Can you
find the key...?
What would you do if you found a key? What would you do if you
found the door that belonged to the key? And what would you do
inside the Secret Garden?
Mary Lennox is lost and lonely. Sent away from her home in
India, she finds herself in the wilds of Yorkshire in a vast mansion
owned by a distant uncle. Soon the house begins to give up
its mysterious stories, but can she find the key to the secret
garden and discover what’s inside? A story of unlocking hearts
and minds, the redemptive power of nature and why some rules
should be broken...
This well-loved children’s classic is brought to life by critically
acclaimed, award-winning international theatre company
Proteus. Fusing circus, puppetry, film and music, this is a
magical journey beyond the door into the garden of imagination.
“Simply captivating.”
“Best of British theatre.”

Onyx Brass has dominated the international brass chamber music scene for the last eighteen years with its
serious yet approachable programmes. They strongly believe in commissioned new music, performing and
recording world premieres by Bob Chilcott, John Tavener, John McCabe and Judith Bingham. Onyx Brass’s
programme takes us on an eclectic tour of the countries and composers who have contributed to our rich
history of brass ensemble music over the centuries. It is rooted in the Renaissance but with a touch of the
great fugue as well as more modern European composers, including three new pieces.

Programme includes DEBUSSY Syrinx, STRAVINSKY Suite Italienne: Introduction and Minuet & Finale,

The Paris Salon was a centre of social and artistic life and none was finer than the one run by Winnaretta
Singer, a grand patron of the arts. This formidable woman, who was a talented musician and artist, did not
merely host performances for entertainment and kudos. Her energies transformed the salon into a creative
crucible that formed pioneering music by Fauré, Debussy and others. We are delighted to welcome actress
Maggie Steed who will, in the guise of Winnaretta, introduce this world inhabited by Proust, Diaghilev,
Isadora Duncan, Jean Cocteau, Virginia Woolf, Colette and many others.

Slim Chance - the band Ronnie Lane formed when he
left the Faces - is treading the boards again. Original
members Steve Simpson, Charlie Hart, Steve Bingham,
Alun Davies and Colin Davey are playing Ronnie’s
songs in the spirit of the band’s previous incarnations.
Charlie and Steve realized that they were not alone in
their lasting regard for Ronnie Lane and his songs.
Now for the rebirth of the band! They aim to celebrate
Ronnie’s later music, taking the show to festivals and
theatres at home and abroad. These great musicians
have been joined by Geraint Watkins on organ and
piano. The whole band sings!

Dowland: Anniversary Collection
Elizabeth Kenny, widely regarded as one of the finest lutenists on the world stage, has a long-standing love
of English 17th century song. Here she is joined by some of today’s most outstanding interpreters of this
music to form Theatre Of The Ayre, an innovative ensemble which reinvents 17th century pieces in the spirit
of improvisation and, most importantly, entertainment. In the year of the 450th anniversary of John Dowland’s
birth, the group performs some of the composer’s most personal and direct songs, each of them a masterpiece
of style and beauty, in a musical snapshot of late-Elizabethan England.

The Stables would like to give a
special thanks to the following for
their valuable support:
Danny says: A few years back, I launched a campaign
(wrote some letters) which successfully saw the return of
Roast Beef Monster Munch to our supermarket shelves.
You’re welcome. This is a loosely-based stand up/
breakdown show which revolves around a handful of other
letters I have penned out of frustration, with mixed results.
It’s a show about those little annoyances. Too frivolous to
be a cause. Too inconsequential to be a campaign. But
just about right for that couple from Berwick-Upon-Tweed
who come to the Edinburgh Fringe every year. May contain
strong language and adult material. Suitable for age 16+.

Electro-acoustic early music ensemble Joglaresa bring
anarchy and sensuality back into medieval music because life can be just as low in Latin! In these times
of sleaze, MPs’ expenses, the fall of bankers from grace
and controversial wars in the Middle East, Joglaresa (long
deemed to be early music’s ‘bit of rough’) present medieval
songs of illicit affairs and seductions, biting criticisms
of bankers, politicians, bishops and conflict in the Middle
East, all delivered with Joglaresa’s inimitable energy,
danger and, above all, FUN!

Led by Temesgen Zeleke, a former star pupil of
Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke, Krar Collective
perform a rootsy yet contemporary take on traditional
music from Ethiopia based on other-worldly modes
and driven by hypnotic rhythms. The 6-stringed krar
lyre is associated with the azmari minstrel tradition;
in the hands of Zeleke it becomes a gritty, ancient rock
guitar. Accompanied just by drums and fronted by the
stunning, soaring voice of Genet Assefa, Krar Collective
create a surprisingly big sound, leading one critic to
name them ‘The Ethiopian White Stripes’. With a varied
repertoire from gentle ballads to high-energy dance
tunes, Krar Collective are set to surprise and delight.

