico with his precocious daughter Molly
(Carroll). It is election day in America when Molly casts
a vote in her dad’s name. As it would be, the election ends
up hinging in a tie vote and rests solely on the shoulders of
one re-vote belonging to Bud. Bud unwittingly becomes
a media star and his hometown becomes stops-on-acampaign-trail for both sitting President Boone (Grammar)
and his Democratic opponent Greenleaf (Hopper). Both
politicians are equally served by slick and conniving right
hand men, played admirably by Tucci & Lane.
In this current election year, this average Joe-typemovie raises an eyebrow or 2 on national issues and
it touches upon patriotism as well. The subject of the
candidates’ flip-flopping on important concerns is also
dramatized. This is not a message movie. The outcome is
very vague. This is mainly a picture about father/daughter
relationships and in this vein, young Carroll is poised to
please in this, her stepping stone movie Good for Costner
fans C-

I
t has been a decade since Jerry Brees became the Henegar
Center’s executive director. Hired by a hopeful Board of
Directors, Jerry came on board in September of 1998 – the
sixth Director since the building opened in 1990. Nancy
Crofton, Operations Manager, was already in place having been on staff for two years prior. Together, Jerry and
Nancy worked as a team and dedicated themselves to the
mission of creating a community cultural center in one of
Melbourne’s finest historic buildings.
As we sat in the executive offices for this interview,
it was more like sitting in a cozy living room. Pat Giannacco, facilities anager, pops his head through the door to
say hello. Adam Lucker, technical director comes in with
a hug and a smile. The only one missing is Kathy Kett,
events manager. Schedules of the 5 full-time staff members revolve around the multitude of events that have made
the Henegar Center, home to so many organizations. The
rapport between staff members is easy and direct. Everyone takes part in the decision making. Everyone pitches in
where needed. And it is that atmosphere which insures the
continued growth of the Henegar Center.
J
erry Brees will be hard to replace. The Board of Directors has already appointed Nancy as the new Executive
Director. She says it will take three people to do what Jerry
has done. For starters, Jerry and his wife JoAnne Mitchell,
developed a successful theatre program from the ground
up.Now known as Red Carpet Productions, they have just
launched their fourth season of performances. The success
of the program is not unrecognized. Last year Henegar
Center scored number one in the State of Florida for community theatre funding.
In the middle of building sets and assembling casts,
Jerry somehow found the time to handle all of the marketing and public relations associated with the theatre and the
building. He also managed all financial aspects including
lease negotiations with the building tenants, and facility
rentals. Funding is essential for an arts facility so in the
midst of his other duties, Jerry created a corporate sponsorship program and a membership program. In another
world, each of these jobs would be full-time.
Approximately 25,000 people pass through the doors
of the Henegar Center each month. Truly a multi-purpose
facility, the Henegar hosts business meetings, weddings,
dance groups, rehearsals, artist groups and children’s programs. In addition to the theatre program, the Henegar also
produces several annual events including a children’s summer camp and production, a holiday show, variety show,
the Celebration of Dance, a children’s haunted house and
an adult haunted house, classical music and symphony concerts - and the prestigious Brevard Live Music Awards on
September 8th.
The Henegar Center exists because of community support. The largest share of the operating budget comes from
earned revenue. Tickets purchases, room rentals and memberships support the building. The mission of the Henegar
is to operate a community arts center that provides quality
cultural and education programs, opportunity for community use and to continue to preserve and maintain its historic significance.
Jerry Brees has accomplished this. He is sad to leave
but confident in the future of the Henegar Center. He is
thrilled that Nancy will take over as Director: “She is the
logical choice. She has the experience, she knows the program inside and out, she’s well-known in the community
and has the support of the Board of Directors.”
Jerry will assume the position of Director of Entertainment with the U.S. Army at an installation in Vicenza, Italy
in the beginning of October. Until that time, he’ll assist the
Henegar staff in preparing for Henegar’s continued growth
and success.Nancy smiles and says the only thing she plans
to add is a video conferencing system so she can reach Jerry, whenever she needs him.

