Bob Sykes Blues & BBQ Festival p.6

Plenty of Blues coming up in May,
kicking off Friday the 2nd at 7pm with
another fun electric jam on the big
stage at Ranelli’s Deli. Brothers Rick and
Frank provide the PA and backline, just
come on down with your instrument
of choice and meet or renew acquaintances with fellow musicians and Blues
lovers. Don’t play? Just come to listen
and hang with the Blues lovers.
May 18th we have our second of the
Phelan Park Music Series with The Pleasure Dusters. This local group consists
of three of Birmingham’s best guitarists:
John Kulinich, who currently plays with
Rollin’ in the Hay and with Taylor Hicks,
Sam Gundersen, an original member of
the Taylor Hicks band and Matt Willis,
who until recently was with the Sassy
Brown Band. I’ve heard it said the MCBS
doesn’t support local musicians. Our
first Phelan featured local band Spoonful, our second Phelan has local musicians. We are supporting local musicians: I know we can do more, so do let
us have your suggestions. Dreamland is
a major sponsor of this event, so please
patronize them and let them know you
appreciate their support.
The Freedom Creek Festival is scheduled in Aliceville on Saturday May 24th,
11am to 8pm. Bands include Mudcat,
Diedra and the Ruff Pro Band, Little Lee
and the Midnight Blues Band, “Birmingham” George Conner, Blues Women Review featuring B.J.Miller, SharBaby and
Debbie Bond, The Mississippi Blues Boys
Willie Lee Halbert and the Fingerprint
Band. We get all too few local Blues
festivals in this area. Freedom Creek
is a great festival that really supports
local talent. It is also a very cool “local”
festival that continues the down home
feel that the late Willie King established
when he organized the first Freedom
Creek festival in his field back in 1997. I
suggest carpooling down to Aliceville.
Also on May 24th at 8pm we are
sponsoring Europe’s #1 Bluesman, Ian
Siegal at Workplay. Just a few of his
accomplishments are Contemporary
Album of the Year – BLUES MUSIC
AWARDS NOMINEE 2012 & 2013, Album
of the Year – BRITISH BLUES AWARDS
2013, Male Vocalist of the Year – BRITISH BLUES AWARDS 2011, 2012 & 2013,
Song of the Year – BRITISH BLUES
AWARDS 2013, Acoustic Artist of the
Year – BRITISH BLUES AWARDS 2012,
etc., etc. Also on the bill will be 2013 IBC
winner Little G Weevil with full band. So
mark your calendars.
May 31st is the Bob Sykes BBQ &
Blues Festival. The MCBS is one of the
sponsors, so please come and show
your support. See full article in this
newsletter.
Another way we support local musicians is with our Battle of the Blues
Bands. This year it is set for Sunday
July 20th at Iron City. If you are out
and about and hear a great local band
playing some Blues, tell them about our
competition and the opportunity to go
to Memphis. Win or lose there is a lot
to be gained from entering. Entrants
will be better as a band; they will likely
pick up a gig or two and will meet lots
of great area musicians. Usually several
venue managers or owners are in attendance and will have the chance to be
impressed by the bands’ performance.
City Vineyard is having some phenomenal Blues this month, check them
out, Friday, May 9 - Lightnin’ Malcolm,
Friday, May 16 - Joe Breckenridge,
Saturday, May 17 - Too Slim & the Tail
Draggers, Friday, May 30 - Ben Prestage.
The latter two, have to my knowledge
never played Birmingham.
Happy bluesin’

From our memphis correspondent
Your correspondent did a reality
check on his sense of Clarksdale’s Juke
Joint Festival with a semi-professional
Blues fan, one who moved to Memphis
from California after a Blues Cruise so
she could see live music every night.
And she confirmed that the Festival
had simply gotten too large to be taken
in as a whole. This is, of course, a very
good thing for Clarksdale, for whom
Blues is a staple crop that rivals cotton
when prices are down or the harvest
is poor. Every fan, no matter how
overwhelmed, is a badly needed boost
to the economy. And, judging from
the youth of the crowds milling, and
later staggering, on almost each of the
relatively few streets in this iconic Delta
city, they’ll be back for years before it
gets to be too much for them. By then,
one hopes, they will be like your correspondent, a little slower, perhaps, but
making up in discernment that which is
lacked in speed; quickness of judgment
rather than fleetness of feet.
Your correspondent thus felt better
about focusing on his small and unscientific (but he pray not to be seen as
naïve) sample of the festival which was
dictated by a Memphis bound itinerary
and not having left work on Thursday
morning to return Sunday evening as
planned.
First stop in Clarksdale had everything to do with Delta culture, but nothing to do with music: Larry’s Tamales in
an old Quiznos on Sunflower Avenue,
just off old Highway 61! The reader
may recall the account in this space of

