Ross Orlando's Tahoe Spotlight
World famous DJ/Remixer and
music producer Paul Oakenfold will
turn MontBleu’s showroom into a
dance party on May 28. From London,
England, Oakenfold is a major force
in the music industry, contributing his
amazing talents to the movies, TV, and
the nightclub music sound. Films like
“Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Shrek II”
and the James Bond theme are just a
few of his many contributions. Remixes
for Madonna, U2, Justin Timberlake,
Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Ice
Cube, and The Rolling Stones are
mixed with the Oakenfold sound and
it’s so cool. His 2007 Greatest Hits &
Remixes is heard worldwide. I met Paul
a few years back at MontBleu when he
first came to Tahoe. Backstage after
the show, he poured champagne for us
and was happy to be in Tahoe. During
his show you’ll see wild things on a big
screen, while the music plays – soooo
cool!
BLU Nightclub will reopen on
Memorial Day weekend to show off
their new remodel. They plan on having
more live music along with cool DJ
music and sexy Go-Go dancers.
Harrah's has Sammy Hagar
and the Wabos May 7th and 8th. No
surprise, it’s sold out. Sammy gives
Tahoe a great Cinco party every year.
Funnyman Louie Anderson, May
15th, will make you laugh. I met Louie
around 1996 when he played Horizon’s
showroom. He’s a very nice and witty
man. George Lopez was his opener
and was pretty quiet backstage. Louie
told stories and was very entertaining
on stage and backstage. He came from
a big family and his show is pretty clean
humor.
Elvin Bishop is next at Harrah's,
performing May 22nd. From Tulsa, OK,
with his frizzy hair and overalls, this
talented singer-guitarist mixes a BluesRock sound that’s so likeable by all.
You’ll hear “Fooled Around and Fell in
Love,” “Rock My Soul,” “Sure Feels
Good” and songs with funny lyrics in
them. His band is very tight. For years
he’s been a Tahoe favorite.
May
28th-30th
brings
ABBACADABRA, the Ultimate ABBA
concert to Harrah's.
Vex Nightclub goes off big every
Friday and Saturday night with cool
DJs, music and sexy Go-Go dancers.
The Improv at Harvey’s has new
comics and host Howie Nave each
week. Jeremy Hotz, May 12th-16th,
Wendy Liebman and Chipper Lowell
May 19th-23rd, and Charles Fleischer
May 26th-30th, will be very, very funny.
Check ‘em out.
Harveys Outdoor Concert Series
opens May 30th with Country superstar
Tim McGraw and Lady Antebellum.
With over 40 million records sold, 30 #1
hit singles, and around 25 major awards
won, Tim is THE man in the Country biz.
His new release is “Southern Voice.”
I met McGraw around ten years ago
backstage at Caesars after his very
entertaining show. I told him I wished
I could bottle what he has to make the
ladies go wild and crazy at his show. He
thought that was funny.
The Fresh Ketch at the Keys
Marina has great live music along with
good food and drinks.
Whiskey Dick’s on Tuesdays has
DJ Bird mixing old and new music, $2
drinks, and no cover.
Mo’s Place on Mondays has Open
Mic Night – what a party it creates with
their drink specials and talented local
musicians.
Brother’s Bar and Grill had the
Red Bull Buttercup After Party that was
lots of fun. They have good food, drink
specials, and a great backyard where
you can hang out.
Bistro Danielle (next to Sam’s
Place) has a cool lounge bar with happy
hour specials, and the dining room has
delicious food to enjoy.
Lakeside Inn & Casino is
celebrating 25 years – Wow! – time
flies when you’re having fun. They’re
the locals favorite for drink specials and
great food; and the sports book with all
those TVs is very popular as well.
Blue Water Bistro (in the Timber
Cove Marina) is perfect for drinks, apps,
lunch or dinner with a lake view. You’re
on the water, and it’s beautiful.
Cabo Wabo at Harveys with live
entertainment is always a good time
for all.
Zephyr Cove Resort will have
Mark Twain’s Wild West Weekend
June 12th-13th. Among the festivities,
there will be a pie eating content, a
liars contest, and over $2,000 in prize
giveaways. Come join in the party and
fun. Go to ZephyrCove.com for more
info on this free event that’s great for
Tahoe.
