St. James Homemakers

Quite a
Catch
This has been a typical summer – hazy,
hot and humid. So now let’s look ahead for
a bit of cooler, drier, sunnier weather and
also for renewing friendships at the St. James
Homemakers Club.
The St. James Homemakers ended their
last season with a great achievement day,
where members showed off their hard work
and raffled off some really nice homemade
crafts. Many new women attended this event
and the Homemakers hope to see them back
in September, along with all their current
members.
Come join this terrific group of women,
make new and interesting friends, and find
out what being a member of the St. James
Homemakers is all about. Their first meeting
is in early September on Wednesdays at the
St. James Lutheran Church on Woodlawn
Avenue, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. For further information, call Janice at 862-8945 or
Roberta at 584-7745. See you all soon.

Now Your Plasma TV Can Fit Into Your Decor
Vickers Gallery & Framing,
464 North Country Road in St.
James, a leading Long Island
gallery and frame shop since
1970, launches the sale of their
customized flat screen television
frames. These high-end television frames are available in over
1,000 styles and are custom
built to fit into any application
and blend with any decor. Each
project includes on-site measurements and installation.
For years, Vickers has been
marrying artwork with unique,
custom-built frames, enhancing
and beautifying thousands of
homes on Long Island and in St.
James.
“Plasma televisions are fast
becoming a standard in homes
today, but a common complaint
among our patrons
is that their TVs
are not in harmony
with the rest of the
art or furnishings in
their homes. We
have solved that
problem by provid-
ing a vast selection of custom
frames to suit any decor,” said
Lisa Boccone, co-owner of
Vickers. “These special frames
can soften the contemporary,
high-tech look of the screen and
restore harmony in the room.”
Vickers Gallery & Framing,
known for its superior quality
and customer service, has been
supplying art and custom frames
to homeowners, artists and corporations for over 35 years.
Some of their notable clients
include: The NY Mets, Bellevue
Hospital, Renaissance
Technologies, Stony Brook
University, Ducks Unlimited and
Deepwells Historical Society.
For information about framing
your plasma TV or any other art
project, be sure to call Vickers at

Natalie Weinstein Home Decorating Club
Launches the Green University
With a mission to promote
use of resource-efficient (green)
design, building and home
improvement strategies through
education, innovation and commitment, Natalie Weinstein,
principal of the 15,000-member
Natalie Weinstein Home Decorating Club, announces the formation of its Green University.
Launched in 2007, the organization’s vision is to promote leadership of environment-friendly
design, thinking, practice and
trends. A kickoff will be celebrated on September 23, 2007 at
the Huntington Hilton, where
the Natalie Weinstein Home
Decorating Club Green
University will present an educational summit and expo entitled,
“Go Green: Amazing Secrets
for a Greener Home.”
The program will address
green policy, building, improvement and design, and will feature environment-friendly products as well as wellness information. It will also include an
exhibit of green products and a
variety of tips for greener living.
Spearheaded by a cooperative
of environment-friendly architecture, building, construction,
design, and related product and
service providers – each of
whom is committed to offering
environment-friendly insights
and information to consumers
and community members –
Green University was conceived
as the green-education arm of
Natalie Weinstein Home
Decorating Club. Education will
be provided through community
seminars, webinars, radio spots,
and www.nataliesclub.com,
among other websites.
Increasingly, colleges and universities are integrating green
issues into curricula in the technology, math, science and arts
fields with a goal to stimulate
critical thinking, planning and
design of work and living
spaces, buildings and products
in the context of resource-efficiency and conservation.
The Club's Green University
concept was established to help
bridge the gap between academic and consumer groups in support of green thinking. Founding
members strive to keep green
design and conservation issues at
the forefront of their corporate
philosophies and cultivate relationships with academic institutions engaged in research and
development of “low-impact”
design projects.
For more information on joining the Green Design University
group, please contact Natalie
Weinstein at 631-862-6198.
“Green” Coating Means
No More Painting for St. James Building
In keeping
with the spirit
of its recently
launched
“Green”
University,
Natalie
Weinstein
Design
Associates just
undertook a
project to coat a
St. James building with a new,
environmentfriendly product designed to ensure
that the firm will never have to paint
the building again.
Located at 455 Lake Avenue, the
building, which once housed the St.
James movie theater received a coating
of Chic® Liquid Vinyl, applied by
Liquacoat of Connecticut, after the
contractors power-washed the
building.
“The product Liquacoat applied to
my building makes sense not only
because it is environmentally safe, but
because it is sustainable. So, we will

another lifetime, maybe more,” said
in next issue.
Natalie Weinstein, president of Natalie
Weinstein Design Associates, which is located at 176 Second St. St.
James. “Just think about what that means for ease of life and costsavings for homeowners. It’s all part of creating the lifestyle balance
so many Long Islanders are seeking, while also keeping integrity
with our environment,” Weinstein added.