the October Tamale Festival in Greenville, the most northern reach of the
ante-bellum Cotton Kingdom. Larry, in
a colossal misjudgment, did not represent himself there to the likes of Calvin
Trillin (The New Yorker), W. Hodding
Cater (a Greenville scion writing for The
Smithsonian), Roy Blount (of Prairie
Home Companion and Oxford Amerian fame), John Berendt (Midnight in
the Garden of Good and Evil), and Fox
News. Instead he sent a representative
who managed to be all but invisible at
this opportunity for worldwide fame.
Your correspondent is fairly sure of this
because he sampled the wares of the
winner and runner up, just happen-

they be improved? Your correspondent
would add a pinch of caraway to better
tie them to their Yucatan roots, but
that’s small change. Succulent in their
rich cooking broth, delivered in neat
packets of three corn husk wrapped
tamales tied with rough cord, they are
nonpareil! (French for:” Ain’t nothin’ like

objects that this line of exploration is
incompetent, irrelevant, and immaterial,
your correspondent suggests they listen
again to Robert Johnson’s Greatest Hits.
Thus fortified, your correspondent
found a parking place right between
Red’s Lounge and Ground Zero. This
is what we mean by discernment. And
then, in exactly six hours, forty five
minutes, managed to find acts that
were each, alone, worth a leisurely trip
from Memphis and together, made for a
thoroughly satisfying Blues experience
for only $15.00.

3:00pm: J.K. Terrell - J.K. is
from Tuscaloosa, Alabama
and has been a sideman
musician for over 40 years
trying to make a lot of folks
sound better. J.K. says “I have
always considered this role
as “putting the spice in the
gumbo.” With the help of
several friends he decided to
step out front and do his own
project. J.K.’s music is deep
fried electric Blues with some
of the best slide guitar you
will hear these days. The New

of styles and roots music that
reflects his southern roots.
J.K. is a favorite at Daniel Day

a private party. Getting full value from
this festival is not a matter of getting
your money’s worth. You can do that
in the first couple hours. It’s a matter of
having the energy to seek out the value
and the memory to take it home with
you. Constrained by a hectic schedule,
your correspondent headed to the hotel
around 12:30.
But, driving down Sunflower toward
the Crossroads, he heard music from another joint that wasn’t swarmed by the
same crowds, barely listed on the program, drove past, had second thoughts,
turned around, parked and sauntered in
to hear Terry “Big T” Williams at Pete’s
Lounge. A veteran of Big Jack Johnson’s
band the Jelly Roll Kings, Big T is a solid
performer, the kind that gets an audience dancing in their chairs, if not on
the floor. His charm was rooted in the
natural ease in shifting with
the mood of each lyric. You
can expect to hear a talented
and dynamic entertainer
who will get the crowd
moving! Ms. King is one
of the premier Blues and
vocalists females of our time.

excellent bass of Heather Crosse, who
plays like a Stax house band veteran,
one of a growing colony of expatriates
in Clarksdale, although not far from her
native Little Rock. Pete’s doesn’t usually
have music, but that night they had a
full and happy house of mostly locals
and just a few tourists. This was just
a great Saturday night, with as much
blues as one could pull from the whole
festival, happening on the outskirts, a
testimony to how alive and rooted is
this tradition.
Finally, it now being 2:00 in the
morning, and the party still rocking,
you correspondent retired. Memphis
beckoned. It’s a big part of Memphis’s
charm that Clarkdale is almost a suburb.
The Juke Joint Festival doesn’t happen
every weekend but there is something
going on there every weekend, just an
hour in a fast car from Memphis.