Pablo Cruise played their 70s and
80s hits at Harrah's to a very happy
crowd. I met drummer Steve Price in
’77 at Kirkwood. My brother, Steve, got
us got us on stage for their fun outdoor
show. They sold out faster than Elvis in
the late 70s at Sahara Tahoe. They’ve
always been fun to hang out with for
backstage parties over the years.
And remember, “Find Your Place in
the Sun.” Have fun – you’re in Tahoe!

COMEDY FROM THE MOUNTAIN
Can’t believe spring decided to
finally show up! As much of a huge fan
of the white stuff I was even starting to
wonder if the economy had furloughed
one season and decided to just take
us into summer instead. The mood
has lifted considerably thanks to the
warmer temps but now I’m wondering if
we’re going to get extreme temps from
the other side as summer gets closer?
One thing is for certain it’ll be nice to
finally have more room to park on the
driveway instead of the one sided,
snow blowing lane I had all winter (and
spring) long.
One guy who doesn’t handle cold
weather very well is Jeremy Hotz.
Come to think of it Jeremy can’t handle
any weather very well. Trust me he’ll
find a reason to complain about it
somehow.
One of Canada’s best
exports Jeremy Hotz is always finding
ways to make himself more miserable.
I wish I was kidding but I’m not. I think
it helps him with the creative process.
Whether he’s writing for a sitcom, a
special or just something for his website
Jeremy is thinking of something funny
(or miserable) at this very moment.
Hotz has appeared on just about
every major network television late
night show out there. Jeremy is also a
motion picture actor having appeared
in “My Favorite Martian,” “Speed II”
and one of my favorites, “Newsroom:
The Movie” which is based on the
very popular underground Canadian
TV show that also starred Jeremy.
He starred in the four-part mini-series
“Married Life” on Comedy Central and
was nominated for a Gemini Award
for the CBC’s Cana-DUH. He was the
recipient of a Gemini award for “Best
Performance in a Comedy Show or
Series” for his work in the celebrated
series “Newsroom” on the CBC and
PBS in America. In addition to his
stand-up career, Jeremy was a staff
writer on the aforementioned “Daily
show with Jon Stewart” in New York
and received a Gemini nomination
for his comedy special, “Whatever
Happened to Jeremy Hotz?”
Jeremy has a new DVD out and
recently completed work on
his latest TV show, “My
Life And A Movie.” Having
known him now for over
twelve years Jeremy just
seems to get better over
time and even if he was
making millions right now
would still be convinced
that he isn’t very funny.
That’s why comics can
never be cured through
therapy because with some
once they are cured then
they stop becoming funny.
But Jeremy is always funny
whether he believes it or
not. First off he has one of
the more unique deliveries
I have ever seen. It’s not
just the smart material and
insights but the presentation
of his act that makes him
so unique. He is a little
tough on himself but I think it might be
a Canadian thing because he is also
tough on Canada too. When talking
about Canada Hotz says, “It’s not a
very tough country, huh? They got an
army; they just didn't give them guns
or anything. Look at the Canadian flag.
It's not a symbol of power, it's a leaf but
don't screw with Canada. They'll dry up
and blow away.” Appearing with Hotz
is Lowell Sanders May 12th through
the 16th.
I have asked Wendy Liebman to
be my Best Maiden of Honor when I tie
the knot later this year only because
she is like a sister to me. Wendy insists
though that I am more a girlfriend to
her so it all works out really. Wendy
is one of those people you warm up
to almost immediately and genuinely
loves coming up to Tahoe whenever
she can. She’s currently helping out
her husband, Jeff Sherman, promote
his documentary which centers
around his famous father, Robert B.
Sherman. Along with his uncle, Richard
M. Sherman the two have written for
more than 50 films which include such
classics as “Mary Poppins” and “The
Jungle Book” in addition to being the
party responsible for that famous
Disney Park refrain, “It’s a Small World”
which as we all know has been forever
engrained into our brains.
Originally from Long Island (where
she went to college in Boston at a
school she refers to as I.O.U.) Wendy
studied psychology and histrionics.