Help Bring Dustin Home
Dustin Manwiller, the 24year-old son of Kathie and Ken
Manwiller, proprietors of Laurie
Studio the Art of Photography,
suffered a traumatic brain injury
during an automobile accident
on Thanksgiving Day, 2006.
Dustin was comatose and in a
vegetative state for six months
following the accident, but with
the help of the doctors and therapists at Helen Hayes Hospital
in West Haverstraw, N.Y., he is
now aware and responsive.
Unfortunately, the solonistic
rules and regulations of our current health care system have
forced the family to move Dustin
to a sub-acute rehabilitation and
nursing care facility in West
Islip. Most of the residents in this
facility are geriatric patients with
a very different level of care than
Dustin requires. Since Dustin is
still non-ambulatory, he is totally
dependent and requires aggressive therapy geared towards
brain injury recovery.
The family is trying to bring
Dustin home, where he will be
in a more socially suitable environment and be able to attend a
rehab program designed for
brain injury recovery patients.
To help bring Dustin home, a
fundraiser has been scheduled
for Sunday, September 23, 2007
at Theatre Three Playhouse in
Port Jefferson. To purchase tickets please e-mail Margaret at
[email protected]. Tickets are
$25 each and seating is limited.
A complimentary buffet with a
cash bar will be available at 1
p.m., as will the sale of raffle
tickets and a Chinese Auction. A
Broadway Cabaret show will follow at 2:30 p.m. and karaoke
See ticket form on page 103.
and open mic will complete the
day’s activities.
Laurie Studio was located in
St. James for 15 years, please
help to bring Ken and Kathie’s
son home. For additional information or to make a donation,

Back to School Traffic Safety Tips
With the start of each new
school year, students are once
again rushing to be on time, parents are getting them on their
way, and drivers are going about
their business, but experts say
that all of them could heed some
advice on safety.
Drivers need to re-acclimate
themselves to having children on
and near the road, particularly at
rush hours. And, both children
and their parents need to think
about good traffic safety habits.
• Parents should not allow children to play in the street while

waiting for the bus.
• Drivers should stay focused on
driving and not be distracted by
kids in the car or with other
activities.
• Slow down in school zones –
driving just 5mph over the
speed limit increases both the
risk of hitting a child and the
severity of any injuries.
• You never know if children
crossing the street are paying
attention, so remain stopped
until the child has crossed not
only your lane of traffic, but the
adjacent lane as well.
• Never pass a vehicle that has
stopped at a crosswalk, as they
may be waiting for someone to
cross.
• Do not pass a school bus when
its red lights are flashing, even
if it is on the other side of the
street.
• Use extra care in areas where
children may enter the road
from between parked vehicles
or other things that block drivers’ view of the road.

Here’s a Hobby That’s Fun, Educational and Budget-friendly
submitted by the
St. James Post Office
and DC Comics Super Heroes™
to American motorcycles.
Millions of people around the
world enjoy stamp collecting.
Why? Because it’s one hobby
that is fun and educational, and
fits any budget.
U.S. postage stamps celebrate
American history, nature, art,
culture and science. The beauty
of our country is reflected in
stamps, from the 40 natural and
man-made Wonders of America
to the Holiday Snowflakes. They
remind us of important historical
events, inventions, trends and
people who have touched our
lives, from superstar entertainer
Judy Garland to author Katherine
Anne Porter and boxing legend
Sugar Ray Robinson. They celebrate American culture and pastimes, from the Art of Disney©
Getting started
Starting your stamp collection
is simple. Many youngsters
begin by saving used stamps
from the letters, packages and
post cards their families receive
at home. You can ask friends
and relatives to save stamps from
their mail, too. Local banks,
stores, insurance agents, travel
agents and other businesses that
get a lot of mail might be willing
to save envelopes for young collectors.
Some people save entire
envelopes. Others focus on the
stamp itself. To remove the
stamp, first tear or cut off the
upper right-hand corner of the
envelope or card. Place it
image-side down in a small pan
OUR TOWN • AUGUST 2007
of warm water. The stamp
should sink to the bottom after a
few minutes, but wait a few minutes more for any remaining glue
to dissolve from the stamp. Then
take the stamp out of the water
using tweezers or stamp tongs so
the oil from your skin doesn’t
damage your stamps.
If your stamp is self-adhesive,
don’t attempt to remove the
gum. Place it face down and
don’t let anything touch its adhesive back. Once it is dry, you
can flatten it gently with a book
or other heavy flat object. For an
older stamp – the “lick-andstick” kind – put it between two
paper towels and put something
on top. Let the old stamp dry
there overnight, so it doesn’t
curl.