Sad, funny, intense, bizarre, fascinating… Welcome
to Melingo’s wry Bohemian universe - a fabulous,
boozy, theatrical milieu where Tolstoy, Kafka, Piaf,
Brecht, Waits and Cohen might find solace. Melingo
walks the streets sniffing out poetry like a bloodhound,
dances like a whip and sings like a scar. He studied
at a Conservatoire but retains little of that institution,
having spent the early 80s celebrating the sex, drugs
and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle and playing reggae, funk and
rock. In the 90s he discovered the musical roots of
his home country - tango. His deep grouchy voice and
vividly sparse music well up from the world of tango in
its early days, conjuring up undiscovered romanticism
with the grating, Dada-like echo of a world stumbling
on its last legs. A true tango original!

An original Glyndebourne commission, the cast features members
of the Glyndebourne Chorus, singing in English. The performance lasts
approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes with no interval.
This is a story of love and loss, of betrayal and deception, of sex and a city, of
wounded pride and attempted retribution – of plumply inviting sofa cushions.
When Godofredo discovers his wife in an extremely compromising position on
his favourite yellow sofa with his business partner Machado, he doesn’t know
how to react – but he knows he must do something…
A new opera written specially for Glyndebourne by its first Composer-in-Residence
Julian Philips, with a text by Edward Kemp, it is based on a short story by Eça
de Queirós. Writing about Lisbon’s bourgeois society towards the end of the
19th century, Queirós is a shrewd observer of the human condition and writes
with an intriguing mix of gentle satire and wry humour. All of this is reflected
in the music, which also draws on the rich tradition of Portuguese folk song.

Probably the most entertaining group to come out of the
60s and 70s. Their musicianship, their harmonies and
their humour make them a supremely talented showbiz
phenomenon and the best tonic the NHS could give the
population. Alongside favourites like Call Up The Groups
they play their inimitable version of the William Tell
Overture, their parody of Killer Queen and their hilarious
take on of Windmills Of Your Mind (about what happens to
your body as you get older). Don’t miss this one. You’ll walk
out the theatre with happy memories.

Welcome to Jenny Eclair’s new stand-up show. After thirty
years in the business she should vaguely know what she’s
doing. Professional Grumpy Old Woman, writer and panto
star, Eclair has been round the block that many times she’s
lost count. Touring as a stand-up gives Eclair enormous
pleasure. It also gives her dreadful varicose veins, but most
importantly it gives her partner (St Geof) a bit of a break.
Help him keep her out of the house, by supporting this
show! Suitable for 16+. The show contains adult material

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel’s single Make Me Smile
(Come Up And See Me) reached number 1 in 1975 and
is regularly voted among the top singles in the history of
the charts. The Performing Right Society confirmed Make
Me Smile as one of the most played records in British
broadcasting. The song has been covered more than 100

Judy Teen, Mr Soft and Here Comes The Sun. He joins us

Magic, the first and still the best tribute to Queen, perform
all of Queen’s greatest hits plus some you may not have
heard for a while, in their latest show. Magic perform
completely live. With five vocals to back up Roger Brown’s
powerful lead vocals, Magic recreate all the complex
harmonies that are Queen’s trademark recording sound.
This, along with two guitars, bass, drums and the brilliant
piano and keyboard skills of Dave Chapman produce a
sound that is second to none. Not attempting to emulate
Queen visually, Magic creates all the excitement of
a Queen live show.

Moulettes are an alt.folk-rock band and have just released
their second album, The Bear’s Revenge. Moulettes’
charismatic, idiosyncratic brand of modern folk music
–incorporating elements of prog and alt.rock, pop and
classical – bewitched the crowds at Glastonbury, Bestival,
Larmer Tree and Latitude where they played the BBC’s Late
Junction stage. The album has been garnering airplay
from legends of British broadcasting including Bob Harris,
Lauren Laverne and Cerys Matthews, and has received very
good reviews indeed.

Two of the British folk scene’s most accomplished performers,
Kathryn and Sean join us with a new album, Hidden People,
bringing their mix of traditional, self-penned songs and covers
back to the stage. They’ve graced stages the world over in
a number of guises, however, the intimacy and strength of
passion shown as a duo, combined with an eclectic repertoire
ensures a rare treat. With a story that includes music making
with Seth Lakeman, Cara Dillon, Levellers, Kate Rusby and
Show of Hands, Kathryn and Sea have established
themselves as pillars of modern British folk.

To think of Derrin Nauendorf
as just a troubadour or
another journeyman would
not paint the correct picture
– he’s an acclaimed artist
with many fans and an
accomplished guitar
player as well as a
singer-songwriter. Derrin
is endorsed by Yamaha
Guitars, but to think of
Derrin as just a guitar player
does not explain his music
either – he’s a songwriter of the highest order. The past couple
of years have seen Derrin busier than ever and he increased
in his fan base and touring range. An opportunity to see
Derrin perform live should definitely not be missed!

Screaming Blue Murder
Jane Taylor, the award winning singer songwriter championed
by Johnnie Walker, returns to The Stables to perform a winter
musical with a difference - Mr Claus, a proverbial story about
a down –and-out Santa who’s lost his way in the high-tech
‘order on line’ modern world. The musical (which is also set
to become a children’s book and an animation) is part of the
Jane Taylor Band’s UK tour, kicking off with a live session
on BBC Radio 2’s Bob Harris show in November. Expect a
magical, mischievous, creatively enchanting experience
and tons of incredible music.