Wendy got her start in stand-up by
enrolling in a class called “How To Be a
Stand-up Comedian” at the Cambridge
Center For Adult Ed. She started
doing open mike nights at Boston
comedy clubs and for the next six
years performed throughout all of New
England. “I kept my secretarial day
job, though I would call in sick a lot. I
would say I had ‘female problems.’ My
boss didn’t know I meant her.” Wendy
says that the entertainment bug goes
way back in her family. “My mother is
a ventriloquist-but not professionally.
For ten years I thought the dog was
telling me to kill my father.” Waiting
a beat, she adds, “I got my brother
to do it.” She has starred in her own
HBO Comedy Half Hour special (one
of the highest rated comedy half hours
in HBO’s history by the way) and was
voted Best Female Stand-up Comic at
the American Comedy Awards by her
peers and received the award from
Roseanne and Lily Tomlin. Where does
she keep the award? In her shower
so she can see it every morning when
she’s at home. Wendy has appeared
on just about every television program
it seems. She is always posting
interesting comments on her Facebook
account that includes lines from her
book and hysterical quotes. Some f my
favorite Wendyisms include, “I found
out why cats drink out of the toilet. My
mother told me it's because the water is
cold in there. And I'm like, how did my
mother know that?” The other one is,
“People always come up to me and say
that my smoking is bothering them.…..
Well, it's killing me!” Appearing with
Liebman is the very versatile Chipper
Lowell May 19th through the 23rd.
Howie Nave is the host/emcee/
manager of The Improv @ Harveys
every Tuesday through Sunday. Howie
also hosts his own morning show
(“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on 93.9
KRLT radio Monday through Friday
from 6 to 10am and now you can
see him Monday through Friday at
midnight on his very own television
show, “Howie’s Late Night Rush” on
RSN. Make sure you check him out on
Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/
howie.nave.

Fly Fishing
April was a cold and wet month
and hopefully May will be a bit more
like Summer! We are all used to these
drought years when the weather goes
from Winter directly into Summer and
Spring is quickly left behind. Actually
low water years are better for fishing
in our area but tend to make it a little
tougher in the Fall. Now we have,
what seems to be, plenty of water or
snow pack created by a longer than
usual Spring which will create a much
better than normal Fall of fishing! You
get it one way or another, this year
we have to wait to take advantage
of the windfall that the extra water
will create late in the year. In other
words, fishing is still good now and
it will be good all Summer and into
the Fall!
During this runoff time of year
the Tailwater fisheries are where the
game is played and the Baetis is the
ball! The Little Truckee river is tops
in the month of May with The East
Walker Coming in at a close second.
There are other hatches going on
but the Baetis is prominent with the
occasional Midge, Stone or March
Brown filling in. The exception on
the Walker River is the Caddis which
starts moving this time of the season
as well. If the flows come up the thing
to do is pull out the Streamer box and
have some fun with big flies and my
favorite color is white on the Walker
and Olive on the Little Truckee. Stick
your rod tip on the bottom and pull
your streamers up current with an
erratic strip and hang on for the big
fish! This is not a bad time of year
to hook into that fish of a lifetime on
either of these rivers and more than
likely you will be able to do that with a
streamer if hunting the big fish is what
you like to do.
Another great spot to get a
big fish is Indian Creek reservoir,
Indian Creek has some Huge Fish
in it and on occasion they will eat a
small fly presented with just the right
presentation. Blood Midges are my
favorite in the month of May but don't
discount the Damsel Nymph or the
Calibaetis as well. Look for fish rising
in the evenings or on calm days eating
the Blood Midge on the surface. A
Damsel Nymph with a Blood Midge
Dropper will work just under the
surface with an intermediate sinking
fly line as well!
If you have kids and would like
to teach them how to fish, try fishing
at Sawmill Pond here in the South
Shore of Lake Tahoe. Sawmill Pond
is a kids only fishery that is stocked
with some pretty good sized trout
and is for kids 14 years and younger.