cotntnued
Protecting your collection
To safeguard your stamps, you
can attach them to loose-leaf
paper and put them in a threering binder, or arrange them
more formally in a stamp album.
Some albums have plastic or
paper pockets on them to hold
the stamps. Others include pictures of the stamps to help you
look for and match up the ones
you find. Otherwise you can
affix little glassine mounts called
“hinges” to the back of your
stamps to hold them in your
album, or you can buy mounts
that completely cover and protect the stamp. Consider getting
an album that lets you add pages
so it can grow as your collection
grows.
You may want to get some
glassine envelopes, made of
thin, see-through paper, to hold
and protect stamps until you
have time to put them in your
album. A stamp catalog, a reference book with illustrations and
information about your stamps,
will come in handy as you
research your stamps, and a
magnifying glass will help you
study the tiny details and look
for special markings on your
stamps.
Investigating your stamps
Part of the fun of having a
stamp collection is doing the
detective work – investigating
your stamps. What’s special
about the subject? Where was
the stamp issued? Why? It’s easy
to investigate your stamps – just
look in your stamp catalog, go
to your local library, or search
out the subjects on the Internet.

holiday wish lists.

DESIGN IDEAS:
Go Green and Start With Your Kitchen
by Natalie Weinstein,
Allied ASID
Our ever changing environment is everyone’s responsibility
and we are learning that each of
us must act on protecting it. Of
course, you’ve noticed that global warming has occurred, but I’m
sure you didn’t realize that the
hottest 21 years on record all
occurred in the last 25 years! I
know you’ve read that autism and
AD/HD, allergy and Alzheimer’s
disease, and many forms of cancer, have increased (or have been
more widely diagnosed), but
why? Is it the air we’re breathing,
the water we’re drinking, the food
we’re eating?
I, as a designer since the ‘70’s,
have instilled in my clients and in
truth, anyone, who would listen,
the importance of a clutter free,
organized and clean environment
as the cornerstone of a well
designed and decorated space.
That was before I’d learned of
Feng Shui. Now everyone is
understanding its value in the
greater scheme of wellness and a
better, more empowered life.
The hot button has been
pushed this year as never before,
and it’s definitely green! Some
say we’ve been warned for the
past 30 years, at least, and we
haven’t listened. Now we have
no choice. We’ve learned one
thing, for sure. We can’t leave the
responsibility only to our political
leaders. We need to be personally pro-active for ourselves, our
environment and future generations. We need to learn more and
do more – and we can.
In keeping with the Home
Decorating Club concept of “the
learning journey to a beautiful
home,” we’ve taken a giant step.
We created The Green University
of the Natalie Weinstein Home
Decorating Club. This consortium of sources will be available
to provide valuable services as
well as educate you in making
your home healthier, more energy efficient and more eco-friendly. I’m so pleased that these
knowledgeable sources are as
excited about meeting you as I
know you will to learn from
them. To that end, we are readying for a major launch on
Sunday, September 23 at the
Huntington Hilton focusing on all
the things you want and need to
know to make your environment
“greener.”
Since your kitchen is the hub
of your home – the gathering
place for friends and family,
make sure the vegetable bin is
not the only green location there.
By starting here to consider
“going green” as you renovate,
you can create major inroads into
more eco-friendly, healthier living.
Beginning with cabinets, there
is now an alternative to offgassing particleboard called
wheat board, which is a strawbased product. This material can
be veneered with woods like
maple, oak, mahogany, or raw
wood, which can be painted
(with low VOC paints, of course).
Solid woods cabinetry can also
be eco friendly, if harvested from
sustainable or managed forests.
Flooring made of natural stone
products generally help save
energy by keeping an area cool in
the summer and warm in the winter.
Countertops fabricated from
natural stone, like granite are
practical and long lasting, as