of “Lady and the Tramp”
A
couple of years ago I stopped by a bar called the
Sports Page on a Tuesday night to check out an open
mic night a buddy was hosting. Exactly twelve minutes
and thirty four seconds (totally made that up - I wasn’t
counting) after I pushed through the flyer covered door I
heard Mr. McLean, the ringmaster for the night, announce
“Lady and the Tramp” as the next act to perform.
I looked to the stage and saw, for the first time ever,
the areas “next big thing”. Four individual entities fusing
together to form a new, unheard of sound; breaking
barriers, throwing caution out the window like a lipstick
stamped cigarette. Ok not really, they were playing punk
covers. But not just any punk covers - punk covers from
the golden age of the genre. No Avril or Good Charlotte
tunes here. I’m talking Face to Face, NOFX, the Violent
Femmes, Dramarama, all the best stuff!
Firefighter and rickshaw stuntman Dave Roman
on bass and vocals, punk image connoisseur Jeremy
Collings on rhythm guitar and vocals, local surf legend
and Mr. Fuel TV Ricky Carrol on drums and vocals and
the cherry on top: flip-flop wearing rocket girl Karalyn
Woulas on lead guitar and, you guessed it, vocals.
Over the last couple of years I’ve watched this band
progress from a “having fun playing for friends” kind
of deal into a really tight, professional group. They’ve
worked hard, added originals, played a ton of shows
and acquired hard-to-get sponsorships along the way.
Out front of this quartet is the “Lady”- Karalyn Woulas.
Woulas sings and plays lead guitar for the Tramps, hits
the surf whenever she can. She also has a day job - rocket
scientist for NASA. I thought it was time for someone
to sit down with the queen bee of this hive and get the
skinny.
Her unassuming demeanor and shy sensibility gives
off the impression that she isn’t actually aware of how
much she has going for herself. Woulas graduated F.I.T.
with a degree in aerospace engineering and was hired on
by NASA almost immediately as an electric engineer. To
be honest, even after half a dozen conversations about
it, I’m still not exactly sure what she does. I know she
designs, or builds, or designs AND builds “black boxes”
for the space shuttle. But that’s the point; most of us
watch shuttle launches with all the attention of a 3 minute
fireworks show - never really knowing what it takes to
get that thing into space. Karalyn, however, works for the
most cutting technological administration in the world
and has a direct hand in the success of getting that thing
into space. Impressed yet? There’s more.
Brevard Scene
Coastal girls like K tend to go one of two ways with
the lifestyle around here. Some beach girls like to tan
on the beach while the boyfriend rides a few waves.
Woulas took the other route. She bought a board,
learned to charge it and spends her beach time in the
line-up.
She got into music in a similar way. She wanted to
play the music, not just listen. She got her hands on a
guitar and started taking lessons for both six-string and
voice. Then, when she had been playing for as little as
a year, she decided it was time to take the stage. She
got together with the guys and there it was - the band.
There are two kinds of people in this world - doers
and watchers. Karalyn fits into the first half. She isn’t
content to just sit on the beach and watch the waves
or to sit in the audience and listen to the band. She
isn’t even ok with just watching the space shuttle leave
earth. She wants, needs to be on the driving side of life,
not just a passenger.
On a side note - when I started writing this article
I couldn’t find the bass player’s last name anywhere.
Their website lists the last names of everybody in
the band except him. So, before I put him down as a
“Madonna” or a “Cher” I tried to contact two of his
band mates for the info. Karalyn didn’t answer, so I
tried Jeremy - the only other contact number I had.
Here’s where it gets fun. The number I was given isn’t
actually Jeremy’s, it’s his mom Sally’s. When I realized
who I was talking to I explained my situation and she
promised to help all she could. I thanked her and hung
up. Not five minutes later my phone buzzed and when I
picked up it was Sally- true to her word and ready with
what I needed. Jeremy, your mom rocks! Cheers to you
Sally and thanks for all your help!