MAGAZINE 2009
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Ian Siegal has entered the
building. If you know the
name, but not the game, it’s high time
you made his acquaintance. He’s the
multiple British Blues Awards winner
and hot tip of everyone from Mojo to
Classic Rock. He’s the songwriter whose
recent CD releases sound like career
peaks, but are only the start. From one
night to the next, he might be a solo
acoustic performer or a blood-andthunder bandleader.
Siegal is known as a bluesman, but
it’s just one shade in the palette of an
artist who slips between continents,
eras and expectations. They say you
can’t sing the blues until you’ve lived
the life, and when Ian Siegal steps up
to the mic, you can hear the slings and
arrows. Recent years have seen the
songwriter catch fire, with British Blues
Awards raining down and consecutive
nominations in 2012 & 2013 for
Contemporary Album of The Year in
the Blues Music Awards - in effect, the
Grammys of the Blues.
THE EARLY YEARS
It has been said that had Siegal been
around in the sixties he would today be
accorded the same reverence as artists
such as Van Morrison and Joe Cocker.
Instead, he is a child of the seventies
who dropped out of Art College in
the late eighties to go busking in
Germany. From the streets of Berlin
Siegal progressed to clubs around
Nottingham in the UK, then to London
and ultimately to major stages around
Europe.
Siegal’s forte is playing to an
audience. He takes command
of the stage in a way very few
artists alive today can match.
Sweat, passion, humor,
balls-to-the-wind slide guitar
and a soul-infused voice big
enough to fell trees! It has
won him an ever-growing
following of fans and a horde
of female admirers.
His career got under
way in 2003/04 with two
successive European tours as
the opening act for ex-Rolling
Stone Bill Wyman’s Rhythm
Kings (Wyman also invited Ian
to record with the Rhythm
Kings). This was followed by
UK tours as a duo with Big Bill
Morganfield (son of Muddy
Waters). During this time
Siegal was also capturing
the hearts of audiences in
Holland, Belgium, Austria and
Hungary. In 2005 he topped
the Soul/Blues/Jazz charts in
Holland.
His 2005 album Meat &
Potatoes has been universally
praised and gained a
maximum four star (excellent)
rating in the Penguin Book of
Blues Recordings – Ian is one
of only two living British Blues
artists to gain this distinction.
Meat & Potatoes was later
re-released as a limited edition together
with a DVD of his stunning performance
on the main stage at the North Sea Jazz
Festival.
That was followed by Swagger, his
2007 release, which again received
universal praise, “No less of a testament
to the talents of one of the most
innovative, gifted and engaging blues
performers on the planet today.” MOJO
magazine ranked Swagger as their no.2
Blues album of 2007.
Siegal is as equally accomplished solo
as he is fronting his band. In response to

How Much: What? It’s free!
The Pleasure Dusters are one of
Birmingham’s best new Blues bands,
combining the talents of three of the
area’s best guitar specialists. They bring
a diverse catalog offering Chicago and
Texas blues, with a touch of Louisiana
thrown in.
They like to keep it “light & fun”, and
don’t take themselves too seriously,
but, don’t let their laidback style fool
you; there’re serious musical chops
here. They spread their sets from soulful
ballads, to smoky rhythms, to rowdy
fret boogies, plus great original songs
& harp too! Come on out to the highly
popular Phelan Park, across from our

