Time Warner has questioned Verizon's contract
with greater Baldwinsville
municipalities.
The cable service provider
sent a letter to the New York
State Public Service Commission May 12, one day before
the commission was scheduled to meet, claiming Verizon
was given a more favorable
contract with the village of
Baldwinsville and towns of
Lysander and Van Buren.
According to Van Buren
Councilor Mary Frances Sabin, issues addressed in Time
Warner's letter included the
existence of a local payment
office and whether franse fees can be considered

Sabin said Verizon submitted a response to the
NYSPSC regarding Time
Warner's letter and the commission is reviewing all the
documents.
While the NYSPSC was
scheduled to review Verizon's contract at their May
meeting, the Time Warner
letter caused the commission
to hold its ruling and further
review Verizon's contract.
Sabin said the NYSPSC will
probably rule on the contract
next month.
"I anticipate everything
will be completed at the June
meeting," Sabin said. "We're
hoping they approve it."

Sales tax impact

Van Buren's portion of sales tax revenue will be

In the past, the town has been eligible to take approximately $2.5 million dollars and has opted to take
$300,000 to cover drainage improvements. With Onondaga County's new sales tax distribution formula,
the town_ will be eligible for approximately $825,000
in 2011, less than $100,000 in 2012 and nothing in
subsequent years.
"We now have to find a new way to fund the
drainage improvements," said Van Buren Supervisor
Claude Sykes.
While the bulk of the drainage projects have been
completed, the town will now have to get creative
with funding to ensure the drainage infrastructure
remains up-to-date.
Cold War Vet exemption approved
Both the towns of Lysander and Van Buren have approved an exemption for veterans of the Cold War.
Lysander recently approved an amendment to the
exemption, which is based on 15 percent of a home's
assessment and would be an approximate $117 savings for a home assessed at $100,000. After holding a
public hearing, Van Buren approved the exemption
at the May 18th board meeting.
"Anything we `can do for any vet we should do
because we do not do enough for them now," said Bill
Palmer of Lysander.

between Sept. 2, 1945 and Dec. 26, 1991.
Lysander officials voted unanimously in favor
of the exemption amendment. Van Buren officials
voted with five in favor and two against (Sabin and
Johnson).

This year the parade committee
will honor World War II veterans.
"This 'Greatest Generation' of
veterans is comprised of our grandparents and great-grandparents,
aunts and uncles and great aunts and
uncles," said Sarah Baker, a member
of the Baldwinsville Memorial Day
Parade Committee. "They are leaving us all too quickly."

the rich history that is part of our
community and to share a rever-
ence for those Americans who made
it possible for us to gather on the
banks of the beautiful Seneca River
in a spirit of peace, camaraderie
and celebration," Baker said, noting
that not all parade spectators attend
the ceremonies. "I think people are
missing so much by not going [to the
ceremonies]. For our children, this is
important. [Our veterans] need to
be remembered."

Support your Dollars
for Scholars chapter
Local Dollars for Scholars chapters have been
making college financing a possibility for hundreds of thousands of students across Onondaga
and Madison counties since 1958.
The program, a division of Scholarship America, has been recognized as an effective way for
communities to provide academic support and
financial aid to local students.
The following school districts maintain active
Dollars for Scholars chapter: Baldwinsville, Chittenango, Canastota, Liverpool, North Syracuse,
Jordan-Elbridge, Syracuse and Vernon. In fact,
Baker High School seniors will reap the benefits of
the program during this Friday's Moving Up Day
ceremony held at the high school.
Each chapter accepts donations and sponsors
for new scholarships, year-round. The Baldwinsville chapter works hand-in-hand with the Baldwinsville Community Scholarship Foundation
organizing several annual events to raise money
for scholarship funds and to attract new sponsors.
Dollars for Scholars is also the parent group
of two other major initiatives. The first is ScholarShop, an activity-based college-readiness Curriculum that helps parents and their children who
are students in fourth through 12th grade identify
career paths, prepare for higher education, and
navigate the admissions and financial aid process.
More than 700,000 students have graduated
from the ScholarShop program ready to face education and life after high school.
The second initiative — Collegiate Partners program — involves approximately 500 colleges, universities and technical schools to help maximize
the impact of financial aid from the organization.
Many of these educational institutions have
matching-fund agreements, and all are committed
to helping students get the most out of their Dollars for Scholars scholarship.

