IGLUTE 2016
…at Mt. Stirling
Whether you’re a beginner or regular visitor to the Victorian snowfields
the IGLUTE weekend will provide you with a whole new experience –
learning to live comfortably on (or in) the snow.
The renowned IGLUTE snow-camping weekend enables Venturers and
Scouts to learn snowcraft skills and to try cross-country skiing around Mt.
Stirling’s trails. More experienced skiers can ski to the summit and take in
its glorious views, while beginning cross-country skiers can develop their
skills on the gentler practice slopes and skiing out to the Cattlemen huts.
In 2016, IGLUTE will run the weekend of Friday 5th – Sunday 7th August.
Venturers and their leaders arrive at St. Mary’s Hall, in Hunter Street
Mansfield, by mid-evening on the Friday night. After the groups attending
are welcomed, each individual’s gear is checked for completeness and a
briefing on the weekend’s activities, equipment and snow camping occurs.
Saturday morning we head up to Mt. Stirling, hire our skis, get our packs
on and ski out to our campsite. Once there, we set up camp and do some
practice skiing. Venturers may wish to build an igloo [snow permitting] and then sleep in it, if they’re keen enough. We’ve recently purchased
several sets of snowshoes for you to try out too.