Open Mic For Funny People With
Kyle Stewart
T
here are open-mic events for just about everything from
music to poetry. Now, thanks to Palm Bay funny man,
Kyle Stewart, aspiring comedians have an open-mic to call
their own. What’s more, locals looking for something new
and refreshing to do can have their funny-bone tickled every Wednesday night. This month Stewart will host openmic events at 9:30 pm, September 3rd and 17th at Imago’s
in downtown Melbourne (701 E New Haven ave, upstairs),
and at 9 pm, September 10th and 24th at The Metro (3020
W. New Haven Ave, West Melbourne).
Stewart, 22 years young, said that he wants to help
build Brevard’s local comedy scene, saving aspiring comedians the drive to other Florida big cities.
Stewart’s routine takes on a range of subjects from
jokes about his height—Stewart is 6 foot 6!—feeding Giraffes with his mom on mother’s day, hypothetical hostage
situations, to being a part of the struggles of in the lefthanded minority. Backed by a smooth solid voice, Kyle’s
unforced, conversational style unloads laugh-out-loud gems

he got involved in comedy, what his plans are here in
Brevard, and how an open-mic comedy show compares to
an open-mic music show. It turns out, Kyle and his gang of
fellow local comedians may not be far from having a veritable local comedy scene.
Brevard Live: Many in Brevard might not be familiar
with what happens at an open-mic stand-up. Give us an
idea as to what someone should expect from one of your
typical shows.
Kyle Stewart: Honestly, sometimes I don’t even know what
to expect. But in theory, a microphone is placed on stage,
a host—in this case, me—gets on stage, uses said microphone to tell a few jokes and introduce the open-mic participants.
In most cases, the performer has from about 5 to 10 minutes
to tell jokes to the audience. The performer finishes. The
host comes back on stage. Lather rinse repeat as necessary
until all of whom sign up to perform get their time in.
The open-mic is where pretty much every comic starts and
tends to do most all his performing for the first year or two

before he or she gets thrown a 20 minute spot in an actual
show. So any open-mic could have any number of comics
with any range of experience. The lowest level being the
random drunk who thought he was hilarious five minutes
before he got on stage. The time frame of a show is hard to
determine, but I try to keep it at around 2 hours, tops. The
crowd starts to lose interest or has gotten a little too inebriated at that point.
Who is your favorite comedian? And do you have a
favorite style?
KS: I can’t say I have a favorite style of comedy. I don’t
even have one solid favorite for a comic. I like a lot of them
for the different styles. Some of the favorites that spring to
mind are Christopher Titus, Brian Posehn, George Carlin,
Flight of the Conchords, Mitch Hedberg, and George W.
Bush, just to name a few.
When did you first perform before an audience?
KS: Like ever? Preschool I think. Some play or something.
I’ve always been into being on stage and doing whatever
dumb tricks I could for attention pretty much my entire life.
I didn’t really give the comedy thing a shot until a little
over a year ago. It seems to be working out pretty well so
far. People notice me and the bar gives me a free drink or
two for getting the whole damn thing together. What more
could a guy ask for?
How does open-mic stand-up compare to a traditional
stand-up event?
KS: Well, normally you pay to see traditional stand-up
because the comics get paid. Those comics also do longer
sets and perform in smaller numbers. Its 2 to 3 comics you
pay for doing 30 to 45 minutes a piece versus 4 to 6 (or
more) doing 10 minute freebies. Also, open mic nights tend
to have more people heckling in the crowd. Heckling, if
you’re unaware, is when people in the crowd try to steal a
comic’s thunder by putting him down, making smart-assed
or snide remarks in response to a joke, etc. It’s not a lot of
fun when you’re starting out, but after the 100th heckler or
so you start to kind of feed off of it and play off of it, and
in some ways, makes the show a bit more enjoyable. Hecklers, although I don’t condone them, do force the comics to
improvise a little.