Baldwinsville celebrates Memorial Day this Sunday May 30. This
column is dedicated to our local
veterans, more than 100 of whom
served in World War II alone.
On Aug. 14, 1945, V-J Day
marked the Japanese surrender
and the end of war in Asia. One
group that greatly contributed was
"Merrill's Marauders." This "experiment" in Special Forces later
led to elite fighting units like the
Green Berets. One local Marauder
was Charles Lowe of Red Rock.
Charlie was born near Binghamton on March 14, 1921, to Leon
and Helen Lowe, both of whom
labored in local factories. C-harlie
later worked on a farm, where his
experiences herding livestock and
hunting game prepared him for
related roles in the war. Following
his enlistment in the Army in May,
1940, Charlie helped to secure the
Panama Canal Zone. After serving
for three years in the jungles of
Panama, Charlie became acclimated to extremes of heat and humidity. But nothing could fully prepare
him for the part he would play in
Burma, known now as Myarunar.
A 14 part report of WWII operations called the "American Forces
in Action Series" was published in
1945. One installment explained
that Merrill's Marauders was
"trained for long-range penetration behind enemy lines in Japanese-held Burma... occupation of
Burma menaced India, provided
a bulwark against counterattack
from the west, cut the last land
route for supply of China, and
added Burma's raw materials to
the resources of an empire already
rich.. ..From February to May,
194.4.. .the Marauders were.. .in a
drive to recover northern Burma
and clear the way for the construction of the Ledo Road, which
was to link the Indian railhead at
Ledo with the old Burma Road
to China." You may recall that

and over mountains from the
Hukawng Valley in northwestern Burma to Myitkyina on the
Irrawaddy River... They met and
defeated the veteran soldiers of the
Japanese.. Operating in the rear
of the main forces of the Japanese,
they prepared the way for the
southward advance of the Chinese
by disorganizing supply lines and
communications. The climax of
the Marauders' operations was the
capture of the Myitkyina airfield,

his wife, Maria, circa 1950, and built the current home on Gordon Road after a previous one burned down
circa 1965. Paul and Amy Lowe lost another son, Chris, in March, after a long and brave battle with cystic
fibrosis. He was 29, and like his brother Todd after him, had been a member of Troop 114, BSA.

behind the Japanese lines. During

artillery shell scored a direct hit
on the mule carrying the limited

rains made preservation of papers
impossible for more than a day or
two. The unit's intelligence officer
was killed at Myitkyina, and his
records were washed away before
they could be located." This was
just one of many casualties.
In fact, 80 percent of the 2997
men suffered casualties, including

contracted disabling diseases like
dysentery and malaria. But the
report notes that, "2% is the number of malaria cases evacuated.
Nearly every member of the force
had it in more or less severe form."
Charlie certainly wasn't immune
to illness or injury. According to a
school essay written by Charlie's
grandson, Todd Lowe, "by the
end of the mission.. .all were
considered walking wounded....
My grandfather got malaria (and)
typhus, and was shot in the hand
while firing his weapon. Because
of this he lost his hearing in his
right ear. He earned a Purple
Heart for his injuries." Todd's
mother Amy elaborated.
"After I had the kids, Charlie
would take me to the B'ville Diner
for coffee and apple pie. After
awhile, he began talking to me
about the war. But, he wouldn't tell
me about the battles, because he
didn't want to talk about taking
any lives. They started in India,
just hacking their way through the
jungle. They fought a form of guerilla warfare all the way to Myitkyina. Although he was wounded,
Charlie wasn't even hospitalized
until the end of the campaign."
Charlie married Maria Dzama
in 1947 before moving to Gordon
Road on the Seneca River. According to Todd's father, Paul, "He
built this house in 1965, after the
first one burned." But Paul knows
very little of his father's war
years. "Dad said that he became a
muleskinner (driver) and sharpshooter, because he was a farm
boy who could shoot and herd