groove! Here’s how they describe their
journey:
The Pleasure Dusters: A True Story
There is an old origin non-specific
legend that says “ideas born on New
Year’s Day have that little something
extra special.” Well, born on the 1st of
January 2014 was a concept so complexly simple that for half a second,
time appeared to stand still.
Not one, or two, but three professional guitar enthusiasts converged
upon the Mellow Mushroom of Birmingham to wax philosophic about the past
and future, when a lightning bolt struck;
“We should start a band and call it the
Pleasure Dusters!”
“I want to play Harmonica!” said Sam,
“I would like to play the bass guitar”
said John, “I could play regular guitar!”
said Matt. “We’ll see,” said John, and the
Pleasure Dusters were born.
The Pleasure Dusters Are:
John Kulinich
Johnny (Fontana) Kulinich has been
involved in the Southeastern music
scene for quite some time. His soulful
lead playing has landed him in some of
the best groups the region has to offer.
Currently as well as being a member of
Rollin’ In The Hay, Frankie Velvet and
The Mighty Veltones, and L.O.L.A. he is
playing shows with American Idol winner Taylor Hicks and performs with many
other regional acts.
“He is the best!” – John’s Mom
Matt Willis
Matt Willis got a guitar when he was
13 years old. Being raised by a single
working mother often left him time
alone in the country to soak up everything he could about the guitar. Professionally playing in the bars of Natchez,
Mississippi by the age of 16, Matt felt the
focus of his playing shift to Blues music
and the Blues masters. In 2007 Matt
moved to Birmingham and started going
to the local MCBS open jams. He hooked
up with Rick Ranelli and started playing
in the Charlie Soul Band. Matt took every
opportunity he could to “sit in” with local
acts that he looked up to. Jamming with
artists like 2 Blu and the Lucky Stiffs led
him to join with Lauren “Sassy” Brown
to start the Sassy Brown Band. While
playing with the Sassy Brown Band one
night in Ona’s Music Room, he met Sam
Gunderson, and the third branch of the
Pleasure Duster triangle was complete.
“I’d rather be playing with these guys
than the best guys in the world!” says
the up and coming Mississippian, “and
please remember I am particular about
my tamales.”
Sam Gunderson
Sam Gunderson, a Virginia transplant,
has been active on the Birmingham
music scene since his arrival in 2003.
An original member of the Taylor Hicks
Band, and the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, Sam has repeatedly performed
comfortably on a national level. Sam is
currently enjoying a variety of different
projects including “Sarah Green and the
Sunday Lovers”- a vintage R&B band,
and is about to release his first solo
album “Dirt”.
“Word on the street is that this guy is
pretty good” – The street
“He’s good, but my son’s better” –

These are your Pleasure Dusters; they
do hope you enjoy them.

Where: Iron City, 513 22nd St. S
Time for all Blues musicians from around the state
to enter our annual Battle of
the Blues Bands contest. The
winners will represent the
Magic City Blues Society at
the 31st International Blues
Challenge in Memphis next
January where artists from
more than 150 Blues societies from around the world
will compete. The winner
of the IBC will get a lot of
sponsorship opportunities
and will be booked for some
of the most prestigious Blues
festivals around the country.
Many artists have used this
competition to make the
national Blues scene. We are
looking for the best Blues
bands in Alabama to compete in the 2014 Battle of the
Blues Bands contest. There
will be two first place winners: one band and one solo/
duo act.
The winners will be booked
for paying gigs at MCBS
events. The first place winner
of the band competition will
have their choice to headline the October Phelan Park
finale or open up for Blues
Ball at Workplay December
13th. The second place winner will play the gig that the
first place winner does not
choose. The third place winner will play for our birthday
party in January 2015. The
solo/duo winner will have the
option to open the October
Phelan Park finale or open up
for the March 2014 Junkyard
Juke show.