What motivated you to start this series of open-mic
comedy nights?
KS: My main concern is the lack of open-mic opportunities
in the area. I’m trying to help out any aspiring comedian in
the area. The path of all stand-up legends starts with open
mics, usually at comedy clubs. Our local comedy clubs
don’t offer open-mics and the local open-mic nights are
more geared towards family friendly music and poetry. I’m
just saving our aspiring funny people from being forced to
drive out as far as Orlando or Miami to get five minutes of
stage time a week for God knows how long before they’re
doing well enough to feature in a comedy club.
BL: Lots of people go out to a club for live music. Do you
think an outing to hear stand-up is more fitting for certain
kind of occasions/outings?
KS: Honestly, I think stand up serves best for a group of
friends that hang out regularly that just want to go out
somewhere and be entertained. I’ve seen a few open-mic
shows go down in flames because there’s a bachelorette
party of like 30 to 40 women gossiping with each other,
handing out gifts, and are only going to talk over any performer on stage. Not to mention that most open-mic participants are single men in the 20 to 30 age bracket. The word
“bridesmaid” has lured me off that stage once or twice.
Give us an idea as to what you’d like to create here
in Brevard. What would a comedy scene look like? Are
there other aspiring comedians in the area?
KS: I’d like to see at least one or two bars in the area doing an open mic night every other week, maybe spending
a little money on booking some of the more experienced
guys once a month or so to do a show. And of course, more
aspiring comics in the area. I’d love to see it get even bigger then that, but right now I think that’s a realistic goal to
work towards as far as a scene goes. There’s a small group
of comics that are really committed to comedy in the area
right now. People like myself, Ed Colon, Chris Green, Noah
Rivera, Chase Bunker, and Shawn Banks. Shawn lives up
around the Titusville area. He’s pretty much the most successful comic in Brevard right now. He was on a Comedy
Central open mic competition last year, and has been in a
few movies recently. I was actually pretty surprised when
he showed up to one of my shows last month.

owner of Windemere Inn, at 9:30
am “after breakfast”. It’s a few minutes early and, of course, Beth is
still in the kitchen. It smells great.
“Do you like some coffee?” Sure. I
sit down and look around. It’s comfortable. Comfy couch, a fire-place,
bookcases - I’ve seen that before,
somewhere in a movie, probably
starring Doris Day. Everything is so
picture perfect. Bye-bye outside
world, I am taking a break...

hen I meet Beth, dressed in a white blouse, a skirt and a huge apron.
She’s just putting another batch of chocolate chip cookies into the oven.
It’s her big baking day. - I pinch myself. Maybe I’m in a dream?
Who is this fairy-tale home-maker with a great smile and an aura of
strength and confidence? The answer isn’t simple, but one thing is obvious: Elizabeth Fisher definitely has been a successful business woman. For
18 years she’s worked for “Club Corporation of America”, an international
company that owns and operates golf courses, country clubs, private business clubs and golf resorts. She worked as general manager in exclusive
places all over the world, with big salaries - “and expensive shoes”, she
adds, pointing at the sneakers she’s wearing now. She lived in Beijing, China, for 2 and a half years, in the Caribbean and Canada - and after 16 moves
and 4 different countries, she was done. “I wanted roots”, Elizabeth says.
After a 7-year-detour as innkeeper for a prestigious 5 diamond inn in
Georgia, she found those roots right here in Melbourne Beach when she
bought the Windemere Inn from Tom and Vivian Hey. “I love everything
about it, the flowers, the garden, my staff, my guests”, she says and lives
it by paying attention to every detail in this paradise. Everything is perfect
with ironed bed sheets, breakfast made from scratch and fresh-squeezed
juice, the 4 to 7 o’clock tea-time with home-made baked goodies, and if
customers wish she makes dinner reservations in a close-by restaurant.
Beth is available for her grateful customers 24/7 and works about 90
hours per week and feels “happily ever after.”
Only when the fires were burning in Palm Bay this year in May, Beth
wasn’t at her inn. She’s an Emergency Medical Technician (EMC) with the
City of Indialantic and helped firefighters with their work. Why? “I don’t
want to be the average woman”, Beth says and mentions that she is a lifeguard too. “Let’s just say, I have the safest guests in the world”, she laughs.
And I expected to meet a local version of Martha Stewart! Beth laughs
heartily at my thought, “more like a Martha Stewart on steroids”.