Anxiously awaiting a Wisneski addition
From the mailbag
For the first time in five years, I
will not be covering the events and
news happening in Baldwinsville
this summer. I won't be gone permanently, though. I'm just taking a
couple of months to get acquainted
with our family's newest addition,
Cora Josephine, who is due to arrive June 26.
My husband, Brian, and I found
out I was pregnant Oct. 18 and
have steadily, and excitedly, been
preparing for her ever since, as has
my 15-year-old daughter, Cassie,
who recently completed a beautiful
mural on Cora 's bedroom wall.
After a second trimester miscarriage last year, I changed physicians
and began going to Dr. Cathy Berry
and Associates in Radisson for
my prenatal care. One, they came
highly recommended, and two,
they are closer to home and work,
which has proved super convenient
as I have frequent appointments to
keep a close eye on Cora's progress.
With the miscarriage, the baby's
heart just stopped beating; and
I didn't find out until two weeks

the Baldwinsville Central
School District on May
18 along with all those
who support education. The Baldwinsville
Central School District is
an essential component
of what makes our community such an attractive
place to live and raise
our children. Although
the school district will
face many challenges in
the upcoming years, I
believe these challenges
can be overcome so long
as all members of the
district work together
for the betterment of
our children's' education. Thank you again for

truly rewarding six-year
tenure on the Board of
Education.

standing. Of course,
it's abandoned and all
boarded up. There are
steel fences all around
the place. Kids are trying
to get inside to wreak
havoc, starting up small
fires and so forth. I really think that someone
should come forward
and do something about
this situation - decide
whether to keep this
abandoned mall standing
or to demolish it.
Does the mayor of
Baldwinsville know
about this situation?

mall should be gone and
or something to go in

was incredibly patient, allowing
me to come in to check the baby's
heartbeat whenever I felt it necessary, and once I started feeling
Cora's movement, she squashed
any concerns because she is always
going.
While I am out on maternity
leave getting to know my busy little
girl, I want to assure you that your
Messenger news is in good hands.
I have several people who will be
taking over various duties. Kim
Dryden, a Baldwinsville native and
Baker graduate who wrote about
her experiences in Seoul, Korea
in a Messenger column, will be
covering municipal meetings. Barb
Ackerman-Rachetta of Liverpool
will be covering various events
this summer, bringing you feature
stories and focusing on travelers
to Baldwinsville. Steve McMahon
will continue to contribute his
bi-monthly history column. And
Julia Merulla of Liverpool, who will
handle the day-to-day operations,
will be getting acquainted with
Baldwinsville's business district.
Summer office hours have yet to
be determined, but someone will
be available for readers to visit at
8 Mechanic St., home of the Public
Access Channel - Baldwinsville
station.

On May 12, Marion Lazan, author of "Four Perfect
Pebbles," presented sixthgraders at Ray Middle School
with a first-hand account of
the Holocaust.
Lazan arrived in the United States in 1948 at the age of
13 after surviving Nazi concentration camps as a child.
During her presentation, sherecounted the ordeal of life in
the camps, telling students
that her story is "the story
Anne Frank might have told
had she survived."
This is the sixth year Lazan has given her presentation to the students of Ray
Middle School.
Lazan told students she
believes hope is what enabled her and her family to
endure and survive their
ordeal in the camps. She
urged students to exercise
tolerance and respect for
others and to share the facts
of the Holocaust with future
generations.
"Prevent our past from
becoming your future," she
said.