Adults can help their children but can
not fish themselves. An example of an
adult fishing is when the adult casts
the line three times or more or when
the kids are off catching pollywogs
and the adult continues to fish! The
kids fishing experience is meant to
teach the kids to fish not to fish for the
kids. The pond is great for teaching
a youngster to fly fish as well. Try
putting a Pheasant Tail Nymph or a
Lightning Bug under an indicator and
have the kids roll cast off of the West
end of the pond. A slow strip will help
Victor Babbit
keep the line taught and will make it a
lot easier for the kids to hook the fish!
Keep the rod tip down!
These truly are just a few of the
fisheries that are available this time
of year and for further information on
these fisheries or any others in our
area, stop by the shop or give us a
call and we will make sure you get the
information you need for a great day
on the water as well as the equipment
you need for success! Our guides
are available 7 days a week and can
teach you all of their techniques or
just get you into fish. 530-541-8208
and we are located at 2705 Lake
Tahoe Blvd next to Midas Mufflers
mid-town South Lake Tahoe.

the fight against cancer.
Taste of Tahoe features one
local restaurant each week for the
weeks leading up to South Lake
Tahoe Relay for Life on August 7.
The focus is to raise money for the
fight against cancer while having
great food, drinks, entertainment and
fun with friends, family, co‐workers
and neighbors at our favorite local
restaurants. Everyone is invited to
come eat at the featured restaurant
each week to support the fight against
cancer. Each of the Restaurant
Sponsors is making a donation to
the American Cancer Society for the
week it’s featured.
Nearly 30 local businesses are
also sponsoring Taste of Tahoe
to strengthen the community’s
contribution to Relay for Life and the
American Cancer Society. Additional
details and a schedule of restaurants
can be found online at www.
RelayForLifeTasteOfTahoe.com.
Taste of Tahoe is a concept developed
by a few local business owners
to increase South Lake Tahoe's
involvement and contributions to
the local Relay for Life event while
also helping revitalize the sense of
community in the area.
"We hope that everyone will grab
his or her friends, family, coworkers
and neighbors to get out of the
house and enjoy a great time while
supporting an even greater cause,"
says Matt Wiggins, Corporate
Nevada owner. "If you're going to
eat anyway, why not also support the
health and vitality of our community
alongside others who care too?!"
Taste of Tahoe is meant to
be a win‐win for everyone who
participates. "Almost everyone knows
someone who has been impacted by
cancer so it's a cause that's close
to many of us," says Erik Watada,
State Farm Agency owner. "But we
also think South Lake Tahoe benefits
from activities like the Taste of Tahoe
weeks and the Relay for Life event
that bring us together again as a true
'community.' Especially considering
the recent economic challenges the
last couple years, we really want to
be sure to support and recognize the
restaurants, businesses and media
that have stepped up to be leaders in
strengthening our community."
The concept is simple: grab a
friend, family member, co‐worker
or neighbor each week to eat, drink
and have fun at the sponsoring
restaurants during the week they're
spotlighted. And,
support
the
businesses and media sponsors too.
"It's an easy way to support a lot
of great benefits, says Matt Grime,
Fox and Hound owner. “Speaking
on behalf of the other sponsors, I
know we all appreciate the support
of our locals and are very happy to
reciprocate the support back to our
community.”

Lakeside Inn & Casino Celebrates 25 Years
Lakeside
Inn
and
Casino
celebrates 25 years in business.
From day one on May 25th, 1985
the Lakeside team knew they were
about offering great value to our
community, providing a friendly place
for guests, and a good environment
for staff. Ownership, philosophies and
commitment have remained strong
over the years. Lakeside is locally
owned and managed. The ability to
offer something different from their
competitors is a source of pride for the
entire staff.
The size of a property isn’t what
makes it successful, although size
matters. The size of relationships that
have grown through business and
personal interactions at Lakeside is
huge. The philosophy of living life to
the fullest is enormous. Winner of the
Friendliest Casino Employees award in
the Best of Tahoe voting is testimony
to how big friendliness is at Lakeside:
proof indeed that good things come in
small packages.
“The changes we made have
always been looking forward with a
goal of improving the quality of our
service, products, and our property,”
said CEO and owner Mike Bradford.
Noteworthy changes include the
opening of The Tavern Bar, Race and
Sports Book and Taberna Restaurant
in 2000, the introduction of the Player’s
Card in 2003, and the remodel of the
main kitchen and opening of Latin Soul
in 2008. “We are in the early planning
stages of developing a resort with new
lodging, pools, underground parking
and retail space. This is an exciting
time to be a long established member
of the South Shore community,”
commented Bradford.
