Happy 55th Anniversary to Slovenska Pristava! Fifty-five years ago our founders made a decision that would change our lives forever. They took a chance and purchased the piece of property that is today Slovenska Pristava. We are lucky to have inherited this special place and all it holds for Slovenians across Northeast Ohio and North America. Our little piece of Slovenia here in the United States continues to offer a place in which we are able to celebrate the joys of our Slovenian culture and heritage with family and friends. With a continued focus on family, the Pristava Board and membership undertook the monumental task of rebuilding one of the jewels of Pristava, our swimming pool. Due to the priceless gift of volunteerism from our members planning, material and financial donations, and sweat equity, the Pristava community built a swimming facility of which we are all proud. In order to complete the pool in a timely fashion the Board made the difficult decision to take out private and business loans. I am proud to report that because of the generous support of our members were we able to pay the loans back the final outstanding loans connected with the construction of our swimming pool. Pristava is now DEBT-FREE! This was only possible because of your donations, volunteer hours, and constant support of our work. Thank you! Slovenska Pristava has had a good beginning to the 2016 season with a Pristavska Noč that will be remembered as one of the finest in years. Thank you to all who were able to help us celebrate 50 years of Camp Pristava at the St. Clair Slovenian National Home. Heartfelt thanks go to the planning committee for creating a night to remember and for setting a high standard for the rest of the year’s events. As you begin to make plans for the upcoming months, I hope that you will be able to make Pristava a destination for your family and friends. Please make sure to take time to read through this edition of The Listič in which you will find more information about our upcoming season’s events. Make sure to bookmark our website www.slovenskapristava.org and “LIKE” our Slovenska Pristava Facebook page for updated information throughout the year. Additionally, please support the Slovenian radio stations and the Slovenian American Times throughout the 2016 season. I look forward to seeing you at one of the many events this season, continuing with the Reverse Raffle held April 9, 2016! Let’s toast together to celebrate the beauty and joy of being part of Slovenska Pristava! Na zdravje! On behalf of the Board Members of Slovenska Pristava, I am respectfully yours, Mary Ann Vogel, President/predsednica Pristavski Listič 2016 Page 2 MEMBER TESTIMONIAL By Frances Miklich Coberly My great grandfather, Johannes Miklič, emigrated from Cesta, Dobropolje in Dolenjska in 1892 and settled in Sparta, Minnesota. Over the course of 15 years, he brought his wife and four children to Sparta. In 1898, his son, my grandfather, Franc B. Miklič, emigrated from Cesta, Dobropolje to Sparta. My grandmother, Frančiška Boštjančič, came to America in 1907 from Videm, Dobropolje. They married in 1907 in Bemidji, Minnesota and raised their six children in Aurora, Minnesota until moving to Cleveland in 1923. My grandmother died in 1928 at the age of 43 and my grandfather died in 1932 at the age of 49. My first visit to Slovenska Pristava in 2007 was quite emotional! My husband, Phil Coberly, and I arrived early on Sunday morning to attend Mass before St. Mary's picnic. It was raining and the picnic tables were wet. As soon as the rain stopped, Pristava volunteers began wiping off the tables and speaking to one another in Slovenian. I started to cry and my husband asked, "What is the matter? Why are you crying?" I told him that I felt at home and wished my grandparents and mother could share this day with me! I couldn't help but feel I was back in 1928 at a picnic with my Slovenian family in Aurora, Minnesota. After that day, I visited Pristava regularly and enjoyed the friendship of the members. Phil and I already knew a few of them from the Willoughby American Legion and St. Mary's Church. We sat with Poldi Bojc, Ferdo Sečnik, Tony Champa, Tone Vogel, and Frances. I got to know the principles and purpose of Pristava as well as many other members. I liked the idea that our Catholic faith was at the center of our existence. I truly found a home and became a member in 2009. In 2014, I was elected to the Board of Slovenska Pristava. I am affiliated with several other Slovenian organizations. I belong to the Pensioners Club of Slovenska Pristava, Slovenian Genealogy Society International, and volunteer as a Research Specialist at the Slovenian Genealogy Research Center located within the Slovenian National Home complex on St. Clair Avenue. Our purpose is to connect families with their Slovenian relatives here in America and in Slovenia. I am also a member of the Slovenian American Heritage Association. Once a month