courses have been rerouted
this year due to construction on Erie Boulevard.
The 5K winds through
Inner Harbor and the 3K
follows the Creek Walk.
"They are nice courses
with a nature-like feel to
both of them," Arnold said.
The 5K Centipede Division, which consists of
five-person teams of both
male and female contestants, tied together for the
duration of the race, returns for its second year.
"Five people tied together running is a challenge," Arnold, said noting the event drew a few
teams last year. "(The
Centipede) was fun. We
only had three teams, but
those who participated
enjoyed it. I'm sure we'll
have more this year."
Last, but not least, the
Caterpillar Crawl, popular among the 5 years
old and younger crowd,
sports a 40-foot course
free to all participants.
Event coordinators
have also encouraged
students from school districts throughout central
New York to form youth
teams for the annual race
with student teams hailing from Baldwinsville,
East Syracuse-Minoa,
Jamesville-Dewitt, Fayetteville-Manlius, Sandy
Creek and Liverpool.
Participants who register by May 28 will receive
pre-registration pricing

they are able.
This group will need
to bring most of their
own provisions including
medical supplies to treat
themselves if needed. Donations of over-the-counter medications would be
much appreciated. The
types of products needed
are Tylenol for adults,
multi-vitamins for adults
and children and anti-allergy medications. At this
time, liquid medications
will not be useful due to
their weight and likelihood of spilling. They
are also collecting items
to provide the children
such as coloring books,
crayons, etc.

After his discharge on
June 5, 1945, Charlie was
awarded a number of
ribbons and medals for
his service, all of which
were lost in the fire 35
years ago. By contacting
Marauder veteran and
historian Robert Passanisi, I learned that Charlie
should receive one more,
albeit posthumously. According to Passanisi, "He's
also entitled to the Bronze
Star Medal he earned as a
conversion of the Combat
Infantry Badge. He probably didn't know. The
award was issued after
the war was over and no
one was told. It was like
thanking you for going
through hell, and successfully doing the impossible." Charlie Lowe died
June 1, 1996.1 think that
he's due.

The mule was Integral to Merrill's Marauders. The tough terrain and thick
vegetation of the Burmese jungle made transportation by motorized vehicle
impossible. One day on the bail, Charlie was demonstrating how to motivate a
mule to move, based on his experience herding livestock on a farm. Just then,
an officer passed by, and ram impressed that he promoted Charlie (already
a sharpshooter and scout) from cook to muleskinner. This was a big step up,
beam the mules were not Just beasts of burden. When foodstuffs got low and
• there tveron't sufficient supplies to camy, they became a source of much-needed
protein forte men. The mules worked just as hard as the men, so that by the
end, lbw Weren't much more than skin and bones.

The Baldwinsville Girls
Varsity Golf Team is close
to wrapping up its 2010
season with an undefeated record. The Bees are
currently 12 — 0 with two
matches left.
Junior Lauren Petty
and Senior Jamie Schmidt
have led the team all
season and are ranked
among the top golfers
of Section III. Adding to
Baldwinsville's winning
roster are: seventh grader Katie Walsh, eighth
grader Marissa Foriero,
sophomore Erin Ganley,
junior Heather Heins and
seniors Emma Plucinik,
Caitlyn Sparkes and Melissa Curtis.
According to Coach
Karen Schmidt, the team's
undefeated season has
been somewhat of a sur-
prise.
"We lost two of our four
starters from last year, but
with our newest members,
working together with our
returning golfers, we've
overcome that potential
setback and earned a successful season. We've had
a lot of fun."
The Baldwinsville Girls
Golf team will compete at
Sectionals Thursday May
27 at Rogue's Roost.
Lax Bees take league title

