SECA President’s Report
As I write this we are enjoying a chinook; can spring
be too far off? On February 23rd the City held an
Open House at the Trico Centre to update the
public on the Shawnee Park Land Use Amendment
application, and the Phase 5 and 6 Development
Permit applications for new housing proposed to
be built in this same area. I hope you were able to
attend. Watch our SECA web site (http://www.
shawnee-evergreen.ca/) for updates or go to
the City site at https://developmentmap.calgary.

March is Community Association
Membership Awareness Month!
D
id you know that Mayor Nenshi declares the month of March as
Community Association Membership Awareness Month?
Did you also know that there are 150 community associations in
Calgary that are run by your neighbours? In fact, more than 20,000
volunteers are involved in community associations here in Calgary,
making it the LARGEST collective volunteer movement in the city!
Are you a member of your community association? If not, you are
missing out on numerous benefits, including sizeable discounts at local
businesses. Membership is extremely affordable with most community
association memberships averaging under $30 a year!
Throughout the month of March we encourage you to “be part of it”
and find out what your community association can do for you! It’s easy
and you may be surprised by the many benefits and options available
to you as a resident.
Upcoming events for SECA include the Easter Egg
Hunt on Saturday March 26th. As was the case
last year this will be held at Evergreen Park at 1611
Evergreen Drive. Participation is open to the
families of all SECA members. The Community
sponsored Parade of Garage Sales will be the
weekend of June 4th and our Annual Stampede
Breakfast will be Saturday June 25th. Mark your
calendars now!
Sincerely,
Brad Smith,
President SECA
Community associations are run by your neighbours, they bring
residents together, they provide endless opportunities right in
your backyard, and they act as a voice for your community. Most
importantly, these hard-working volunteers are dedicated to
making sure your community is a great place to live, work, and play.
Purchasing a community association membership is a great way to get
involved and show your support for the many ways your neighbours
work to ensure you love where you live.
For example, this very community newsletter is just one of the many
ways your community association works to keep you informed on
events, topics and issues of interest close to home, written and
compiled by your neighbours.
So take a minute during March Community Association Membership
Awareness Month and find out more about your community
association and how you can get involved!

protect your PIN from fraudsters
March is Fraud Prevention Month, so consider taking all
precautions necessary to arm yourself against identity thieves
eager to gain access to your financial information and bank
accounts.
One of the easiest steps you can take is to guard your personal
identification number (PIN) from thieves who would use it to
make unauthorized transactions on your accounts.
Canadians use their PINs daily to make credit and debit
purchases, and simply covering the keypad with your hand is a
good first step to keep your PIN secret. You can also make your
PIN difficult to steal by creating one that’s hard to guess, and by
changing it often.
Did you also know the Canadian Code of Practice for
Consumer Debit Card Services provides guidelines about
personal identification numbers? The code states a PIN can’t
be a combination of the cardholder’s name, telephone number,
date of birth, address, or social insurance number.
Some other steps to consider to protect your PIN.
• Do not write your PIN on the back of your debit or credit
card.
• Check your accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions,
and notify your financial institution as soon as you discover one.

Neighbour Day
Calling for Calgary Awards Nominations
Held annually on the third Saturday of
June, Neighbour Day is an opportunity
for neighbours to come together in the
form of BBQs, cleanups and potlucks
to celebrate our strong community
spirit in Calgary. Make Saturday, June
18 the day you host a block party,
a picnic at your local park or even
introduce yourself to a neighbour and
lend a helping hand.
The Calgary Awards is one of the largest citizen recognition programs in our city. The
City of Calgary established the Calgary Awards in 1994 to celebrate and recognize
outstanding achievements and contributions made by Calgarians. Each year, individuals,
corporations, community groups, schools and organizations are nominated in five
major award categories, for a total of 16 awards.
The City of Calgary wants to
encourage as many people as possible
to host a local activity on their block
or in their residential building. That
is why they are waiving the fees for
small scale local block party permits
and neighbourhood park bookings for
events that take place on June 18 this
year. Please note the deadline for road
closure permit applications is May 27.
The Calgary Awards are for Calgarians. Individuals, businesses,
not-for-profit organizations, community groups and other
organizations can all be nominated. For specific eligibility
requirements, how to nominate someone in your community and
for more information visit: calgary.ca/calgaryawards.

Friends, this is a pivotal time in Alberta
history--especially considering job
losses here at home--& the economic
situation around the world. This is a
great opportunity for you to have your
say: what do you hope the new NDP
government will have--& will not have--in
their upcoming budget? What other
advice do you have for them--or for me?
Let’s make our suggestions before the
budget, rather than waiting until it’s too
late; & please bring a friend!
High School Students: Would you
like to be an “MLA for a Day”?
This unique 3-day program (May
1 - 3) provides students with a
deeper understanding of the roles &
responsibilities of an MLA. Students
participate in workshops & discussions,
conduct personal interviews with
current & former MLAs, & take part
in a debate in the Legislative Assembly
Chamber. It results in new friendships
& perspectives; & transportation, meals,
& accommodation are provided free for
successful applicants. For more details,
please contact me asap!