A month-long celebration is
planned at Lakeside honoring twentyfive years in business. Visit www.
lakesideinn.com/25 for up to the minute
details on this month-long celebration
including the daily afternoon happy
hour from 4 – 7, the “25th Hour” from
11 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., a special threecourse wine pairing dinner on Saturday
and Sunday nights in May and much
more. “We’re thankful for 25 years of
support and look forward to the future,”
concluded Bradford.
Lakeside Inn and Casino is located
at 168 Highway 50 at the base of
Kingsbury Grade.
"ONE VOICE" - Horizon Casino Resort - Begining May 9th
JRW
Group
Entertainment,
Producers, announce the upcoming,
on-going, summer engagement of
Las Vegas headliner and two-time
international award recipient for
“Best FEMALE Voice Impressionist”
BETHANY OWEN and her onewoman stage show, “ONE VOICE”,
to the Horizon Casino Resort, Lake
Tahoe, NV beginning May 9th.
After recently completing a
successful nine week engagement at
the Edgewater Casino in Laughlin,
NV, Owen is excited to bring her onewoman show to beautiful Lake Tahoe
for the first time. Lake Tahoe is the
ultimate destination for relaxation, fun
and non-stop entertainment as in the
Golden Cabaret Showroom located in
the heart of the Horizon Casino which
will be the host venue for Impressionist
Bethany Owen and her one-woman
show.
Owen and her one-woman show
“ONE VOICE” have been touring
nationally for 7 years and celebrates
the zany and fun side of celebrity
personalities through the use of
comedic parody and musical vocal
tributes to some of the world’s most
legendary female superstars of our
time.
In countless shows and concerts
performed across the country, she
continues to amaze audiences of all
ages in doing any of her speaking and
singing voice impressions LIVE as
she BECOMES the characters, while
supported by musical transitions,
theatrical scene lighting and special
atmospheric effects designed by
award winning LA commercial film and
theatrical stage Producer/Director Jim
Whirlow.
Bethany Owen is a rare and
unique blend of talent to the world
of voice impressionists, as most
performers working in this field today
are men like Rich Little, Gordy Brown
or Frank Caliendo, to name a few. So,
the sheer fact that she is a FEMALE
and a working professional in the
industry today is a commentary to her
extraordinary talent alone.
Then add in the fact that she also
has a fully produced production stage
show built around her amazing vocal
abilities and you have a recipe for
the making of some very ORGINAL
non-stop entertainment for all ages to
enjoy.
With hundreds of voices in
Owen’s roster to choose from, her
incredible talent to mimic the human
voice in singing and speaking style
makes her one of the leading female
animation voice-over artists, aswell-as live stage performance voice
impressionists working in LA and the
industry today.
Bethany Owen not only performs
each celebrity voice in true form, but
also takes on their character look,
body language and facial expressions
through the use of quick costume
and wig performance be that of Cher,
Madonna, Tina Turner, Marilyn Monroe,
Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Judy
Garland, Joan Rivers, Minnie Pearl,
Dolly Parton, Patsy Cline, Tammy
Wynette, Reba McEntire, Shania
Twain, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee,
Anita O’Day or Lena Horne. Then toss
is some Sarah Palin, Sharon Osborne,
Macy Gray, Britney Spears, Alanis
Morissette and even Gwen Stefani or
Martha Stewart, and Owen delivers a
jam packed evening of laughs, music
and original entertainment that always
leaves the audiences on their feet
wanting more.
Born in Wichita, Kansas, Owen
moved to Seattle, Washington with
her family and began her formative
years in the entertainment industry in
the Pacific Northwest, but now calls
Huntington Beach, CA home. Owen’s
career has taken her to every platform
of the industry including such areas
as live stage, television and film work
from L.A., Las Vegas, Miami and New
York to international destinations like
Caribbean resorts, India, Germany, the
Philippines and Aruba. She recently
completed a 13,000 mile national
show tour of casino showrooms
and historic FOX theaters and is a
consecutive two-time international
winner in Las Vegas, Nevada for “Best
Female Voice Impressionist”.