well, but quartz composites like
CaesarStone (which is made by a
company recycling almost all of
the water used for production) are
becoming more popular.
A new look for backsplashes
today is glass tile, often in a range
of beautiful colors. Many companies create these from totally
recycled glass.
High-end manufacturers like
Sub-Zero, Bosch and Viking carry
the Energy Star labels, as well as
many popular priced brands.
Energy Star is definitely what to
look for. Sub-Zero refrigerators
use 15% less energy. Bosch dishwashers customize the temperature and water level to accommodate your load. One Viking induction cook top model is so efficient, it heats only the pot, not
the stove, through magnetic
energy.
The cleaning products under
the kitchen sink need to be evaluated as well. Read the labels
and make sure you are not
spreading toxins on surfaces for
your family to ingest. Back to
basics, using vinegar, natural
glycerin soap, lemon juice based
cleaners, borax and baking soda,
your house will be just as clean
and a lot safer for you. In addition, while you are cleaning
those counter tops, unplug your
appliances and help save energy.
That really adds up.
Do you have air or water filtration systems in your home? The
kitchen faucet might be a good
place to start your quest for a
healthier living space. Remember, what we cannot see or taste
can hurt us.
So – it’s a new world out there,
one that we need to know about.
The Home Decorating Club will
help you learn more, do more,
and be proactive for yourselves,
your family and our planet. What
better place to start than in our
own kitchens?

COLLECTOR’S CORNER:
Clothespins
by Carol Gibbons
In the early days of my married
life I can remember asking my
Grandmother how she got
through the day doing repetitive
boring chores such as washing
the dishes in the sink by hand,
and doing the laundry, then
hanging it out to dry on the line.
They are such thankless jobs and
she was obviously an expert since
she had been doing these things
for about 50 years, and I never
heard her complain. I remember
so clearly, one afternoon, following her out to the yard with the
heavy laundry basket filled with
clean wet clothes. She carried the
bag of pins. I would take one of
Grandpa’s shirts out and give it a
firm shake to free the arms from
their wrinkled position and
Grandma would pin it in place.
She smiled and said, “With each
article of clothing that’s hung I
fondly think of one of my children or grandchildren and offer
up a silent prayer of thanksgiving
for them in my life. Sometimes I
run out of laundry before I run out
of family members, so I look forward to the next chore so I can
continue my list.”
I have never looked at my
laundry line the same. I even took
a closer look at the actual pins
that hold up the clothes.
Grandma used the old fashioned
peg pins. These were made of
wood, with a slit up the middle
creating “legs” to hold the clothes
on the line. This is a great and
simple design, and time tested.
Before mass production, people
would make their own by whittling a piece of wood, usually
hickory selected for its strength.
However, over time the legs
would stretch, bend, or warp,
and the clean clothes would fall
off the line and on to the ground.
This age old problem put people
in search of a better method. The
earliest American patent for the

Clothespins
continued from page 60
clothespin was issued in March
1832. It was described as a bent
hickory stick held together with a
wooden screw. This design was
impractical; rain would cause the
screw to swell rendering the pin
inoperable. Twenty one years
later, in 1853, the “spring-clamp
for clotheslines” was invented by
David M. Smith of Springfield
Vermont. This design of two
wooden “legs” hinged together
by a metal spring is the clothespin design that we use mainly
today. Many people tried to
improve Smith’s design, in the
19th century – there were 146
new patents granted, none of
them making a marked improvement. Later designs were plastic
and colorful, but none could
compete with the simplicity and
the price of Smith’s design. By
1900 there were a few factories in
the northeast that made and distributed the clothespins nationwide for over 100 years.
However, due to the efficiency of
clothes dryers, the use of clothespins has been at a steady decline
since the 1960’s. In December
2002 the last remaining American
clothespin company, Penley
Corp., closed its doors. If you
should find yourself in need of a
clothespin today you can still
purchase them, however they
come (like so many of our products) from China.
When Grandma passed away
one of the only things I asked for
was her clothespin bag. For me it
was filled with memories, well
wishes and love. I do not hang
my laundry out every day, items
like jeans and towels get too
“crunchy” on the line for me. My
children would die of
embarrassment if they
ever saw “undies”
flapping in the breeze
so I could never hang
those out. However, I
do hang out my sheets
and tablecloths. There
is nothing like that
fresh laundry clean
scent when something
has been out on the
line all day. And as for
my “thanksgiving” list
of family and friends…
well, there is always
the task of folding and
putting away!

