2010 - Grand Rapids Public Museum
2010 Annual Report Embracing Change July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010 From the CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Two years ago, the Grand Rapids Public Museum embraced a new vision. We created new strategic goals that reflect our community’s changing needs and our commitment to sustainability, while respectfully considering our history. We re-imagined our future. From the PRESIDENT & CEO Leonardo da Vinci was a man of insatiable curiosity and boundless imagination. For him, anything was possible. In this same spirit, our challenge at the Grand Rapids Public Museum is to inspire each and every visitor to see past what is and imagine what could be. During FY 2010, we began to see our vision take shape. Through our talented staff, supportive board and generous donors, we can create and offer learning experiences that no other area institution can. We became more accessible, more collaborative and more innovative. More than 280,000 people visited the Museum to enjoy exhibits and special events. In fiscal year 2010, we welcomed Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion and Big, BIG BUGS! - two temporary exhibits that drew record attendance and introduced new visitors to the wonders of immersive learning. The Museum built new relationships, working with partners to develop unique projects like Michigan - Land of Riches. We pushed boundaries with Michigan - Land of Riches, a collaborative exhibit held at the Museum’s former 54 Jefferson location. Local art students and university faculty reinterpreted treasures from the Museum’s collection as contemporary, multi-media art installations. The result? A free-flowing movement of people, thought, conversation and ideas that brought new life to a unique and beloved site. Record attendance and new partners are just two of fiscal year 2010’s many milestones. In the following pages, you will read about many other fascinating exhibits and lively programs, which captivated visitors of all ages, learning styles and walks of life, during this past year. Our board, staff and volunteers have risen to the challenge of creating a lasting impact in our community. Because of their passion and dedication, you can now experience the Grand Rapids Public Museum in ways we once only imagined. We are proud to share the Public Museum’s 2009-2010 successes with you, and we thank you for your continued interest and support, which made them possible! Last year marked our 155-year anniversary—an amazing milestone for us, and the half-century mark for an important local supporter. We held the public premiere of the Amway: 50 Years of Helping People Live Better Lives exhibit. While we look forward to many decades of prosperity ahead, we acknowledge that the Museum could not have made it all these years without our talented staff and a dedicated community. It is your support that enables us to inspire visitors to explore the world around them, to indulge their curiosity and, like Leonardo da Vinci, to imagine all that can be. Thank you for your commitment to our ever evolving, changing and growing Museum! Sincerely, Sincerely, Danny Gaydou, Chairman Grand Rapids Public Museum Friends Foundation Dale A. Robertson, President & CEO Grand Rapids Public Museum 2 3 Celebrating Our Successes Community Anchor, Regional Treasure Though not without its challenges, fiscal year 2010 was a year of unprecedented collaboration and growth. The Museum worked with regional Native American groups to transition the funerary remains and objects from 22 Lower Peninsula heritage sites from our collection to a consortium of recognized Michigan tribes.