It wasn't just that the
Batdwinsville boys lacrosse team claimed the
CNY Counties League National division regular-season championship - it was
how they earned that title
which made it special.
The Bees, to finish on
top, had to win two tough
road games - and did just
that, capping it off with a
13-10 victory over CiceroNorth Syracuse Thursday
night at Bragman Stadium,
with first place on the
line.
At just the right time,
B'ville (13-3) has played
some of its best lacrosse of
the season. Even an early
deficit at CNS wouldn't
faze them, either.
Trailing 3-1 going into
the second quarter, the
Bees' offense started to
warm up, bashing the
Northstars on a regular
basis until it had picked
up a 6-6 tie going into the
half.
Gradually, B'ville took
over in the third quarter,
aided by a defense that
remained steady and be-
gan to figure out CNS's
tendencies. They forced
bad shots - and Parker Ferrigan, who finished with 14
saves, displayed how much
he has improved during
this spring.
The Bees won despite
little production outside its
front line. Billy Ward had
five goals and two assists,
while Kyle Styer picked
up four goals and one assist and Dom Darcangelo
scored three times. Wes
Lawrence added one goal
and one assist as Evan
States added an assist, too.
B'ville arrived at CNS
with a good feeling about
itself, especially in the
wake of going to Holland
Stadium last Tuesday night
and delivering a 12-10 victory over Auburn.
What made that win
more impressive was the
startling fact that, in a
single game, B'ville logged
more goals than West Genesee (six) and FayettevilleManlius (five) combined
in their earlier trips to
Auburn.
This breakthrough
didn't happen right away
—but in a 5-5 first half, the
Bees found that it could
snake its way through the
Maroons' physical group
of defenders.
The two sides stayed
even until the fourth quarter, when the Bees' decided
edge in ground balls (4027) finally paid off as it
outscored the Maroons 5-3
in the homestretch. Also,
Ferrigan impressed with
11 saves.
Styer had five goals,
adding an assist. States,
Ward and Casey Colligan
each put up three assists,.
with States scoring twice
to match Darcangelo. Lawrence and Niko Manning
joined Colligan in the onegoal column as Andrew
Chadderdon led Auburn
with five goals and two
assists.
All this moved B'ville
up to the no. 3 seed for the
Section III Class A playoffs,
where it will host no. 6 seed
Liverpool (a team it lost to,
14-12, on May 4) in Thursday's quarterfinal round.
The winner gets West Genesee or Central Square in
the semifinals nextTuesday
at Cicero-North Syracuse's
Bragman Stadium, with
the finals June 4 on that
same CNS turf.
With a pair of home
victories, the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team
gave itself a lot of momentum entering the' Section
III Class A playoffs.
Up against a possible
post-season opponent
in Auburn last Tuesday
night, the Bees unleashed
lots of offense and beat the
Maroons 21-10.
Utilizing all of its depth
on hand, B'ville had double-digit goals in both
halves, leading 10-4 at
the break and continuing
to expand that margin
despite Auburn's Nicole
Schattinger hitting them
with five goals.
Ashley Gentile and
Sarah Clark led the hosts
with four goals apiece.
Sam Yaro and Erin Ward
had equal three-goal hat
tricks, while Claire Monnat gained two goals and
one assist.
Maggie Monnat again
.used her deft passing to
produce five assists as she,
along with Becky Guzzo,
Mackenzie Kjerstad, Taylor Pastore and Alexis
Czyz, earned single goals.
Bridget Florack contributed an assist.
B'ville then pounded
Cicero-North Syracuse
21-9Thursday night, making it a memorable Senior
Night at Pelcher-Arcaro
Stadium.
No less than 10 different players would score
in a game where the Bees
(12-4) had to keep a hot
pace in the first half, fighting its way ahead 13-7
before its defense shored
up and the team's depth
proved far too much for
the Northstars to bear.
Yaro and Clark, with
four goals apiece, led the
way as Ward earned her
own three-goal hat trick.
Gentile and Meg Cuddy
each scored twice, while
Kjerstad, Florack, Czyz,
Lauren Roberts, Clarie
Monnat and Meg Haney
earned single goals. Maggie Monnat picked up two
assists.
B'ville has the no. 3
seed for the Class A tournament. With just five
teams in the field, the Bees
go directly into the semifinals Friday and face no. 2
seed Fayetteville-Manlius,
looking to avenge an April
20 loss to the Hornets so
it can advance to next
Tuesday's final at SUNYCortland.

up with the main contenders at last Monday's
CNY Counties League
National division championship meet at CiceroNorth Syracuse's Bragman