-Spruce Meadows (on the Southern
boundary of Calgary-Lougheed). Our
PC caucus joined me in paying respects
to Mr Southern, & we offer our sincere
condolences to the Southern family, who
will carry on his amazing work in our city,
province, country & world!
Making a Respectful Mark as
Opposition Advocate
I was pleased to offer congratulations
to the two new ministers appointed
to the portfolios for which I am the
PC advocate: Advanced Education, &
Indigenous Relations. It was gratifying
to see the gov’t finally change the name
of the ministry to Indigenous Relations
(a more inclusive title), from the former
Aboriginal Relations. <I recommended
that to the former minister, while
questioning her during budget estimates
last fall. She indicated she would
consider the suggestion, & I am glad that
she did!> Respectful discourse is my
preferred method of acting in a way that
effects positive change.
Royalties in Alberta
Alberta’s Students are our Future
It was a pleasure to attend GCA’s Career
Day in Bridlewood. I was asked to share
my personal, professional, & political
journeys, while focussing on the students’
future. As a former educator, adventurer,
entrepreneur, & humanitarian, it was
special to be part of an event such as this,
& to witness the passion & commitment
of the staff & students. I send everyone
my best wishes--especially those
preparing to finish their high school
career, & move on to their next phase of
their lives!
Pg. 10 March 2016 An Unforgettable Albertan
I was humbled to attend the funeral of
Ron Southern recently. Over the years,
I have learned a great deal from this
Albertan icon who was an incredible
family man, a great friend & mentor, a
generous philanthropist, the founder
of the worldwide family of ATCO
companies, & the co-visionary of the
best facility of its kind in the world-
After the election, the new NDP gov’t
announced a review of AB’s system
for collecting royalties from energy
companies. While in opposition, the
NDP harshly criticized our former PC
gov’t for failing to maintain a system that
benefited AB’s first & foremost; but the
NDP recently released the report, which
concluded that the royalty system was
good (!); & AB’s have been indeed been
receiving their fair share. While pleased
with that expected result, our PC caucus
did not support the review in the first
place: it created unnecessary instability
in a crucial sector of our economy (which
was already shaken by the drop in the
price of oil); & that directly affect the lives
of AB’s in crucial ways! My PC colleagues
& I will continue to stand up loud &
proud for what is best for Albertans; & I
encourage your feedback in the process!

With all the focus on RouteAhead and the future infrastructure of our City, we
sometimes forget about those who choose to commute using the smallest carbon
footprint possible. Back in 2009, Calgary adopted a Municipal Development Plan
(MDP) that empahsized Calgarians’ desire to build a city more economically,
socially and environmentally sustatinable. I will be doing a bus tour to all
Ward 13 communities with the Community Association Presidents and City
transporation staff to focus on traffic and pedestrian areas of concern. Please
let them know your concerns and hotspots as well.
As a Pedestrian Strategy Steering Committee member, our plan is simple; to
keep pedestrians safe and people driving defensively.
• Short-term (2016 - 2018): focus is on safety. Quick to deliver, effective,
inexpensive actions.
• Medium-term (2019 - 2022): focus is on connections.
• Long-term (2022+): focus is on walkability.
As with RouteAhead, there will be a ton of community engagement, consultation and dialogue. As with the Safer Mobility Plan, the
Pedestrian Strategy is aligned with “Vision Zero”, ultimately striving for zero pedestrian casualties in Calgary. To get there, we have
set an aggressive target of a 50% reduction in injuries and fatalities by 2025.
In addition to traditional pedestrian designs, a number of new technologies are being proposed:
• Action #4: Pilot installations for street lighting to illuminate roadway crossings
• Action #5: Pilot installations of ‘pedestrian-zones’ where pedestrian desire lines
cannot be easily confined to a specific crosswalk location
• Action #41: Collaborate with partner organizations to develop three innovative
pedestrian projects
The capital requirement in the short term (2016 - 2018) is $15million. $4million of the
2016 capital funding is available and will be applied to priority actions. The 2017 and
2018 capital requirements will be revisited as part of the mid-cycle budget adjustments.
The Pedestrian Strategy is vital for the liveability of our citizens in our City as the need
for more sustainable resources. We want to do everything we can for family safety and for this to become the standard.

Home security checklist
H
omeowners should familiarize themselves with the
most common risks for break-ins, thefts, fires and other
mishaps that can occur in homes today.
“Home security doesn’t necessarily mean hard-wiring alarms
and installing cameras. While those are certainly options, there
are often simple steps you can take to decrease the opportunity
for crime. This checklist to protect your investment and to
develop a comprehensive home security plan:
Make your home an undesirable target for would-be
criminals. The best way to prevent crime is to reduce the
opportunities around your home and property. Keep windows,
doors and vehicles locked. Ask a neighbour or house sitter to
check your home every day while you’re out of town. Avoid
broadcasting your latest purchases – break down packaging
from new purchases before taking them to the curb. Ensure
entrance ways, windows and doors are clearly visible and not
obscured by trees or shrubs.
Be aware of crime in your area. Subscribe to a local
police department blog or social media feed. Read your
Pg. 14 March 2016 local newspaper. Talk to your neighbours.
Prepare against fire and adopt fire-safe habits.
Install new batteries in smoke detectors every fall and
keep loaded fire extinguishers scattered around your home.
Periodically spot check around the home to assess the firesafe habits of occupants. Look for electrical problems such as
overloaded circuits or exposed wiring. Fire prevention involves
both fire-safe surroundings and fire-safe habits by everyone.
Conduct a risk assessment. List things about you, your
home and your location that make you susceptible to
crime, fires and other accidents. Include your own observations,
gather information from police, neighbours and insurers. Rank
your list to show where your greatest security weaknesses lie.
Match those risks to an appropriate security system in terms of
technologies, complexity and cost.
Promoting consistent and mindful security habits and developing
awareness of your greatest risks will help you to protect your
investment for years to come.