NATURALLY SPEAKING:
Enjoy These Waning Days of Summer
by June A. Liardi
September, it is the back-tobusiness month and there is still
plenty to do. Vegetables and
flowers will continue producing
so keep harvesting and deadheading.
You can still sow seeds for a
late fall harvest. Lettuces,
spinach, peas and radishes will
do well. Plant garlic now too,
you will be pleased when you
are harvesting it next summer.
Collect seeds of the flowers
you enjoyed this year. Make
sure they are completely dry
(usually brown in color) or they
will rot. Store in a dry location,
use an envelope or paper bag
and note the name and color,
date and any other information.
If you have a picture, add that
too. Share or trade with friends.
The middle to the end of
September is a good time to
bring houseplants back inside. It
is good to bring them in before
you have to put the heat on.
Take off or trim away any dead
or damaged leaves and branch-
es. Give the plant and pot a
good spray with the hose to
knock off any pests and dirt. Use
an insecticidal soap to get rid of
bugs and to clean the foliage. If
you have only a few plants,
there are ready mixed sprays, or
for a larger collection, you can
buy a concentrate and mix your
own. Make sure to spray all the
leaves on top and underneath.
Make sure to hit the leaf joints,
new shoots, buds and all the

stems. Bugs like to hide in those
tiny joints. Spray the soil and the
pot, and don‘t miss the drainage
hole. Spray, let dry, and spray
again.
You can keep your pet from
digging in your potted plants by
using one of those inexpensive
plastic saucers. Pick one that
will fit on top of the soil. Cut a
slit from the side to the center,
this will allow you to slip the
inverted saucer around your
plant on top of the soil.
Pot up those herbs and bring
them inside to enjoy all winter.
Chives are good candidates to
bring inside. Cut them back hard
(save the cuttings and dry) give
some fertilizer and water and
place in a sunny spot.
While you are out in the herb
garden, pick some to make your
own herbal vinegar. Try tarragon
in white vinegar or basil with
oregano or garlic and black peppercorns in red wine vinegar.

ceramic. Make sure all equipment is clean and herbs are
washed well. Add about one
cup of chopped herbs to two
cups of vinegar, close tightly and
store in a cool, dark place.
Shake occasionally and taste
after a week, continue to store
until you like the intensity of the
flavor. When it is to your liking,
strain the vinegar through
cheesecloth or a coffee filter
until it is clear. Pour into a sterilized bottle and add a sprig or
two of the fresh herb. Use a
chopstick to push the herb into
the bottle and arrange. It is best
to use the vinegar within three
months. You can add fresh vinegar periodically to cover the
herbs and to extend the vinegar’s
life. This would make a nice
homemade gift, just add a pretty
label or tag and ribbon.
As they finish doing their
thing, this is a good time to thin
out and/or move your perennials. Make sure to put labels on
any new plants or ones that you
have moved. Add some compost
and keep them well watered,
this can be a hot month also.
Have the children help plant
your spring-flowering bulbs.
Show them how that brown and
dry bulb turns into a beautiful
flowering plant. Prepare a bed
with some peat moss, compost
manure and some bulb food.
The children can help you with
a very natural-looking planted
bed. Have the kids take the
bulbs and just toss them onto the
bed. Wherever they land is
where you plant them. The older
children can read about the
planting depth and have them
use a ruler to measure out the
correct planting depth.
Remember, pointy end up. Plant
bulbs that bloom at different
times to get the most out of your
garden. The work now is well
worth the beautiful display next
spring.
Another way to get children
interested and mindful of nature
is by feeding the birds. In winter
there is not much food around
for the birds that stay here. A
simple feeding station is an old
hanging plant. When the plants
in your hanging baskets die off
you can use this as a feeder. Just
remove the plants and put birdseed right on top of the soil. A
store-bought feeder is better as it
has a top to keep the seeds dry.
Make sure to always provide
fresh water too. Give the children the responsibility of replenishing food and water as needed.
As the flowers of summer fade
there are still things to pick for a
nice bouquet. Ornamental and
wild grasses are blooming now.
Pick a variety of different types.
Use them as they are or bundle
in small bunches and hang
upside down to dry. You will
have a great autumn arrangement to display for October and
November.
Enjoy these waning days of
summer. Autumn will be here all
too soon.

Building or Remodeling a Home the Safer, Smarter Way
by Jim Winter
If you’re building a new
home, planning to build one, or
planning work on your existing
home, you’ve probably already
thought about some of the construction features you want to
include. Did you know there
are products available now that
may help you avoid the mess
and expense of damage to your
home in the future?
Here are a few ideas:
• Impact-resistant roofing is a
relatively new product that
offers more protection against
impact damage (and in some
cases against wind damage)
than the ordinary roof. Some
insurance companies even
offer premium discounts for
qualifying impact-resistant
roofs. You’ll want to check
with your agent before you
buy to be sure the roof you’re
considering qualifies for a discount with your insurer.
• Whole-house surge protection
is installed either at the electrical service meter or at the
breaker box. It helps to protect
your home and contents
against power surges that arise
outside your home. While
you’d still need plug-in surge
protectors, whole-house protection may help to reduce
your risk of lightning damage.
Many electricians can show
you where to buy this protection and install it for you, and
some power companies will
install it at the service meter
for a nominal charge on your
monthly bill.
• Whole-house water leak
detection systems may save
you the hassle of water damage to your home and contents. These systems shut off
the water supply to your home
if they detect a leak inside.
New research and products to
make your home safer or more
resistant to damage are always
entering the market. It’s easier to
add safety items when a home is
being built or remodeled, so it’s
a good idea to keep an eye out
for the items that will help to
provide years of safe and comfortable shelter.