Additionally, the MCBS
will give a stipend to the
winners to assist with the
costs of attending the finals
in Memphis. We plan to give
the winning band $1500 and
the winning Solo/Duo $750.
The MCBS does reserve the
right to change this amount.
Here are the rules and
regulation you need to know:
• Members of the band
must all be residents of the
state of Alabama.
• You will be given a
20-minute set and will be
penalized for going over your
allotted time. You will not
be penalized for playing less
than 20 minutes. There will
be a timekeeper present who
will give you a one-minute
and thirty second warning.
• You must check your
equipment with the
stage manager before the
competition begins.
• We supply a high quality
drum kit and bass rig. You
can change out the snare,
kick pedal and cymbals.
• The winning band is
expected to compete at
the IBC and with the same
members who play in our
competition. Any change
in band members needs
to be requested in writing.
Approval is at the sole
discretion of the MCBS
Board.
• An individual cannot play
in more than one act.
Below are the scoring
criteria directly from The
Blues Foundation’s website;
we follow in their footsteps
to make our competition
as close to their model as
possible.
1. Blues Content:
Everyone has his or her own
interpretation of what is and
is not Blues. Thus, any given
five-judge panel will include
members with varying
opinions of Blues, covering
the spectrum of Blues
whenever possible, from the
most traditional to soul/blues
and rock/blues. Bands should
pick material carefully. At
the Memphis semi-finals
and finals, the judges are
Blues professionals, not a
bar crowd, and are likely
to be unimpressed with
song selections that are
uninspired. (Call this--with all
due respect to Sir Mack Rice
and Wilson Pickett--the “no
Mustang Sally rule.”)
2. Vocal talent: The act’s
vocal skills.
3. Instrumental Talent: The
act’s instrumental skills.
4. Originality: Original
work is encouraged.
Cover tunes are allowed
but playing the recorded
rendition lick by lick is
discouraged; will not be
looked upon favorably by the
judges; and will be reflected
in scoring.
5. Stage Presence: Over
the years, the quality
of talent has risen so
dramatically that we no
longer consider this an
“amateur” competition. Most
contestants have performed
on stage enough to know
that they are not simply
playing music, but putting
on a show. This category
rates how “sellable” a band
may be.
To reflect the relative
importance of each category
in the success of a band, a
band’s score in each category
is weighted. Raw scores for
Blues Content are multiplied
by four; Talent and Vocals
by three; and Originality and
Stage Presence by two.
The total in each category
represents the Weighted
Score for that category. The
total possible weighted score
is 140.
Penalty Points: A band is
penalized one point from its
Total Weighted Score (see
below) for each ten seconds
that it runs overtime. There
is no penalty for using less
than the allotted time. At the
producing organization’s
discretion, a policy of penalty
for excessive time loading-in
and out will also be applied.
Bands must have one
member present and on time
for the band meeting prior to
the event. Penalty points will
be assessed if you are late.
SCORING SYSTEM FOR
JUDGES
Here is the scoring
procedure for Battle of Blue
Bands and the 2014 IBC.
1. All categories and
weightings are as previously
stated.
2. Each judge will indicate
his or her Raw Score (a whole
number between 1 and 10)
in each category and turn
that information over to the
scorekeeper.
1-3: Typical of a beginning
blues band.
4-5: Typical of a local
weekend band.
6-7: Typical of an advanced
local band but not yet ready to
headline a major blues club.
8-9: Typical of the quality
of blues artists who headline
major clubs.
10: Typical of those who
play the main stage at major
festivals such as Chicago or
Arkansas Blues and Heritage.
3. The scorekeeper will
multiply the Raw Score
in each category by the
established multiplier to get
each judge’s Weighted Score
in each category for each act.
4. The Weighted Scores
from each category for an
act are added together to
2014 battle of the blues bands application

It was most evident that the musicians were having as much fun as the
crowd, which started out rather quiet
and respectfully reserved, and ended
the evening with a 3 minute sing along
of “Shake What Your Mama Gave You”
while waiting for guys to return for an
encore. All in all, one of the more enjoyable shows I’ve seen in a long time, and
a fine candidate for the Birmingham
Concert of the Year.

Aside from the acoustic guitars
on-stage, Osborne plugged in his Strat
for a couple of songs and occasionally
banged on a bongo and tambourine,
Grey blew the harp, and Dickinson, who
apparently can play ANY stringed instrument, dazzled on the mandolin, one
of his collection of less than 6 stringed
Diddly Bow type guitars, and some type
of large, awkward, homemade looking
stand up electric/acoustic bass, which he
let Broussard “borrow” on a song or two.

Southern Soul Assembly

C
Per the official Workplay Twitter feed,
the Southern Soul Assembly concert on
April 2nd was the first time the venue
had ever had a seated show in that particular part of the club. Given the casual
“in your family room” atmosphere of the
performers on-stage, who were all also
sitting, it was a fitting arrangement
Birmingham was very fortunate
to be graced by these four wonderful
performers, sitting, from left to right:
Luther Dickinson, Marc Broussard, JJ
Grey and Anders Osborne. While all
four are very well known, mostly as
leaders of their owned respectfully
named bands (with the primary
exception of Dickinson, a member of
the North Mississippi All Stars and exBlack Crowe) the focus this night was
on acoustic guitars, storytelling, and
singing.
Broussard led off, and for the next
two hours the guys took turns singing,
usually including an extended introduction and explanation of the roots of the
song they were about to perform. So in
addition to the great music, the behind
the scenes tales – of JJ Grey’s parents
and grandmother, Dickinson’s lack of affection for a lawn mower, or Broussard’s
son Gibby, named after his good friend
Gibb Droll – were at times as entertaining as the music itself.