I attend Cooking Class with Micka at St Mary's and submit photos from the class for publication in the Slovenian American Times. This is my message to the entire Slovenian Community. "My hope is that this year and in the years to come, all Slovenian organizations here in the greater Cleveland community can extend their hands to one another and work together! We are a loving, hardworking, and fun-loving people. There is nothing we cannot do when we all support each other. We are Americans first—then the Face of Our Slovenian Heritage and Culture.” Zevnik-Cosic Funeral Home 28890 Chardon Road - Willoughby Hills, OH 44092 Phone (440) 944-8400 Joe Zevnik - Licensed Funeral Director Pristavski Listič 2016 Page 3 Greetings members! When reminiscing about camp, each individual person will have his or her own stories and view, but all of the stories have the same theme – an unforgettable experience. The words “Camp Pristava” bring memories of friendship, laughter, and emotions to a camper or counselor. The majority of campers and counselors come from the Greater Cleveland area; however, there are a few attendees that come from other states and occasionally from other countries to attend the week-long summer camp. The continuous commitment of returning to camp speaks louder than words of the impact it has had on their lives. The fact that counselors and parents adjust their work schedules to volunteer their time to be part of the week-long camp demonstrates the devotion and commitment to making the camp experience a success for everyone. This type of dedication and selfless contribution of time and talents shows that Camp Pristava is unlike any other. My first memory of camp is from before I was even old enough to attend. On a Monday morning, my mother pulled up to Pristava, already an unusual event since we would typically attend Pristava on the weekends. My older sister and all the “big kids” were being dropped off for camp. Terrified to attend, my sister did not want to go, and she hated my mother for “shipping her off.” We visited her in the middle of the week and her experience was not at all what I was anticipating – she was having a blast and would not stop talking about it. To my five-year-old mind, this camp went from being a prison to a magical kingdom where kids ruled for the week. Four years later, I remember my “drop-off” was a little different from my sisters’, and I was more anxious regarding the things about which every 9-year-old girl worries: “Am I going to make any friends, and what makes this so different from any other camp?” By the end of day one, I had already made several friends within my group. My counselors had already created a nickname for me: Giggles. For those of you who may not know me, I love to giggle. Although people do not refer to me as Giggles anymore, Camp Pristava is where I found myself giggling the most for years to come - I giggled my way from camper to head counselor. Each year when Saturday night at camp rolls around, everyone begins to think, “It’s over already?” They begin discussions and countdowns for the following years to come. The Camp Pristava “rush” continues for a couple of days after departure. It is called “post-camp syndrome”: looking around for the usual fivecourse meal, attempting to play dodgeball with your parents or dog, singing a camp song before eating and realizing no one is joining your proclamation to food, looking down at your watch around one or two o’clock to head to the pool for a swim or afternoon nap, attempting to start a twelve-foot bonfire (because no other bonfire you have attended has been that high), but most importantly texting/calling your fellow camp friends to hang out every day after or at least once a month to stay connected. Our world has become so isolated that as a society, we are losing the value of spending time with one another and appreciating the culture to which we all belong. Camp Pristava is a constant reminder of the family with which the Slovenian community has blessed me, and I can’t wait for the day when my nieces, nephews, children, and grandchildren can attend. Pristavski Listič 2016 Page 5 MEMORIAL PAVERS From now thru Sunday, May 1, 2016, you can purchase a paver to support the Chapel/Orlov Vrh renovations. PRISTAVA FINANCIALS The Pristava annual membership dues are a critical source of our organization's financial viability. In the most recent years, our dues cover approximately 70% of our annual fixed expenses. These expenses include the annual insurance, real estate taxes, maintenance, and utility costs. We should target to cover 100% of our fixed costs with our annual membership dues and utilize the profits from our picnics and fundraising efforts to continue our capital improvement of our grounds and buildings. Timely payments allow us to plan capital projects in a more efficient manner. Subscribe TODAY! Subscription Information Contact: [email protected] or call 440-833-0020 Pozor Balincarji !!!
