CDR FRANK G. SCHETTINO. USN
Commanding Officer. U.S.S. NOA (DD·841)
Commander SCHETTINO was born in East Orange, New Jersey on II January 1922. He was appointed to the
U.S. Naval Academy in 1940 and graduated in June 1943 with the Qass of 1944. Upon being commissioned, he was
assigned to USS GANSEVOORT (DD 608) and participoted in World War II combat operations in the Gilbert, Marshall and Philippine Island areas. In 1946, following decommissioning of his ship, he was assigned as Operations
and Gunnery Olficer on the Stalf of Commander Destroyer Squadron FIFTEEN whose operations included a year o f
patrol and occupation duties in' the sea areas off Japan and China. From 1947 to 1949, Lieutenant SCHETTINO served
at White Sands Proving Ground, New Mexico (since rename d White Sands Missile Range) .
He returne d to sea in 1949 as Commanding O!!icer, USS LSMR 403 and deployed to the Far East at the outbreak of the Korean Conflict in 1950. For his close-in rocket and gunfire support while under enemy fire during the
amphibious assault landing at Inchon, Korea in September 1950 he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with
Combat "V". In 1951 and 1952 he Was attached to the stall 01 Commander Amphibious Group ONE as Assis tant
Gunnery, and Training Officer, serving mainly in Korea and Japan durin<j- the latter part of the U. N. campaign
against the Communist Chinese and North Korean lorces.

In 1953 he attended the Army Guided Missile course at Fort 'Bliss, Texas and was then assigned as the Assistant Olficer in Charge and Training Officer of the U. S. Naval Guided Missile Sc:hool, Dam 'Neck, Virginia ",here
he served for one year. lieutenan t Commander SCHETTINO then performed duties from 1954 to 1956 as Officer .i n
Charge, Guided Missile Service Unit 211 at the Naval Mine Depot, Yo rktown, Virginia. Subsequently he attended
the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk lor six months.
In early 1957 he became Executive Officer, USS CHEVALIER (DDR 805) and upon being promoted to the rank
of Commander in March 1958 he was reassigned as Executive ' O!!icer, USS DIXIE (AD 14) w here he served until
late 1959. He was then ordered to duty in the Bure au of Ordnance (later the Bureau of Nava] Weapons) where
he served in the guided missile section of the Fleet Readiness Group until August 1962. In October 1962 he assumed
command of USS NOA (DD 841) in the SIXTH Fleet (Mediterranean) Area.
Other awards Commander SCHETTINO has received include the Navy Occupation and Service Medal (Asiatic-Pacific Area), China Service Medal (Extended), Philippine. Liberation Medal, Korean Presidential Citation and
other area and campaign medals for service in the Pacilic Ocean area.
Co=ander SCHETTINO is married to the former Virginia Ruth Pearson of Pana, Illinois. They have two
daughters, Susan and Maria Lynn, who are attending schools in Jacksonville Beach. The family also resides in
Jacksonville Beach, near the home port of USS NOA: Mayport, Florida.

CDR JOHN D. EXUM, USN
Commanding Officer, U.S.S. NOA (DD-841)
CDR EXUM attended the U.S. Naval Academy as a member of the class of 1946 from 1942-1945 and was commissioned Ensign, U. S. Navy upon graduation in June 1945. After graduation, Ensign EXUM served on board the
newly commissioned cruiser U.S.S.' HUNTINGTON (CL-107) in the. capacity of 3rd Division Officer, E Division Officer, and as Assistant Navigator. In February 1948, he joined the commissioning detall of the U.S.S. WORCESTER
(CL- 144) which was commissioned in May oj that year.
In September 1949, LTJG EXUM was transferred to the Naval Reserve OUicers Training Corps at the AlabCDna
Polytechnic Institute in Auburn, Alabama where he served as Gunnery Insl:tuctor for two years. In June 1951,
LTJG EXUM was transferred to U,S.s, NX PERRY (DDR-883) and served·in the capacity of Gunnery Officer for
two years.
In the summer of 1953, LT EXUM was assigned as Flag Lt. for CINCNELM with headquarters in London, England. After one year, LT EXUM joined the Staff of Commander Destroyer Force, U.S. Atlantic neet as Assistant
Operations Officer. This tour was followed in succession by an eighteen month tour as Executive Officer and Navigator of U.S.S. NORRIS (DDE-8S9) and then as student of the U.S, Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island,
class 01 1958-59.
After graduation LCDR EXUM was ordered to the U,S,S. COURTNEY (DE-I021) and assumed command on 18
July 19S9. His tour of duty was highlighted by a four month cruise designed to provide ASW training and experience to the South American Navies.
On 23 March 1961 LCDR EXUM took command of the U.S,S. NOA (DD-84I), On I July 1961 he was promoted
to the rank of Commander.
LCDR FREDERICK S. ADAIR