Workpl ay – our major slice of Heaven !
A bit over eleven years ago, the
Hunter brothers created a national
caliber, premier creative venue in
Birmingham. Fueled by film and music
interests and armed with funds from
their family, they created what was,
and still is, a leading edge complex.
The facilities house studios and offices
capable of producing and editing film
and music, as well as one of the best live
performance venues in the country. The
Theatre is nationally recognized as one
of the top music performance venues
in the United States, with the cleanest
acoustics available. When the family
decided to sell the complex three years
ago, we were fortunate to have Birmingham’s own Tom and Clark Williams
step in to rescue the venue from out
of state corporate interests. The Williams are constantly upgrading various
aspects of the complex in order to keep
the facility “state of the art”.
The facility also offers independent
office space and is currently home to
Birmingham Mountain Radio and sev-
eral independent creative companies.
The Theatre offers standard seating/
tables for approximately 250 people
when the lower floor is left vacant, and
about 320+ when chairs & tables are
added to the lower floor. When at full
capacity, they hold roughly about 450. If
you’ve never experienced a live show in
the Theatre, it’s got astounding acoustics: zero slap echo or standing waves. It
will be the best sound you can get at an
indoor show. For larger functions, the
soundstage can accommodate groups
approaching 900 to 1,000.
Currently the theatre has just received a major sound system upgrade
with newer equipment and the bar
has new large screen TVs. Shows can
now be recorded live, directly from the
Theatre, as well. Tom and Courtney
Williams are such warm, “hands on”
owners and you will always find one
of them there, making sure everything
flows smoothly, for every function. They
really care about making your Workplay
experience the best it can possibly be.
Workplay currently books virtually
every major genre of music, except
Opera or Classical. They have an incredibly broad spectrum of local, regional
and national acts, plus offer televised
major sporting events in the bar and
Theatre. They are supporting music
development with the Workplay Rock
School, which teaches everything from
basic to advanced musicianship. Classes
are available for anyone from 8 years of
age and up. The Rock School “Summer
Camp” is coming up soon. You can start
on Monday, write a song and learn basic
instrument skills and play the song for
family and friends by Friday that week!
The bar is open for happy hour seven
days a week. If you haven’t tried it -- we
have a national caliber music performance venue right here in Birmingham.
Why aren’t you down there right now,
listening to LIVE MUSIC?!! Courtney and
Tom would love to give you a personal
tour of the building and history, all you
have to do is ask!

Junkyard Juke features JK Terrell
When: June 7th, 2:30pm
Where: DanielDay Gallery
How Much: $10 members, $13 nonmembers
The Magic City Blues Society is proud
to present harpist/percussionist J.K.
Terrell, with George Griffin opening,
at this year’s second installment of the
Junkyard Juke Series at the Daniel Day
Gallery on June 7th, starting at 2:30pm.
Tuscaloosa resident Terrell began his
music career in the mid/late 70’s playing
the music of Earth, Wind & Fire and the
Commodores in soul and rhythm and
blues bands, before spending several
years touring the world as a member
of the legendary Johnny Shines Blues
Band.When Mr. Shines’ health took
a turn for the worse in the early 80’s,
Terrell became a founding member of
the Lost in the Mail reggae band.
After that, Terrell spent several
years touring the South with Beanland,
which as most of you know, eventually
supplied two members to the ultrasuccessful and popular Widespread
Panic.
When Beanland wrapped up, Terrell
took a job as a professor of social work
at the University of Alabama, where he
has just recently retired.
While teaching, JK kept his hand
in the music business, performing
session and production work on
numerous recording over the last
15-20 years. After all these years,
Terrell has finally released his first solo
recording, New Wrinkle.
Supported by old friends Jason
Speegle on guitar (ex-Leon Russell
Band), Matt Slocumb on keyboards,
John Kliner on drums, Bruce Hopper
on bass, and Jann Simpson on backing
vocals, the disc consists of 10 cover
songs from Peter Green, Jimmy Hall,
Tom Waites, Muddy Waters and more,
and one original, “Right Outside.”
“Right Outside” is really a lovely song,
with almost spoken word verses that
flow nicely into the sung chorus, a piece
of social commentary of what may be
happening “right outside your door.”
JK told me he also likes to throw
a curveball, evident by the last track,
a cover of JayZ’s “99 Problems,” with
a slight vocal assist from Hugo. The
modern day hip-hop/rap song makes a
great blues – who knew?
Based on his musical history and
evident influences on New Wrinkle,
Terrell is guaranteed to bring a widely
varied set list to the Daniel Day Gallery
– a little R&B, maybe a reggae or two,
some Southern Rock (or rock rock,
as some of us are prone to say!) and
certainly some Mississippi Blues.