ast month was full of sun, sight-seeing and 4th Wall Broken. I had my
brothers, one of their girlfriends and their friend here for two weeks,
and we were determined to have a good time. With the places we went, it
wasn’t hard to do at all.
4th Wall Broken
I
’ve been following 4th Wall Broken for over a year now
and when I heard they were coming out with an EP with
5 originals, I had to sit down and talk with them about it.
Talking with them was as great as watching them play.
They are really gracious and humble, which adds to their
appeal as a band. On stage, they’re a power house of energy, projection
and skill. Lead singer Paul Mahoney has so much energy
on stage it burns calories to watch. If you’re lucky, you
might even get to see him do a table dance jig that he’s
become known for. Lead guitarist and vocalist Manuel
(Nolo) Izquierdo and lead bassist and vocalist David
Walkins aren’t wall flowers either - they’re all over the
stage, putting as much energy into playing the song out
visually as they are audibly. Drummer Tim Pope would
no doubt do his own jig if it weren’t for the fact that it is
difficult to bounce around while banging your heart out on
the drums.
4th Wall Broken has been playing at Captain Hiram’s
for about two years now. They are an Orlando-based band
and also play at Dexter’s (Winter Park and
Lake Mary), Green Parrot and even have
regular gigs at Universal City Walk.
The band hopes to have their first EP
released in late September. The all original
EP will include Annie Can You Hear
Me, Trouble is, Clever Woman, Voided
Tears and, my absolute favorite, Suicidal
Getaway.
At first impression Paul said he
thinks people might think the EP is a little
macabre.
“I don’t want people to think every song
is about death, because it isn’t - it’s about
life,” Paul said.
The idea for the EP came up when
Nolo came along. Paul and Nolo have
different sounds and they play off of
that, which allows them to reach greater
audiences and more rock genres. Paul
says he tends to be a little more emo while
Nolo is a little more alternative rock. Combined, they
literally make music.
The band does plan to come out with a full album, but for
now, they want to give their fans something to listen to.
In fact, they are working on a song called Shades of Grey,
which I can’t wait to hear live.
Although they do have originals, the band does a lot of
cover songs from bands like Coldplay, Radiohead, The
Proclaimers, Buckcherry and The Darkness. Their musical
range is amazing. They do a great job on their covers, and
the band admits that it’s not such an easy task. “There
is a common misconception to being in a cover band everyone thinks it’s easy, but it’s not,” Drummer Tim Pope
said, adding that because everyone knows the song you are
singing, you have to do it justice.
The band definitely has no problem feeding the crowd
what they want in terms of music, entertainment and a

Seeing Florida
On the Water…
Though the stench can sometimes be overpowering, the
Intercoastal Waterway is a haven for all kinds of wildlife and water
sports. We spent one afternoon on the River Queen for a cruise that
went from Captain Hiram’s, through the Indian River and into the
Sebastian River. It was relaxing, leisurely and fun to search for wildlife
and see dolphins and manatees swimming just feet away from the
boat. It is a guided tour and, being a transplant myself, I learned quite
a bit about the rivers, the islands and the Indian River area.
On Land …
With our warm and humid climate, there are all kinds of different
plants and trees that can subsist here. Florida Tech has an amazing
Botanical Garden, which is free and open to the public. We spent a
few hours walking around and looking at the different plant species.
The day was hot, as usual for this time of year, so with the dense air,
the vegetation canopy and the exotic botanicals, it was almost as if we
were in the middle of a rainforest - not in the middle of a university
campus.
Florida Tech’s Botanical Gardens is thirty acres and has several
different species of palms as well as the other exotic and sub-tropical
plants. It truly is beautiful and a great place to wander and clear your

In the Sand…
What kind of host would I be if I didn’t take my guests to Cocoa
Beach Pier? Of course we went! We had a great lunch on the pier;
the guys rented surf boards and learned the ropes the hard way. They
even got a henna tattoo to mark their experience. I came away with a
sunburn!
There is also fishing on the pier. You can rent a pole and try your
luck at the end of the long pier. Who knows, maybe you’ll catch your
dinner. If not, you can drop in one of the three restaurants on the pier
and still have a great meal.
Dining At Skewers
Another place that was a favorite of my guests was Skewers. They
have a selection of great Mediterranean dishes and sides for meat
lovers and vegetarians. We had 3 fabulous meals during the two weeks
my guests were here. Everyone was in love with the sirloin kabobs,
and the hummus we ordered as an appetizer was gone minutes.
After dinner we’d always relax with some hookah. Our favorites
were mango and pomegranate. Of course, I had to have some Greek
coffee while I was there too - that’ll definitely perk you up after a big
meal!
Skewers also has a belly dancer on Saturday night, so diners have
the opportunity to have a full Mediterranean experience. Skewers has
been around for 25 years and is, obviously, quite a popular dining