Frederick S. ADAIR was born 25 September IS.

ADAIR attended ClC Officer's School in Glenvie'
Illinois and then served as operations officer in U:
SAVAGE (DER-386). I" December 1956 LT ADA
assumed command of USS TILLAMOOK (ATA-Ig
LT ADAIR entered the Nuclear Power Program
July 1957 and reported to the National Reactor Te
ing Station, Idaho Falls. Idaho.There he participat
in the testing and operation of the A IW large s!J
reactor plant prototype. LT ADAIR reported to t
pre-commissioning detail of USS LONG BEAC
(CGN-9) in January 1960, and was involved in f
testing and construction of the ship's nuclear P'
pulsion plant. He remained aboard alter comm
sioning the LONG BEACH in September 1961 (Jj
served first as Reactor Officer and then as Me
Propulsion Assistanl LCDR ADAIR reported aboo
USS NOA (DD-841) in November 1962.
LCDR ADAIR is married to' the former Mary Ja
Malsbary of Romney, Indiana. They have thr
children, Katherine 6, John 3, and Elizabeth, I.

CAPTAIN DANIEL M. KARCHER. USN
Commander Destroyer Division One Four Two
Captain Daniel M. Karcher, USN, was born in
Philadelphia. Pennsylvania, on 4 September 1920.
He graduated from Lower Merion High School in
Ardmore. Pennsylvania in 1938, and from the U .S .
Naval Academy in 1942.
Following graduation from the Naval Academy.
Captain Karcl:wr serve(:i as an instructor in the
amphibious force training the p ersonnel who took
part in the initial amphibious landings in Africa.
From 1943 to 1946 he served in destroyers ERICSSON
(DD-440) and FECHTELER (DD-87 0), participating
in Atlantic convoy operations, amphibious assaults
. in Europe, and in the occupation of lapan. From
1946 to 1949 Captain Karcher received graduate
training in Ordnance Engineering. In 1949 he returned to sea du ty as the Executive Officer of the
destroyer FLOYD B. PARKS (DD-884) in the Pacific,
where he took part in the Korean War.
From 195 1 to 1954 Captain Karcher served in the
Navy Department's Bureau of Ordnance (now known
as the Bureau of Weapons). and from 1954 to 1956
he was the Ordnance Officer in the U. S. Navy
Shipbuilding Uaison Office in Paris, France.
From 1956 to 1958 Captain Karcher commanded
destroyers HENLEY (DD-762) and DUPONT (DD-941 ),
and from 1958 to 1959 he was attached to the Staff of
Commander SECOND Fleet. This tour was followed
by a year at the Industrial College of the Armed
Forces, a nd then "by a two year assi gnmen t to the
Office o f the Chielof Naval Operations in the Strategic Plans Division (OP-50). During this latter duty,
Captain Karcher completed the s tudies necessary to
attain a Masler's Degree in Business Administration
from George Washington University.
Captain Karcher is married to the former lane
Elizabeth Moore of Winsted, Connecticut. The Karchers have three children - Daniel 15,' Elizabeth 12,
and Meredith 4. Although the Karchers call Pennsylvania home, they plan to reside in Mayport.