MONEY MATTERS:
Long-term Financial Moves in a Short-term World
by Scott Posner, CFP, A.A.M.S
As a society, we have grown
accustomed to instant gratification. You can lose 20 pounds in
two months, learn a language in
six weeks and download your
favorite songs in seconds. The
idea of waiting for what we
want, it seems, has become a
quaint relic of bygone days. Of
course, in many walks of life,
there’s probably nothing wrong
with having your desires fulfilled
quickly – but the “get it now”
attitude can actually have some
negative consequences when it
comes to spending, saving and
investing.
Want proof?
Consider the following:
• In the fourth quarter of 2006,
families spent 14.5% of their
disposable income to service
their debt – the largest share
since 1980, according to the
Center for American Progress.
What can you do to avoid
some of the financial problems
that may arise from short-term
behavior?
Here are a few suggestions:
• The first quarter of 2007
marked the eighth quarter in a
row with a negative personal
savings rate, according to the
U.S. Bureau of Economic
Analysis.
• Almost half of workers who
are saving for retirement say
that their total savings and
investments (excluding the
value of their primary residence and any pension plan)
is less than $25,000, according to the Employee Benefit
Research Institute’s 2007
Retirement Confidence Survey
• Delay purchases. Try to think
about all purchases overnight
and calculate how long you’d
have to work to pay for them.
You might be surprised at how
many items you can actually
do without.
• Limit your borrowing. It’s easier said than done, of course,
but the fewer debts you have,
the more you’ll have available
to save and invest. While it
may not be possible for you to
pay “cash” for everything you

• buy, it’s nonetheless a worthy
goal, and the closer you can
come to achieving it, the better off you’ll be.
• Pay yourself first. If you wait
until you’ve paid all your bills
and other expenses each
month before you save and
invest for the future, you’re
probably going to make very
slow progress toward your
goals. If you can “pay yourself
first” by putting money in a
savings or investment account
every time you get paid –
even if it’s just a nominal
amount at first – you’ll help
yourself greatly over time.
• Be patient – and buy quality.
From 1926 through 2006,
large-company stocks provided
an average annual return of
more than 10%, while smallcompany stocks returned, on
average, more than 12%,
according to Ibbotson Associates, an investment research
firm. Of course, past performance is not an indication of
future results and you can’t
assume that, for a given year,
your stocks or other growthoriented investments will
return 10%, 12% – or anything at all. In the short term,
all growth vehicles fluctuate in
price so you shouldn’t be
shocked at losing principal
over a single year, or perhaps
a couple of years in a row. But
if you buy an array of quality
investments and hold them for
the long term – at least 5-10
years – you can help increase
your chances to achieve some
growth.
In all likelihood, our tendency
to want things quicker is only
going to accelerate. But when it
comes to making smart financial
moves, you’ll want to take a
“slow and steady” approach.

MORTGAGE MATTERS:
Not Your Father’s Mortgage
by Ann Mondrone
I was asked to speak recently
at a local professional networking event about the changes in
the past 20 years in the mortgage industry. I immediately
thought about the obvious – the
use of the internet by consumers
to learn about the mortgage
process and to seek out competitive loans, and the explosion of
mortgage options – ARM’s, interest-only loans, no-down-payment loans, etc. But when I gave
it further thought, I realized that
the changes that have had the
greatest impact are not so obvious.
Growth of the
“Secondary Market”
Up until the 1970’s, loans
made by lenders were largely
held as assets. That meant that
the lender owned the debt.
Payments were collected at a
fixed rate of interest over the
entire life of the loan. This
involved great risk. The need to
pay higher rates to depositors
when rates went up, caused
considerable losses. There was,
in fact, a period in the early
1980’s when this resulted in
numerous bank failures. A “secondary market” in the form of
Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac (both
quasi government agencies), and
Wall Street investment firms
changed all of that. These entities purchased the debt from the
“primary” lender, pooled the
loans, and issued bonds that
were purchased by investors,
thereby taking the risk off of the
lender. The effects on the mortgage industry were that many
more funds were available to
make loans. It also created a
need for uniformity in lending,
as loans needed to conform to
certain standards to make them
more appealing to secondary
market investors.