n Chinese, the term Chi refers the fundamental energy responsible for life, health and vitality. Chi Pan Asian restaurant sustains that belief by featuring global cuisine that
is lively, authentic, and satisfying. Fresh, spicy, hot, and
fragrant – it’s all there.
Chi is located in scenic Baldwin Park, but easy to miss
if you’re in a hurry, tucked behind other eateries on New
Broad Street. The setting is modern, but low-key with a
soothing palette of earth tones and wooden accents. Dark
wooden tables sprawl out, ideal for large parties, while high
back booths offer privacy and intimacy. The mood is gentle,
almost zen-like.
The menu features an array of Chinese, Vietnamese,
Thai, Indian, and Japanese fare. We commenced with the
Chi Spring Rolls, a mix of cabbage, celery, carrot, shitake
mushrooms, wrapped in a crispy shell and served with a
sweet sauce and pungent Chinese mustard. The spring rolls
were well packed, perfectly crispy, and delivered on savoryness.
My guest, after extensive indecision, settled on a fan
favorite, the Crispy Peking Duck. A duck covered with aromatic five-spice powder, roasted until golden brown and
crisp, and served along with spring onions, cucumbers, delicate pancakes, and mandarin hoisin sauce. The skin crisped
into crunchy layer, while the meat remained tender below.
A delicate rose, crafted from vegetable ribbons, adorned the
plate. The result was a mix of visual and epicurean delight. I ordered the Sichuan Pork, a fragrant dish of tender pork
slices in a spicy broth, served with celery, onion, baby corn,
water chestnut, broccoli, zucchini, and red onion. The meat
was succulent, almost buttery, while the veggies maintained
their form and flavor. The dish lived up to Sichuan’s exotic
allure, but could have packed more heat.
We concluded the meal with the Lychee Mousse Tower, a generous helping of the white, almost translucent fruit
layered with whipped cream. The delicate fruit, similar to
grapes in size and texture, was sweet and floral. Enough
to satisfy any sweet tooth, but light enough for a summer
treat.
Aside from helpful staff, flawless service, and sleek design, Chi delivers a potent punch of flavor that lingers well

Shelton’s life has been a
journey through the worlds
of art, music, and writing.
He expresses limitless
enthusiasm for all three.
B
orn in Philadelphia, he was the third of seven children. He attended public school in Philadelphia and
lived there for most of his life.
Shelton’s first exposure to art was in the 4th grade. His
teacher, Mildred Hall, was a professional artist. She asked
him to create the bulletin board that brought him his first
recognition. Later, he was chosen to attend a special interest class in art for talented students held on Saturday
mornings. That was the start for him, and he recalls that
after he became a teacher, he expected to find Saturday
classes everywhere he went and was disappointed when he
didn’t find them. He devoted much of his time to developing after-school art programs wherever he went.
After high school, Shelton went on to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and Temple University’s
Tyler School of Art. He received a BFA with a certificate
in education and an MFA there. He also went to the Philadelphia College of Art to earn an advanced degree.
Shelton has always specialized in painting. He received instruction from Stephen Green in New York and
met several of the leading art figures of the 20th century
through him. He admits that he was influenced by the work
of those he met. And, he is proud to say that his work was
reviewed favorably in New York by the Leo Casstelli Gallery.
Throughout the years, Shelton has always gravitated
to teaching. He worked full time in the public school system teaching in a poverty area of Philadelphia. At first,
he taught to repay the tuition assistance he received that
obligated him to teach for five years. He loved teaching.
Five years easily stretched to twenty-five.
Throughout his career, Shelton has always continued to paint. Consequently, he has created a great body of
beautiful works, including landscapes, portraits, aviation
art, wildlife, and optical extractions.
V
isual art is not his only area of interest and expertise.
Shelton was one of the first blacks to dance on TV.
Back in the early days, blacks were barred from American Bandstand, but WCAU was more progressive. Shelton

was selected to be part of two-black
couples who danced regularly on that
station.
Serendipity should be Shelton’s
middle name as there have been many
times in his life when he was in the
right place at the right time. Through
dancing, he met many musicians who
influenced his love of music. For
example, he met Sammy Davis, Jr.,
James Brown, and The Four Tops.
Through his writing – he wrote a column called “Around Town with Michael Shelton” for the Light Reader
Newspaper – Shelton met Patty LaBelle and Dionne Warwick. He went
on to paint portraits of many of them.
Another celebrity who influenced
his life was Stevie Wonder. Shelton