Overall, the Bees had
111 points, not that far
from Liverpool's winning
effort of 144 points. Utica
Proctor (142 points) was
close behind the Warriors
as host CNS (136 points)
finished third.
Jon Hingre proved the
top all-around athlete
here, winning the fiveevent pentathlon as his total of 2,437 points held off
CNS's Mohammed Nassar
(2,346) for first place.
Shaun Thompson
would go to the 3,000meter steeplechase and
run away from the small
field, winning in a time
of 9:39.11, with Josh Perez
(10:45.44) claiming third
place.
Just the same, in the
3,200-meter run, Adam
Pacheck went to the top,
his time of 9:44.48 enough
to hold off CNS's Chris
Buchanan (9:4746) and
the rest of the field as
Thompson got third place
in 9:50.05. Pacheck also
was fourth in the mile
(4:34.22), just ahead of
teammates Nate McCabe
and Ethan Pacheck.
Brian Kane won the
high jump when he cleared
6 feet 1 inch with fewer
misses than Proctor's Pedrick O'Garro. Kane also
was fifth in the long jump
(19 feet 2 1/4 inches) and
sixth (40 feet 1 inch) in the
triple jump.
Raeshaun Jones, atoning for a poor finish in the
shot put, got second place
in the discus, heaving it
126 feet 2 inches, a number
only CNS's Jared Thomson (135 feet 8 inches)
could top.

Charles Parker earned second place in the 4x800 reTay, its time of 8:25.52 just

Hoover earned second place irt the 110 high
hurdles in 15.34 seconds,
just Liverpool's Joe Spernyak (15.25), and also ran

commercial lending-portfolios, all

addition, for the last four years, he and Mrs.

Sheriff's Deputies arrested Clifton Reynolds, 35, of 8406 Gaskin
Road, Friday May 21 upon his
release from Upstate University
Hospital on felony charges and
lodged him at the Onondaga
County Justice Center. He was arraigned in Clay Town Court and
Judge Christopher Gaiser remanded Reynolds to the Justice Center
in lieu of $35,000 cash /$60,000
bond for the Clay charges and
$15,000 cash/$30,000 bond on the
Lysander charges.
At approximately 8:57 p.m.
Thursday May 20, Sheriff's Deputies responded to the 8400 block
of River Road, to investigate a
head-on crash. Witnesses told
deputies that a 2007 Chevrolet
Trailblazer operated by Reynolds
was traveling south at a high rate
of speed when he crossed the center line, entered the north bound
lane, and crashed head-on with a
2008 Chevrolet Impala, operated
by Richard Zimmerman, 23, of
Baldwinsville.
Rescue crews from the Belgium
Cold Springs and Moyers Corners
Fire Departments responded to the
scene and extricated both drivers
from the wreckage. Zimmerman
sustained multiple injuries and
was airlifted by the Sheriff's Air-I
helicopter to University Hospital,
where he is currently listed in
serious condition. Reynolds, who
crashed an SUV into the Pier 57
restaurant on Wednesday, was
transported by ambulance to University Hospital, where he is being
treated for non-life threatening

Regarding Wednesday's incident, witnesses told deputies that
a 2005 Toyota Corolla, operated by
Jig ishaben Patel, 32, of Maple View,
was traveling north on Oswego
Road when she was rear ended by
a the 1996 Nissan Pathfinder operated by Reynolds. The impact from
that crash forced Patel's vehicle to
travel approximately 50 yards before coming to a stop in the northbound lane, while Reynolds' SUV
traveled through the restaurant
parking lot. Reynolds' SUV struck
a parked car and began rolling
several times before slamming into
the restaurant's front entrance.
Rescue cry ...s from the Moyers
Corners Fire Department responded to the scene and were forced to
extricate Reynolds from the vehicle. Reynolds was transported to
University Hospital for treatment
of non-life threatening injuries.
No one inside the restaurant was
injured and both Patel and her
5-year-old son, Kush, escaped
without injury.
Sheriff's deputies charged
Reynolds with common law driving while intoxicated, driving
while intoxicated-drugs, unlawful
possession of marijuana, aggravated unlicensed operation of a
motor vehicle in the 2nd degree,
imprudent speed and driving left
of the center line for Wednesday's
incident.
Reynolds was also charged with
aggravated unlicensed operation
of a motor vehicle in the second
degree, imprudent speed and failure to keep right for Thursday's
incident.