sumers. Computer programs that
“score” the data on these reports
have probably had the greatest
impact on mortgage lending.
Benchmark credit scores have
been established by the secondary market and also by individual lenders that are used to
determine approval into a mortgage loan program. It is safe to
say that today’s mortgage applicants will live or die by their
credit scores.
The Use of Automated
Underwriting
Cartoons and commercials of
the past often depicted a banker
sitting at a big desk with a rubber stamp that said
“DECLINED”. Although it
appeared to be joke, it actually
represented the way lending
decisions were made. Someone
manually reviewed an application and made a decision to
approve or decline a loan. The
computer age brought a change
to all of that. Secondary Market
agencies and individual lenders
designed computer programs to
read mortgage applications
including the applicant’s credit
report, producing “findings” that
would cause the lender to
accept or decline an application.
Most lenders today will not
approve a loan that the computer does not accept. The lender
doesn’t, for example, look for an
explanation of past credit problems or periods of employment.
The process no longer has a subjective “human” approach.
through Mortgage Brokers. The
growth of this industry is not surprising since navigating through
the mortgage maze today can be
daunting. Formerly perceived as
adding cost to a transaction,
they now often help borrowers
obtain more favorable terms than
they would be able to on their
own.
In short, the mortgage industry
is a world apart from the one
that existed a generation ago. In
many ways it offers more opportunity, but it also presents many
challenges.

The Divorce Dilemma: Making One Decision at a Time
by Lawrence Glazer, CLU
Divorce can be a difficult and
stressful time for all parties
involved. At the same time –
although it may not seem it –
divorce can sometimes turn out
to be a time of new beginnings,
a chance to explore new opportunities and perhaps move ahead
with one’s life. There will be
many decisions to make, and
having emotional support is key
when going through a life
change. Frequently, a person
going through the divorce
process will seek guidance from
family, friends and counselors.
Gaining control of one’s finances
is also an important step – since
a divorce usually brings with it a
change in each individual’s economic status.
Taking the Necessary Steps
It’s essential that any individual going through a divorce
takes the necessary steps to evaluate and secure their financial
assets. Since most financial decisions require professional knowhow, you may want to consult a
qualified attorney, accountant,
insurance agent, and financial
planner for guidance. You’d
want to ask questions about division of assets, working out your
new budget, evaluating your
insurance needs, re-evaluating
your retirement plan, and working out child support arrange-
ments. Here are some tips to
keep in mind in getting started
with this process.
Obtain Essential
Financial Documents
Collect all documents related
to financial matters. These could
include:
• Birth certificate
• Social Security card
• Divorce or separation agreements
• Prenuptial agreements

Maximizing Your
Insurance Options
It’s a good idea to reconsider
all of your insurance needs following your divorce. If you had
joint ownership of a life insurance policy, you may decide to
split the coverage into individual
policies. In addition, you will
probably need to change beneficiaries on your policy.
If you have a child, it’s a
good idea to evaluate your present insurance coverage to make
sure you have adequate life
insurance protection. This is
because financial payouts that
depend on future earnings –
such as child support – can be
provided for through a life insurance policy at the death of the
insured. For example, if a life
insurance policy is taken out on
the life of the ex-spouse paying
child support, it can help ensure
a source of funds in the event of
your ex-spouse’s death. If you
determine that you want to make
a change, talk to an insurance
agent.

Catherine, who began skating
at the age of 9, has been competing for 10 years. A 2006 graduate
of Smithtown H.S., Catherine
participated in 9th grade softball,
10th grade basketball and 8th12th grade inline hockey. “When
I was 8, my brother and cousin
would play street hockey outside
my house and they would always
play one on one and would ducttape couch cushions to my legs
because they never had a goalie.
One day, I made my brother play
goalie and I never looked back,”
says Catherine.
Tryouts for the team were held
at the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs from April 2729. About 30 players tried out
and the coaching staff chose eight
skaters (four forwards and four
defenders) as well as two goalies.