Owen on-stage is as incredible
as she is hi-larious, sometimes with
a bit-ing edge,and her im-pressions
are pegged on comedy, but the talent
which is displayed is serious business. And the crowd can sense it when
she sings Patsy Cline, Judy Garland
or Loretta Lynn. In her classic anklelength Loretta-style country dress,
Owen sings “Coal Miner’s Daughter”
with an almost-eerie resemblance to
the country music queen.
‘The Buzz’ - Harrah's - Harveys
Cinco de Mayo stretches through
the weekend this year as Sammy
Hagar & The Wabos have every
intention of celebrating right on through
Ocho de Mayo. To celebrate the sixth
anniversary of his famed Cabo Wabo
Cantina, Sammy and company return to
the South Shore Room on May 7 and 8.
These shows are currently sold out, but
the casino scene at both Harrah’s and
Harveys is rockin’ that weekend and the
incredible Arthur Hervey will be partying
hard at Harrah’s Center Stage ‘til the
wee hours of the morning.
Louie Anderson is one of the
funniest comedians on tour today.
His good-natured game show emcee
persona belies his incredible wit and
side-splitting takes on human nature.
Unlike many comedians touring today,
Anderson works a brilliant vein of humor
the whole family can enjoy, May 15.
Lake
Tahoe
favorite
Elvin
Bishop returns to Harrah’s on May
22. Elvin’s been playing his unique
blend of Oklahoma, West Coast and
Chicago blues ever since first joining
the Butterfield Blues Band back in the
‘60s. One of the premier touring blues
masters, Elvin’s approaching “living
legend” status, so don’t miss this show.
“Abbacadabra – the Ultimate
Abba Concert” is one of Tahoe’s most
popular shows. Everyone who loves
the timeless music of ABBA should see
this show. It returns for a three-day run
over Memorial Day Weekend, May 28
thru 30.
VEX Nightclub, inside the SSR,
will present the “50th Anniversary of
the Playboy Club and the Playboy
Bunny” party on Thursday night, June
10. Only 50 clubs around the globe
have been selected to have Playboy
parties that night, the exact date of
the opening of the first Playboy Club
fifty years ago in Chicago. Playboy
Playmates and a Playmate of the Year
will be in attendance, and a Playmate
contest are just part of the fun in store
for the big celebration.
Here’s something unique for the
South Shore Room: Celebrity chef
Guy Fieri, who is also star of the hit
reality show “Minute to Win It,” brings
his flamboyant “Rock ‘n’ Roll Cooking
Show” to the South Shore Room on
June 11.
With mega-hits including, “Burnin’
for You” and “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,”
there will definitely be “more cowbell!”
in the South Shore Room when classic
rock greats Blue Öyster Cult hit the
stage on Saturday night June 12.
Elton John, with a band including
original members Davey Johnstone
and Nigel Olsson, will
make his first appearance
at Lake Tahoe on July 25
at the 2010 Lake Tahoe
Summer Concert Series at
Harveys Outdoor Arena.
The popular concert series
kicks off the season a little
earlier this time around
with the first big concert
scheduled for Sunday, May
30, right in the middle of
Memorial Day Weekend.
Country star Tim McGraw
brings
his
“Southern
Voice Tour” to Tahoe with
sensational opening acts
including Lady Antebellum
and Love & Theft.
Other Summer Concert Series
shows confirmed thus far are: Chicago/
The Doobie Brothers (June 19);
Sugarland (July 10); and Rascal Flatts
(July 16 and 17). More exciting shows
will be announced soon.
Across the street at Harveys
Cabaret, The Improv presents two
new comedians every week. In May,

and John DiResta (May 5 – 9); Jeremy
Hotz and Lowell Sanders (May 12 – 16);

with featured act Jen Kober (May 26 –
30). The June lineup starts off with Bob
Marley and Larry Omaha (June 2 – 6),
followed by the Stagebenders (June 9 –
13). Howie Nave is the longtime host
and emcee of The Improv. The Improv
at Harveys is on stage Wednesdays
thru Sundays at 9 p.m., with two shows
on Saturdays at 8 and 10 p.m.