from the library
There are several new CDs that have
come in this month to the library, all
part of your perks of being a member of
MCBS. At most of our events, our ever
energetic Mark Giorgi drags out boxes
and boxes of Blues CD’s that have been
donated to our library. These are available to you, dear member, just for being
a part of our organization. You check
them out of the library, give it a listen
or twenty, and return it. We are always
looking for volunteers to write a review
of a CD that they particularly enjoyed.
This both helps the artist and helps us
get more ads through record label, and
you know that you like what you will be
buying.

steamy and reserved.”

Meet a Member:
Rich ard Kirby
This month is introducing (in case you don’t know
him) one of our Board
Members at Large, Richard
Kirby. Though just joining
the Board in January of this
year, Richard has been a
major part of our plans for
joining the 21st century
by setting up our new and
improved web site! We were
impressed by the presentation and execution, but of
course some of us are still
stuck in the Stone Ages and
had questions which Richard answered in a language
we could understand. Hey,
here’s a brilliant idea, why
don’t we ask him to run for
a Board position so we can
ask him all the questions we
want and get him to SHOW
us how to achieve web site
literacy! Thank you for accepting, Richard.
Bob Sykes Festival
Caroline Wright
Richard has been married
to his lovely and talented
wife, Jean, for seven years
this coming June. He states
he is very impressed with all
the talent in our local music
scene, and really enjoys
the electrified side of blues
music. I asked Richard what
upcoming MCBS event he is
eagerly awaiting and without hesitation he replied,
”Delta Moon at the Blues Ball
in December.” Great choice,
Richard! Since he has been
a MCBS member for eight
years, we are glad to have
Richard willing to jump on
Board.

fans requests for an acoustic
album The Dust was released
at the end of 2008. A collection
of new songs and some
old favorites (with noted
pedal steel guitarist B.J.Cole
appearing on a few tracks),
the CD quickly entered HMV’s
roots chart, and again made
No.2 in MOJO magazine’s
Blues album chart – this time
for 2008.
His Oct 09 release
Broadside finally gave Ian the
top spot in MOJO’s annual
Blues album chart.
Siegal’s May ‘11 release
The Skinny is an album
recorded in north Mississippi
with Grammy nominee
Cody Dickinson of the
North Mississippi Allstars
as producer. A band was
assembled from musicians
in the area including Gary
Burnside, Robert Kimbrough
and Rodd Bland, all offspring
of notable bluesmen.
Ian returned to north
Mississippi in May 2012 to
collaborate with another
dream-team of local legends
that he collectively coined
The Mississippi Mudbloods.
Joining Ian and Cody
Dickinson were Cody’s
bother Luther Dickinson, and
Alvin Youngblood Hart. Ian
first met Alvin during The
Skinny sessions, when the
Grammy-winning guitarist
swung by the studio and
ended up tracking some
guitar and backing vocals.
The end result of this
second visit to the Zebra
Ranch Studio is Candy Store
Kid, which released October
2012 and quickly reached
no.1 in the iTunes UK blues
chart and garnered a swathe
of awards in the UK and
nominations in the USA.
Ian has become
established in Europe as one
of the most natural, exciting
and vibrant talents on the
scene today. Each year the
stages get bigger, but what
sticks most in Ian’s mind is
his guest appearance with
then 92-year old Pinetop
Perkins and some of the
other remaining members of
Muddy Waters’ band. This was
at London’s Jazz Café in 2005
to a packed house. Then later
at a festival in Norway, in a
role reversal, these legends of
post-war Blues spontaneously
joined Ian on stage for what
turned into a memorable
hour-long set.
In a twist to his career,
Ian performed for several
years with France’s Orchestre
National de Jazz in a program
which has performed at
major festivals across France
and as far afield as South
America and East Africa.
Opening for Ian Siegal
will be 2013 IBC winner and
MCBS friend Little G Weevil.