HEALTH VIEWS:
By Gregory R. Thomaier, D.C., C.C.S.P.
This article is part of an ongoing series presented in order to bring you the
very best and latest information about exercise, health and diet.
Runners, Don’t Skip The Warm-Up
It’s universally recommended:
Warm up before you work out.
But there are many impatient
runners out there who skip this
important step to save time. If
you just take off running with no
warm-up, you may be missing
out on several advantages.
• Warming up increases blood
flow, providing oxygen to working muscles and improving
overall oxygen dynamics,
which favorably affects
VO2max.
• Active warm-ups reduce the
build up of lactic acid during
high-intensity exercise
• Elevating the body temperature
with a warm-up increases the
movement of oxygen from
hemoglobin and myoglobin. It
reduces muscle viscosity, making muscles more fluid and
supple. It also increases the
sensitivity of nerve receptors
and speeds nerve responses.
• Warm-ups reduce injuries.
• Warming up reduces oxygen
consumption during exercise
and lowers post exercise heart
rates compared to no warm-up.
• A moderate intensity warm-up
improves your range of motion
and anaerobic performance.
• Warm-ups are associated with
decreased use of glycogen,
longer time to fatigue and
improved aerobic energy
metabolism.
If you routinely avoid a warmup, you may be selling your training short. In general, warm-ups
improve subsequent performance, enabling you to make more
effective use of your workouts.
With the added benefit of
injury prevention, a warm-up is
time well spent. Jog at an easy
pace for a few minutes and then
gently stretch prior to a regular
training run. Start running slowly
for several minutes before building to moderate intensity (60%
VO2max). For races, increase
your warm-up to include a gradual build to a higher intensity.

Out of Balance?
by Dr. Linda M. Bocchichio
If your car tires were out of balance your car may not steer properly or as easily. You would use
more gas and wear out your tires
quicker. Our bodies react similarly. If there is weakness of a certain structure in one area of the
body another area takes on extra
duties and in turn perpetuates the
weakness. This can cause injuries
due to misuse. For example, a
change in gait, balance, or coordination due to an ankle, knee or
hip, may cause lower back pain
and biomechanical dysfunction.
Spinal vertebrae may subluxate
coming out of normal alignment,
thus causing nerve irritation
and/or dysfunction in an associate area of the body.
Balancing the spine with chiropractic adjustments and proper
supportive exercises, especially
function exercises, helps to pre-
vent further injury. Functional
exercises strengthen your body’s
core muscles. They focus on
improving your ability to perform
daily living activities – walking,
lifting, carrying – doing real life
activities in real life situations.
Function fitness starts with
controlling and balancing your
own body weight. It teaches isolated muscles how to work
together. When performed properly, functional exercises can
maximize strength and minimize
overuse of muscles that compensate for their weaker counterparts.
This allows for overall improvement of health and the ability to
more easily and efficiently perform activities of daily living.
Editor’s Note: Dr. Linda Bocchichio is a
chiropractor practicing at 105 Lake
Avenue So. in Nesconset. She is the
founder of the St. James Walking Club
and is a former president of the St. James
Chamber of Commerce. For further information, call 979-9854.

Maui 2007
by Paul Gretschel
I just returned from my annual
family trip to Maui. Before I relay
my beauty and fashion observations, I would like to say a few
words about this beautiful
Hawaiian paradise. We are
always being asked why we keep
returning to Hawaii. Everyone
comments on the long trip (an
additional five hours from Los
Angeles).
My standard answer is: the
long trip is worth it! Maui is just
beautiful and serene with perfect
weather. You have the spectacular Pacific Ocean and the
Hawaiian mountains from every
location on the island. I frequently stand on the beach and look
out at the ocean in disbelief. I still
don’t understand how they make
the water so blue. It looks artificial. East coast travelers tend to
go to Florida and the Caribbean
for their tropical vacations while
west coasters frequent the
Hawaiian Islands. In my humble
opinion, Hawaii is one notch
above the Caribbean and I have
been to at least five islands in the
Caribbean.
Our first family trip to Hawaii
was in 2000 and my two daughters have always traveled with my
wife and me. The girls do not
dread the flights and love Hawaii
as much as I do. If you ever have
the opportunity to make a trip to
any of the Hawaiian Islands, do
not pass it up. It is truly a paradise and it’s still in the United
States. That translates to no customs/immigration to deal with,
no foreign currency, no foreign
language and citizen rights.
As you might imagine, the hair
and fashion is layback. Maui is a
wedding and honeymoon destination, but you will not see
women with formal hairstyles or
updo’s. The makeup is minimal
and the clothing is comfortable
and fairly informal.
Most of the young men have
long, sun-bleached hair in a
“surfer’s” style. Some of the older
guys and businessmen will wear
more traditional short and medium length haircuts. Lots and lots
of Aloha shirts. As corny as the
style appears to many people
from the mainland, it’s a popular
look with men of all ages, both
residents and tourists.
The ladies of Maui oftentimes
wear their hair in a long straight
style reminiscent of my hippie
days in the sixties. There will also
be shorter, disconnected styles for
the more adventurous Hawaiians.