For his one-man show, Shelton
will intersperse many of his portraits
with landscapes of the Rockies and the
Grand Canyon. His portrait of Maxwell C. King is installed in the gallery,
too. The opening for the show will be
on the first Thursday of September
(September 4, 2008) from 4 pm to 7
pm. It is open to the public. His works
will hang throughout September. The
opening promises to be a special event
because artists from all of the groups
scheduled to exhibit throughout the
year will be in attendance.

s if he were not busy enough,
Shelton recently began a radio
show called “Golden Era of Music.”
During the show, he features the music from several eras. He features big
band sounds and many of the single
sounds. Favorites are Frank Sinatra,
Luther Vandros, Tony Bennett, Ella
Fitzgerald, and Nat King Cole. He
also makes room for community service announcements and loves to announce art events and to interview artists. The show is every morning form
9 am to noon on FM 107.9.
In addition to continuing to paint,
Michael has one book out which is
titled “My Life”. It’s a pictorial essay
of different stages of his life and is
available through www.lulu.com. He
wants to write another and will as soon
as he finds a few extra moments.

One For The Road

Customer Service My Ass!
I guess you can see where I am going with this month’s
article. One of my biggest pet peeves is customer service.
I was brought up that the customer was always right and
you do whatever you can do to make the customer happy.
Even if the customer was a complete douche bag you did
your best to satisfy them. Then when they left and were
out of sight you flipped them off to make you feel better.
Now a day’s most places should just hang a sign up in
their place of business that says “To our dear customers. If
you do not like the way we do business then by all means
feel free to kiss our ass!”
A few month ago a client of mine paid me with a
check from Skank America, I mean Bank America. The
check was for $1000.00. I went to the bank to cash the
check. Once inside I gave the teller my driver’s license
since I did not bank there. I then had to provide her with
my thumb print as well. She was kind of cute so I was
hoping she was going to ask for a sperm sample but she
didn’t. Anyways, the cute teller went in her drawer and
got the cash and counted out nine hundred and ninety- five
dollars. I said with a smile that she was five dollars short.
She said there is a check cashing fee of five dollars. You
got to be kidding me. She just looked at me and said nothing.
Let me get this straight. My client who banks here
gives me a check from your bank to pay me for my service. I then come here to get HIS money not yours and
you charge me five dollars for a service fee. The service
fee is for you to sit down, reach in the drawer and count
out my money. Am I correct? Sir that is our policy for
people that do not have an account with us but if you
would like to open an account here I can waive that fee.
I told her that my policy is to never pay a service
fee for anything and that she owed me five bucks. I guess
my voice got a little loud and the manager came over and
asked if there was a problem. The teller explained that I
was upset with the service fee. What would you like for
me to do sir, the manager asked? Just give me my five
dollars. I can’t she replied and I will have to ask you to
leave before I call security. Well if you are going to call
security please tell him to bring five bucks with him.
After the police left I was feeling a little hungry so I
went to McDonalds. I ordered a chicken wrap, fries and
diet coke. The lady handed me an empty cup and walked
away. Upon her return with my wrap and fries I handed
her back my empty cup and said I wanted a diet coke.
She pointed to the coke dispenser across the way and
said you can get it there. I pointed at the dispenser behind
her counter and said and you can get in there. She said
that their policy was to have the customer get their own
drinks unless of course they were going through the drive
through.
As luck would have it the same police officer showed
up and in a timely manner. Now that’s customer service. My bail bondsman took his sweet ass time but that’s
another issue.

This year Chris will debut his new ventriloquist act with
his dummy Brain Arnold.
